Lies of P, the RPG inspired by Dark Souls featuring Pinocchio, will receive a major expansion titled Overture at the end of this year, accompanied by a free update. This update will include a Boss Rush mode and a Battle Memories mode that will allow players to adjust the difficulty of boss battles, as well as three new difficulty levels.

It Will Do What They Would Kill Dark Souls For Doing

Among the most controversial news is the inclusion of an easy mode and a hard mode, something that challenges the usual logic of soulslike titles. This decision has sparked intense debate in the gaming community about whether reducing difficulty affects the gaming experience. Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the Souls saga, believes that lowering the difficulty could strip the game of its essence, arguing that overcoming challenges is a fundamental part of the experience. However, the director of Lies of P, Jiwon Choi, emphasized that his goal is to reach a broader audience, adding that player feedback was key to these decisions.

The new difficulty setting will apply to both the base game and the Overture expansion campaign, which will take place in a frozen environment. After the release of the expansion, the Neowiz team will focus entirely on the sequel to Lies of P, which could influence the design of new difficulty mechanics.

This debate about the inclusion of more accessible difficulty modes often resurfaces in soulslike games, with polarized opinions on their effectiveness. While some players celebrate the arrival of an easy mode, others feel that this could dilute the tension that characterizes titles like Lies of P. It will be interesting to see how this conversation evolves, especially with the upcoming Elden Ring: Nightreign, which will surely bring the topic back to the forefront of the discussion about video games.

The director of Lies of P, Jiwon Choi, has shared details about the evolution of the game and its future, including plans for expansions, sequels, and spin-offs. With the upcoming DLC titled Overture just around the corner, Choi has confirmed that the focus will remain on the single-player experience, omitting cooperative elements at this time. The essence of the game continues to revolve around the individual player’s experience, an aspect that Choi considers central to its development.

No multiplayer… for the moment

The Overture DLC promises to offer between 15 and 20 hours of content for experienced players, including numerous bosses and new gameplay elements that could not be incorporated into the original release. Choi has emphasized that the goal is to create a high-quality, premium experience, focusing on completing what was started with Lies of P.

Despite the influence of Elden Ring Nightreign, which has introduced multiplayer elements into the soulslike genre, Choi does not feel the pressure to replicate this approach. After trying the new title from FromSoftware, he found it refreshing but reaffirmed his intention to forge a unique identity for Lies of P. According to him, the current development focuses on creating a distinctive style, away from imitation.

However, Choi has left the door open to the possibility of including multiplayer features in future projects, indicating that the team is open to new ideas in development. This suggests that, although the present and immediate future of Lies of P focus on single-player experiences, shared adventures are not ruled out on the horizon.

Since its release in 2023, Lies of P has surprised the gaming community, solidifying Round8 Studio’s position in the competitive soulslike genre, traditionally dominated by FromSoftware. This action RPG, which reimagines the classic tale of Pinocchio, has been acclaimed by critics and players alike, bringing with it a dark atmosphere and intense combat that have captured the imagination of many.

A DLC that promises many hours of fun.

Recently, it was announced that the highly anticipated DLC, titled Overture, is scheduled to be released this summer. During a presentation at the latest State of Play, a first look was given at some of the new bosses, weapons, and environments that will be available in this expansion. According to the game director, Jiwon Choi, Overture will offer between 15 and 20 hours of additional content for those who are already veterans of the title.

Overture will not only expand the narrative of Lies of P, but it will also serve as an interconnected prequel to the original story. Choi emphasized that this expansion aims to complete the experience of the base game, a challenge that the team faced with dedication. “Developing the expansion was a joint effort to choose the best content,” Choi mentioned, highlighting the importance of maintaining high quality across all the material offered.

An interesting aspect is that Overture will not be related to the final scene of the base game, which has led to speculation about the possibility of a sequel. According to Choi, many elements that were not included in Lies of P will be developed in this expansion, which could open new narrative avenues for future projects. Players will be able to access this DLC once they complete chapter 9, allowing a journey to the past in the unsettling city of Krat, before it falls into chaos.

The highly anticipated expansion for Lies of P, titled Overture, will be released this summer, almost two years after the game’s initial launch date. This DLC promises to take players back in time, exploring the events that preceded the devastating Puppet Massacre that ravaged the city of Krat. In a recent trailer presented at the PlayStation Showcase, developer Neowiz offered a glimpse of the story, which promises a deeper and more immersive narrative, along with new mechanics and content.

Jiwon Choi, the game director, has mentioned that Overture aims to be a “developer’s cut” of Lies of P, similar to what a ‘director’s cut’ would be in the cinematic realm. “I believe you will agree that the long journey to bring you this news has been worth it,” Choi shared, referring to the ambition to capture the essence of the story as it was originally conceived.

New possibilities for an already acclaimed game

The expansion will include new bosses and weapons, elements that will significantly enrich gameplay and combat. Fans of the game have expressed excitement at the possibility of trying new weapons in combat, as the combat system of Lies of P has been favorably compared to the creations of FromSoftware, receiving very positive reviews.

Additionally, it has been reported that the development team is working on a new survival horror title set in space, suggesting that the creators are expanding their portfolio into diverse genres. These announcements have generated speculation about the future direction of the studio and the impact of Lies of P on the overall landscape of video games.
