He left his job at Ubisoft on Assassin's Creed to make a very strange and beautiful strategy game

Darenn Keller, former designer at Ubisoft known for his work on the Assassin’s Creed and Ghost Recon series, decided to leave the company to pursue his own creative vision by developing his independent game, Dawnfolk. This decision emerged during a time of isolation that many experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Keller felt the need for greater control over his work.

A game of building different cities

Dawnfolk, a city-building game with survival elements and puzzles, has achieved a remarkable 94% positive reviews on Steam and has sold 26,000 copies, allowing Keller to sustain his career as an independent developer. “It’s a small success that has allowed me to continue as a developer,” he notes. Despite its moderate success, Keller acknowledges that working alone can be both motivating and challenging, especially regarding decision-making and business management.

To finance the launch of Dawnfolk, Keller turned to a publisher, who provided him with a financial cushion. However, there are questions about whether self-publishing might have been a better alternative. Looking ahead, the developer wants to create smaller and faster games, aiming to complete his next project, currently titled B-Type: Space Builder, in a year or a year and a half.

Keller intends for his games to maintain elements of strategy, but with a focus on experiences that are accessible and fun. “I’m not looking to achieve the complexity of games like Civilization. I want to make simple games with a bit of strategy,” he comments. As he progresses in his career, he hopes to continue sharing his experience with other developers, highlighting the importance of small victories in the gaming industry.

Behaviour Interactive, known for its success in the horror genre with Dead by Daylight, has acquired The Fun Pimps, developers of 7 Days to Die, with the aim of strengthening the development of this popular survival game.

Since its launch in beta phase, the title has sold over 20 million copies and maintains an impressive 93% positive reviews on Steam, in addition to attracting around 30,000 daily players.

They want to continue expanding their portfolio

Despite the acquisition, The Fun Pimps has assured that it will continue to lead the project without relinquishing control, preserving its original vision and commitment to the community.

The studio’s co-founder, Richard Huenink, has stated that this decision does not imply a drastic change, but rather aims to enhance its development capacity, thus allowing access to greater resources to accelerate the creation of new content and explore more ambitious ideas.

Behaviour Interactive has embarked on a strategy focused on acquiring studios that share its philosophy, emphasizing community support and modding, key elements in the success of 7 Days to Die. This move comes after the Canadian studio also acquired Red Hook Studios, creators of Darkest Dungeon, consolidating a trend towards expanding its game catalog.

The purchase, the amount of which has not been revealed, represents a logical evolution for The Fun Pimps, whose only game has received outstanding feedback since its launch. Although the title has evolved over its 11 years of development, the player base has remained solid, underscoring the permanence and interest in the experience that 7 Days to Die offers. It is rumored that this change could result in new and exciting updates in the near future.

If you like survival games, it's because deep down you're just a little monkey, according to the designer of this popular survival game

Anthony Gallegos, designer of Subnautica 2, has used an unusual metaphor to describe the human connection with survival games, suggesting that “we are all little monkeys.” During a recent interview with Edge magazine, Gallegos explained that this idea resonates with the human nature of seeking shelter and food, essential attributes in survival games that attract a wide audience.

The title Subnautica 2, which is expected to launch in Early Access in 2026, has faced recent turmoil following the sudden firing of several of its creators, which has triggered a call for a boycott from some fans.

We are all little monkeys

Gallegos also shared an anecdote that underscores the accessibility of survival games. He recalled a moment when he observed a child playing Astroneer without any prior guidance. To his surprise, the child managed to build a complex base, which led him to conclude that the mechanics of these games are simple enough to attract both children and adults.

In a remarkable turn in the video game development landscape, Krafton has acquired Last Epoch, a popular action role-playing game. The game’s development leader, referring to the recent controversy surrounding Subnautica 2, expressed confidence that the communication challenges affecting their project will not be repeated. “There is a lot of misinformation,” he commented, suggesting that the situation may have been misinterpreted by the public.

As Subnautica 2 fans await more news about the game, the video game industry closely watches how this multi-layered story unfolds, marked by creativity, challenges, and uncertainty about the future of the series.
