The Mummy is going to return with the original actors, but it will erase one of the previous installments from the canon

Debates among fans about which is the best movie within film sagas like Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings are common phenomena in the film fandom. This movie, which premiered in 2008, was subject to criticism and discontent among franchise followers, partly due to the absence of actress Rachel Weisz, whose role was taken over by Maria Bello due to personal commitments.

A movie without Rachel Weisz

The arrival of a new installment, The Mummy 4, has generated expectations among fans. This fourth chapter is scheduled for release on May 19, 2028, and will feature the return of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, which could rekindle interest in the saga. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for revitalizing the Scream series, have indicated that the script is solid and promise that the new film will have “all the heart and personality you could expect.”

One of the most controversial decisions made by the new directors has been to clarify that The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is not part of the canon of the series. In the words of Bettinelli-Olpin, “Rachel is in this. That should answer your question,” suggesting that the O’Connell’s adventures in China will be considered irrelevant to the continuity of the saga. Meanwhile, enthusiasm for the new movie seems to be growing, with the aim of doing justice to a franchise that has been very beloved by its fans despite the ups and downs it has faced.

Directed by Lee Cronin, the new version of The Mummy promises a chilling twist on the adventures of the past starring Brendan Fraser. This reinterpretation, which focuses more on horror than adventure, brings with it a plot that gives a particular twist to the mummy myth, reinventing it as a missing young woman. The story follows the daughter of a journalist who, after disappearing in the desert, returns eight years later, turning a much-anticipated family reunion into a true nightmare.

A movie shrouded in secrecy

The style of the film evokes the recent production Bring Her Back, in which a mother resorts to forbidden magic to try to resurrect her daughter, suggesting that The Mummy will also explore dark and emotional themes in its narrative. Unlike the 2017 remake starring Tom Cruise, this project does not seek to connect with the previous franchise, establishing itself as the second attempt to reboot The Mummy with a terrifying approach in the last decade.

However, the project has generated controversy. It has been reported that James Wan, a recognized producer in the horror field, supposedly walked out of a preview screening of the film, which has raised eyebrows and generated skepticism among fans and critics of the genre. Some rumors suggest that this discontent may be related to the direction that Cronin has taken in his narrative.

With its premiere scheduled for April 17, viewers will have the opportunity to judge for themselves whether this new installment manages to capture the terror and essence that characterize it. Meanwhile, a close eye will be kept on any additional developments related to this project, which has sparked as much enthusiasm as doubts in the film community.

Brendan Fraser has shared his excitement about the possibility of participating in a fourth installment of the iconic Mummy saga. After two decades, the actor has expressed his desire to make the movie he has always dreamed of, and the media has begun to shape this wish.

Two decades to return to The Mummy

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Fraser stated that he has been waiting for 20 years for the opportunity to reprise the role that catapulted him to stardom. “I have always wanted to make this movie and now it seems to be materializing,” said the actor, who has become a symbol of resilience in the film industry after a period of personal challenges in his life.

The news that Universal is developing a fourth film of The Mummy was confirmed by Variety earlier this month. This announcement has resonated among the franchise’s fans, who have kept alive the hope for a return to the adventures of the charismatic explorer Rick O’Connell, played by Fraser.

Fraser also reflected on the impact that his role in the original trilogy had on his career and on popular culture, fondly recalling the experiences he had during filming. “The legacy of those films has been significant, and I would love to contribute to a new story that does justice to the saga,” he added.

Although not many details have been revealed about the plot or the creative team behind this new installment, fans’ hope of seeing Fraser in action once again is renewed with each new statement. The possibility of seeing The Mummy 4 continues to generate great interest and speculation in the film community.

The wait is over for fans of The Mummy, as it has been confirmed that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will reunite to star in the fourth installment of the saga, seventeen years after The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The news has been backed by several U.S. sources, and although details about the plot are scarce, it is anticipated that the story will address how the iconic characters of Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan have changed over time.

The Mummy Returns

The project will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for their work on Scream and Ready or Not. Although this duo has a profile predominantly linked to horror films, it is expected that they will adapt their style to the family and adventure nature that characterizes the Mummy saga. Given the long absence of Fraser and Weisz in these roles, it is likely that the narrative will explore themes of aging and nostalgia for past adventures.

The return of The Mummy had been in the air for years, especially after Universal Pictures’ failed attempt to relaunch the franchise with a horror adaptation in 2017. That project, which starred Tom Cruise, failed to capture the audience’s attention, leading the studios to rethink their approach. Now, with this new installment, Universal seems to be seeking a return to the franchise’s roots.

Apart from this movie, another film project titled The Resurrected is also in development, which will premiere in 2026. Although it will not be directly related to the new installment of The Mummy, it presents an intriguing plot about the return of a daughter and her connection to an Egyptian mummy. This new approach could suggest a diversification within the universe of The Mummy, attracting both new and old fans of the adventures of these iconic characters.

The Mummy remains one of the great adventure films in history

Since its release, The Mummy has been recognized for its ability to provide exciting and accessible entertainment, maintaining a balance between adventure and horror. With a charismatic cast and notable visual effects for its time, the film turned out to be a summer blockbuster and has remained in the collective memory as one of the great adventure films of modern cinema.

It is important to highlight that the first installment of the trilogy is considered the most outstanding, although Disney+ has also included the sequels: The Mummy Returns, which helped boost Dwayne Johnson’s career, and the less favored The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. With the recent interest in the franchise, rumors are emerging about the possibility of a new Mummy movie, which according to various sources, could surpass the performance of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, whose box office results did not meet expectations.

This addition to Disney+ not only gives new viewers the chance to enjoy The Mummy, but also allows those who grew up with the film to relive its thrilling adventures. Undoubtedly, this movie has left an indelible mark on the genre and remains relevant in popular culture.

Universal Pictures is trying to revitalize its failed attempt to create a cinematic universe known as Dark Universe with a new approach for one of its most iconic franchises: The Mummy. The original project, which featured a star-studded cast including Tom Cruise, failed miserably despite its large budget. The Mummy, released in 2017 under the direction of Alex Kurtzman, received a disastrous 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, being criticized for its lack of identity and tonal coherence.

Is the second time the charm?

That movie, which aimed to kick off an interconnected universe of classic monsters, ended up being a failed attempt to reflect the foundations of the successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Tom Cruise played a treasure hunter facing an ancient princess, the story was considered more of a vehicle for the actor than a proper adventure. Its box office gross of just over 400 million dollars was not enough to justify its production, leading Universal to abort plans for the Dark Universe, except for the successful adaptation of The Invisible Man.

However, recent reports indicate that Universal Pictures, in collaboration with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, has begun production on a new version of The Mummy in Ireland. This proposal promises a completely renewed approach that is disconnected from previous adaptations. With director and screenwriter Lee Cronin at the helm, the new project will feature a cast that includes Laia Costa, Jack Reynor, May Calamawy, Veronica Falcon, and Mai Elghety.

The exact plot has not yet been revealed, but the new version promises to bring a fresh air to the story, moving away from the previous approach. Expectations are rising among genre fans and filmmakers, who see this attempt as an opportunity to repair the legacy of The Mummy in the history of horror cinema.
