Blumhouse Productions will continue making movies of The Exorcist despite the resounding failure of its latest installment

Blumhouse Productions seems determined to move forward with its new trilogy of The Exorcist, despite the recent commercial failure of The Exorcist: Believer. This latest installment grossed 136 million dollars worldwide, a result that, while suggesting a relative success on a budget of 30 million, does not meet the expectations of entertainment giants Universal and Peacock, who shelled out 400 million dollars for the rights to the trilogy. Blumhouse Productions seems determined to move forward with its new Exorcist trilogy, despite the recent commercial failure of The Exorcist: Believer. This latest installment grossed $136 million worldwide, a result that, although it suggests a relative success on a budget of $30 million, does not meet the expectations of entertainment giants Universal and Peacock, who shelled out $400 million for the rights to the trilogy.

A movie that has not met expectations

To revitalize this iconic horror franchise, Blumhouse has taken bold steps by recruiting renowned director Mike Flanagan, known for his expertise in creating successful sequels, such as The Origin of Evil and Doctor Sleep. Flanagan, who recently captivated audiences with The Life of Chuck, will incorporate his innovative vision to attract both horror fans and new generations of viewers.

The most surprising news is the casting of Scarlett Johansson as the lead in the upcoming installment. Johansson, one of the most prominent actresses in the industry, brings a new dimension to the project, generating expectations about how her involvement may influence both the narrative and the box office. As the audience awaits more details about the script and the characters, interest in this new chapter of The Exorcist intensifies.

Blumhouse’s strategy to continue with the trilogy, despite the evident financial risks, reflects an unwavering faith in the franchise’s potential and in Flanagan’s ability to restore it to its former glory. With the public’s eyes on this new creative direction, it will be fascinating to see how the story unfolds and whether it will succeed in reviving the legacy of horror that The Exorcist has represented over the decades.

The sequel to the horror movie Black Phone, produced by Universal and Blumhouse, has had a strong opening, grossing 42 million dollars in its first weekend globally. The film, which follows the line of its successful predecessor from 2022, continues to explore psychological horror with an intriguing plot that has captured the attention of both critics and audiences.

The sequel to a success has also managed to be a success

Of the 42 million dollars raised, 26.5 million comes from the United States and Canada, standing out as the main market for this release. The rest, 15.5 million, was distributed among 71 international territories, a figure that, although significant, suggests that the film could have greater growth potential in the global market as the marketing campaign develops and positive reviews solidify.

The film has received various opinions, but it seems to have managed to connect with horror genre lovers. Many critics highlight its tense atmosphere, as well as memorable performances that elevate the source material. The combination of Blumhouse’s creative direction and the impactful narrative presented by Black Phone in its first installment has created a solid foundation for its sequel, attracting the attention not only of horror fans but also of those who enjoy complex and emotional stories.

The good reception at the box office suggests that Black Phone 2 could be on its way to becoming a new success within the genre. However, despite the good numbers, there is always the possibility that creative approaches may vary in sequels, which often leads to speculation. In this sense, it can be considered that the film has the potential to evolve its narrative in future installments, if the studios decide to continue developing this unsettling saga.

This attitude reflects a commitment to preserving the integrity of the first installment and avoiding a rushed production that prioritizes economic gain over artistic value.

Leigh Wannell still has to make a less than brilliant movie

The 2020 film, which had a budget of only 7 million dollars, managed to gross over 155 million globally, becoming an unexpected box office success, especially considering that its release coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This context complicated the possibility of an immediate sequel, but Moss assures that the team is still working on it and looking for a suitable script that meets expectations.

Moss emphasizes that the film is not a remake, but a reinterpretation of the classic concept by H.G. Wells. This characteristic gives it a unique identity in a cinematic environment where reboots and tributes abound. The actress expressed her gratitude to Universal and Blumhouse for their ethical approach to the project and for their desire to create a sequel that is truly worthwhile, rather than opting for a quick release that could have generated immediate profits.

The original film, which focused on the story of Cecilia, a woman tormented by her invisible ex-boyfriend, received praise for its ability to combine psychological horror with an innovative plot. As the development of the sequel progresses, fans remain on the lookout, as Moss and the team seek to deliver a product that lives up to its predecessor, highlighting the importance of a well-crafted narrative in an environment filled with sequels and reboots.

The horror franchise that has unexpectedly taken the world by storm, forcing you to make not a single sound, is coming to streaming

When we think of horror franchises, we always think of movies from the 90s and 00s. In the last 20 years, it seems that the ability to create great horror franchises has been lost, with the notable exception of Blumhouse and everything that has come out around the Insidious/The Conjuring universe. But the reality is that there is at least one other franchise that has managed to take off in recent years, and it did so almost unexpectedly. Taking its director to almost instant stardom. This franchise is A Quiet Place, or Un lugar tranquilo in its original title for the American audience. A franchise that currently spans three movies and a video game, with a fourth installment announced, and whose first two films are now available on streaming services for you to enjoy.

An unexpected success for the industry

The original movie premiered in 2018 under the direction of John Krasinski. Starring Emily Blunt and Krasinski himself, the film placed us in a terrible situation: civilization has ended due to a species that has invaded us and hunts us down. Fortunately for us, they are blind. Unfortunately, they have very sharp hearing. The film narrates the daily life of a mother and father struggling to raise their children in a post-apocalyptic world where any sound, at the wrong moment, can lead to death.

Using sign language very ingeniously and placing a strong emphasis on the visual, the film stood out for the cleverness of its premise. Here, the terror does not arise from the threat itself, as much as from its presence: everything becomes a potential threat, since the slightest sound can be a death sentence for the whole family. And the film constantly exploits this by putting them in situations where it is difficult not to make any sound. Accidentally or not.

With a modest budget of 17 million, Paramount Pictures must have celebrated with champagne when they saw the numbers the movie was generating. Reaching a worldwide gross of 341 million, even with the insane 86 million dollar advertising campaign they had invested in it, they managed to make it a resounding success.

Even among audiences and critics, it seems to have worked spectacularly. With an 82 out of 100 on Metacritic and a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it is one of the most celebrated films of 2018.

Lowering expectations, but staying strong

A Quiet Place Part II, like any worthy sequel, arrived shortly after. Although not without problems. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to delay the release by almost a year, the film’s budget increased to nearly 60 million, and the marketing budget skyrocketed. But with Krasinski back at the helm and his main actors reprising their roles, now adding Cillian Murphy and Noah Jupe to the cast, the film developed the themes of the first one, emphasizing the particularities of the unique universe they had created.

Something that didn’t seem to be enough. Although it was a success, it wasn’t the same success as the previous one. It raised just under 300 million dollars and the critics would be notably less passionate. Although with a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, it would barely achieve a 71 on Metacritic, leaving the feeling that it was a worthy sequel, but perhaps not as impactful and well-rounded as the original.

Its third part, A Quiet Place: Day One, and its video game, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, both premiered in 2024. In both cases, it can be summarized that they followed the path of the previous sequel: relatively low-budget productions compared to Hollywood blockbusters or AAA video games, which did not achieve the success or impact of the original film, but performed well with critics and exceeded box office and sales expectations. These are two more successes for the franchise.

Now the first two movies of the franchise are coming to HBO Max, so you can see if this franchise is really that great. And if you want more, A Quiet Place: Day One is available for streaming on SkyShowtime. Even if you’ll still have to wait a bit to see its fourth installment: until July 9, 2027.

Oren Koules, producer of the successful series Saw, has confirmed that Saw 11 will not take place due to creative disagreements with his production partner Mark Burg. Koules indicated that there were significant differences regarding the direction the film should take, which led to the cancellation of the project, which was in development at Lionsgate with a tentative release date for September 2025.

A movie with a very clear timeline

Despite the cancellation being surprising, Koules had previously shared his enthusiasm for the return of Synnøve Macody Lund, who played the villain Cecilia Pederson in Saw X. According to him, the script they had proposed to continue the story just 30 seconds after the ending of Saw X. However, the conflict between Koules and Burg, as well as internal tensions at Lionsgate, ultimately led to the decision to dismiss the film.

A notable factor in this situation is the recent acquisition of the rights to the Saw franchise by Blumhouse, indicating that Twisted Pictures, the studio that produced all previous installments, will not be directly involved in future productions. With this transaction, the original creator of the series, James Wan, could have the opportunity to return as writer and director in a hypothetical eleventh installment.

It is worth noting that Wan was initially linked to the franchise, directing and writing the first film in 2004, as well as the first two sequels. There is a possibility that, with the rights to Saw in the hands of Blumhouse, Wan will resume his creative role in future projects. The horror scene is watching closely how this new phase will develop for one of the most iconic sagas in horror cinema.

This year, Blumhouse’s attempt to revitalize Universal’s classic monsters with a low-budget approach has shown its limitations, particularly highlighted by its version of The Wolf Man. This new adaptation presents itself as an antithesis to the ambitious 2010 film, which cost 150 million dollars and was a failure both at the box office and critically, barely grossing that same amount. Despite the expectations, the relaunch of this iconic character failed to connect with both audiences and critics.

An iconic story with a new finish

In the story, Lawrence Talbot returns to his hometown of Blackmoor after the tragic loss of his mother. His mission is to help his brother’s fiancée find him after his mysterious disappearance. The urgency increases with the presence of a monster lurking in the woods, causing attacks during the full moon nights. This premise leads Talbot to discover unexpected facets of himself, in a tale that seeks to combine classic horror with a more contemporary approach.

Classic monsters, including the werewolf, have had frequent adaptations over time, reflecting the priorities of cinema in each era. From the early attempts at horror in the 30s to the more melodic versions of the 90s, each era has interpreted these characters in its own way. This new The Wolf Man is set in a period where blockbusters begin to feel saturated by digital effects and repeated formulas.

Despite not being a stellar film, directed by Joe Johnston, it maintains a certain cinematic craftsmanship, achieving inspired moments and a pace that prevents it from becoming monotonous. Although the film has not reached the level of excellence of other works by Johnston, it presents a suitable mix of effects and narrative, somewhat surpassing what Blumhouse has offered this year. And for a stellar performance, we still have Eggers’ werewolf.

Video game adaptations to film rarely turn out well. This is not the fault of the video game, but of the film industry. Neither are the titles chosen for adaptation well, nor is the original work respected, nor is there an attempt to understand what makes it special. It also doesn’t help that both are audiovisual media, making it too easy to make comparisons. This creates terrible situations where, no matter what is done, things are going to go wrong. It becomes very important to know which video games can be adapted and, above all, who and how can do it.

If a production company has had an excellent eye for capturing the pulse of the audience, it is Blumhouse. Their horror productions work excellently, especially among a young audience, knowing how to target them with surgical precision. This is something they have also demonstrated by licensing titles to turn into movies.

A success thanks to understanding your audience

This was the case with Five Nights at Freddy’s. An adaptation of the video game by Scott Cawthon first published in 2014, the movie aimed to recreate the same sensations that the video game provoked. And it seems to have succeeded. With a budget of just 20 million dollars, it managed to gross almost 300 million, even though critics panned the film in the press. With a 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 213 reviews, and a 33 out of 100 on Metacritic, the film might seem like a failure. Except that audience scores place it around 77% on PostTrak.

What accounts for such a difference between the critics’ and the audience’s opinions? Not that either side is wrong. Or not exactly. Because Five Nights at Freddy’s does something spectacularly well, and that is knowing how to address a very specific audience, young fans of the video game, and sticking exclusively to their interests.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a video game saga where we play the role of a security guard at a pizzeria where there are strange animatronic mascots. While we watch these mascots through the cameras, they won’t move, but when we stop looking at them, they will start moving erratically, and at some point, they will head towards where we are. Our goal is to survive until morning without being hunted by the mascots, considering that there are more mascots than cameras and more places they can move to than we can monitor.

This premise has hooked several generations of kids, turning it into a bestseller. Success that can be explained by its spread through YouTube and Twitch, which also explains the misunderstanding it generates among older generations, who see in these games a whole series of clichés without particular charm. This explains the reaction of the critics.

A risk that the movie faced was trying to make the video game deeper. Adding layers, ironizing or parodying what the original is. The movie does none of that and takes the original video game seriously, adapting it in the strictest way possible, expanding it and adding aspects of its internal lore, reinforcing the possibilities of the game in cinematic terms. Something that would later be done by a Minecraft movie. And therein lies its success. It offers exactly what its fans want: a Five Nights at Freddy’s movie.

A movie you can watch again at home

This makes the movie full of clichés, shallow, and of little interest to those who have already seen a lot of horror films. But it is a delight for those who are fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s or, in general, have hardly seen any horror in their lives and are not familiar with its tropes. Demonstrating that sometimes, the most basic is what works best.

Something you can check for yourself, because Five Nights at Freddy’s arrives on streaming on Thursday, June 19, specifically on Movistar+. This gives us the opportunity to see this great box office success, even if it didn’t please the critics, arriving at the perfect time. Why? Because the second part, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, will be released at the end of the year. Specifically, in December, in another demonstration that this is aimed at a young audience: this time they are not targeting Halloween, but directly Christmas, when kids will be on vacation.

Something that demonstrates Blumhouse’s good eye. Especially when they want to repeat this move in the future, adapting another horror video game that caused a stir among YouTubers and streamers: Phasmophobia. Although this bet seems riskier, being even more cliché and with perhaps a less youthful audience, it remains to be seen if they will succeed again. Because what is clear is that, at Blumhouse, they know where to put their money.

James Wan, acclaimed director known for his work in the horror genre, is once again taking the reins of the Saw franchise, a milestone in his career that began with the low-budget filming of the first installment in 2004. The franchise has shared an uncertain fate, especially after the release of Saw X in 2023 and the subsequent removal of Saw XI from the release calendar. However, the recent acquisition of half of the franchise rights by Blumhouse, which merged with Wan’s company, Atomic Monster, could mark a significant change.

James Wan regains the rights to his creation

Blumhouse, led by Jason Blum, has earned a reputation for revitalizing horror franchises, and with the new management control of Saw, there are hopes that it can give a new boost to the saga. According to recent statements from Saw XI co-writer Patrick Melton, the film’s script presents a ‘very timely’ concept, suggesting that it could align with the current interests of the audience. This adds a layer of expectation around what could result from this new collaboration.

Wan, who had not been directly involved in a Saw movie since co-writing Saw III, has remained as an executive producer on later installments. His return to creative control could mean a renewed focus on quality and storytelling in future installments. Some rumors suggest that Wan might even take on a role behind the camera, which would add a distinctive touch to the upcoming film.

Despite the fact that Saw has faced difficulties in recent years, such as the removal of Saw XI from the release calendar and the uncertainty surrounding its iconic characters, it seems that the franchise has a new opportunity to rise again and captivate horror fans once more.

The director and lead developer of Kinetic Games, Daniel Knight, stated in a press release that the team is “excited” about the announcement of the project, which represents a new chapter for the game that has had a lasting impact on the gaming community.

A game that has the perfect keys for cinematic success

Launched in early access on Steam in 2020, Phasmophobia stood out as a popular title among groups of friends looking for terrifying entertainment during the pandemic, selling over 22 million copies. This figure demonstrates not only its commercial success but also its impact on video game culture. The game has expanded its reach by debuting last year on platforms like Xbox and PlayStation, suggesting an even broader fan base.

Regarding its future in the video game realm, a significant update called Chronicle is expected, which will improve the leveling and rewards system. Additionally, an update called Horror 2.0 is planned, which will increase the difficulty, providing scarier experiences for players. Although a release date for the movie has not been announced, it is worth noting that adaptations of video games are often announced without being realized. However, the recent success of the movie Five Nights at Freddy’s could indicate that Blumhouse has the capability to successfully bring Phasmophobia to the big screen.

Universal Pictures is trying to revitalize its failed attempt to create a cinematic universe known as Dark Universe with a new approach for one of its most iconic franchises: The Mummy. The original project, which featured a star-studded cast including Tom Cruise, failed miserably despite its large budget. The Mummy, released in 2017 under the direction of Alex Kurtzman, received a disastrous 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, being criticized for its lack of identity and tonal coherence.

Is the second time the charm?

That movie, which aimed to kick off an interconnected universe of classic monsters, ended up being a failed attempt to reflect the foundations of the successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Tom Cruise played a treasure hunter facing an ancient princess, the story was considered more of a vehicle for the actor than a proper adventure. Its box office gross of just over 400 million dollars was not enough to justify its production, leading Universal to abort plans for the Dark Universe, except for the successful adaptation of The Invisible Man.

However, recent reports indicate that Universal Pictures, in collaboration with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, has begun production on a new version of The Mummy in Ireland. This proposal promises a completely renewed approach that is disconnected from previous adaptations. With director and screenwriter Lee Cronin at the helm, the new project will feature a cast that includes Laia Costa, Jack Reynor, May Calamawy, Veronica Falcon, and Mai Elghety.

The exact plot has not yet been revealed, but the new version promises to bring a fresh air to the story, moving away from the previous approach. Expectations are rising among genre fans and filmmakers, who see this attempt as an opportunity to repair the legacy of The Mummy in the history of horror cinema.
