After 20 years without a new sequel to Miss Congeniality, the original film has acquired cult status, making it an attractive candidate in the current era of “legacy sequels”. In this context, Hollywood is looking to revive classic franchises to capitalize on audience nostalgia, and the work starring Sandra Bullock does not seem to be the exception.
A franchise that its protagonist wants to return to
Recently, Heather Burns, who played Miss Rhode Island in both movies, expressed her enthusiasm for returning to the role if given the opportunity. In an interview with People magazine, Burns commented: “I made lifelong friends working with Sandra Bullock. It would be so much fun,” not hiding her desire to revive the magic of the franchise. Although she admits that her contact with Bullock has been limited since the actress won an Oscar, her affection for the project is evident.
Film studios, like Warner Bros, review public interest on social media to decide on the production of new movies, a process that often raises questions about its validity. With several cult films being considered for new installments, from Jennifer’s Body to other classics from the early millennium, it’s possible that Miss Congeniality will enter the list of projects under discussion.
The production company has had success in the past with both installments of Miss Congeniality, which could make them reconsider a third part. In light of the search for new film franchises and the potential that the title has to attract fans, the possibility of a sequel doesn’t seem so far-fetched. Nostalgia sells, and Warner Bros will take note of every sign of interest that the public may express in the coming months.
