The last person to play ‘Pokémon’ on Nintendo 3DS says goodbye to the servers

There are still a few survivors left, without access to the online options but witnessing, in a fascinating way, the gradual destruction of an already silent world, feeling like the last survivors standing. And now, ‘Pokémon’ has lost the last of them.

Nintendo knew that their fans were tough, but perhaps not as much as they have shown by shutting down the online servers of games like ‘Splatoon‘, ‘Mario Kart 7’ or ‘Pokémon X/Y’. There are still a few survivors, without access to online options but attending, in a fascinating way, the gradual destruction of an already silent world, feeling like the last survivors standing. And now, ‘Pokémon’ has lost its last one.

It will no longer be done with everyone

After the closure of the 3DS and Wii U servers, there was only one person willing to never turn off her console: Amanda. And she has lasted quite a while: specifically, 28 days, 23 hours, and 30 minutes before giving in to the evidence and finally turning off her handheld console. At least she didn’t leave without sending a message to all those who were still supporting her.

“I just want to thank everyone who cheered me on throughout the last month while I resisted being online. I never thought I would end up being the last player of Pokémon on Nintendo Network, but it happened”. And yes, it’s true: the audience was supporting her: even in the moments when she feared damaging her Nintendo 3DS she kept it on. Until the end.

However, everything comes to an end, and before going back into anonymity, he has taken the opportunity to make it clear that this is “the end of an era”, bidding farewell to the last player of ‘Mario Kart 7’ who can no longer find anyone to race with. Now it’s official. It has been almost a month, but Nintendo Network for 3DS is completely dead. The Wii U still has a little more time, but sooner or later it will also fall. It is the fate of destiny.

Beaches have started to appear in places where there were none. And the culprit is… Pokémon Go.

In the maps of the United States, beaches have started to appear that shouldn’t be there because of a single creature.

‘Pokémon Go’ managed to get people who had never moved in their lives to suddenly start walking, and breathe new life into a franchise that was already in pretty good shape. But what no one expected is that it would permanently modify geography. Well, something like that. And it’s because beaches have started to appear on maps of the United States that shouldn’t be there because of a single creature.

There is no beach here, oh well

It all started on April 22, when Niantic announced that Wiglett could appear at any time… but players quickly guessed that it only appeared near beach and coastal areas. Great for spring and warm weather, not so great for those who live in a central location in each country (or in an inland country). Does that mean they would have to travel to complete the Pokédex? Of course not.

It turns out that ‘Pokémon Go’ uses OpenStreetMaps as its base, a kind of collaborative Google Maps where, like Wikipedia, everyone can add their real-life findings. And of course, players started creating new beaches everywhere, even new ones shaped like Pokéballs, so that there is no doubt about who is modifying the topography.

Suddenly, golf courses, playgrounds, and even major roads were labeled as “beaches,” with two interests at stake: on one hand, trainers who want to catch their Wiglett no matter what. On the other hand, the creators of OpenStreetMaps, who believe that this corrupts their original idea and want no errors in their app.

Ash Ketchum didn’t have these things happen to him, to be honest.

The new controversy of ‘Pokémon Go’ is the ugliness of the trainers

Many are saying that their avatars are now noticeably uglier. It might seem trivial or like a complaint thrown into the void, but the truth is there’s merit to it.

It may not seem like it, but the truth is that there are still millions of people playing Pokémon Go every day. And, luckily, Niantic’s game has continued to improve little by little until it became what it always wanted (and should have been): the closest thing we will ever have to catching Rattatas and Charmanders in real life. But of course, not all the decisions made lately have pleased the fans, who have suddenly found themselves with a controversial update for the most absurd reason. And, for once, the complaints make sense.

Pokeugliness

It turns out that this same Wednesday Niantic has released an update in which, supposedly, it was going to make trainers look more like players with different options to add to the characters. The problem? Many say that their avatars are now noticeably uglier. It may seem trivial or a complaint thrown into the void, but the truth is that it has a basis.

The new avatars of Pokémon Go are not only uglier: in some cases, they are real aberrations. On paper, everything seems very nice: players will have more body options, skin tones, and more, and finally, we will be able to see people with a non-normative body. The problem is that there has been an error (or several) and instead of being a display of diversity, it has made everyone look like they came out of ‘Freaks’.

Faces staring into nothingness, gigantic hands, disproportionate arms, sudden changes in skin tone… Some have said it looks like a flashlight is pointing at their face, and of course, people who have decided to cover their faces from now on. Niantic is supposed to release a way to fix it sooner or later. Until then, it’s better for players not to take the slogan “now your avatar looks more like you” to heart. For the sake of their ego.

Pokémon announces a new collectible card game for mobile… And it will not use NFTs, apparently

It’s no wonder, then, that years after the legendary and memorable card game for Game Boy Advance, ‘Pokémon’ launches again to try to scratch some more money on mobile phones.

If you still see the collectible card game Pokémon as something new, think again, because they have been with us since October 1996. In fact, there are over 15,000 different cards in total, and just to give you an idea, the rarest one (“Pikachu Illustrator”) has reached the staggering amount of 5,275,000 dollars in auction. It’s not surprising, then, that years after the legendary and memorable card game for Game Boy Advance, Pokémon is launching again to try to make some more money on mobile phones.

Get all the cards!

‘Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket’ was announced yesterday during the Pokémon Direct, and although we have only seen a trailer, we can clearly see that it will emphasize online collecting, presumably partly free and partly with microtransactions. Nothing new. But fans were already suspicious, thinking that this could be an evolution. Not of the Pokémon, precisely, but of the NFTs that can be sold at exorbitant prices, creating the usual bubble that we sadly know from a couple of years ago.

Fortunately, The Pokémon Company has responded to the challenge by saying that they do not approve of NFTs and, in fact, if they see non-fungible tokens of the franchise, they are unofficial. In other words, crystal clear. For now, all we know is that players of the Pokémon trading card game, still without a release date, will be able to open two free packs daily. For everything else (and to get the coveted shiny cards), you’ll have to pay. Will The Pokémon Company’s gamble pay off? I, as a fan of the Game Boy Advance game, have to admit that I’m already looking forward to trying it. Watch out, ‘Marvel Snap’.

Temtem, the Spanish Pokémon, will come to an end someday (and that’s good news)

However, Enrique Paños, its director, has said that infinite content cannot always be provided to fans. In other words, no matter how MMO it is, it will eventually have an end someday.

With the arrival of ‘Palworld‘ and its obvious plagiarism of ‘Pokémon’, many of us immediately thought of ‘Temtem’, a Spanish MMO that is basically what the Nintendo saga could have been and will never be. The game was released worldwide in 2022 after two years of Early Access and sold 500,000 copies in just the first month. That’s a huge success. However, Enrique Paños, its director, has said that fans cannot always have infinite content. In other words, no matter how much of an MMO it is, it will eventually have an ending.

Tem Tem Go

It has been through the game’s Discord, where Paños has stated, in front of some disappointed fans, that they cannot expect infinite content: “The community expects us to add infinite content, which is costly in terms of time and money. MMO does not mean infinite. It is compared to other MMOs even though in Crema we have clarified since 2018 that it will not be like those MMOs”. The problem is, as always, the budget: MMOs are usually free-to-play with microtransactions or have a subscription model, while ‘Temtem’ is paid once and that’s it.

But of course, players don’t like it at all that Crema does cosmetic microtransactions (such as costumes) and, at this point, the producer has said that instead of creating a huge content for ‘Temtem’ they prefer to focus on a sequel or a spin-off, calling it “a complete game”. After the news went viral, they have reappeared stating that they are still working on ‘Temtem’ and it will have more updates: simply, at the same time, they are already working on what comes next.

And frankly, it’s not bad news that games have a beginning and an end instead of staying forever in a loop of updates that only benefits the most hardcore fans. No one can expect to spend 44 euros one day and have the game updated for a lifetime, right?
