In less than a month, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the new Spider-Man movie, will be released. Sony has bet everything this year that it will perform extraordinarily well, and this is evident in the marketing campaign they are running: not only advertising but also all those involved speaking with the press. This has included Tom Holland doing something tremendously unexpected. He has talked about what he hopes for what will come after he stops being Spider-Man.
An actor thinking about the future
In an interview with Empire, Holland talked about how “for whoever is next, whether it’s Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, or something like that, I would love to be involved in creating the next chapter,” emphasizing that it doesn’t have to be Spider-Man, Peter Parker: it could be another superhero who takes up the mantle. “I don’t know what it will be like. But I could do what Robert Downey Jr. did for me, then I would feel completely happy to step away.”
Here Holland refers to how he debuted in the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, aligning himself with Tony Stark, who became a mentor to his character in his next film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thus creating a relationship between the characters that added more meaning and depth to their integration into the Marvel cinematic universe.
Although many people have wanted to see in Holland’s words a hint of what is to come, there is no official plan regarding him stopping being Spider-Man or that there will be any other associated character introduced to replace him. Therefore, we should read it only as a personal wish, even if, given how the MCU works and the relationship between Sony and Marvel, it is not far-fetched that it could end up happening.
