The studio A24, popular for hits like Everything Everywhere All at Once or Midsommar, has just released the trailer for Y2K, a teenage comedy set on New Year’s Eve 1999, when the world was concerned about the Y2K bug, a supposed computer glitch that could cause a global collapse.
Although in reality this problem only caused minor failures, in the movie, directed by Kyle Mooney, the situation gets out of control when the machines rebel against humanity… unleashing the Apocalypse that many believed at that time. At that moment, the young protagonist, along with his friends, must survive this chaos while trying to win over the girl of his dreams.
Apocalypse, teenagers, and an unrequited love
The cast of Y2K includes Rachel Zegler, the new Disney’s Snow White, Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison, who play a trio of teenagers confronted with artificial intelligences that transform into dangerous weapons. The cast is completed by actors such as Mason Gooding, Alicia Silverstone, and The Kid Laroi. Jonah Hill and Christopher Storer are in charge of executive production, seeking to resemble the style of 90s and 2000s teen comedies, such as Superbad and Adventureland. It will be released in US theaters on September 6th.
