Nintendo is in the spotlight with the anticipated arrival of the Switch 2, considered the most awaited console in years. The Japanese company has cultivated a strong fan base that eagerly awaits the launch, especially with the promise of better technical capabilities and exclusive titles like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.
Nintendo has defenders… among the people who care the least about players
However, the gaming community is dissatisfied with the pricing policy of the new console and its games, which have seen an increase compared to the previous generation. In a context where fans expect a more accessible approach, the price escalation has sparked debate among fans and industry experts.
In this regard, Trip Hawkins, founder of Electronic Arts, has defended Nintendo, arguing that current prices are justified by the value the platform offers. In a recent post on Medium, Hawkins noted that “based on hours of gameplay and its value, Nintendo’s prices are perfectly reasonable”. He also expressed his confidence that the Switch 2 will surpass 100 million units sold, just like its predecessor, solidifying its place as one of the company’s most successful consoles.
Hawkins also highlighted Nintendo’s ability to retain its audience over the decades, stating that “Nintendo’s brands are not just for kids”. Players who grew up with the NES, many of whom are now adults with children, have created an intergenerational ecosystem that can sustain the company’s pricing business strategy.
As the launch of the Switch 2 approaches, the debates about its economic accessibility and the value provided are crucial topics that will continue to resonate within the gaming community.
