Jack Douglas Teixeira, 21, a member of the Air National Guard, is the suspect in the largest leak so far about the U.S. role in the Ukraine war.
In a chat room called Thug Shaker Central on Discord he was known as “OG”. He now faces charges related to the U.S. Espionage Act, which could carry a very high penalty.
Teixeira graduated in 2020 from his hometown high school in North Dighton, Massachusetts. A year earlier, he enlisted in the Massachusetts Air National Guard – a U.S. Air Force Reserve – joining the 102nd Intelligence Wing.
Last July, Teixeira was promoted to pilot first class and was stationed at Otis Air National Guard Base, west of Cape Cod.
According to his service record, his title is Cyber Transport Systems Officer. The official Air Force website notes that personnel assigned to Cyber Transport Systems positions are responsible for the operation of the Air Force’s global communications network.
Discord, the gamer app through which everything was leaked
He was reportedly known to be the leader of an invitation-only Discord chat created in 2020. Thug Shaker Central had about 30 members from various countries.
The Washington Post reported that the group had exchanged “offensive memes and jokes,” watched movies together and prayed. One chat room member stated that Teixeira was a charismatic young man with a fondness for guns.
Other members told the media that Teixeira was older than most members of the group and seemed intent on impressing them.

One of them told the New York Times, “He was the man, the myth. And he was the legend. Everybody respected him.” According to the Post, Teixeira told the group that he worked in a facility where phones were banned.
And while he started out writing confidential information and sharing it in the chat room, he soon started sharing photos of the confidential files directly. Soon he started directly sharing photos of confidential files. The reason? The group members weren’t paying attention or believing the military man’s word.
Jack Douglas Teixeira was arrested yesterday by the FBI and faces very serious charges that could land him behind bars for many, many years.
It is unbelievable how a soldier can endanger the lives of his comrades in enemy territory just to attract attention.
