A page explaining the results states that the material is generated using ChatGPT and that TikTok displays the content when it’s relevant.
TikTok is testing a more robust search results page, which includes the use of generative AI. The feature appears to be new and is called “search highlights”. The idea is to become a kind of serious search engine.
A snippet of the AI results appears at the top of some search result pages, and clicking on the section opens a new page with the complete answer. In quick tests, the journalist from The Verge was able to find AI results for queries about recipes or topics like “best laptops 2024”.

The video platform has been adding more and more features to its in-app search. Last fall, TikTok started testing the addition of Google search results to its in-app search results page, essentially acting as a backlink to Google.
TikTok has also tested adding links to Wikipedia, IMDb, and other websites directly on the app’s results page.
TikTok is trying to take advantage of some of the habits that its users – especially the younger ones – have developed in the application. Many young users treat TikTok as a search engine, choosing to search for restaurant recommendations or products in the app instead of using platforms like Google Search.
And just like Google, TikTok seems to be leaning towards AI results by placing them above creator content.
