This measure comes in the context of uncertainty surrounding the future of the platform, which has faced bans due to concerns about the possible sharing of user data with the Chinese government, an accusation that ByteDance firmly denies.

On January 19, 2025, TikTok was blocked in the U.S. as a result of a law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok’s operations in the country to a U.S. company or suspend its operations.

TikTok returns to the Android and Apple app stores

Although the U.S. government had expressed concerns about data security, the reinstallation of the app suggests a shift in the authorities’ position.

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple and Google received assurances that a ban would not be implemented immediately, which may have influenced their decision to reinstate TikTok on their platforms.

Despite the good news of the reinstatement, TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains unstable. President Trump needs to negotiate a permanent agreement before April, the date when the fate of the app in the country will be determined.

Meanwhile, the scarcity of the app in app stores has led some users to sell devices with TikTok pre-installed on eBay at exorbitant prices.

It is noteworthy that, although TikTok can now be downloaded again, its permanence depends on the negotiations between the government and ByteDance. In the meantime, its users continue to use the app, hoping that this situation will be resolved without a definitive ban being imposed.

Elon Musk rules out acquiring TikTok amid legal pressures

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world and close advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump, has stated that he is not interested in acquiring TikTok’s operations in the United States. During a forum in Germany, Musk assured: “I have not made an offer for TikTok and I have no plans on what I would do if I had TikTok.” This statement comes in a context where the popular social media platform is facing new legal pressures in the U.S. that could force the separation from its Chinese owner, ByteDance, due to concerns about user data collection. This statement comes in a context where the popular social media platform is facing new legal pressures in the U.S. that could force the separation from its Chinese owner, ByteDance, due to concerns about user data collection.

Elon Musk is not interested in TikTok for these reasons

The Trump administration had paused the enforcement of the law that could have seen TikTok banned in the country just before Trump took office for his second term. Additionally, the president claimed to be open to the possible purchase of the platform by Musk. Despite this openness, Musk emphasizes that he does not plan to take the reins of TikTok, commenting that he does not use the app and is not eager to acquire it.

Taking control of Twitter, now known as X, in 2022 for 44 billion dollars, Musk has faced criticism for an increase in hate speech and misinformation on the platform, raising concerns about fostering a more toxic environment for public discourse.

Musk has also expressed his commitment to initiatives to cut the government budget, targeting agencies that do not align with Trump’s agenda.

Recently, a U.S. judge issued an emergency order preventing Musk’s government reform team from accessing personal and financial data of millions of Americans stored in the Department of the Treasury. In his comments in Germany, Musk also criticized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, calling them ‘renamed racism’, which aligns with movements in the U.S. to dismantle such programs.

On the other hand, Musk’s support for the far-right AfD party in Germany has generated controversy, adding an additional layer of complexities to his public figure in the political and social sphere.

This move comes at a time when the possible ban of TikTok in the U.S. has caused concern among creators who rely on this platform.

In this way, YouTube hopes to capitalize on this uncertainty to attract TikTok users, as its time in the United States may be coming to an end.

What is Repurpose, the app that promises to have your content everywhere

Repurpose.io offers an automated system that allows creators to easily share their TikTok and Instagram content on YouTube, simplifying a process that could otherwise be complicated and time-consuming, something content creators never have.

YouTube has started testing this feature, offering a three-month free period for creators to experiment with the tool at no cost.

Despite these benefits, there is a significant challenge: the audiences of TikTok and YouTube are notably different. While TikTok has a younger and more diverse user base, many YouTube creators present a more varied profile that might not align with the type of content TikTok users prefer.

YouTube will need to address this difference in consumers if it truly seeks to convert TikTok creators into new loyal users of its platform.

Once the free trial period is over, creators interested in maintaining their workflow through Repurpose.io will need to consider an annual cost starting at $349.

This strategy by YouTube represents a serious attempt to secure greater participation in the social media market, while navigating the uncertainty surrounding TikTok in the U.S.

TikTok Could Be Banned This Sunday: Here’s How to Keep Using the App

TikTok’s future in the United States hangs by a thread. With the ban scheduled for this Sunday, millions of users may find themselves unable to access the video platform. However, there are ways to prepare and continue enjoying TikTok even if the restrictions take effect. Let’s explore how to ensure that our creations and favorite content remain accessible.

Download TikTok and Keep the App Installed

The first step to face this situation is to download the app on all your devices and make sure not to delete it. If TikTok disappears from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, accessing it will become significantly more challenging. Meanwhile, those who already have it installed will still be able to use it, albeit with some limitations, as we’ll discuss shortly.

Additionally, make sure the app is updated to the latest version available from the App Store or Google Play Store to ensure you can enjoy the service for as long as possible.

Set Up a VPN to Bypass Restrictions

With the app installed, let’s talk about how to continue accessing the servers that power TikTok. One of the most useful tools in situations like this is a virtual private network or VPN. VPNs allow you to change the location from which you’re accessing the internet, which can be crucial if TikTok is blocked in the U.S. Setting up a VPN is easier than it might seem:

  1. Download a reliable VPN app, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or iTop VPN. It’s essential to choose a provider that ensures speed and stability.
  2. Configure the VPN to connect from a country where TikTok is still available. Options could include Canada (with good connection speeds due to geographic proximity) or any other country that hasn’t implemented similar restrictions.
  3. Activate the VPN before opening TikTok. Once connected, you can access the platform as if you were in that other country. When done, simply deactivate the VPN and continue browsing as usual.

Here’s a key point: selecting a trusted VPN service is critical. Since all your traffic will pass through the service, choose one that respects your privacy. Avoid free services, as they often finance themselves through data collection or intrusive ads, which could compromise your security.

Download Your TikTok Videos

With the steps above, you can guarantee access to the platform, but it’s a good idea to go further. Preparing for the potential ban by saving your TikTok videos ensures you’ll have them stored on your devices to watch and share anytime.

How to Download Your Videos Directly from the App

There are two ways to download TikTok videos: directly through TikTok or using third-party download services. For the first method, which lets you download all your data in one package, follow these steps:

  1. Open the TikTok app and tap your profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap the ☰ Menu button at the top, then tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Account.
  4. Tap Download your data.
  5. Select the information you want included in your file and choose a file format.
  6. Tap Request data.

Once the file is ready, you can follow the same steps to download it. Keep in mind that activity from the last 24–48 hours may not be included in this file.

If you want to download a specific video, the steps are simpler:

  1. Open TikTok and select the video you want to download.
  2. Tap the share button and choose the Save video option.
  3. The video will be saved to your device’s gallery with a watermark, ensuring you can access it even if the app becomes inaccessible.

Using Online Tools to Download Videos

If you want to download videos without the watermark or access specific content, online tools like SnapTik, SaveFrom, or SSSTikTok can help. Here are the general steps:

  1. Copy the video link from TikTok.
  2. Open the chosen tool’s website in a browser.
  3. Paste the link into the designated field and select the download option.
  4. Save the file to your device.

Keep in mind that while these tools are useful, it’s your responsibility to use them legally. Downloading content from other creators without their permission is not allowed, so focus on videos you’ve personally contributed to the platform.

Is It Legal to Keep Using TikTok? What Happens After Sunday?

Although the situation looks bleak, not all hope is lost. TikTok might reach an agreement with authorities to avoid the ban or implement strategies to mitigate its impact. In the meantime, preparing for a scenario where the app is less accessible allows you to stay ahead and protect your content.

If the ban goes through, will it be illegal to keep using TikTok? The answer is no. Even if the law takes effect, it won’t be illegal to continue using TikTok. Nor will it be unlawful to find alternative ways to download the app outside official stores, though the process might be more complicated. The law is clear: “This law will not apply to individual people accessing TikTok.”

By following these steps, you can continue using TikTok, even with certain limitations. From keeping the app installed to setting up a VPN or downloading your favorite videos as a precaution, there are solutions to adapt to this potential change. Let’s see how the situation unfolds in the meantime.

Did you know that TikTok emits more carbon than Greece? This is the brutal environmental impact of the platform

In 2023, the social network’s emissions in the United States, United Kingdom, and France reached 7.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). These figures surpass those of platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Snapchat, and place TikTok just above Instagram, although the latter has nearly twice as many users.

The environmental impact of TikTok is linked to the time its users spend on the app. While Instagram users spend an average of 30.6 minutes a day on the platform, TikTok users spend 45.5 minutes daily. “The algorithm is designed for the mass distribution of videos,” explained Alexis Normand, CEO of Greenly. This increases the individual carbon footprint as it encourages greater content consumption.

Greenly estimates that the global carbon footprint of TikTok could be around 50 million metric tons of CO2e, if global data is considered and not just that of certain countries. This is close to the annual emissions of Greece, which were 51.67 million tons in 2023. Additionally, the report notes that emissions associated with data centers account for 99% of TikTok’s footprint, excluding other sources such as offices or employee transportation.

At an individual level, TikTok users generate an average of 48.49 kg of CO2e per year, equivalent to driving 198 kilometers in a gasoline car, surpassing YouTube (164 kilometers) and Instagram (133 kilometers). However, TikTok also stands out for its lack of transparency in environmental data, as, unlike Meta or Google, it does not publish detailed reports or collaborate with carbon disclosure projects.

TikTok has committed to being carbon neutral by 2030 through initiatives like “Project Clover,” which includes a data center in Norway powered by renewable energy. However, the future of these commitments is at least uncertain due to potential changes in the company’s ownership, as ByteDance, the parent company, could be forced to sell the platform in the United States before January 19, 2025.

In an order filed on Friday, the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia deemed the granting of an injunction to stop the ban on TikTok in the United States unjustified. It considered that doing so would not only delay the execution of a judicial resolution but would completely suspend a law that was deliberately enacted by Congress and ratified as constitutional by the court.

“The petitioners have not identified any case in which a court, after rejecting a constitutional challenge against a law of Congress, has prohibited the law from taking effect while its review is sought before the Supreme Court,” the order states.

TikTok has run out of time and only a miracle can save it

The court also noted that TikTok’s request for a preliminary injunction was based on its claim that the ban violates the right to freedom of expression enshrined in the First Amendment.

In their request last Monday, TikTok argued that it was likely the Supreme Court would review the ban, as “restrictions [on freedom of] expression have survived strict scrutiny only in rare and narrow circumstances.”

Unfortunately, the Court of Appeals ruling had already rejected TikTok’s argument, the Friday order reiterating that “it unanimously concluded that the Law meets the First Amendment requirements under heightened scrutiny.”

Laws that restrict freedom of expression are subject to strict scrutiny, requiring them to be narrowly tailored to promote a compelling governmental interest. They must also be the least restrictive means to achieve the government’s objective.

TikTok has systematically denied accusations of ties with the Chinese government. The company has also publicly invested $1.5 billion to quarantine U.S. user data in the U.S. with the American company Oracle, an initiative dubbed Project Texas. Even so, U.S. lawmakers remain unconvinced.

Although Friday’s decision is an undeniable setback for TikTok, the company has reiterated its intention to appeal to the United States Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court does not rule in favor of TikTok, the only way for Americans to retain access to TikTok is for ByteDance to sell its operations in the United States.

Social media significantly affects the mental health of young people, which is why international organizations are pressuring companies like Instagram or TikTok to take proactive measures to protect their users.

In the case of TikTok, one of the measures they have decided to take is to ban beauty filters (filters that are activated in the app when the phone’s camera is turned on to conceal any imperfections on the face and artificially modify users’ faces), for teenagers.

That is to say, in the coming weeks, those under 18 will not be able to artificially enlarge their eyes, fill their lips, or change their skin tone. We must start loving ourselves as we are.

Children at the center of the debate: should young people be allowed to use TikTok?

The restrictions will apply to filters like Bold Glamour, which modify children’s features in a way that makeup cannot. However, comedic filters that add bunny ears or dog noses will not be affected.

The social media company, which has billions of users, announced the changes during a security forum held at its European headquarters in Dublin.

The effectiveness of the restrictions will depend on people using the platform with their real age, which is not always the case.

There is growing concern that beauty filters have led to pressure on teenagers, especially girls, to adopt a polished physical appearance with negative emotional repercussions. Some young people have described how after using filters they found their real face ugly.

TikTok also announced that it was strengthening its systems to block users under 13 years old from the platform, which could mean that thousands of British children are expelled from the platform. Before the end of the year, it will launch a test of new automated systems that use machine learning to detect people who bypass their age restrictions.

The measure comes at a time when stricter regulation of social media use by minors is looming in the UK, under the Online Safety Act. The platform already removes 20 million accounts worldwide each quarter for being underage.

TikTok has launched a new feature called “Share to TikTok” to more easily connect its platform with music streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify.

Now, users can directly share songs, albums, and playlists from these platforms to TikTok, posting them on their “For You” feed, in Stories, or sending them via direct message. This integration allows for smooth interaction between TikTok and music apps, enhancing the connection between users and their favorite artists and songs.

Ole Obermann, head of music business development at TikTok, explained that this tool is “the latest example of our ongoing commitment to support music discovery and artist promotion in collaboration with music streaming services.” According to Obermann, the feature “closes the loop” following the success of the previous “Add to music app” feature and will facilitate artist promotion on the platform.

With this new integration, Spotify will allow you to share music, podcasts, and audiobooks on TikTok through the Share button on the playback screen, while Apple Music offers similar options from its Share window.

Lindsey Kelt Zikry, head of global product partnerships at TikTok, highlighted that this integration “unlocks a new unlimited method of creative expression,” allowing artists, authors, and podcasters to better connect with their audiences.

The company rejects the claims about the extent of the damage caused by the anonymous individual, saying that ‘they contain some exaggerations and inaccuracies.’ In other words, they don’t want to acknowledge the extent of this sabotage, but it doesn’t seem to be a minor issue.

This comes after reports about the incident were spread over the weekend on social media, making it public in this way.

Sabotage of Doubao, China’s Most Popular AI

The generative AI model Doubao ChatGPT from the Chinese tech giant is the most popular AI chatbot in the country.

‘The individual was an intern with the [advertising] technology team and has no experience with the AI Lab,’ ByteDance said in a statement. ‘His social media profile and some media reports contain inaccuracies.’

TikTok, for its part, says that its online business operations, including its large linguistic AI models, were not affected by the intern’s actions, the company added.

ByteDance also denied reports that the incident caused damages worth more than 10 million dollars by disrupting an AI training system composed of thousands of powerful graphics processing units (GPU).

In addition to dismissing the person in August, ByteDance said it had reported the incident to the intern’s university and industry organizations. ByteDance operates some of the world’s most popular social media apps, such as TikTok and its Chinese equivalent Douyin.

Like many of its counterparts in China and around the world, the social media giant is heavily investing in AI. It uses the technology to power its Doubao chatbot, as well as many other applications, including a text-to-video tool called Jimeng.
