Let’s not deny it: we’re all waiting to see what Nintendo has to say. But not about the upcoming games for Switch (unless ‘Metroid Prime 4’ makes a surprise appearance many years after its teaser). We’re talking about the highly anticipated Switch 2. The Japanese company knows perfectly well that we’re aware that the final stretch of their current console has already arrived, that they’re devoting most of their assets to the next one, and that this Direct, when we see the presentation of this next-gen Nintendo-family console, is going to break the Internet.
Neither console nor console
Even with the mere announcement of the new Nintendo Direct, which we’ll see starting at 4:00 pm, Nintendo wanted to provide some reassurance by making it clear that there will be no news about “the successor to Switch”. It should be noted that Nintendo delivers on its promises, and for 40 minutes, the Direct presentation will focus exclusively on what’s coming from now until the end of 2024.
This means that, for example, ‘Pokémon Legends: Z-A’ will be excluded from this showcase of games that, for the most part, we’re already familiar with. We can predictably expect to see ‘Star Wars: Hunters’, the new ‘Super Monkey Ball’, the remake of ‘Luigi’s Mansion 2’ and ‘LEGO Horizon Adventures’ (with the distant hope that Samus Aran surprises us), and to find out the release date of ‘Epic Mickey 2’.
Yes, Nintendo has prepared a very interesting homecoming celebration for Switch, which shows that even in its old age it’s still very much alive. Yet still our body craves ‘Zelda’, ‘Mario Kart’, ‘Pokémon’, and the rest of the mythical franchises that they’re consciously keeping in their pocket for the next Nintendo Direct. And, why not admit it, a small part of us still hopes that in the end there’ll be “one more thing” and that we can then get a glimpse of the new console. Hey, you can survive off hope, right?
