Marine Corps today: Why Marines use Hueys and Cobras, not Apaches or Black Hawks

The Marine Corps flies the AH-1Z Viper, UH-1Y Venom, and CH-53K King Stallion for expeditionary, ship-based work, not the Army’s AH-64 Apache or UH-60 Black Hawk. The reason is pretty straightforward: Marine aviation has to operate from ships and rough, austere sites, so it leans toward helicopters built for naval use.

That changes the requirements. Marines need corrosion protection, folding rotors, reinforced landing gear, and dimensions that work on crowded flight decks. That’s why the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom make more sense in this role than the AH-64 Apache and UH-60 Black Hawk. The AH-1Z Viper is often listed at 255 mph, compared with 182 mph for the AH-64 Apache, while the UH-1Y Venom covers transport, command and control, escort, and resupply. There’s also a logistics upside: the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom share about 85% of their parts, which cuts maintenance, training, and support demands.

The same logic applies on the heavy-lift side. The CH-53K King Stallion fits Marine missions better than an Army CH-47 Chinook because it can haul a 36,000-pound external load and includes automated rotor and tail folding for shipboard service.

The roadmap is laid out in Force Design 2030 and the U.S. Marine Corps 2026 Aviation Plan. In those documents, the Corps says it’s replacing the CH-53E with 200 CH-53Ks and upgrading the H-1 fleet through SPINE for more power, longer service life, better connectivity, weapons integration, survivability, F-35 data sharing, and manned-unmanned teaming.

GTA VI extended look already tops Netflix: 31.1 million views

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, Rockstar Games’ 27-minute preview of Grand Theft Auto VI, ended up as Netflix’s most-watched title worldwide. According to Netflix’s weekly Top 10 data, it pulled in 31.1 million views from August 27 to 30 and finished the week of August 24-30, 2026 at No. 1 on the service.

Netflix had Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look to itself for only six hours before Rockstar Games posted the preview on YouTube. Even with that short exclusive window, it still ranked first in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks. Reports also linked the debut to a brief Netflix outage, a 35% spike in concurrent usage, and a 24% jump in app downloads.

The business side looks just as big. Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders reportedly climbed 572% compared with the previous 30-day average, and M Science estimated that the bump added a few hundred thousand new orders worldwide.

The video includes new cutscenes, combat, and gameplay for Jason and Lucia in Vice City. If you’ve been following Grand Theft Auto VI, this is probably one to watch, since it gives the clearest look yet at the game before its November 19, 2026 launch.

You can watch Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on Netflix or YouTube, while Grand Theft Auto VI is headed to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The release also adds another chapter to the growing partnership between Netflix and Rockstar Games, especially after Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition joined Netflix’s mobile catalog.

The Blood of Dawnwalker on Xbox: New Zealand trick could unlock it early

Rebel Wolves’ The Blood of Dawnwalker arrives worldwide on September 3, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

If you’re trying to get in a little early, the New Zealand trick is really an Xbox thing. It only works when a game unlocks at 12:00 a.m. local time, in each region, and The Blood of Dawnwalker is expected to use that staggered console rollout on Xbox. So if you switch your system region to New Zealand, there’s a decent chance you’ll get access several hours ahead of schedule. PC is different. Bandai Namco is going with a single global launch there, which means changing your location settings probably won’t do anything.

Xbox Download

Pre-load opened 48 hours before release, which is why countdowns, launch maps, and the usual last-minute “does this still work?” posts are everywhere right now. If you’re on Xbox, already pre-loaded, and trying to squeeze out every extra hour you can before the standard release hits, this is something to sort out before launch. Just keep the tradeoff in mind: changing your console region is generally treated as a breach of platform terms of service, even if there isn’t any widely reported track record of Microsoft banning people for doing it.

Reviews have started strong, too, with critics calling out the narrative, combat, and world-building in Rebel Wolves’ first game.

Shopify Q2 2026: its shopping agents are already paying off

Shopify’s Q2 2026 results were strong: revenue rose 34% to $3.58 billion, and gross merchandise volume, or GMV, climbed 32% to $115.6 billion. The company says its push into automated commerce is already showing up in the numbers.

Shopify Download

It’s also making a bigger claim. Shopify wants to be the infrastructure behind agentic shopping, and Hertz said traffic and orders coming from shopping agents tripled over the past year as more shopping shifts into chatbots and assistants. Headcount has stayed flat for more than two years, so Shopify’s argument is pretty direct: better internal tools raise productivity, and better merchant tools make sellers easier to find and buy from. Investors seem to like that line in a market that’s still cautious about expensive bets.

Shopify also said searches powered by structured Catalog data converted at twice the rate of scraped data. About 75% of agent-attributed orders came from outside the top 100 categories, which hints at the same thing: cleaner data gives agents a better shot at surfacing niche products.

If you sell on Shopify, or just keep an eye on e-commerce infrastructure, there’s something here to watch. Analysts see agentic commerce as a real growth opening, and Shopify says it’s building UCP with Google so agents can handle discovery and checkout beyond Shopify’s storefront tools. Some merchants, though, still say automated support can make an actual human hard to reach.

The full report is on Shopify’s investor site.

2026 horror movies worth watching: Obsession, Backrooms and more

Horror had a big 2026. There wasn’t just one breakout hit either. Original chillers, internet-spawned nightmares, and franchise follow-ups all hit, and the genre stayed one of the most lively parts of the box office.

Netflix Download

Obsession still looms over the year. Made for about $750,000, it turned into a real phenomenon and pulled in more than $500 million worldwide. But there was more going on than the obvious juggernaut. Backrooms, drawn from creepypasta and YouTube lore, turned online unease into something fully mainstream and finished with more than $394 million globally.

Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple made less money, but it ended up as one of the most admired horror movies of 2026. As the fourth film in the franchise, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple pushed the series outward through cruelty, hope, care, and compassion. Sam Raimi’s Send Help won critics with its survival-horror tension, streak of dark humor, and strong lead cast. Adam Scott’s Hokum gave the year another well-reviewed supernatural entry.

If you needed proof that horror doesn’t have to pick between new ideas and familiar names, 2026 had plenty of it. Originals like Obsession and Backrooms thrived right alongside Scream 7 and Insidious: Out of the Further. You can catch the 2026 horror lineup in theaters and on the major digital platforms.

Google launches Android Digital Credential Alliance: wider digital ID support

Google said today that it’s launching the Android Digital Credential Alliance, an expansion of its 2021 Android Ready SE program meant to make digital IDs, including driver’s licenses and national ID cards, work more securely across Android devices and services.

The group goes past chip makers. Google says it also brings in phone manufacturers, wallet developers, and government agencies, all aiming at a shared standard for issuing, storing, and verifying credentials. On supported phones, Android Strongbox keeps that data in a protected area and only releases it after you authenticate with a fingerprint, face unlock, or PIN.

Google says this is the same security model already used by Google Wallet, and it pointed to that setup as a reference for the European Digital Identity Wallet expected by the end of 2026. Mobile driver’s licenses are already expanding into more U.S. states and some TSA PreCheck checkpoints, Google says, though you’ll still need a physical ID as backup.

If broader digital ID support on Android matters to you, this is one to watch. The American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation are still warning about surveillance, tracking, function creep, malware, and weak implementations.

You won’t download the alliance itself, but you’ll see its work show up across Android devices, Google Wallet, and the digital ID services that follow.

Google Maps for Android Auto beta hints at a darker map

Google Maps on Android Auto looks to have picked up a visual tweak in Android Auto beta 17.6.663424 on Android. The map itself appears darker now, which should feel a lot less harsh on those bright in-car screens.

Google Maps Download

What people are seeing so far in beta 17.6.663424 points to a deeper background and toned-down accents in both light and dark mode, so the whole interface may stay more subdued no matter which one you’re using. Reports from the beta also say the turn indicator drops the brighter teal in favor of a darker gray. In practice, that could cut glare, reduce reflections, and make nighttime driving easier on the eyes, especially on bigger dashboard displays. It could also help in those moments when Android Auto bugs out and leaves Google Maps stuck in bright day mode even after the sun’s gone down.

If you use Google Maps in the car all the time, this is one to keep an eye on. The late-2023 color redesign got a pretty mixed response, and this looks like Google adjusting again, even if quietly. Still, Google hasn’t said anything publicly, there’s no timeline for a wider rollout, and nobody knows yet how easy the new colors will be to read at a glance, or how they’ll work for people with color vision deficiencies.

Right now, it’s only showing up in Android Auto beta 17.6.663424 on Android.

Apple’s new CEO introduces himself to his employees like this

John Ternus is now officially Apple’s new CEO and, after Tim Cook’s handover, he wanted to speak directly to the company’s employees. After 25 years in Cupertino, John is beginning his new chapter with a brief but comprehensive memo and with a message that both employees and users will no doubt resonate with.

iTunes Download

A first message focused on Tim Cook and on the team

Ternus devotes much of his message to thanking Tim Cook for everything he’s shared with him over the years, as well as his knowledge and experience during the transition, and everything he has contributed to the company.

Ternus speaks of Apple as “the best company in the world” and comments on what lies ahead. He especially mentions an “enormous launch” planned for next week and thanks the team for all the work over the past few months to make it possible.

We already saw it in Tim Cook’s farewell memo, and now we see it again with Ternus: the value of the teams at Apple comes first.

A transition focused squarely on the future

After the thanks, Ternus talks about the products Apple is already developing and those yet to be imagined, and about how the team will create them together. His growing public presence, which we’ve seen in his recent appearances at Apple Park and in many keynotes, shouldn’t distract us from the fact that John is, above all, someone with long experience in creating new products.

With Tim Cook as executive chairman and Ternus taking over the day-to-day as a brilliant hardware engineer, Apple is entering a very interesting new chapter, and it’s doing so while maintaining strong continuity. The first message from its new CEO makes it clear where the focus is: people and products, present and future.

The full memo, as reported by 9to5Mac, is as follows:

Team:

Today, on my first day as CEO, I wanted to send you a brief note to thank you all for the warm congratulations. I also want to express my deep gratitude to Tim for passing on so much of his knowledge and experience to me during this transition and, even more importantly, for everything he has contributed to Apple over these years. We’ve been enormously fortunate to have a CEO who has led with his values at the core and with such decency and humanity. We’re all better because of it, and I’m deeply grateful that he’ll be our executive chairman.

It’s an honor to take on this role at what truly is the best company in the world, and I’m tremendously excited about everything we have prepared. Next week we have a major launch that is going to be phenomenal. Thank you for everything you’ve done to make it possible.

I’m just as excited about everything that will come after that, including the incredible products already in development and those still to be imagined, which we’ll dream up and create together. There’s no better team in the world with whom I’d want to build the future.

More to come. In the meantime, thank you for your excellent work!

John

Anthropic launches Claude Fable 5.1: smarter, faster, and much cheaper

Anthropic has unveiled Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1. Three months after the launch of Fable 5, the company describes both as its most advanced models for programming and knowledge work. The combination of better performance, greater intelligence, and a lower price is, without a doubt, especially interesting.

Better coding and debugging

Fable 5.1 surpasses, of course, Fable 5 and Opus 5, but also GPT-5.6 Sol, in several key benchmarks. According to Anthropic, it’s designed for long-running tasks, where agents become much more important, and it arrives after the return of Claude Fable 5 and while the company continues to make Mythos available, the same model but with fewer safety restrictions, only for certain trusted companies.

Anthropic explains that Fable 5.1 is designed to find the root causes of errors, so we can expect better results in projects that require highly precise code over long stretches of work.

Much cheaper for the most demanding tasks

The base price stays the same, but Anthropic has decided to lower the price of cache reads. The company estimates that the total cost can drop by 25% in the most common workloads and fall by around 45% in the most demanding agentic jobs.

The update arrives with the existing safeguards, although more visible and with the invisible watermark for Claude’s text outputs.

Mistborn Handbook gets a release date: Brotherwise sets November 4, 2026

Brotherwise Games has November 4, 2026 penciled in for November 4, 2026. The book is a 405-page core rulebook for the Cosmere Roleplaying Game, with character creation for both players and Game Masters, full campaign tools, and Scadrial material covering Mistborn Eras 1 and 2. A few retailer listings still have it down for November 16 , so that date hasn’t fully settled everywhere yet.

Brotherwise says the system should be easy to get into if you’re new to tabletop RPGs, but not stripped down for longtime players. The pitch is narrative decision-making, heroic paths built around the setting, and, from the early numbers, a Mistborn Handbook that may even come in larger than the current Stormlight handbook.

There’s more coming with it. The broader release also includes a World Guide, the 265-page Mistborn: Legacy Adventure, a starter set, custom dice, and item decks.

And if you keep up with Sanderson’s worlds outside the novels, this Mistborn wave looks especially tempting. Lead writer Meric Moir says the new lore is canon per Dragonsteel. Mistborn: Legacy Adventure is being described as a secret story set inside the timeline. Brandon Sanderson has also said he’s finished a first draft of a Mistborn Apple TV movie screenplay, The Fires of December is due in December 2026, and Mistborn: Ghostbloods is still aiming for 2028.

You should be able to pick up the hardcover through Brotherwise Games and tabletop retailers in November 2026.
