[Gamescom 2013] Call of Duty Ghosts: a first look at multiplayer

After trying out a few campaign missions in Call of Duty: Ghosts at E3, we were finally able to try out multiplayer at Gamescom 2013, specifically the PS4 version. Design your soldier

In Call of Duty: Ghosts, customization options let you personalize your soldier and create 20,000 different combinations. This means you won’t see two soldiers the same in the multiplayer mode. Even better, it now includes women, a great new feature which will please many female CoD players.

Obviously, customizing your soldier isn’t just about aesthetics, you can also choose your weapons. Among the options you’ll find marksman rifles, IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), canister bombs (you throw them and they explode after a few seconds) or various types of grenades.

Perks – it’s all about the points

Customizing your soldier is great, but one aspect that’s always important for Call of Duty fans is the perks system. Ghosts debuts a new one, this time based on points.

You start with 8 points, which can increase up to 11 if you get rid of your secondary weapons. With these points you can buy perks, the cheapest of which cost one point and the most expensive, five. With this system you can set your number of perks to your liking; strengthening the skills you’re good at, or making improvements that make you indispensable. One of these is our highly-anticipated new best friend. Yes, even your faithful dog gets into multiplayer as a perk.

This new system aims to revolutionize the franchise and establish itself as a new model that other games will surely copy. Do you like this new system of perks or do you prefer what we’ve seen in CoD Black Ops 2 and other games in the Call of Duty series?

Squads: a mode that goes beyond multiplayer

Call of Duty Ghosts lets  you create your own squad of up to 10 soldiers. They will gain combat experience and, even better, there are no limits on their use.

With the new Squads mode you can take your elite soldiers and put them into combat in any game mode: alone against the AI ​​and cooperatively or competitively against your friends or any other CoD user.

Like the new perks, the Squads mode is also meant to be a turning point in the series, as it combines the best of the classic multiplayer modes with much more advanced AI. When we say AI, we’re talking about the AI of your fellow soldiers, who act in a much more logically than before: they can shoot while they’re jumping, they offer better coverage and act accordingly to the weapons they’re equipped with.

Within the Squad submodes you’ll find Squad vs Squad, where you pit your squad against a friend’s squad;  Wargame, where your squad faces another AI squad or Safeguard, a mode inspired by Modern Warfare 3’s Survival mode.

New modes for the classic player

If your idea of multiplayer is more traditional, you’ll be pleased to know that some new modes have been debuted in Call of Duty: Ghosts and we were able to test them at the Gamescom demo.

The first mode we tried was Search and Rescue. In this mode, similar to Kill Confirmed for Black Ops 2, when you die you drop your badge: if a teammate picks it up you keep playing, but if your opponent does, you’ll be dead until the next round begins.

We also tried Blitz, an interesting twist on the classic Capture the Flag. This time the action focuses on points of the map where you generate battles for control of the territory. These battles allow you to enter enemy territory and score a point, while your opponents return to the starting point … It’ll take a few seconds, just enough to regroup, and then another battle begins. When the time runs out, whoever has the most points, wins. In reality, Blitz is just a variation on what we’ve seen hundreds of times in other games, but we appreciate Infinity Ward’s attempt to revitalize it.

The third mode we saw was Cracked, which takes the basic themes of the classic Team Deathmatch but with a twist: when you kill an enemy you have 30 seconds to eliminate another. If you fail, you explode and are blown to bits!

CoD 24/7

It seems that the future of the FPS is going social. We saw this in the new Killzone for PS4, and now we’ve seen it in Call of Duty: Ghosts. Activision’s slogan – COD, Anywhere – seems pretty spot on. The developers want you to be connected to your game at all times and to share your achievements with the community.

To this end, we have the CoD profile, which allows you to store your multiplayer game data in the cloud and access it from any console. Furthermore, with the new smartphone app you can check your stats, connect with other fans and, more importantly, use it as a second screen for your Ghosts games.

When it comes to connectivity, Activision also talked about clan wars, a game in parallel with the general multiplayer.

¿Is CoD better in multiplayer?

We warned you at E3 that for all the spectacular features and new friends that have been added, the single player mode of Call of Duty: Ghosts left us unimpressed.

So what did we make of multiplayer? Well, revolution is probably pushing it, but at the very least the new modes, the Squads function and the new Perks system have convinced us.

Google Play basics Part 5: Send apps to your Android device from a PC

The Google Play Store allows you to send an app or game directly from your computer to your Android device. This can be really useful, especially if you find an interesting app when you’re browsing on your computer. Forget about reaching for your phone, opening the Google Play Store and searching for the app.

In this final installment in our Google Play Basics series, we’ll teach you how to send those apps directly from your computer to your Android device.

1. Download from Softonic

Click the ‘Download’ button under the name of the selected game or app in Softonic. We use Mini Golf MatchUp in the example below. This step takes you to the Google Play store. If you’re already at the Play Store, you can skip this step.

2. Log into Google Play

Sign in to your Google Account on the Play Store. Click the Sign In button in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Note: In order to send apps to your phone or tablet, you need to log in to Google Play on your device too. If you haven’t done that yet, do it now so that you won’t have to repeat this step every time.

3. Click Install

On the app page, right next to the icon, click the green ‘Install’ button.

4. Select the device on which you want to install the app

If you have more than one Android device, like a smartphone and a tablet, choose the one that you want to install the app on. Select it from the list at the bottom of the window that pops up, and then click ‘Install’.

5. Wait until the app downloads and installs

Double check that the Wi-Fi on your phone or tablet is turned on and is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Otherwise, the app won’t install on your device.

And that’s it! Check your Android phone or tablet and see if the application has been retrieved and installed.

Google Play Basics part 4: How to fix server error RPC:S-5:AEC-0

Google Play is a fantastic store for getting apps and games for your Android device, but it’s less than fantastic when something suddenly goes wrong and you get an error message saying ‘Error retrieving information from server [RCP:S-5:AEC-0]’.

What can you do to fix this error? It’s a system error that can be fixed with one simple and effective method: you have to remove your Google account on your phone or tablet and then re-add it. Here’s the our-step by-step guide on how to do that in part 4 of our Google Play Basics series.

1. Go into your Google Account settings

Go to Settings, scroll down until you find the blue G icon (for Google), and click on it. Now select the Google account you want to delete. On our test phone, we added 3 accounts, but usually there’s only one, so click on whichever account is yours. Click on it.

2. Remove your Google Account

Click on the icon with three dots in the upper right hand corner of the screen. You’ll get a menu where one of the options will be to ‘Remove Account.’ Confirm that you really want to remove the account.

3. Re-add the Google Account

Enter Google Play and click on Add a Google Account to re-add the account onto your phone or tablet. Remember, the account hasn’t been deleted completely, just removed off of your device. In this case, click ‘Existing’ instead of ‘New’ account.

The RPC: S-5: AEC-0 error should now no longer pop up. Enter Google Play and download a new apps or game just to double check.

WeChat is a new and completely free messaging app currently trumping well known competitors WhatsApp, Viber and LINE with some of its awesome and unique features. We give you a breakdown of what the messaging app can do so that you can decide for yourself if you want to make the switch.

What is WeChat?

WeChat is an instant messaging app for Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Symbian and Java. Perhaps the reason behind it’s recent success is the company’s huge advertising campaign featuring superstar Leo Messi, but this app has its own merits without needing the help of the famous footballer. Aside from all the functions we’re used to, like creating group chats, sending photos, music files, and voice notes, WeChat introduces some functions never before seen in similar messaging apps.

1. Enrich your chats with colored stickers

WeChat integrates two of the best parts of WhatsApp and LINE: when you’re chatting, you can insert both emoticons and stickers, all for free!

2. Create a live chat

All it takes is a few taps to start a group conversation and live voice chat. It’s a type of multi-user walkie-talkie which makes conversations more immediate and fun, although only one person can speak at a time when the indicator light is green.

3. Make a video call

With video call mode, you can talk face-to-face with your friends. During the call, you can choose to toggle between video and audio. This feature makes WeChat a potential competitor for Skype, which has been the undisputed king of VoIP calls up until now.

4. Meet new people online

With the ‘Shake’ feature, you literally shake your device and find other people around you doing the same thing. In the results list, you can then select a contact that intrigues you and send a chat message to get to know them, a feature that reminds us a lot of Chatroulette.

5. Chat using your computer

Although there are several tricks to using WhatsApp on your PC, an official PC version was never actually released. Too bad for WhatsApp, because WeChat hasn’t let this opportunity slip through their fingers, having implemented a version for chatting directly in your browser.

6. Share ‘Moments’ with Facebook

The ‘Moments’ function in WeChat is similar to Facebook posts but more focused on photos. In fact, sharing ‘Moments’ on Facebook is easy thanks to Facebook integration. All you have to do is snap a photo, add a comment (if you want), and hit send. Just make sure you connect WeChat with your Facebook account.

7. Built-in photo editing

Do you want to edit your photos to be published on social networks? Or maybe you want to add a filter to your profile picture on WeChat? This is all possible in WeChat without using external applications! The app has integrated photo editing, allowing you to edit photos with a whole host of different filters.

Google Play Basics part 3: Recover your forgotten password

So you’ve created your account in Google Play to download games and applications for Android. Maybe you’ve even used our guide to help you register with Google Play. But what do you do when you forget your password and can’t log in and download any games or apps? In this article in our Google Play Basics series, we’ll help you recover your forgotten Google Play password.

1. I can’t sign into the Google Play Store

Is the picture below familiar? What to do next? Attempting to copy and paste or, even worse, manually rewrite the specified page URL into the browser, may seem too daunting a task. Luckily, there is a simpler way.

2. Go back to the login screen

Click the Back button in the lower left corner of the screen to take you back to the login page . Once here, click on the icon with the three dots in the upper right hand corner. You will be given the option to log in using your browser. Click this option.

3. Recover the password in the traditional way

Below, you’ll see the window showing the traditional login to your Gmail or other Google services. Click on ‘Can’t log into your account?’ and choose why, then follow the instructions displayed on the screen to recover your password.

Accessible applications – Episode 1: Windows

What are accessible applications?

Accessible applications are programs that allow people with disabilities to use the computer, or to perform, via a PC or a smartphone, tasks that are usually impossible, or at least very difficult.

In recent years, a large number of programs have been created to help those who are blind, visually impaired, deaf or color blind, as well as people with physical and cognitive problems, and speech and language difficulties, making their lives a bit easier.

All platforms offer accessible programs, some by default with the operating system (such as VoiceOver for OS X) and others through third party software. In this article, we explore the options available on Windows.

CameraMouse – Lets you use your head as the mouse. This app leverages your computer’s webcam and allows you to move the cursor without using your hands. When you’re configuring Camera Mouse, you choose part of your face as the reference point for the app – in other words, the point that the CameraMouse will use to follow your movements around.

The configuration options allow you to customize many parameters. This means that the program can be adapted to most needs. For example, you can determine the motion sensitivity level, so the application can be used even in the case of very low head mobility. It can even click when the cursor hasn’t moved for a few seconds. CameraMouse isn’t always precise, but our test results were positive overall.

eViacam – Lets you use head movements to move the mouse. In some ways, it’s Similar to CameraMouse, but it’s got a few more options, such as the ability to use the virtual keyboard in Windows to write.

Thanks to a bar at the top of the screen, you can determine what action to take when you stop on a point on the screen: single click, double click or drag.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking – Lets you control the PC and write using your voice. The initial setup requires a little patience, because you’ll need to read a variety of texts to teach the program to properly recognize your voice and speech patterns.

You can choose either quick or in-depth training. The second takes more time, but we think it’s the better option. The effectiveness of the speech recognition improves over time, because Dragon NaturallySpeaking learns from its mistakes. To use the program you need a microphone, and preferably a good quality one.

We were amazed by the performance of this application, which rarely gets it wrong. It also supports multiple user profiles.

NVDA – Reads the text under the mouse – or highlighted using the keyboard – out loud. It is also compatible with touch-screen devices. The acronym stands for Non Visual Desktop Access, and it’s an open-source application created for the blind and visually impaired.

It works with most browsers and with many popular Office programs, including Word and Outlook. The program also automatically reads the system alerts that appear on the screen. NVDA works in lots of languages​​ and also offers a translator and Braille reader. Once you learn to use it, it works well, although it doesn’t guarantee you full access to all functions of your PC.

Language Reader – This program also reads texts, but it is for the visually impaired. Unlike NVDA, however, it doesn’t read what you point the mouse at, but only what you paste or write in the application editor, so a blind person cannot use this tool independently.

You have four “voice assistants”: Merlin the Magician, Aladdin, Peedy the Parrot and little Robby the Robot. They all have computerized voices, but they’re very easy to understand.

WinBraille Free – Translates and prints Braille texts from DOC, DOCX, and PDF files. It supports more than 40 languages​​, and can be used when a Braille printer is already configured.

The application also automatically adds WinBraille to the Windows default printer and a button on the Word and Excel toolbars to “translate” the text into the code used for printing in relief.

Visolve Deflector – Intensifies or changes image colors to help people who are colorblind. By applying a filter, it facilitates visualization and navigation for those who can’t properly distinguish between certain colors.

This app works with all images and texts. The control panel has lots of features, and allows customizations of every conceivable detail. This allows you to balance any type of color blindness with targeted interventions. Unfortunately, the interface isn’t very responsive.

Responding Heads – Give voice commands to your PC. Your assistant’s name is Sam, and he waits for your commands in the corner of the screen.

You can tell him to open programs or folders, write standard texts that you configure, run scripts, read texts and more. For those with disabilities, it can be a decent help, but won’t work with languages other than English.

Stronghold Crusader II: Like a castle in the sand

Stronghold Crusader 2 is the sequel to the 2002 real-time strategy game. The player has to build a fortress, protect it from attacking armies and destroy the enemy base. You can play solo against the computer, take on human opponents, or ally yourself with friends against the computer. Softonic got a first look at an early preview version at Gamescom 2013.

Stronghold Crusader 2 is much like many other economic strategy games: the player sets up his camp, gathers resources, and builds increasingly better buildings in the middle of the desert. Ultimately, the idea is to destroy the enemy’s settlements with an army.

The difference between it and many similar strategy games is the missing fantasy element. There’s no magic, no priests, no dragons, witches, or the like. The game environment is kept as faithful to the Middle Ages as possible and is limited to weapons, troops, and buildings that actually existed at the time.

“Like Stronghold Crusader, only better”

In a meeting with Softonic, producer Paul Harris emphasized that at its core, Stronghold Crusader 2 is the same game that Stronghold Crusader always was. It has been updated to match today’s technical standards and will be getting new units with improved game balance.

One of the innovations is ground troops that no longer scrape at enemy fortifications with weapons, such as swords or arrows, but grab pickaxes and break down walls piece by piece.

Powerful weapons have been added, like an arrow catapult that causes a gigantic storm of arrows to rain down on the enemy. In the preview, this weapon was still much too powerful. Only one shot broke through a dense enemy line. We were assured that the destructive force will be adjusted by the release date.

The new units will include a camouflaged saboteur who uses a grapple to scale over enemy walls unseen and opens the stronghold’s gate from inside – a huge tactical advantage for a charging army.

Measured game balance for attack and defense

Moreover, there is a suitable counterpart for every offensive unit. In its predecessor, mounted archers in the enemy camp incurred devastating damage because there was hardly any unit that could keep up with them. That type of imbalance is not supposed to be repeated in Stronghold Crusader 2. To ensure that it doesn’t, there is a mounted unit with burst speed that can cover a lot of distance very quickly – but not for long – and intercept fast attackers.

Stronghold Crusader 2 strategists are well-advised to have appropriate defenders ready in the background to act as counterweights to the offensive units.

Skirmish mode

Besides the offline campaign, castle lords can take on up to seven other players in skirmish mode. They can be bots controlled by the game, human competitors, or allies. Bots have their own characteristics. Some act more aggressively, others ensure active commerce and supply resources.

The player can take advantage of the strengths and weaknesses of Bots and seek out strong allies for waging war or trading partners through diplomacy. Computer opponents pursue their own goals and should also be able to doublecross the player.

Honors for the successful stronghold builder

The skirmish mode doesn’t support local network multiplayer, but runs exclusively online via Steam. You can also connect with other players using Steam and collect Steam achievements.

No-frills 3D graphics

The biggest difference between Stronghold Crusader and its predecessor is the 3D view. The camera can be rotated, and zooms in and out of the action. Weather effects leave visible damage on your side. With their rotating winds, tornadoes quickly transform entire rows of buildings into heaps of rubble.

In spite of the 3D graphics, you build new rows of buildings or walls in eight directions via a grid. A continuously rotating camera perspective isn’t planned. On the other hand, you can connect walls to natural barriers, such as mountains.

The figures still seem somewhat crude. The buildings – at least as they are shown in the preview version – also can’t hold a candle to currently popular strategy games like Company of Heroes or Command & Conquer in terms of wealth of detail.

Outlook: Strategy game with a rich tradition for fans of castles and the Middle Ages

Stronghold Crusader 2 doesn’t reinvent the strategy game, but serves the loyal Crusader fan base well with a game that borrows much from its predecessor. Cautiously updated elements combined with the new units in familiar surroundings promise many hours of gaming enjoyment. The skirmish mode in particular should be counted as one of them.

The graphics appear to be somewhat rough. The scope of the functions hasn’t increased. It is precisely this omission that is a tribute to game veterans and rewards the predecessor’s core players with a pure strategy game that takes place in the Middle Ages as usual, and stays true to that environment.

Stronghold Crusader 2 is tentatively scheduled for release in March 2014, provided the developers give the go-ahead.

Google Play Basics Part 2: How to register with Google Play

Whether you’re new to smartphones or just making the switch to Android, this is part 2 in our Google Play Basics series for new Android users, meant to answer some of the most basic questions you might be afraid to ask. This time, we take you through registering for Google Play.

1. Opening the the Google Play app

Find the shopping bag icon on the screen and the Play logo. The icon should say Play Store.

2. Adding a new Google Account

Click the icon with three dots in the upper right hand corner of the screen, and then click on Settings> Account> Add Account. If you don’t have a Google account (or if you don’t have Gmail or a blog on Blogger), opt for creating a new account by clicking on ‘New’. If you want to register with a Gmail account that you already have, click ‘Existing’.

3. Using your Google account to log into Google services

Once you’ve created a Google Account, you can use it to log into all Google services. Registration on Google Play requires the creation of a Google account, which also creates a mailbox in Gmail. You don’t have to use the Gmail service, but you do get a mailbox when you create the account. Just remember, you will need this email account to log in and out of Google services, so make sure that the email and password are memorable. There is a password recovery option in case you forget.

4. Adding credit card info

Adding credit card info isn’t necessary, and it might even be smart not to if you want to avoid charges, but it might be a good idea if you plan on buying a lot of apps and want to make the process a bit quicker. The Google server is secure so you don’t have to worry too much about inputting your credit card info.

And that’s it! You’ve created an account in the Play Store where you can now download games and applications for Android phones and tablets.

Some of the sites from which you can unsubscribe using JustDelete.me are Ask.fm, Amazon, Dropbox, eBay, Foursquare, iTunes/Apple ID and PayPal. The list is extensive, and growing.

The interface is clear, and the sites from which you can unsubscribe are listed in alphabetical order. To locate what you’re interested in, you can also use the search engine.

The level of difficulty of the unsubscribe process for each site is marked with a color ranging from green (easy) to yellow (medium) to red (difficult) and, finally, to black (impossible).

For each service, there’s a direct link to the log-in page and that’s always the first step required to unsubscribe.

Clicking Show information displays the relevant instructions.

To choose the language, just click on the flag in the upper left and select your preferred language.
