Some days are grumpier than others…

A post shared by Grumpy Cat (@realgrumpycat) on May 17, 2019 at 2:01am PDT

Grumpy Cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, made her first viral appearances in 2012 when she was still a kitten. Since then, Grumpy Cat has been in ads for pet food brands, ads for breakfast cereals, and even her own Lifetime Christmas movie:

When she first hit the internet, disbelievers were convinced that the pictures of her were Photoshopped. When more memes and videos hit the scene, we were all convinced.

We’re going to miss you Grumpy Cat. This one goes out to you. Thank you for the laughs:

Affordable pet insurance for 2019

Keep your pets safe this year. Here are the best insurance plans for your furry friends.

The moment you get home with your new pet, you’re responsible for making sure they stay healthy. That’s why pet insurance is such an important idea. Pet insurance should offer coverage that meets your dog or cat’s healthcare needs — general care, plus high enough limits to provide a cushion in case of a medical emergency.

Pet insurance can lower the costs associated with visits to the vet, just like health insurance does for humans. But, there are a lot of bad deals out there, which have led many pet owners to skip out on insurance altogether.

Below, we’ll look at some of the best affordable options for keeping your pet healthy in 2019 and beyond. Let’s have a look, shall we?

Best affordable pet insurance for 2019

Trupanion

trupanion pet insurance

Trupanion offers complete medical coverage with no annual limits on payouts. It’s also one of the few pet insurance providers that pays vets directly. This is a pretty big deal, as many providers require that you submit a claim for reimbursement after paying fees upfront.

The Trupanion website lays out some pretty solid benefits right off the bat. Most notably, the company offers 90% coverage of all eligible costs; including hereditary and congenital conditions.

Policyholders can visit any veterinarian in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or Canada, and they promise to never raise your rate — even if your pet requires a whole bunch of visits to the doctor.

Overall, it’s clear from the testimonials and the 5-star Trustpilot rating that Trupanion is a great option for pet owners seeking the most bang for their buck.

Healthy Paws

healthy paws insurance

Healthy Paws is another favorite plan — it’s got great reviews across the web and is one of the lowest cost options out there. Customers have raved about the services provided, and the short 15-day waiting period for injury and illness coverage.

The only caveat is, Healthy Paws is best for younger pets. Pets older than six will receive fewer, less generous benefits than their younger counterparts, and if you have a large dog, the company requires a 12-month waiting period on hip dysplasia, a condition that affects large dogs as they age.

Hip dysplasia is treated with pain medication in many cases, however, severe cases may require surgery which can get expensive, topping $7,000 in many cases.

That said, if you have a smaller, younger pet, Healthy Paws is a solid option.

Figo

figo pet insurance

We like Figo, as the insurance company comes with some distinct advantages over some of the other plans we’ve reviewed. Figo provides a cloud-based record keeping system called Pet Cloud. Not only can you quickly access records, but you can also track microchipped pets — a real lifesaver in the event that your pet runs away.

Figo offers three tiers of health coverage, all of which include comprehensive protections. Plans range from $10,000 to $14,000 in coverage in a given year, or you can choose an unlimited plan for a higher premium.

Figo’s coverage means the company pays vet exam fees when the exam is related to a specific accident or illness. So in the event that your pet gets bit by another animal or breaks a bone, you won’t pay for the office visit.

Embrace

Embrace pet insurance

Embrace is one of the lowest cost pet insurance providers we found during our research. This company offers no per-incident limits on claims, no lifetime limits, and an A+ rating with the BBB. Claims are paid within 5-15 days, and if you have multiple pets, you may be eligible for a discount.

Like Healthy Paws, Embrace puts some hip dysplasia limits in the policy. There’s a six month waiting period for care related to the condition — but plans will cover at least part of the costs in the event your dog needs to have hip surgery.

What we like about Embrace is that plans come with an annual allowance for wellness care, which can be used for vaccinations, microchipping, and check-ups. And you even get a 10% discount if you’re covering more than one pet.

Bottom Line

Whether you decide to buy pet insurance boils down to a few different elements. It’s an emotional decision that impacts the quality of care your furry family members receive.

It’s important to understand that pet insurance works a bit differently than human health insurance. The main difference is, when you go to the doctor, you’ll pay for medical bills at the rate predetermined by your provider. Conversely, when you take your pet to the doctor, you’ll typically cover the fees yourself and apply for reimbursement — kind of like car insurance.

Make sure you look for a policy that covers both illnesses and injuries. Most plans don’t cover preventative care, so you’ll also want to consider that you’ll still be paying for routine care. Finally, as we’ve seen with Healthy Paws, pet insurance rates and coverage depends on your pet’s age and sometimes, size. As such, read the fine print closely before signing a contract.

5 best online shopping sites for your pets

Here are 5 great sites to treat your pet this holiday season!

With the holiday season fast approaching, the scramble to buy presents is already upon us. We’ve got presents for the kids (if you haven’t heard of Fortnite … look up Fortnite), presents for your parents, gifts for your friends and co-workers … and you better not forget gifts for your pets!

But how to pick the best gift for your furry friend? Many a feline owner has piles of cat toys littering the corners of their living room or den – deemed sub-par by their recipients. Get a chew toy for your dog and they’ll likely enjoy it for a few hours before utterly demolishing it to a pile of rags and fluff all over your carpet.

Fear not, because there’s a toy out there for every pet, and we’re going to help you find the best! Better yet, everything on our list can be delivered right to your door! So no need to worry about Christmas shopping or the mad rush of Black Friday. Take a look at our top 5 suggestions.

Best online shopping sites for pet supplies

1. Beds, crates, and gates

If you’ve got a finicky feaster or a demolition doggy who likes to trash his toys, this might be the best place to start. Petflow.com has a huge variety of gifts for all kinds of animals, and in our experience giving your pet a pillow, bed, blanket, or cage that they can call their own is a sure-fire way of saying ‘you’re part of the family and you have a home here.’

Your cat will feel so happy and at home with a new warm cat bed.

We also find these gifts are especially good for families with multiple pets; this way everybody’s got a spot to lay claim to where they’ll feel cozy and welcome during the holidays.

2. Barkshop is a dog’s paradise

Be it chew toys, plush pals, tasty treats, or even health helpers, Barkshop.com is canine capital. “We’re here for you and your dog. We’ve never met your dog, but we know we love them,” they say, and looking at the awesome selection, we’ve got to agree! Our favorite thing about Barkshop is that they don’t just have a section for toys or a section for food. They’ve got subcategories for practically everything, so they can cater their products to exactly what you need.

Make this year an awesome Christmas for your pupper!

Take Wellness, for example: Aside from just general health, you can specifically look for supplements, anxiety, or CBD (which they suggest using if your dog suffers from stress, pain relief, or chronic illness).

3. Your bird deserves presents too!

There are websites all over the place that readily offer gifts for your dog or cat, but when it comes to less common animals like birds or horses it gets a little trickier. Luckily Budgetpetcare has you covered. They’ve got loads of health items for your bird to keep them happy and in good spirits for this holiday season, such as crop conker treatments, mediworm powder, anti-oxidant powders, and more.

For horses they’ve got all manner of bots, skin care products, and protection against tapeworms, redworms, and roundworms.

Not a reindeer, but the next closest thing!

4. All the cat supplies you could ever want

EntirelyPets offers items for far more than just cats, but when it comes to our feline friends, they’ve got a selection that’s hard to top. Their toy selection alone boasts a lot of versatility, offering toys in rubber or plush, but they’ve also got more reliable standards like scratching posts and of course the infamous laser pointers.

We like EntirelyPets because toys aren’t all they do, either. They’ve also got dry food, wet food, and a slew of health products, skin and coat care vitamins, behavior and training options, and food supplements to keep your cat in tip-top shape!

5. Don’t forget the little guys!

Amazon.com is probably the first place that comes to mind when you consider online shopping, and we’ve got to admit – they do an incredible job when it comes to offering products for small animals like gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, or chinchillas. Check out their selection of Timothy Hay, pellets, cages, toys, and brushes!

Christmas bunnies!

You probably won’t find necessities with quality ratings this high or prices this low on any of the other sites we mentioned, so if you’re on a budget, but love your pet and are looking for a good time to stock up, Amazon’s selection is right up your alley!

Let us know if we helped you find what you were looking for, and Happy holidays to you and your pet!

Snapchat reaches historic technological milestone by creating selfie filters for cats

Uh, thanks, Snapchat.

Nearly 50 years ago, the greatest technological innovation ever seen was the moon landing.

When the Apollo 11’s lunar module landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong spoke his famous words, everyone watching knew that their lives were about to change forever. For centuries, humanity gazed at the moon, sitting brightly among the stars, humbled by its foreboding size and unending glow. At last, in 1969 humanity had conquered the moon and seemingly achieved technological control over the universe. For a long time, I wondered what my generation’s “moon landing” would be. Something that challenges the limits of human potential and achieves the impossible. While scrolling through Twitter on October 12, 2018, I finally received my answer.

I sat, jaw agape. Was it possible? Had Snapchat truly done it? For years, cats being left in the dust while their human friends enjoyed the thrills and silliness of Snapchat filters had been the cause of countless suffering. Animal rights groups worldwide chanted the same question: If humans are so worthy of Snapchat filters, why aren’t cats? What unspeakable crime have cats committed that they aren’t able to enjoy a flower crown like the rest of us? Thankfully, cats and their human allies can now rest easy that their efforts weren’t in vain.

With this new technological revelation, everything changes: politics, religion, questions on what it means to be human. No conversation will be the same after humanity was able to put bread on a cat.

It’s truly inspiring what humanity can accomplish when everyone works together towards some unobtainable, world-changing goal. For years, cat selfies seemed so far away that no one dared to even try. Snapchat should be proud, because they now have truly left their mark on the world for centuries to come. Edison had the lightbulb, the Wright brothers had the plane, Bell had the phone, and now, as we witness it today Snapchat has the cat selfie.
