Duke Nukem 3D fans who crave a Halloween-themed experience have good news. The mod Duke Nukem: Horror Castle, created by modder WilliamGee, transforms the classic game into a spooky adventure that offers 3-5 hours of fun in a nine-level campaign. In this version, Duke explores various gothic fortresses instead of his usual sci-fi settings while facing 24 new enemies, including wandering skeletons, vampire bats, and Nosferatu-inspired creatures.
An extremely well-achieved atmosphere of terror
In addition to introducing new enemies, Horror Castle features four iconic minibosses from the original game, which can be shrunk and crushed. Players will also have access to innovative weapons like the Bone Crusher, a weapon that allows them to throw huge spiders at enemies and then dismember them with bone shards. Duke’s health is restored in an unconventional way: by eating from skulls left in his path, adding a grotesque touch to the gameplay.
Recently, WilliamGee updated the mod to add a more specific Halloween theme, including new items like pumpkins and ghosts, as well as a secret level featuring custom enemies. Those interested can download Duke Nukem: Horror Castle through ModDB.
While the chances of seeing a new official Duke game in the short term are slim, the modding community is thriving, with projects in development like Voxel Duke Nukem 3D. Rumors indicate that there could also be a television series based on Duke Nukem, produced by Adi Shankar, known for his work on Castlevania and Devil May Cry. Shankar acquired the rights to the franchise from Gearbox earlier this year, suggesting a revitalization of the iconic character outside the world of video games.
