The best adaptation of Hannibal Lecter is coming to streaming to whet our appetite again

Hannibal Lecter is one of the most fascinating characters in the history of fiction. Intelligent, brilliant, elegant, and with a particular temperament, he is the kind of person that many people would like to be. Except because he is a cannibalistic serial killer. The fascination he has inspired since the publication of the first book in which he appears, Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, in 1981, has only grown. Because few characters have been able to capture the public’s imagination over the years. That is why it should not surprise us that he has appeared in a whole series […]

Hannibal Lecter is one of the most fascinating characters in the history of fiction. Intelligent, brilliant, elegant, and with a particular temperament, he is the kind of person that many people would like to be. Except for the fact that he is a cannibalistic serial killer. The fascination he has inspired since the publication of the first book in which he appears, Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, in 1981, has only grown. Because few characters have been able to capture the public’s imagination over the years.

That’s why it shouldn’t surprise us that he has appeared in a whole series of novels where he was either a protagonist or an antagonist. That he has had adaptations to film of all kinds. Nor should it be surprising that a particular series has managed to capture the essence of his character like no other to the point that the fact it is being released again on streaming becomes a reason for celebration. Because Hannibal is one of the best series of the 2010s. Or one of the best series, period.

An actor worthy of the legend

Hannibal, created by Bryan Fuller, known for being the author of series like Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, or American Gods, is based on the books by Thomas Harris, particularly on Red Dragon, Hannibal, and Hannibal: The Origin of Evil to create its own version of the character. Not exactly the same Hannibal as the characters nor the same story, although it adapts some of the things that happen in the books, but its own version. One where the protagonist, Will Graham, an FBI psychologist specialized in getting into the minds of criminals to create psychological profiles of them, teams up with the psychiatrist and genius FBI consultant, Hannibal Lecter, to capture what is essentially a weekly serial killer. All of this without anyone knowing that Lecter himself is a killer. At least during the first season.

Hannibal is elegant, intelligent, wise, and seems like a figure beyond human, in every possible sense, and part of that is thanks to the incredible acting work of Mads Mikkelsen. Although he was already a very famous and beloved actor in Denmark, especially for his work with directors like Nicolas Winding Refn, Peter Lindmark, and Thomas Vinterberg, it was his mesmerizing presence as Lecter in Hannibal that made him the Hollywood star he is today.

Something that the romantic and sexual tension with Will Graham, played by the absolutely incredible Hugh Dancy. An actor capable of demonstrating a vulnerability and fragility so real that it seems he is on the verge of breaking down every time he enters the scene, and almost every time in a different way. Only seeming capable of holding himself together in the presence of his dogs, the love of his life, and Hannibal.

This has led to the series generating a lot of fanfiction about Hannibal and Hugh as a couple. Somewhat problematic, yet interesting, given the relationship they develop throughout the seasons.

Impeccable Art

Another reason why the series had unprecedented success is that there is not a single artistic aspect where it is not absolutely superb. The food presented looks tremendously elaborate and exquisite, no matter that it is made with human beings. The deaths and violence are brutal and have a ritualistic component, but it is always aestheticized to have an artistic component in itself. The music is strange, gloomy, but has an incomprehensible beauty due to how its composer, Brian Reitzell, uses all kinds of instruments to compose it. The artistic design makes it feel like we are seeing the world through Hannibal’s eyes. Violent, ritualistic, and exquisite.

It also helps that the direction is fantastic with some top-level directors known for their extraordinary obsession with composition and imagery, such as David Slade, Vincenzo Natali, or Neil Marshall. Or that the scripts combine a subtlety in the progression of the relationship between the characters, an addictive writing in the weekly case’s progress, and witty and tremendously intelligent dialogues.

Hence, there is a genuine celebration that the three seasons of Hannibal are arriving on Filmin starting today. In addition to the not-so-secret desire that one day they let Bryan Fuller make a fourth season to create his own version of the most well-known story of Hannibal Lecter: The Silence of the Lambs. Because if anyone has proven they can create something incredible, fascinating, disturbing, and impossible to look away from the screen with The Silence of the Lambs, other than the original movie, it is the creator of Hannibal.

Steven Spielberg, one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema, has revealed his regret for not having directed The Silence of the Lambs, a film that became a classic of the 90s and won five Academy Awards. This masterpiece, directed by Jonathan Demme, has left an indelible mark on cinematic culture, and Spielberg has realized the mistake he made by not taking on the direction.

Spielberg rejected one of the biggest movies of the 90s

In a recent interview, the director of Jurassic Park shared that his own team considered the script of The Silence of the Lambs to be inappropriate for him, which led to the choice of Demme. This announcement has reignited the debate about the movies that could have been, but which, due to creative decisions, never materialized under Spielberg’s vision. The filmmaker indicates that, after watching the film, he understood Demme’s success and regrets not having been behind the camera.

Interestingly, the same year that The Silence of the Lambs was released, Spielberg launched Hook, a film that, despite its commercial success of grossing 300 million dollars, did not satisfy the director. Spielberg has been outspoken about his dissatisfaction with the film, admitting that “he had no idea what he was doing” and that, in fact, he feels embarrassed by the final result.

Spielberg’s story reflects the dilemma faced by many directors: the balance between commercial success and personal satisfaction with art. Projects like The Silence of the Lambs highlight the brilliance of cinematography and the fate of films that, due to unexpected circumstances, do not end up in the hands of those who could have given them a distinctive touch.

The series Monsters, created by Ryan Murphy, has begun its third season on Netflix, focusing its narrative on the unsettling story of Ed Gein, a serial killer whose life inspired iconic films such as Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs. This new approach seeks to transform a horror icon into a human and complex character, a challenge that actor Charlie Hunnam has taken on with intense dedication.

A series with tremendous success featuring great actors

Known for his work in Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam has described his portrayal of Gein as “one of the greatest challenges” of his career. Through an intensive process, the actor immersed himself in the darkness of the character, seeking to understand “the emotional truth” that underlies his evil. This approach led him to deliberately lose 13 kilos, a decision that reflects Gein’s physical and emotional fragility, which raised Murphy’s concerns for his health.

The plot of Monsters does not seek to justify Gein’s violent actions, but rather to explore his complexity through a lens that questions whether monsters are a product of nature or nurture. Both sides agree that the series aims to illuminate the social and psychological factors that shaped his behavior. After months of portraying the criminal, Hunnam needed to close this personal chapter and traveled to Wisconsin to reflect at Gein’s grave, hoping he had told his story honestly.

The series, therefore, invites reflection on the origin of evil and human nature, seeking a deeper understanding beyond the superficial terror that traditionally surrounds these characters.

A Harry Potter actor was paid 500,000 dollars per minute on screen, which is why he appears so little in the movies

In the world of cinema, the screen time of a character does not always translate into their iconic reputation. Throughout the history of the seventh art, we have seen notable examples such as the shark in the movie Jaws, which appears for only 4 minutes, as well as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, who has only 12 minutes of footage. A more recent and fascinating case is that of Draco Malfoy, played by Tom Felton in the Harry Potter saga. Although his total screen time is only 31 minutes and 45 seconds across the eight films, his character has managed to capture the attention and affection of many fans.

An absolutely stratospheric cache

Draco Malfoy, initially seen as an antagonist, has evolved throughout the story, and his complexity has resonated with viewers, showing that goodness and evil are not always black and white. Despite his brief presence, Malfoy has become one of the most recognizable characters in the series based on the books by J.K. Rowling, highlighting the importance of character development in cinematic storytelling.

Interestingly, actor Tom Felton has become the highest paid member of the Harry Potter cast, receiving a salary of 17 million dollars for his participation. This amounts to more than 500,000 dollars for every minute on screen, a surprising figure when compared to his co-stars. Daniel Radcliffe, who played the protagonist Harry, earned 86 million for 539 minutes; Rupert Grint and Emma Watson received 36 and 40 million respectively for 211 and 205 minutes on screen. These figures not only reflect the popularity of the characters but also the appeal that the Harry Potter franchise has maintained over the years.

This role not only offered him worldwide recognition but also defined the spy film genre.

Sean Connery, a man with a very particular taste for cinema

Despite his success, Connery made surprising career choices, turning down roles in major franchises like The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Harry Potter, and Jurassic Park. Although the offers were irresistible, including 30 million dollars for each of the three The Lord of the Rings movies plus 15% of the profits, Connery prioritized his personal judgment over the scripts. In his own words, he stated he did not understand the plot when reading the book and the screenplay of the film adaptation.

Additionally, Connery was considered to play the famous Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. However, the actor turned down this offer, which allowed Anthony Hopkins to deliver one of the most memorable performances in film history, winning an Oscar for his role in a part that lasted only 16 minutes on screen. Director Jonathan Demme had noted that, in his opinion, Connery could have been incredible in the role, but fate had already decided otherwise.

Throughout his career, Connery also starred in acclaimed films such as The Untouchables, The Name of the Rose, The Hunt for Red October and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, cementing his status as a titan of cinema. His legacy endures and is analyzed, not only for his choice of roles but for the impact he had on the entertainment industry.
