How much will Marathon cost? Not even Bungie knows
One of the most confusing aspects so far has been the cost of the game. During the recent official presentation, Bungie was reserved when addressing the topic of price. Although it was mentioned that Marathon will be a premium title, it was clarified that it will not be at full price, which has generated confusion among fans. This suggests that, while it is unlikely to cost 70 euros, the exact price has not yet been defined and could be in a considerably lower range.
Bungie developers have indicated that they are considering player feedback to determine the final price. In a recent interview, game director Joe Ziegler commented that each player has a different perception of what constitutes a fair price, which reinforces the idea that the team is handling this decision carefully.
With Sony showing high expectations for the financial performance of Marathon, it is clear that the company is betting big on this title. However, setting a price that does not deter players before its release is a challenge. Given that the multiplayer shooter market is competitive, overpricing could negatively impact the perceived value of the game.
Marathon is one of the big releases of the year. It is the biggest title of this year from Sony and Bungie, and so far, they have not had a single failure. Destiny is a great franchise and Halo, while they were making it, had not a single bad installment. That’s why it’s interesting to see what they are cooking up with this game that can raise a question. Because they have said it is an extraction shooter, but what is an extraction shooter?
What is an extraction shooter?
To summarize a lot, what characterizes extraction shooters is that they are games where we have to enter a certain hostile area, gather as much loot as possible, and escape from there alive. Maintaining the gear and materials between matches, the more we play and the better we play, the better our character will be. At least until our character resets in each new season, forcing us to start from scratch.
This is a tough, difficult, and very satisfying genre. And that’s why we are going to recommend the six most interesting games in the genre that are currently on the market. Because not everything is about waiting to see if Bungie can democratize a genre that is considered too complex to reach the masses.
The most popular game in the genre, also one of the toughest. Set in a fictional region of Eastern Europe, we are part of a private military company at war with another military company where we have a single objective: to venture into hostile territory, gather all the materials and weapons we can, and escape from there. Very focused on weapon skills, but also on achieving maximum realism with its injury and survival system, it is a game as complex as it is satisfying. But you will need more than a couple of YouTube videos to start mastering it.
One of the first extraction shooters is one of the most famous. And not without reason. Here we are a monster hunter who must take down a mythical creature in a series of different scenarios, with one particularity. There are also other monster hunters who want to do the same. We can try to ally with other players to achieve the objectives or attack them, but whatever we do, before going after the monsters we will have to find the clues of where they are and go in search of them. Because the life of a hunter is never easy, no matter how mythical the creatures may be.
The most recent addition to the genre is also one of the most striking. In a post-apocalyptic world where an eternal war occurs between three countries controlled by AIs, war machines fight 24/7 without stopping. In Forever Winter, we are nothing more than simple humans trying to survive these battles, making our way and stealing what we can in an absolutely hostile world where everything can kill us, and drawing attention will ensure we end up three meters underground. Absolutely hostile, tremendously dark, and with a base resource management that makes each fight even more desperate, it is one of the most interesting extraction shooters you can play today.
All the other games on this list are 3D games that aim to be as realistic as possible. Zero Sievert tries something diametrically opposite. It is a top-down game with relatively simple pixelated graphics that seeks to create a completely different experience. Skill is less important than knowledge, and that makes many people appreciate this game above the rest of the genre: there is no way to overcome knowing what you should do and when in each situation. Because it doesn’t matter how good you are at aiming in Zero Sievert. Nothing will save your life out there if you don’t know what you’re doing.
Perhaps the most controversial inclusion, because in fairness it is more of an RPG shooter than an extraction shooter, but at the end of the day there is such an evident overlap between both genres in the case of Witchfire that it is different to separate them. If you want an entry into the genre that is based on a structure more similar to Destiny 2, with RPG-style dungeons, as well as the ability to mod your weapons, Witchfire is the perfect way to understand what extraction shooters offer without having to face a pure game of the genre.
The other great game of the genre. A very unique game both for its aesthetics and its approach and setting, because Deep Rock Galactic has a much greater focus on PvE, as in this game we have a single objective: to travel to strange planets to extract materials from their mines and survive. This means we will have to work as a team to obtain the maximum amount of materials possible and repel the alien threats lurking in every place. With a procedurally generated cave system, no game is the same as another, and if you want a cooperative game that can last an infinite amount of time, no other will offer you what Deep Rock: Galactic does.
Bungie, known for its iconic legacy in video game development, is venturing into a crowded genre with the release of Marathon, a PvPvE extraction shooter. Bungie, known for its iconic legacy in video game development, is venturing into a crowded genre with the release of Marathon, a PvPvE extraction shooter. As the studio enters a market already dominated by titles like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown, Bungie’s strategy aims to attract not only veteran players but also those who have had limited or unsatisfactory experiences with extraction shooters in the past.
A game that seeks to simplify an extremely complex genre
Joe Ziegler, the game director, has emphasized that Marathon aims to provide a new and interesting experience, focusing on what truly attracts players to extraction shooters. According to Ziegler, the goal is to eliminate the complexity that often accompanies this type of game, making the mechanics more accessible for new players. “We want to give players what they expect from an extraction shooter in terms of tension and survival, without the need to learn a new set of rules,” he commented.
Andrew Witts, gameplay director, added that the intention is for Marathon to be easy to share with friends, allowing anyone to take control and enjoy the experience without a steep learning curve. Simplicity in action and gameplay are key elements that Bungie is trying to highlight with this title.
After playing Marathon for eight hours, although critics are unsure if it will achieve comparable success to other recent releases, Bungie’s proposal suggests a notable effort to build an accessible title aligned with current expectations in the world of video games. As the release date approaches, interest in seeing how Marathon will perform in such a competitive market continues to grow.
Bungie is not in its best situation. In addition to several large-scale scandals, it seems they have been losing a lot of money for some time now. That doesn’t take away from the fact that Destiny 2 is in one of its sweetest moments. And on the horizon, it seems they have a secure future with the return of the legendary Marathon, this time in the form of an extraction shooter. We now know the first relevant details about it. And on the horizon, it seems they have a secured future with the return of the legendary Marathon, this time in the form of an extraction shooter. We now know the first relevant details about it.
Several different sources have been talking to The Game Post about this game, clarifying some aspects about the first product of the relationship between Sony and Bungie. Perhaps the most unexpected thing is that, like the two service games that Sony has already published, Marathon will not be free-to-play. It will be a paid game that will cost 40 euros.
Getting into what interests us the most, one of The Game Post’s sources has been able to provide some information about the state of the game and what we can expect from it. According to this person, Marathon will follow the class structure of games like Escape from Tarkov, but with a Bungie-style twist. Additionally, they already have two maps completed in a fully playable state. One of them is aboard the Marathon ship and the other in an abandoned colony on an alien planet.
All this fits with what we already know about the game. Having seen nothing more than a trailer, the information we have so far is that it will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and that it will be an extraction shooter. Additionally, its release plan was for 2024 until a delay made its release date completely indefinite at the time of writing. This would lend credibility to the fact that they have at least two maps already in a fully playable state.
After the failure of Concord and the cancellation of more than half of its free-to-play game projects, the general feeling is that Marathon is Sony’s big bet for this type of game. Despite the resounding success of Helldivers 2, it does not seem that this shift towards online component games has notably worked for the Japanese company. That is why we will be attentive to what happens with Marathon and Bungie. Because it will probably mean a lot for the future of Sony.
Marathon is an exciting action game developed by Bungie for Play Station 5. The game is set in a lost colony on Tau Ceti IV, where a massive ghost ship hangs in low orbit. The game revolves around strange signals hinting at mysterious artifacts, dormant artificial intelligence, and countless treasures. You play as a runner, venturing into the unknown in a fight for fame and infamy.
Battlestate Games, the developers of Escape from Tarkov, have shot themselves in the foot with the new edition of their game, blocking its new content.
Sometimes video game studios make absurd decisions. Not controversial. Not unpopular. Just absurd. Decisions that anyone would be able to see will not only be poorly received, but will actively harm the business. To the point where the press has to cover the disaster you have caused. This is exactly what happened with the latest decision from Battlestate Game, the studio behind Escape from Tarkov.
On April 25th, the studio announced a new bundle for the game called The Unheard Edition. This new edition would include a new cooperative PvE mode and numerous improvements that would give players advantages during the game. With a price of $250, it was expected that the audience would not be happy even if it contained all the DLC. But the community rose up in arms because there was something beyond its price.
Before the release of this edition, Battlestate Game released an edition called Edge of Darkness. Now no longer available, this edition cost 100 dollars and included a battle pass that promised access to all future DLC. Only to discover that, for some reason, the new PvE mode cannot be accessed from the Edge of Darkness edition.
That was not the only complaint. Players also complained about the fact that they considered the new improvements to be pay-to-win. Something difficult to argue, when this $250 edition offers a greater capacity to hoard items, improved abilities, and the possibility that some NPCs do not attack us. Something that undeniably offers a clear advantage over other players.
The chief community manager, Daniel Mavlyuberdinov, commented on the first issue, although he didn’t say anything about the second one. The reason for not including the PvE mode in the battle pass is, according to his own words, because it doesn’t count as DLC. Stating that it is a new feature, the fact that the public called it DLC doesn’t mean that it is, which is why those who purchased the Edge of Darkness edition cannot obtain it for free. As an alternative, and to further fuel the controversy, Mavlyuberdinov suggested that players spend another $250 to buy the Battlestate Game edition and have access to everything.
Of course, fans were not happy with the decision. Something that made them have to close all the game channels, as they were complaining about this decision in absolutely all the game chats. Which was absolutely inevitable. Even if in the game’s Reddit they decided to keep the doors open, with great control over the content.
It was on Reddit where the CEO of Battlestate Games, named Nikita Buyanov, wrote the latest piece of history so far. Clarifying that this is not a DLC, because they consider a DLC to be something that is included after the game’s release and the game has not been released yet, they don’t have to offer it to users who have the battle pass. But given the complaints from players, they have decided to offer all the content from the Unheard Edition to everyone who has the Edge of Darkness edition. Upon the game’s release.
This has not alleviated the anger of the fans at all. Admitting that it may take years for the game to be released, it is possible that they may not be able to enjoy this content for a long time. If they ever get to enjoy it at all. To compensate them, Buyanov offered a 50% discount, for a limited time, to upgrade to The Unheard edition for those who already have Edge of Darkness. Which also doesn’t seem to solve much.
All of this makes the game’s fans continue to be furious with the situation, with the company still not backing down. What will happen in the future with Escape from Tarkov remains up in the air, but what seems obvious is that this is not the last we have heard of the game.

As you may already know, regular Escape from Tarkov players, the game by Battlestate Games received a new patch a few days ago that brought some interesting fixes, but that wasn’t the only thing that arrived in the game. In addition to those improvements and solutions to certain issues that a title like this usually faces, Escape from Tarkov received the first elements of its highly anticipated Halloween event, one that is now much more complete and ready to be enjoyed today, during the night of the mentioned holiday.
As we mentioned, Escape from Tarkov’s Halloween event arrived a few days ago alongside the new patch for the game, which was released on October 26th. However, yesterday, the game developers added more elements to celebrate Halloween with their players in the best way possible. Among other things, the maps in the game now feature decorations in line with the date we are on today, October 31st. In other words, it’s easy to recognize that we are in the midst of the Halloween event within the game.
With the initial arrival of the patch, players started to notice how loot containers changed their appearance to that of a pumpkin, something that some enemies also began to use as helmets in the game. Now, Escape from Tarkov has also made the boss Zyrachiy appear in all maps with a 100% spawn rate. In addition, rituals can now be found in entirely random locations when the boss is defeated, and a poisonous green flare has been added to the scav loot, the game’s enemies.
Obviously, this hasn’t been the only thing added, as Tagilla, one of the bosses in the game, has also been equipped with a scythe and appears on maps like Factory and The Lab. Beyond what’s been mentioned, there are other additions, such as the event that occurs when the game’s rituals are successful, as this generates an invincible Zyrachiy and permanently locks the weapons. There are quite a few additions in this new Halloween event for the mentioned game, and we don’t know how long they will remain in the game. In other words, at the moment, we don’t know when the mentioned thematic event will end.
To finish, and as we mentioned earlier, the patch recently received by Escape from Tarkov, in addition to the already mentioned Halloween event, also added several fixes to the title and other improvements aimed at enhancing the enemy AI.
