You are not prepared for Final Fantasy 17: the director thinks on a radical change for the franchise

Final Fantasy XVII could represent a radical change for the franchise, as the director of Final Fantasy XVI would like a new young director to take charge of it.

Final Fantasy is a franchise that is based on always offering a twist compared to previous installments. It is the most experimental of mainstream JRPGs, if not one of the most experimental JRPGs in general. It is always trying new things, offering new perspectives, whether they are popular with fans or not. That’s why the worst Final Fantasy is always the latest one and the penultimate one was always vilified without reason; it’s the natural cycle of the saga.

In this regard, Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy XVI, was asked in an interview at the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences if he will be the one to direct Final Fantasy XVII. Clarifying that nothing has been decided yet, he offered his perspective. In his point of view, having already worked on Final Fantasy XIV and XVI, it would be time for someone different to take the reins of the franchise. And preferably, a young director should do it.

Challenge the past to improve every game

Emphasizing that Final Fantasy has always tried to challenge what has been done before, Yoshida believes that a young director would be more capable of doing exactly that. That’s why, for Final Fantasy XVII, someone who would challenge the things he has done in Final Fantasy XVI would be the ideal choice. This is something that has happened many times in the franchise’s history, and it wouldn’t be strange for it to happen again here.

In addition, he wanted to emphasize the size that Final Fantasy has. These are games that have been in development for many years. That’s why he believes it’s important that whoever is in charge of the next installment, they must be someone with a clear and defined idea of what they want it to be even before starting the project.

In any case, all of this is just castles in the air. As Yoshida himself states, nothing has been decided yet, or at least, nothing that Square Enix wants to share with the public. Only time will tell which path Final Fantasy will take in the future and whether it will bring a radical change to the franchise or continue along the lines set by Final Fantasy XVI. Which still has a lot to offer to players.

Final Fantasy XVI has some news for us: all of them are paid, and only one will make your morning happier

Naoki Yoshida has confirmed new information about Final Fantasy XVI, ensuring that the game will continue to receive content.

No Final Fantasy game is truly finished once it hits store shelves. Between re-releases, DLCs, expansions, new versions, and new stories, there isn’t a single game in the franchise that hasn’t had at least some form of update or enhancement from its original release. Of course, Final Fantasy XVI is no exception, and as such, we now have some news about it. Only one of them is unquestionably positive.

During the recent PAX West 2023, held from September 1st to 4th, there was a conference where Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida spoke. In that conference, he confirmed several things about the game’s future, including that it will have two paid DLCs.

Ensuring that the studio has been attentive to player feedback, the idea is for people to be able to spend more time in Valisthea, the game world of Final Fantasy XVI. However, we still don’t know much about these DLCs, as Yoshida himself has confirmed that he hopes to share more about the DLC before the end of the year.

On the positive side, he also announced that a free update would be released shortly after the conference. Modifying aspects of the arcade mode, fixing numerous bugs, and addressing some cosmetic issues, they continue to gradually improve the game.

This announcement helps with the big reveal that Yoshida made. As we already knew, he confirmed that Final Fantasy XVI’s exclusivity is only for six months, and the production of the PC version is already underway. While there are no specific dates yet, he hopes to share more information before the end of the year. This gives us hope for the future of this game, which may have disappointed some at launch but still promises to become a great game.

The Final Fantasy XVI that you never imagined: with actresses of flesh and blood

Final Fantasy XVI is not being the great success that Square Enix expected at the moment, but its first adaptation has already been announced: a musical

Final Fantasy XVI, like all Final Fantasy, has had a mixed reception where it is unclear whether or not we should declare it a success. While it is true that in general terms we can say that it is a good game, it is undeniable that many people have been disappointed by what the game has to bring. Even when experimentation and change have been the differentiating gesture of Final Fantasy since its first installment, it’s something that many people still don’t accept from the franchise, something that has taken its toll on this Final Fantasy XVI. Which doesn’t mean we’re going to stop hearing news of it any time soon, as evidenced by the fact that its first adaptation is already on its way.

Takarazuka Revue has confirmed on its website that its Cosmos Company will be making a musical adaptation of Final Fantasy XVI. Running from May 17 to June 23, 2024 at the Takarazuka Grand Theater in Takarazuka, and running from July 13 to August 25, 2024 at the Tokyo Takarazuka Theatre in Tokyo, Naoko Koyanagi is in charge of writing and directing this musical.

This is great news because, in fact, Takarazuka Revue is Japan’s most prestigious all-female musical company. With a prominently female fandom, very much invested in their productions, they are famous for two particular aspects: they adapt both classic plays and musicals as well as modern pop culture works into musicals, and all roles, whether male or female, are played by women. Something that has led them to special recognition, but also to a very particular system within the company itself, where actresses are governed based on a hierarchical system based on years within the company. In this way, the actresses are usually divided between those who play male roles and those who play female roles, establishing very particular roles, with a very rigid system, within the company itself.

With its origins in the Takarazuka Music School, the theater company was created in 1913 and has never accepted any men among its ranks. Similarly, Tarazuka has its own school for actresses and actresses are expected to live in dormitories, with the exception of the Top Stars, the actresses who carry the burden of all the leading roles in the troupe. As is easy to assume, Takarazuka actresses are not allowed to maintain any kind of romantic relationship with any man, and even socializing with men, in general, has become absolutely forbidden in the past. Something that has been parodied, in a non-sarcastic way, in some video games, such as the TRPG classic Sakura Wars or the recently appeared in the West mix of visual novel and rhythm game Jack Jeanne.

In addition, within Tarazuka there are several companies. The Flower Company, which specializes in dance; the Moon Company, which specializes in recitals; the Snow Company, which specializes in singing; the Star Company, which specializes in traditional performances; and the Cosmos Company, which will perform the adaptation of Final Fantasy XVI, which specializes in experimental and contemporary works.

Thanks to a very loyal audience, divided between a young female audience that follows particular stars as if they were pop divas and a not-so-young female and male audience that appreciates the company for its production values and exquisite stage work, Takarazuka is one of the most famous musical theater companies in all of Japan. Probably in the whole world. So it’s great news for Square Enix that they’ve decided to look at Final Fantasy XVI to make a musical, at a perfect time for people from overseas to attend, as they can target two potential audiences they’re particularly interested in. Even if, for this, we will still have to wait almost a year.

Assessing the Numbers: Is Final Fantasy XVI Underperforming in Sales and Player Reception?

There may not be less hype for the game, or it may not even have sold less than the previous one, but the drop in week two is harder to explain.

Getting the predictions right for this year’s hits and misses is purely a matter of luck. ‘Indiana Jones’ is a failure, ‘Barbie’ is a success, ‘Zelda’ is a smash hit, and… what about ‘Final Fantasy XVI’? What’s happening with it? In a 2023 filled with blockbusters in film, television, and video games, it seems to have fallen victim to the lack of hype. Specifically, a person can only be excited about a certain number of things throughout the months. Or perhaps we are mistaken, and it has secretly been a huge success? Let’s analyze it.

Final Fantasy XVI DOWNLOAD

Pure fantasy (final)

Since the beginning of time, ‘Final Fantasy’ sales have only gone up and up without limits. ‘Final Fantasy XV’ sold five million copies just on its release. Six years have passed since then, and the numbers are far from being as impressive now: in its first week, the sixteenth installment of the franchise had to settle for three million units. There are explanations, of course.

The first, the most obvious one: far fewer people have a PS5 compared to those who had a PS4. Additionally, ‘Final Fantasy XV’ was released simultaneously on Xbox One, and at that time digital sales (which are not accounted for) were much lower than they are now. And all of this is very true: it’s possible that there isn’t less hype for the game, or that it hasn’t even sold less than its predecessor, but the drop in the second week is harder to explain.

In Japan, the game sold 336,027 units in the first week, but for the second week, it dropped an incredible 88% to only 37,763 units, painting a rather bleak outlook for its future. It seems like everyone who wanted ‘Final Fantasy XVI’ has already purchased it, and now only residual sales remain. It’s not the only major country where it saw a decline from one week to another: in the UK, for example, it experienced a steep drop of 78% and was once again surpassed by ‘Tears of the Kingdom’, resulting in a double somersault with bruises.

The reception has not been as expected for a game in the franchise, partly due to its different gameplay style and partly because nothing on the screen resembles the ‘Final Fantasy’ we know. Perhaps with the price drop of the PS5, the fan base will grow and expand, but the future outlook for Square Enix doesn’t look promising. The question, at this point, is not whether there will be changes in ‘Final Fantasy XVII’, but rather… if there will be a ‘Final Fantasy XVII’ at all.

Get Ahead of the Game: Final Fantasy XVI Buyers Can Dive into the Action from Day One

Final Fantasy XVI will have a day one patch to fix some issues that players noticed in the game demo.

Day one patches are an unfortunately common occurrence in modern video games, and it seems that Final Fantasy XVI won’t be exempt from them. Square Enix has announced that the game will receive an update on launch day, aimed at refining some minor performance issues. This update will also include the option to enable or disable motion blur effects, the ability to customize button mapping, and the option to deactivate auto-tracking. These additions were based on player feedback following the recently released game demo.

Final Fantasy XVI DOWNLOAD

While it may seem like common news, as day one patches are a common occurrence in the industry, it is noteworthy precisely because the studio had initially stated that they likely wouldn’t need a day one patch for the game. Final Fantasy XVI has been undergoing polishing for several months, and they were hoping to release it without the need for any patch, as stated by its director, Hiroshi Takai. That’s why this decision is so surprising.

However, the game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida, has explained that the day one patch, which is only around 300 megabytes in size, will only need to be downloaded by those who purchase the physical version of the game. Those who purchase the digital version of Final Fantasy XVI will either have it pre-installed or it will be ready before the launch, so they won’t have to worry about the patch.

Yoshida has taken the opportunity to apologize for the necessity of a day one patch, even though they never promised that such a patch wouldn’t be released. However, he has emphasized multiple times that even players without an internet connection, and therefore unable to install the patch, will still be able to play the game perfectly fine, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

The release of Final Fantasy XVI is scheduled for June 22nd exclusively on PlayStation 5. While it is indeed disappointing that it will ultimately require a day one patch, the fact that the patch is only 300 megabytes and is intended to polish minor aspects of the game is a testament to Square Enix’s work on their biggest title of 2023.

To unveil the most important games coming out this month so you can decide what to buy, knowing everything that’s being released or at least, everything among the major titles.

Street Fighter 6 – June 2

PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X y Series S, Arcade, Microsoft Windows

No one has missed the fact that Street Fighter has returned with its most ambitious installment to date, Street Fighter 6. Capcom’s game has taken everything learned from Street Fighter V to reinvent itself both stylistically and mechanically, making it more accessible to new players while still captivating the classic fighting game audience. Perfect for casual gaming, where you can enjoy throwing punches with only a basic understanding of the mechanics, as well as competitive play, Street Fighter 6 has set the bar very high for any other game vying for the title of the best fighting game of 2023.

Diablo IV – June 6

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X y Series S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

One of the biggest titles of the month is undoubtedly Diablo IV. With several open and closed betas and a somewhat tumultuous development, this game from Activision Blizzard is poised to be not only one of the standout titles in June but of the entire year. It’s no surprise, considering it belongs to a legendary saga with a dedicated following. While Diablo III may not have fully met fans’ expectations, the success of Diablo Immortal proves that there is an eager audience hungry for slaying, looting corpses, equipping better items, enhancing their skills, and facing increasingly powerful enemies to repeat the process.

Layers of Fear – June 15

PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X y Xbox Series S

Bloober Team has been busy working on the remake of Silent Hill 2, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t had time to create a third installment in the Layers of Fear franchise. Although also titled Layers of Fear, this game serves as both a remake of the first two Layers of Fear games and a third installment that finally concludes the trilogy by merging the previous two games into a single experience and adding a third chapter to complete the set. Built on Unreal Engine 5, taking advantage of its capabilities and improving some of the weaker aspects of the originals, Layers of Fear promises to be the ultimate experience for fans of this unique horror saga.

F1 23 – June 16

PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X y Series S, Microsoft Windows

Formula 1 evokes passion, and that’s why we can’t overlook the release of F1 23. While it’s true that F1 22 was one of the most disappointing releases in the Codemasters franchise in recent years, it was by no means a bad game. Fortunately, it seems they have understood what the issues were. The Braking Point story mode, which made its debut in F1 2021, returns, all driving physics have been completely overhauled, and several specific race options have been changed. Will this be enough to return to the podium of F1 games? Who knows. What we do know is that Codemasters knows how to excel in racing games like no other, and it would be rare to see them stumble two years in a row.

Aliens: Dark Descent – June 20

PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X y Series S, Microsoft Windows

Alien is experiencing a second youth, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a new game in the franchise, Aliens: Dark Descent, is being released this month. Set 20 years after the events of Alien 3, players take on the roles of four marines who must confront xenomorphs and agents of the Weyland-Yutani corporation while searching for resources in the lunar base of Lethe to repair their spaceship. With a top-down view, this real-time strategy game promises action-packed gameplay and, despite its genre, fully adapted controls for consoles as well. It may not be one of the AAA titles of the month, but it holds great promise for both Alien fans and RTS enthusiasts.

Final Fantasy XVI – June 22

PlayStation 5

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone that another major title of the month is Final Fantasy XVI. The new installment of Square Enix’s legendary franchise has been undergoing polishing for months, with numerous trailers released and the press having had the opportunity to extensively play and review it, garnering constant praise. Its shift towards an action-oriented style, reminiscent of Devil May Cry 5, may not please all fans of the series, but it is undoubtedly a logical change in a franchise that has always been characterized by each new installment being completely different from the previous one.

AEW Fight Forever – June 29

Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X y Series S, Microsoft Windows

While wrestling is often associated with WWE, AEW has begun to overshadow its success and now seeks to do so even further with its first game, AEW Fight Forever. Looking to differentiate itself from the competition with a much more arcade-style game, where the focus is on polished animations and mechanics rather than graphics, the game promises a old-school style reminiscent of the legendary WWF No Mercy, considered the best wrestling game of all time. We will still have to wait and see if it manages to live up to the absolute classic, but in the battle against WWE in the realm of video games, everything looks favorable for AEW.

Master Detective Archives: Rain Code – June 30

Nintendo Switch

To finish off June, when many people will already be thinking about vacations and others who don’t have vacations yet, there’s nothing better than a good adventure with mysteries and ghosts that you can take anywhere, such as Master Detective Archives: Rain Code. Exclusive to Nintendo Switch, this game by Too Kyo Games is written by Kazutaka Kodaka, famous for being the scriptwriter behind the Danganronpa series. This means that we can expect absurd humor, cruel deaths that make us laugh, and intricate yet tremendously satisfying mysteries to solve. It’s likely to be an unexpected gem for all lovers of detective fiction.

Saying Goodbye to Tradition: ‘Final Fantasy XVI’ Marks the Possible Conclusion of the Iconic Series

Naoki Yoshida, the director of 'Final Fantasy XVI', is open to doing something that would spell the end of the franchise as we know it.

It is curious that ‘Final Fantasy’ was, literally, the last game that Squaresoft was to launch before closing its doors and saved them to this day. The saga has seen more than 35 years of history through its 16 main installments (and countless spin-offs, revisitations and remakes). Now, Naoki Yoshida, the director of ‘Final Fantasy XVI‘, is open to doing something that would mean the end of the franchise as we know it.

The numbers don’t add up

And it has to do with the numbers that accompany each title. Just like the movies get rid of them after a certain installment (‘Halloween,’ ‘Evil Doll,’ ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’), Yoshida believes there are more cons than pros to continuing to number the games in the series: “A lot of gamers are going to go in and look at it like a comic book where you have to read from the beginning to know what’s going on now. It’s hard for marketing because every numbered title we release in the series we have to say, ‘Okay, you don’t have to play the rest.'” Mind you, ‘Final Fantasy VI’ you do have to play it. Not for continuity, but because it’s really good.

Ready to take all the blame and not foreseeing how protective fans are of his stuff, Yoshida continues, “Removing the numbers is something we’ve discussed. Maybe it’s time. For example, you have Final Fantasy XIV. You have a new player who comes in and says, ‘Wait a minute, why am I going to play Final Fantasy XIV if XVI just came out?’ Why don’t we just call it Final Fantasy Online and remove the title altogether? It’ll be easier to understand.” He’s not wrong, but I’ll be damned if I don’t want to be eighty years old and enjoy the kids trying to order ‘Final Fantasy XLVIII’ in the stores.

Yoshida directed the fourteenth part and has produced this one: although his career is mostly focused on making video games, he has also released three installments of his autobiography ‘Yoshida Uncensored’ and refuses to keep his opinions to himself because, after all, he’s past fifty and horribly doubts he’ll ever touch a single title in the franchise again: “Whether Final Fantasy XVII or XVIII would have to have a number or not, that’s going to be the problem of whoever develops it and whoever is in charge of the brand. That’s their problem, not ours!”. That’s called having charisma by doing evil.

By the way, ‘Final Fantasy XVI’ is coming out on June 22 so we hope you’re ready for the new game of the year of the week after ‘Tears of the Kingdom‘ and before ‘GTA VI’. These are tough years for our gamers’ wallet.

Banned but Unbowed: ‘Final Fantasy XVI’ Creates Stir as Square Enix Defies Censorship

This new installment of the Square saga is giving people something to talk about because it promises to be a game for adults in which we will find drugs, scenes of torture, sex, prostitution, and hate crimes.

There’s a month and a half to go until the release of ‘Final Fantasy XVI’ and, apart from repeating the cycle of every Final Fantasy (fans saying that the previous one was the good one and this one isn’t), this new instalment of Square’s saga is really getting people talking because it promises to be a game for adults in which we’ll find drugs, torture scenes, sex, prostitution and hate crimes. It’s like a crossover between Final Fantasy and ‘GTA‘. However, there is one country that has gone beyond “for adults”: it has erased it from existence.

Square Enix saga returns to the top of the genre

Final fantasy, but final at all

According to ESRB, the US rating system, the voices saying it’s too edgy aren’t lying: there will be moaning in a hotel room, dialogue like “I’d be happy to show you… if you can afford it”, half-exposed asses and breasts, and words like “fuck” and “shit”. OK, yes, we don’t think it’s anything to shout about either, but it was enough to give it an M rating, i.e. recommending that children under 17 stay away from it. PEGI, for its part, has also rated it for 18+.

Of course, the essentials of the game are still there: orcs, magic, swords, fireballs, that sort of thing. After all, it’s still ‘Final Fantasy‘, even if there are suddenly scenes written by a fifteen year old. However, in Saudi Arabia, the company in charge of rating the game has refused to do so and, consequently, the game will not be released and will remain unreleased in the country.

The reason is that Square has steadfastly refused to censor the game and make the necessary modifications to make it look good, so the hardcore fans out there may already be preparing “alternative ways” to get it. Wink, wink. The ratings body hasn’t said exactly what it is that’s been bothering them, but rumour has it that it’s a homosexual couple. Frankly, good for Square. There’s money to be made that isn’t worth stooping for.

This is not the first game to be censored in Saudi Arabia, which has a long tradition of banning experiences for the most bizarre reasons. For example, ‘The last of us II’ had a homosexual couple, ‘Dead rising 2’ had gambling and nudity, ‘God of war’ had religious and sexual content and ‘Spec Ops: The Line’ had a fictional representation of Dubai. There are many others, including ‘Roblox‘ or ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us’, and ‘Final Fantasy XVI’ is just one more on the list.

Not least because Saudi Arabian laws apparently don’t follow censorship enforcement and games end up appearing in shops without anything happening, so fans of Japanese RPGs in the country will probably be able to get their hands on it anyway. The censorship issue is a curious one: for example, no games were banned in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2021, except for one, with the idea of protecting the younger generation from a bad influence. You’re thinking of ‘Manhunt 2’ or ‘Carmageddon’, right? Well, it was PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. What you have to see.
