Gameware and System 3 are in advanced stages of development to relaunch the iconic video game series James Pond, with a sequel titled ‘James Pond and the Rogue AI’. The series, which gained popularity in the 1990s for its parodies and innovative gameplay mechanics, aims to revive the essence of the original while appealing to a new generation of players.

James Bond does not approve of James Pond

However, the most significant obstacle to the relaunch is the opposition from Danjaq LLC, the current owners of the James Bond brand. Danjaq opposed the trademark registration application in the UK, an action that refers to similar failed attempts in 2012. This time, Danjaq argued that parody trademarks are not protected in the UK, unlike US legislation, which complicates the legal situation for Gameware and System 3.

Meanwhile, Chris Sorrell, the original creator of James Pond, has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the new project. He has openly criticized the approach being taken, describing it as “lazily promoted and AI-generated,” and expressing his aversion to almost all the decisions made by the current owners related to the franchise.

The project is set against a backdrop where the video game market is flooded with re-releases and sequels, which has sparked both interest and skepticism among fans and critics. Despite legal difficulties and the lack of support from the original creator, the announcement of ‘James Pond and the Rogue AI’ could spark a debate about the viability of reviving classic works in a landscape dominated by new technologies, where it is speculated that elements generated by artificial intelligence could play a central role in its development.

At Valve, they are interested in the possible uses of AI to develop games

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a topic of interest in video game creation, focusing on its potential to enhance storytelling and character reactions. However, it is not expected that this technology will replace human creative writing, as indicated by Erik Wolpaw, a renowned developer at Valve. In recent statements, Wolpaw has noted that although he has been experimenting with AI, these efforts are independent and are not part of the company’s official policies.

Valve wants to test AI

In a discussion on the MinnMax channel, Wolpaw emphasized that AI, while it can be useful for generating quick responses from non-playable characters (NPCs) based on player interactions, is still far from matching the quality of human writing. “Right now, I’m not worried that AI will replace creative writing because it’s pretty bad at it,” he stated, underscoring that the technology needs more development before being considered serious for screenwriting.

Wolpaw’s vision focuses on AI as a tool that could enrich the gaming experience, encouraging NPCs to react more dynamically during gameplay, as seen in examples of social chaos in titles like Grand Theft Auto. However, his experiments are still in their early stages and have not been implemented in any official Valve project.

At the same time, the gaming community has reacted mixedly to the use of generative AI in video games. While some have expressed rejection, a recent report suggests that most remain neutral on the matter. As large companies like Electronic Arts and Square Enix explore AI as a tool to reduce costs, Wolpaw maintains a clear stance: the use of technology should focus on enhancing the player experience, not on cutting expenses.

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2026, held in San Francisco, has shown a notable shift in industry trends compared to previous years. Unlike GDC 2023, which was marked by multiple sessions and announcements related to blockchain and NFTs, this year has seen a drastic reduction in their presence.

In fact, the only reference to this topic has been a talk about “digital wallets” and a banner from a blockchain company at the event space.

But there will be a lot of AI

In contrast, generative artificial intelligence occupies a prominent place at GDC 2026, with multiple talks and presentations focused on its impact on video game development.Titans of technology like Nvidia and Google are present, and conferences such as “Experiencing AI-Powered Assistants in Games” and “AI Trends Today and Opportunities for Tomorrow” have been scheduled.

However, it is important to note that most industry professionals have a negative perception of its effect on the industry: 52% of respondents believe that generative artificial intelligence is having a negative impact, while only 7% think otherwise.

The conversations in the hallways reflect a strong discontent, with several professionals expressing their rejection of the use of this technology. A game design supervisor in the UK even commented: “I would rather leave the industry than use generative AI.”

Despite this discouraging outlook, some AI-based game developers are seeking to change the narrative, proposing that language models can serve the authorial narrative in a way that resonates with players.

Meanwhile, although blockchain is no longer the predominant trend at GDC, companies like Sony and CCP continue to explore its potential in the gaming world, researching new ways to integrate it into their interactive experiences.

A mod seeks to recreate the lost game of Fallout in Fallout: New Vegas

One of the most interesting news in the video game community is the project The New West, previously known as Revelation Blues, which has gained new momentum following the resurgence of popularity of Fallout: New Vegas, especially after the second season of a related series.

The New West wants to turn New Vegas into what it could never be

The New West seeks to recreate Van Buren, the canceled sequel to Fallout 2 that got stuck in development limbo in 2003. This work has become a kind of lost relic for Fallout fans, who imagine what could have been an RPG that captured the essence of the first two games. With a trailer that evokes the aesthetics and narrative of Van Buren, the project has drawn attention by presenting an antagonist based on artificial intelligence and post-apocalyptic themes.

The music of the trailer, featuring Johnny Cash performing Wayfaring Stranger, adds a nostalgic touch to the experience. Additionally, the game focuses on a prison controlled by an AI named Odysseus and a new scourge affecting the wasteland, elements that promise to keep players on the edge of their seats. Modders have already begun to experiment with ideas from Van Buren, creating mods like Fallout Yesterday, which attempts to revive that missing experience.

As attention grows toward The New West, it’s clear that demand for these classic gaming experiences is still alive and well. Meanwhile, Bethesda remains silent on remasters, which only increases interest in community projects. Fans can follow The New West’s progress on its website and access its demo, which is still available on Nexus Mods.
