The creator of Akira implies that he is working on a new manga: this is all we know

Katsuhiro Otomo, the creator of the legendary Akira manga and anime, has hinted that he is working on a new, still unknown manga

Katsuhiro Otomo is already of a venerable age, but he doesn’t seem to be anywhere close to considering the idea of stopping work. He is someone who greatly enjoys drawing and, without the need to work at a pace other than his own, continues to involve himself in different projects from time to time. That’s why it doesn’t surprise us that on social media, he has dropped one of the biggest bombs of the year for the manga world: the possibility of him working on a new manga.

According to an image he posted on Twitter, he has implied that he is working on a new manga. In it, he has drawn a picture of Kiyoko, the leader of the group of children with psychic powers from Akira, which is not a random choice. Why? Because one of her many abilities is her precognitive powers, the ability to see the future. The drawing is displayed on the message board of the Akira Cel Exhibition in Osaka, which ended on October 24th, focusing on his magnum opus, recently referenced in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Indeed, Otomo didn’t stop there. In the drawing, Kiyoko says, in perfect Japanese, something that could be roughly translated as “I saw in a dream that my friend, a manga author, was drawing a new manga.” Otomo added to his own tweet, stating, “Kiyoko’s precognitive dreams come true.”

In other words, Katsuhiro Otomo is working on a new manga. However, it’s still too early to get excited. We don’t know more details about it, as he has only shared this cryptic yet straightforward announcement that he is working on a new manga. In the meantime, he has been overseeing the anime adaptation of the 2001 manga Orbital Era since 2019. This news is doubly sweet, as, at the age of 69, no one expected to see a new manga from this great master of modern comics.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is causing a sensation due to this reference to that legendary anime movie

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is just around the corner, but it continues to surprise us with its new trailer and the nod it makes to a legendary anime

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is just around the corner. With villains like Sandman, Mr. Negative, and Venom confirmed as antagonists in the story, everything points to this being the biggest and most epic adventure our beloved neighbor Spider-Man has ever had. Especially considering the excellent reception from critics. But before we can start playing it, Insomniac Games released a launch trailer. And with it, people have gone crazy. Not precisely because of Spider-Man or his villains.

The most impactful moment in the trailer is led by Mary Jane. Riding a motorcycle, at one point, she replicates an iconic scene from a famous anime movie. That movie is none other than Akira.

Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo in 1988, adapting his own manga of the same name, it’s a film that, to a large extent, opened the doors to manga and anime for a whole new generation in the West. The reasons were brilliant animation, spectacular action, and incredibly charismatic and interesting characters. This included a motorcycle scene where the protagonist, Kaneda, skidded his 200-horsepower motorcycle in the middle of the highway.

This scene is so iconic that it has been constantly replicated both inside and outside the anime world, almost becoming a cliché. With motorcycles, cars, even horses, performing the “Akira slide” has become very common in fiction. So what makes it impactful? Mary Jane attempts it… and fails.

This simple change makes the scene hilarious, but also memorable. The fact that she nods to it and is instantly recognizable, but quickly turns it into something else, subverting the viewer’s expectations, is what makes it brilliant. And it gives us hope for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. After all, what makes a game great are its small details. If they are all like this, then perhaps we are looking at one of the games of the year.
