Crunchyroll has solidified its position as the largest anime streaming platform, but it faces increasing competition from giants like Netflix and Prime Video, which are forming strategic alliances to capture the attention of anime fans.
In this context, Prime Video has announced that it will be the home of the tenth adaptation of the iconic franchise Ghost in the Shell, a series produced by the renowned studio Science Saru, known for its bold visual proposals. The series will premiere on the platform in July of this year.
Reinventing the classic
The premiere of this new adaptation is scheduled for July 2026, and it promises to mark a significant aesthetic shift from the original 1995 film. With a very bold artistic direction and a brighter color palette than we are used to in this anime, this version seeks to bring the tone closer to the famous manga by Masamune Shirow, as the author himself has indicated when referring to the project, suggesting that it could be considered the beginning of a second generation of the franchise.
Despite being a pillar of cyberpunk and having notably influenced Hollywood works like The Matrix and Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell has navigated complicated waters in recent years.
The 2017 live-action adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson did not meet box office and critical expectations, something that was also reflected in the reception of the series Ghost in the Shell: SAC-2045 released in 2020, which received negative comments. However, the cultural relevance of the saga remains intact, solidifying its status as a timeless classic of anime and science fiction cinema.
With the arrival of this new series on Prime Video, fans hope for a triumphant return to the roots of cyberpunk at a time when competition in the anime market continues to grow.
