“Phantom Liberty” has been a success beyond CD Projekt’s expectations

Phantom Liberty has been a success beyond CD Projekt’s expectations, making the studio’s security with Cyberpunk 2077 grow

CD Projekt seems to turn everything they touch into gold. Whether we like it more or less, whether the outcome is better or worse, the truth is that the sales of all their games have been excellent since they created a little game called “The Witcher.” And that hasn’t changed. Even with the release of Cyberpunk 2077, a game riddled with bugs and far from what was promised, they managed to achieve incredible sales. What wouldn’t they achieve if the game worked well and delivered at least part of what was promised?

CD Projekt has unveiled the sales figures for “Phantom Liberty,” the expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, which, as expected, have been remarkably notable. Especially considering how well the original game performed.

During its first week, Phantom Liberty sold three million copies across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. Now, CD Projekt states that, after two months on the market, the expansion has already sold 4.3 million copies. This has led Adam Kiciński, CEO of CD Projekt, to affirm that it reinforces their plans to continue developing the franchise in the near future.

As Kiciński himself recently explained, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold nearly 25 million copies worldwide since its launch in December 2020. This means that, despite its questionable state upon release and delivering less than promised, it has sold much faster than The Witcher 3 did at its time, making Cyberpunk 2077 a resounding success despite the problems it has faced over time.

This trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. After all, CD Projekt has announced the release of Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition on December 5th, an edition of the game that will include the Phantom Liberty expansion, available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. Therefore, it’s expected that the spectacular sales figures of Cyberpunk 2077 will only continue to grow in the future.

Cyberpunk 2077 had to be a success at all costs, even if it meant costing CD Projekt hundreds of millions

Cyberpunk 2077 is now playable thanks to patch 2.0 and Phantom Liberty, but how much did it cost CD Projekt Red? More than one hundred million dollars.

Money doesn’t solve everything, but it does solve an impressive amount of things. Game studios know this well. There are problems that can’t be solved, no matter how much money is thrown at them, but others just need that: more funds, a larger budget. With that, along with all the creative muscle and personnel that come with it, it’s possible to push forward things that previously seemed impossible. Or that had been an absolute disaster.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DOWNLOAD

Cyberpunk 2077 was an absolute disaster. However, Phantom Liberty feels like its own game. Probably because it is. After all, CD Projekt Red has spent 60 million dollars on its development and another 21 million on marketing for this DLC. That’s approximately half of what it cost to develop Cyberpunk 2077 in the first place, considering the game had a development cost of 174 million dollars. Although not as much if we consider the 142 million dollars they spent on marketing.

This paints a pretty crazy picture of the numbers at CD Projekt Red. Moreover, we have to take into account that the DLC isn’t the only change they’ve made in the game. Since its launch in 2020, they have been working on various updates to fix bugs and add content to get as close as possible to a stable version. This includes their ambitious Patch 2.0, released on September 26 alongside Phantom Liberty for free, which has polished many aspects of the game.

All of this information comes from CD Projekt’s investor presentation, available on YouTube, where they broke down all these numbers. This also gives us other figures, such as the Patch 2.0 costing a staggering 40 million dollars, bringing the total to 121 million dollars to fix Cyberpunk 2077. An absolutely insane figure, even for a game that was already incredibly expensive to develop. But it has turned out this way because, somehow, at CD Projekt, they must believe it’s worth it.

Cyberpunk 2077 now has a Doom clone starring Keanu Reeves… and it’s wonderful

Cyberpunk 2077 has improved noticeably with Phantom Liberty and its 2.0 update, for example, giving us a Doom clone

Few cases of redemption have been as spectacular in recent years as that of Cyberpunk 2077. If the 2.0 update already improved it significantly, with its expansion Phantom Liberty, both critics and the public now see it with the eyes CD Projekt wanted from the beginning: as an excellent RPG with FPS elements. The reason is that, at last, they have paid attention to the details. And one of those details is a tribute as beautiful as it is hilarious.

Cyberpunk 2077 DOWNLOAD

In the 2.0 update of the game, Cyberpunk 2077 included a new arcade machine that allowed you to play a game within the game. Its name is Arasaka Tower 3D. And what is it about? Well, it’s basically a Doom clone, but with Keanu Reeves’ character, Johnny Silverhand, as the protagonist.

This, in addition to being a very cute and amusing tribute, is a nod that solidifies the game’s own narrative. Silverhand is a famous rock musician who caused a stir all over Night City, so it makes sense for him to star in his own video game. But it’s also a nod outside of the video game. After all, Keanu Reeves is a big fan of Doom and iD Software games, so much so that he did the (excellent) soundtrack for the first Quake. This connects a series of charming tributes and nods.

If you want to play Arasaka Tower 3D, it’s quite easy. Besides having the game updated to version 2.0, you’ll need to head to the Badlands region, go south, and look for an abandoned church north of a protein farm. Interestingly, this farm also happens to be a fast travel point, so if you’ve unlocked it, you’ll have an easy time finding the church. Once there, enter the church, and to your right, you’ll find the Arasaka Tower 3D machine.

The game includes five levels, several secret doors, and it doesn’t last more than ten minutes in total, but it’s a fun and charming tribute. So, if you’re a fan of Doom and have returned to Cyberpunk 2077 during its recent resurgence, take the opportunity to venture into the forbidden realms of Arasaka Tower 3D.

Discovering the Gifts of Phantom Liberty: What’s Free in Cyberpunk 2077

The Cyberpunk expansion is just around the corner, promising to bring it closer to everything we were promised the game would be.

The story of “The Ugly Duckling” is highly relevant to the video game industry. The number of video games that initially released as complete disasters or were scorned by the audience, but over time proved themselves as masterpieces or at least decent and enjoyable games, is a much longer list than games that were instant hits. While most of these were misunderstood, some are in this category because they were genuinely bad from the start. Very bad. In fact, one of these games continues on its mission to redeem itself from its shortcomings.

Cyberpunk 2077 was a game that promised us the moon and delivered a river stone at its launch. Right between the eyes. However, this doesn’t negate the fact that CD Projekt Red has been working on it to fix all its bugs, add content, and while it still doesn’t fulfill all its promises, it’s now a better game that can satisfy a certain audience. That’s what it’s aiming for with its first and only DLC.

Revealed during the Opening Night Live of Gamescom 2023, this DLC expansion is called Phantom Liberty. With an explosive trailer full of action, it introduces numerous new customization options along with fresh content. Among the expected features are a new district, dozens of new missions and assignments, combat vehicle weaponry, a revamped police system and enemy AI, dynamic events, redesigned abilities, a new relic skill tree and abilities, an increased level cap, and over 100 new items.

All of this will be coming for free in the game’s 2.0 update. However, there’s a catch. It will only be available for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 5, and PC versions. Those who have the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version won’t be able to enjoy this update.

Scheduled for release on September 26th, this seems to be the grand unveiling for the redemption of Cyberpunk 2077. To become, if not exactly what it promised to be, at least something closer to all those promises.
