Although the company has not officially confirmed these reports, the mere possibility of new content keeps the excitement alive in the fan community. Meanwhile, players have turned to exploring new ways to enjoy the title, one of which is a mod that allows for multiplayer gameplay.

A mod to add online to The Witcher 3

Developed by the creator known as rejuvenate, the mod called Witcher Online is available on NexusMods and provides users with the option to connect with other players and experience the rich narrative of the game in company. To use this mod, it is essential to have a legitimate copy of the latest version (4.04 or higher) of The Witcher 3, accessible through both Steam and GOG. This ensures that players have access to the latest improvements and features of the game.

Witcher Online not only allows the creation of custom characters but also social interaction through a floating chat and various features to relax, such as enjoying moments in a tavern. Although the exact number of players that can join a single map is not clear, the promotional material shows at least five users on screen at the same time, suggesting that the possibilities for socialization are broad.

CD Projekt RED, the renowned Polish studio behind the acclaimed video game series The Witcher, has revealed its ambitious plans for the future. With a team of nearly 450 developers, the studio is currently in the large-scale production phase of The Witcher 4, set to be released between 2027 and 2028. This new title begins a trilogy that is expected to conclude over a period of six years, as CD Projekt has decided to abandon its REDengine graphics engine in favor of Unreal Engine 5, thus seeking to avoid the technical issues that marked the launch of Cyberpunk 2077.

A sequel that will arrive relatively soon

Co-executive director Michal Nowakowski commented on his positive experience working with Unreal Engine 5, stating that this transition will allow the studio to recycle resources and systems between future games, which should speed up development times. “We believe that the next games should be released in a shorter time frame,” Nowakowski noted, emphasizing that his goal is to have a more controlled development time between The Witcher 4 and its sequels.

In parallel, CD Projekt RED is also working on a remake of the first The Witcher, which aims to modernize the narrative and mission design, and which will be released after The Witcher 4. Additionally, the studio is completely rethinking Project Sirius, a cooperative spin-off of The Witcher, following a reboot in 2023.

Regarding the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, currently in pre-production, CD Projekt RED plans to increase its staff from 135 to nearly 400 employees in the coming years, although it is expected that this title will not be released before 2030. With over 35 million copies sold of Cyberpunk 2077, the studio seeks to capitalize on the success of this franchise while advancing its open-world RPG offering.

CD Projekt Red faces the monumental challenge of developing The Witcher 4, a project that comes with the heavy burden of expectations generated by its predecessor, The Witcher 3. Considered by many as one of the best video games in history, this last title has sold over 60 million copies and has raised the standards of storytelling and design in the RPG genre. Thus, the Polish studio must find a way to surpass this masterpiece without losing the essence that captivated a vast community of players.

A game with all the expectations of being the successor to a great game

Philipp Weber, narrative director of the new title, expressed in a recent interview that the team is not obsessed with sales figures or reviews. Instead, their focus is on keeping alive the design philosophy that made The Witcher 3 great. “We want to do justice to the legacy of The Witcher 3 by maintaining that way of thinking: how to create a game, how to care for every detail, how to tell stories,” Weber explained.

However, the challenge is considerable, as fans expect a sequel that, while fresh, respects the universe established by the third installment. Weber admitted the pressure the team feels to meet these expectations, reflecting on how to surpass something that many consider insurmountable. “Many people will love The Witcher 4, and hopefully, they will be the same ones who loved The Witcher 3, because the philosophy remains the same,” the developer commented.

Despite the fact that no concrete details have been revealed about gameplay, story, or release date, CD Projekt Red has a unique opportunity to innovate in the world of The Witcher. The challenge now lies in finding a balance between respect for the legacy and the implementation of new ideas that revitalize the series, ensuring that both veterans and new players find in this title an experience worthy of its predecessor.

Surely when they announced the fourth installment of The Witcher, two thoughts crossed your mind: the first, the joy of being able to continue the saga. The second, the fear that they might mess it up after the fantastic The Witcher 3. Now, CD Projekt RED has launched its marketing campaign for The Witcher 4, although a release date has not yet been announced. The expectations are high and the pressure on the studio is significant. And they know it.

Beware, sorcerer!

Philipp Weber, narrative director of the game, has shared the team’s concerns about whether Ciri’s adventure can surpass the legendary feat of Geralt of Rivia. In an interview with GamesRadar+, Weber admitted that everyone is aware of the challenge of matching or exceeding what was achieved in the previous installment. “How are we going to do it?”, he questioned, emphasizing that the player experience is fundamental and that game design cannot be approached in a purely quantitative manner.

The development approach will focus on maintaining the philosophy that made The Witcher 3 stand out, prioritizing the storytelling of meaningful narratives and immersive experiences. Weber also noted that the game will draw inspiration from titles like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3. Each mission in The Witcher 4 will have a clear narrative purpose, ensuring that players not only explore a vast world but also engage in captivating stories.

Weber, who revealed that his favorite game in the series is The Witcher 1, expressed his desire to ensure that fans feel an emotional connection with the new installment, just as they did with its prequels. “We want some players to really love The Witcher 4, and the studio’s approach will not change”, he stated.

Although there are no confirmations about specific news, it is evident that CD Projekt RED seeks to honor the legacy of the series while introducing new elements that will attract both veterans and new players.

The studio CD Projekt Red, known for its successful title The Witcher 3, has adopted an agile and dynamic approach in the development of its next installment, The Witcher 4. Philipp Weber, the game’s narrative director and former mission designer in the acclaimed RPG, emphasized that the studio’s philosophy is based on generating ideas quickly and iterating on them until the final release of the video game. This methodology has allowed CD Projekt Red to maintain a creative and passionate essence, reinforced by its tendency to hire people who have been modders, like Weber, who began his career by improving previous titles in the saga.

A greater emphasis on the narrative

Weber shared anecdotes about his arrival at the studio, where the team, composed at that time of approximately 160 employees, was characterized by a “scrappy” energy and a relaxed work environment. His first job consisted of putting mission ideas into a Google document, which reinforces the notion that creativity is fostered in a less formal setting. “We do things quickly, effectively, and without much concern for initial perfection,” he assured.

One of Weber’s most notable promises for The Witcher 4 is the elimination of fetch quests, a decision that indicates a significant evolution in the game’s mission design. In light of this, the team is committed to providing a more substantial and immersive narrative for players, likely in response to the criticism received about previous missions that lacked depth.

As CD Projekt Red continues to develop its legacy, the combination of new ideas and a focus on iteration promises to keep expectations high among fans of the series, with the hope that The Witcher 4 will transform gaming experiences, just as its predecessor did.

CD Projekt Red has revealed key details about the development of The Witcher 4, highlighting a renewed approach to game creation. In a recent technical demonstration conducted with Unreal Engine 5, it was shown that the game is being designed with a “console-first” mentality, making its debut on PlayStation 5 instead of PC. This decision responds to lessons learned from past missteps, including the problematic launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which led the company to prioritize the console experience.

CD Projekt wants to ensure that consoles do not have issues with the game

Charles Tremblay, Vice President of Technology at CD Projekt Red, indicated that this new approach aims to avoid the usual problem of scaling graphics from PC to less powerful platforms. “We had so many problems in the past that this time we really want a more console-focused development,” he emphasized. However, the studio’s ambition to deliver 60 fps performance on PS5 will be a significant technical challenge, and considerable effort is required to achieve it.

Jakub Knapik, global art director of CD Projekt Red, also explained that it is “easier to scale up than down” in terms of graphics, suggesting that, despite an initial focus on consoles, there is still room for improvements in the PC version. “Once we establish certain visual and technical foundations, we will be able to scale up,” Knapik mentioned, anticipating the incorporation of advanced features such as ray tracing.

As players await more details about Ciri and the narrative of this new chapter, CD Projekt Red reaffirms its commitment to providing the best possible experience for all players, emphasizing that it is still early to provide specific information about the PC version. The company continues to aim to push technological boundaries, both on consoles and PC, as it moves towards the release of The Witcher 4.

CD Projekt Red has taken a significant step in the development of its upcoming title, The Witcher 4, by switching from its RED Engine to Unreal Engine. This decision, deemed wise by the company, is based on Unreal’s capability as a versatile tool for multiple projects, according to Julian Girbig, senior technical animator at CD Projekt Red. During the State of Unreal showcase, Girbig expressed excitement about the possibilities offered by Unreal, stating that “the process of adapting to the new engine was truly enjoyable.”

A very technical showcase where we didn’t see the game itself

The development team evaluated several engines before opting for Unreal, and the decision was clear upon recognizing the potential of this technology for the future, especially to tackle multiple projects simultaneously. Despite the change, Girbig emphasizes that “nothing has been lost” in the transition, and that the experience gained with the RED Engine in the development of AAA games will be crucial to leverage the advantages of the new engine.

The Witcher 4 promises an impressive visual experience, as seen in the recent technical demonstration, which highlights the region of Kovir. This demo, while captivating, was developed with in-engine capabilities and should not be interpreted as a definitive indication of the final game, as warned by the game director, Sebastian Kalemba. “The demo reflects our ambitions for the game and our capabilities within the engine,” Kalemba stated.

With an environment that captures the essence of a raw medieval world, the advancements in The Witcher 4 include stunning details, such as the anatomy of horses and other distinctive elements of realism in the game. However, it is important to keep expectations at a reasonable level, as the demo is just a first look at the future title of the saga.

The release date for The Witcher 4 has not yet been revealed, but a new demo presented by CD Projekt Red has generated expectations about what players can expect from the title. During Epic’s showcase of Unreal Engine 5.6, a trailer was shown that marks the first time the studio will use this engine, abandoning its previous REDengine, which had been the foundation for the previous installments of the series.

Let’s not be complacent with these graphs

The demo, which runs at 60 fps on a standard PlayStation 5, began with a cinematic trailer showing a cart being attacked by a manticore, followed by a real-time demonstration set in Kovir, a mountainous region that will be a new context for the saga. The story will partially unfold in Kovir and its capital, Lan Exeter, an environment that promises to significantly differ from the previous locations explored in the series’ games.

One of the most notable features of the demo is the improvement in interaction with NPCs and a new animation system, which aims to create a more immersive environment. Unreal technology allows for more than 300 animated characters to appear on screen simultaneously, which raises the level of realism in interactions within the game. In this sense, Ciri was shown interacting with a vendor, causing some apples to fall to the ground, illustrating how the game’s animations will be more fluid and natural.

Despite the impressive technical features, Sebastian Kalemba, the game’s director, advised moderating expectations about the final appearance of the game. It is important to remember that The Witcher 3 faced criticism for a graphical downgrade after its release, which invites consideration of the demo not as an indication of the final product, but as an aspirational representation of the ideas that will guide its development.

This announcement comes in a context of great expectation, as the company embarks on a new chapter in the iconic saga, so any information that arises could be crucial for the franchise’s followers.

It will appear at an event during the Summer Game Fest

The State of Unreal event, which is part of Unreal Fest, will start at 3:30 PM, Spanish mainland time, and will be streamed live on YouTube and Twitch. In this context, CD Projekt Red has indicated that it will reveal “innovative technologies and features that will drive The Witcher 4 and beyond.” The presence at this event also marks a significant shift in the company’s development philosophy, as, after a multi-year agreement with Epic Games, the Polish company will use Unreal development tools instead of its own RedEngine, which had been used in previous installments.

One of the main innovations that will be presented in The Witcher 4 is the change in the narrative, based on Ciri’s perspective, in contrast to the original trilogy that focused on Geralt. This approach promises to offer a fresh and novel experience for players. However, it is expected that the release will not be available in the near future, as a six-year release window has been anticipated for the upcoming sequels, The Witcher 5 and 6.

The Witcher 4 faces the challenge of surpassing the acclaimed The Witcher 3, which has sold over 60 million copies and generated revenues exceeding 600 million dollars, positioning itself as one of the 10 best-selling video games in history. Fans will surely be on the lookout for updates revealed at the event on June 3 and what this means for the future of the saga.

Although it has not released new titles in recent years, the gaming community remains eager. During The Game Awards 2024, the first trailer for the game was presented, which has increased interest among fans, even though an imminent release is not expected.

A game that they are already enjoying in the office

Neil Druckmann, director of the game and head of Naughty Dog, revealed in a recent interview that the team is already playing an internal version of it, and expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “I will say that we are playing it in the office and it is incredible. It is really good,” Druckmann commented, suggesting that what has been shown so far is just “the tip of the iceberg.” This new title will focus on faith and religion in a fictional world called Sempiria, where the protagonist, Jordan, will uncover intriguing secrets.

The project has more than 250 people working to develop an ambitious narrative, reflecting the magnitude of the effort that Naughty Dog is putting into this game. However, it has been indicated that Intergalactic will not be released in either 2025 or 2026. According to journalist Jason Schreier, the game could take several more years, while other titles like The Witcher 4 could arrive in 2027.

Additionally, Druckmann has hinted that it is possible fans may never see a third installment of The Last of Us, which opens the door to speculation about the future of the studio and its franchises.
