The 7 cancelled Netflix series that hurt us the most in 2024

Sometimes it’s challenging to be a Netflix original series: most of them extend far beyond what is advisable due to their popularity.

Netflix is the most powerful streaming service in the world, both in terms of the number of subscribers and the number of releases. Unfortunately, for every new series and every new movie, there are adventures that are cut short. The new era of streaming equals cancellations.

Netflix has become the undisputed champion of creating incredible original programs… only to cruelly cancel them before they have the chance to truly shine, resulting in some shows that have ended too soon.

Sometimes it’s challenging to be a Netflix original series: most of them extend far beyond what is advisable due to their popularity, like Stranger Things or Big Mouth, or they get canceled too soon.

And the rest of the series, those that don’t enjoy the love of the entire audience, are canceled at the end of the first or second season, saying goodbye to a story that had a lot of potential ahead.

Whatever the reason, some of Netflix’s most beloved series have suffered truly devastating cancellations. And today, we review them:

The seven canceled Netflix series that hurt us the most in 2024

Archive 81

While Black Mirror dominates Netflix’s anthology horror space, Archive 81 had a promising start that could have invaded the territory of the science fiction franchise if given time to breathe.

The first season focuses on a tortured film restorer who discovers something sinister in the footage he is commissioned to resurrect, hinting at a larger and more twisted plot that promises to drag viewers into a web of intrigue and disaster. Unfortunately, the second season, which was set to expand on Archive 81’s dark story, never aired due to lack of audience.

Santa Clarita Diet

Santa Clarita Diet, which marked the triumphant return of Drew Barrymore, an icon of horror comedy, told the story of an affluent real estate agent who becomes an undead cannibal forced to feed on human flesh.

Wonderfully silly, with a bloody sense of humor and standout performances from Timothy Olyphant, Liv Hewson, and Skyler Gisondo, Santa Clarita Diet was charming and disgusting in equal parts, in the best possible sense. Despite it being evident that there was much more to explore, Netflix cruelly pulled the plug on the series to the dismay of its devoted fans.

Warrior Nun

“Warrior Nun” provided Netflix with a pathway into a modern supernatural story, following an orphaned teenager who wakes up in a morgue to discover she has incredible powers, destined to be the latest in a long line of demon-hunting nuns.

While the first season of the series was uneven, receiving mixed reviews, the second season marked a notable improvement, refining the chemistry of its cast and fight choreography to be a worthy spiritual successor to clear inspirations like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sadly, “Warrior Nun” was one of the casualties of Netflix’s wave of cancellations.

Sense8

“Sense8”, another atmospheric supernatural mystery that found its way onto Netflix, features an eclectic group of eight strangers who discover they are psychically connected, making sense of their powers while being pursued by a mysterious organization.

Directed by the renowned Wachowski sisters, the series captivated audiences, invoking the best elements of mystery shows like Lost and gradually constructing its own narrative. Although it was canceled after two seasons, Netflix at least allowed the Wachowskis to craft a feature-length finale that served as a definitive conclusion.

I Am Not Okay With This

Based on a graphic novel of the same name, “I Am Not Okay With This” tells the story of Sydney Novak, a girl who discovers she has latent telekinetic powers.

Compared to other high-concept original series that Netflix has created and canceled over the years, “I Am Not Okay With This” is a relatively realistic high school drama, with Sydney’s powers being the only supernatural element. Another great series that said goodbye too soon.

Mindhunter

The cancellation of “Mindhunter,” one of the most tense and compelling police dramas ever aired on the small screen, was a painful moment. “Mindhunter,” largely produced by David Fincher, was inspired by real events and depicted the efforts of a fearless FBI agent to interview incarcerated serial killers to understand, and possibly prevent, their horrific crimes.

Beyond the morbid fascination of its premise, “Mindhunter” captivated viewers with the atmospheric period drama of its incredibly realistic characters, making its unceremonious cancellation a true pity.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Puppets are an underrated and endangered form of art in the age of content mills in modern entertainment, but “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” aimed to change that. Reviving Jim Henson’s 80s classic, “The Dark Crystal,” the hypnotically whimsical series sees the return of the heroic Gelflings fighting for good against the efforts of the evil Skeksis.

Despite the charm of its adorable practical creatures and its mesmerizing story, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” failed to impress Netflix executives enough to secure a second season.

The five most anticipated series on Amazon Prime Video this 2024

In this article, we will review all the series that Prime Video is going to release during 2024. Will we see the highly anticipated God of War series this year?

It seems that this week is the toughest in years for Amazon Prime Video. We say this, obviously, due to the announcement of hundreds of layoffs in its film and television division. Just when they were about to introduce ads on their platform.

Amazon Prime Video DOWNLOAD

But let’s focus on the fact that 2024 has just begun and that means new series are coming to our streaming services, because platforms thrive on having new content every week. It sounds exhausting, but that’s how it is.

In this article we are going to review all the series that Prime Video is going to premiere during 2024. Some of them have already been featured in this magazine before, as they have been highly anticipated by fans for years.

Without further ado, here are the five most anticipated series by Amazon customers that will premiere this year. Five may seem like a few, so let’s add an extra series.

The 5 most anticipated series on Prime Video in 2024

Mr. and Mrs. Smith (February 2nd)

Adaptation of the unbearable movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie of the same name, Mr. and Mrs. Smith seems to adapt quite freely from its source material. The show stars Donald Glover (also a producer of the series) and Maya Erskine as a pair of agents who go undercover as a married couple.

The protagonists will face a new mission every week, leaving room for the inclusion of fabulous guest stars like Paul Dano, Ron Perlman, and Michaela Coel only in the first season.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, season 2

Set thousands of years before the events of the beloved films we all know and love, The Rings of Power could be the most high-profile series in the history of Amazon Prime Video, and it should return for its second season in 2024. The series concluded its first season by revealing who Sauron is and giving us an idea of how Mordor was created.

And the Middle Earth of The Rings of Power is not the one we all know, but it is rapidly transforming into it. Although it is impossible to know what the second season of The Rings of Power has in store for us, fans are eager to find out.

Invincible, Season 2 (Part 2)

Invincible offered fans half of its second season in 2023, and the other half will premiere in 2024. Although it is not a superhero series for children, Invincible is the kind of self-aware series that has attracted millions of viewers to Jeff Bezos’ platform.

The series, which is an adaptation of a popular comic of the same name and premiered in 2021, has suffered some delays in production for its second season. It can be safely stated that the second season of the series will conclude next year, although the schedule for a possible third season is still up in the air.

Fallout (April 12th)

Adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name, Fallout follows a refugee survivor of a nuclear apocalypse who ventures into a world transformed into a wasteland populated by mutants, scavengers, and other potential dangers.

Developed by the creators of Westworld, a project led by a team with a wide range of different television experiences, Fallout aims to replicate the model established by The Last of Us in 2023. Will it be successful? Only time will tell.

Hazbin Hotel (January 19th)

Hazbin Hotel, a high-quality animated musical series that already has a consolidated audience, is a workplace sitcom set in a hotel for damned souls living in hell.

Although it may sound like a rather heavy concept, the series proves to be remarkably light on its feet, especially considering the musical elements of its premise.

With a cast of voices that includes many heavyweight talents from Broadway, as well as an infinitely creative team of writers who are always looking for new and inventive ideas, there is a reason why Hazbin Hotel has become a sort of cult phenomenon.

The best Star Wars series will have a second season: long live Ahsoka!

Lucasfilm’s comments suggest that the development is still in its early stages, so it’s likely that there won’t be more news until within…

We are in luck, at least all Star Wars fans. In a time where everything gets canceled and projects don’t come to fruition, Disney has the artillery ready to give us a lot of series and movies in 2024.

Disney+ DOWNLOAD

Lucasfilm has officially confirmed that the second season of Ahsoka is being developed by Dave Filoni, protege of George Lucas and co-creator of Ahsoka Tano.

The Ahsoka Disney+ television series was a success for the streaming service and played a crucial role in the development plans of the Mandalorian era. It introduced Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, the main villain of this part of the Star Wars timeline.

What do we know about Ahsoka, season 2

Lucasfilm has finally confirmed that Dave Filoni is working on the second season of Ahsoka. The first season of Ahsoka ended with Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) trapped in a distant galaxy, on the planet Peridea.

The second season of Ahsoka will presumably take place alongside The Mandalorian and Grogu, confirmed as the next Star Wars movie.

For months there has been speculation about the second season of Ahsoka, and it was Rosario Dawson herself who confirmed that she had no news. It’s exciting to finally have confirmation that it’s underway, and it’s clear that she will play an important role in Lucasfilm’s ongoing story.

The end of the first season of Ahsoka revealed that the mysterious planet Peridea is somehow linked to the Mortis gods, cosmic avatars that represent aspects of the Force.

Lucasfilm’s comments suggest that development is still in its early stages, so it’s likely that there won’t be any more news for some time.

Disney+ DOWNLOAD

Meanwhile, the story of this era will continue in The Mandalorian & Grogu, a movie that will bring to the big screen Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and his beloved apprentice Grogu. Characters like Grand Admiral Thrawn may appear in it before Ahsoka in the second season.

Golden Globes 2024: quick summary with all the winning movies

“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s epic about the nuclear era and its unlikely global success, won the latest award at the 2024 Golden Globes.

The prelude to the Oscars, as the Golden Globes have always been known, took place last night. Smiling faces, red carpets, lots of press, and a bunch of awards. 2023 begins to receive the well-deserved awards for a brilliant year on the small and big screen.

This puts the film in an even stronger position as the Oscar voting begins this week, but it’s not the only film with a lot to celebrate.

Poor Things won two important awards, including Best Cinematic Comedy and Best Actress for its protagonist, Emma Stone. The Holdovers received two acting awards for its protagonists Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

And perhaps the most surprising double winner of the night was Anatomy of a Fall, the French film that won the award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as Best Screenplay for director Justine Triet and her screenwriter and husband, Arthur Harrari.

The Last of Us has just been crowned as the best series of 2023 thanks to the Emmy Awards

The Last of Us was awarded the prize for Best Guest Actor and Actress in a Dramatic Series, given to Nick Offerman and Storm Reid.

The Last of Us, The White Lotus, and The Bear emerged as the big winners at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday night.

The Last of Us, from HBO, was by far the big winner, with eight victories. The Bear from FX, Netflix Wednesdays, and The White Lotus from HBO each won four.

The winner was HBO and its series The Last of Us

The Last of Us was awarded the Best Guest Actor and Actress in a Drama Series by Nick Offerman and Storm Reid, respectively. The series also won in the categories of visual effects, image editing, sound editing, and other key categories.

Judith Light won the award for Best Guest Actress for Poker Face, while “Ted Lasso” favorite Sam Richardson took home the award for Best Guest Actor in a comedy.

The Roku channel prevailed over more established competitors and took home the award for the telefilm “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”. The real Yankovic was present to accept the trophy, expressing shared feelings by other winners about the importance of embracing one’s true self.

By the way, the 2023 Emmy Awards have been delayed three months due to labor conflicts in Hollywood last year. That is, the strikes by screenwriters and actors.

The best science fiction series and movies coming in 2024.

Apple TV+, Netflix, and other streaming services have bet on producing Sci-Fi series that will be released throughout the year. This compilation is…

In recent years, the science fiction genre has been reborn as if it were the 80s and 90s, when the film industry had a blast releasing dystopian and action-packed adventures. This 2024 promises to be memorable in that regard.

AppleTV+ DOWNLOAD

Apple TV+, Netflix and other streaming services have decided to produce Sci-Fi series that will be released throughout the year. And let’s not forget about the movies that will also hit the theaters in these 12 months.

Since the arrival of artificial intelligence, our vision of the future has slightly transformed. Fortunately, directors and screenwriters look beyond AI when imagining those dystopian worlds of tomorrow.

Without further ado, let’s go with the 2024 releases in science fiction, whether they are series or movies.

Murderbot (Apple TV)

By now we all know that Apple TV+ has a predilection for dystopias and science fiction. And here’s another bold series. Based on an award-winning series of novels titled The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, the story follows a security android who is horrified and fascinated by human emotions.

Perhaps the most attractive aspect of this series is its cast. Alexander Skarsgård will be the protagonist of Murderbot, and we can’t think of a better actor to play a cold and calculating android who learns to understand human emotions.

Dune: Prophecy (Max)

Originally titled Sisterhood of Dune, this complementary television series to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies has undergone a troubled development process in recent years.

The series is set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert’s Dune. It explores the origins of the legendary brotherhood of superhumans from the novels, the Bene Gesserit.

The series is co-produced by Frank Herbert’s son, Brian, and his granddaughter, Kim, along with experienced television writer Alison Schapker (Fringe, Lost, Westworld). Villeneuve was unable to direct due to scheduling conflicts, but the series’ style will surely follow the incredible scale and scope of the films.

Constellation (Apple TV+)

Someone at Apple is a big fan of science fiction, as the thriving streamer continues to produce ambitious and interesting genre shows (Foundation, For All Mankind, Silo, Invasion).

The latest one, which will be released in February, is Constellation. Starring Noomi Rapace, all we know so far is the brief synopsis that states that the series is about “an astronaut who returns to Earth after a space disaster, only to discover that key pieces of her life seem to have disappeared”.

If you’re into conspiracy thriller science fiction, this could be the winning movie.

Alien (FX)

The Alien franchise is about to explode with new movies and series this year, but the most promising title is a television prequel from writer Noah Hawley (Legion, Fargo).

The series will be the first Alien story set on Earth, exploring the origins of androids and the mysterious Weyland-Yutani corporation.

How do the “aliens” enter the story? Who knows, but Hawley has proven to be a surprising and creative writer, so this will undoubtedly be the most interesting entry in the franchise we have seen in a long time.

Civil War (A24)

From Ex Machina to Annihilation, through Devs, Alex Garland has been doing truly innovative and original things, but Civil War seems to be his biggest project to date.

Described as an action and war film, it is set in the near future where the United States has entered into a civil war after an authoritarian government takes power and half of the country decides to separate.

With a terrifyingly premonitory look, this movie will generate a lot of talk when it is released. Garland knows what he’s doing, we expect a great film.

The Electric State (Netflix)

Since the Russo brothers made Avengers: Endgame, the highest-grossing film of all time, they have been stumbling. Will this trend continue or have they found new inspiration in a 2018 graphic novel that has received good reviews?

The story is simple. It is an alternative post-apocalyptic timeline of 1997 and a teenager travels through dystopian USA with her toy robot.

There is no doubt that Netflix has spent a fortune on this movie, so it is sure to look impressive. Let’s hope there is a decent story to support it.

David Fincher wants to revive the best series ever released on Netflix

Will we see a third season of Mindhunter? We can’t confirm it, but what is clear is that there is intention and willingness from some parties. This is what…

For me, Mindhunter is the best series ever released on Netflix. It’s smart, intense, brilliantly directed and acted. And the plot is amazing. Unfortunately, after season two, news about the series stopped coming.

Netflix DOWNLOAD

Last February, in an interview with Le Journal Du Dimance, David Fincher confirmed, to the dismay of everyone, that Mindhunter would not be renewed for a third season. And the blame was on Netflix.

“I am very proud of the first two seasons. But it is a particularly expensive series and, in Netflix’s eyes, we have not attracted a large enough audience to justify such an investment. I don’t blame them, they took risks to launch the series, they gave me the means to make the movie of my dreams, Mank, and they allowed me to venture into new paths with The Killer,” he explained.

Now, one of the protagonists of Mindhunter, Holt McCallany, through Awards Daily, mocks the possibility of Fincher completely discarding the return of Mindhunter to Netflix.

“I’ve heard that David has thought about it. I’m not saying he’s going to come back. But what I’m saying is that if he does come back, I’ll come back with him. You can be sure, but it will depend on what David wants to do […] The mere fact that he has considered it is a hopeful sign,” commented the actor.

What is Mindhunter about and why you should watch it

Mindhunter focuses on agents Holden Ford, Bill Tench, and psychologist Dr. Wendy Carr, who delve into the intricacies and minds of some of the worst killers in history, in order to create a profile on how to identify serial killers.

Enigmatic, creative, intriguing, sharp, and overflowing with Fincher’s DNA, Mindhunter has become a cult series in recent years. There have even been petitions from fans circulating to convince Netflix/Fincher to bring it back.

Fincher directed the first three episodes of the second season, Andrew Dominik and Carl Franklin shared the direction of the other six.

Netflix DOWNLOAD

Will we see a third season of Mindhunter? We cannot confirm it, what is clear is that there is intention and willingness from some parties. The decision will be up to Netflix, as always, since they are the ones who provide the funding.

The big change coming to TV in 2024 because of video games

Although in previous years, we had some successes like the Castlevania animated series and The Witcher, it was in 2023 when series such as The Last of Us..

If I had to choose one series from 2023, I think I would choose HBO’s adaptation of the video game The Last of Us. The series, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, is a work of art that captivated us. Now the rest of the services want to replicate, by any means, this phenomenon.

HBO Max DOWNLOAD

And I wouldn’t have believed this if someone had told me 10 years ago that the best TV shows and movies I would watch in 2023 would be adaptations of video games. And yet, here we are.

It has been a slow and exhausting journey, filled with casualties and deaths along the way. And now it seems that the code has been cracked. Now video game adaptations are not just good, they are excellent.

Although in previous years we had some successes, such as the animated series Castlevania and The Witcher series, it was in 2023 when series like The Last of Us from HBO showed the world that, if understood and handled correctly, these adaptations could be on par with any other prestigious production.

Repackaging games for cinema and television is the equivalent of 80s and 90s cartoons made exclusively to sell toys. I don’t want to sound too cynical, but from a corporate perspective, they are funded with the intention of turning a new audience into players.

And we have seen compelling evidence that, when it works, it is very effective. Even a game as dragged through the mud as Cyberpunk 2077 experienced a huge increase in sales after the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, even before the full 2.0 version and the Phantom Liberty DLC were released. The same can be said for older titles like The Last of Us, Mario, and The Witcher.

At this point, games have been adapting for decades and have never caused such massive waves of new players, so what has changed? The most obvious evolution is the increase in quality.

Series like The Last of Us perfectly capture the spirit of the original game without directly translating it. The series changed, reoriented, expanded, and condensed the original story with confidence, while remaining faithful to the central themes of the game. This is important not only for the games to work in a new medium, but also for these movies and series to serve as a low-risk entry point for new players.

With the amount of games available, even gamers have to be selective when choosing where to invest their time and money. A TV series or a movie is a perfect method to offer a wide audience a way to get an idea of what a game offers without having to spend a large amount of money upfront.

Just as sequels tend to be more popular because the audience is familiar and comfortable with an IP, returning from an adaptation to the original material is a natural and effective move.

Now that companies have witnessed the success of a high-quality adaptation in turning viewers into players, there is no way to put the genie back in the bottle.

A 2024 full of adaptations

This 2024 is going to be very important for video game adaptations and will consolidate them as a fundamental pillar of their commercialization. As for cinema, we will have the third Sonic The Hedgehog movie and Borderlands. Fallout, Tomb Raider, and even a second season of Halo are about to arrive on television.

Not to mention the dozens of projects that are yet to come, including Sony’s big hits in the form of a Horizon series for Netflix, a God of War series for Amazon Prime and a Ghost of Tsushima movie, as well as new seasons of Twisted Metal and The Last of Us.

Sony is not the only company that is betting heavily on adaptations. Nintendo also leveraged its biggest IP to achieve great success with The Super Mario Bros Movie. It was the tenth animated feature film in history to gross over one billion dollars worldwide, and it also boosted franchise sales.

The purchase of Dynamo Pictures, now Nintendo Pictures, and the announcement of a Zelda movie demonstrate that Nintendo is betting on a multimedia future, although we may not see all the results of that push until one or two years from now.

As long as examples of well-received adaptations continue to channel the audience towards games, this new form of marketing will not disappear. Series that receive Emmy nominations and emerge from the gaming sector, what a beautiful 2024 awaits us.
