In an interview with Ebony, Coogler commented: I never think about that. I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a while, so I wanted to get out of that. I was eager to work on a film that felt original and personal to me and that had an appetite to offer something that was unique.” His goal was to present a film that felt like a “full course meal,” with narratives that spanned from appetizers to desserts, to create a holistic cinematic experience.

The protagonist of the movie, Michael B. Jordan, expressed his interest in participating in a possible prequel that explores the past of his characters, Smoke and Stack. However, he made it clear that the decision depends on Coogler: “I’m always… I would be willing,” he stated in an interview. “I’m not saying that he [Coogler] wouldn’t do it, but he makes the decisions.”

Sinners, set in the 1930s during the Jim Crow era in the southern United States, follows twins Smoke and Stack as they return to their hometown, where they hoped to restart their troubled lives. Upon returning, they encounter an even greater evil that has taken control of their old home. Coogler has mentioned that his intention was always to create a complete narrative, as if there were a world before and after the story presented.
