Splinter Cell is not dead, just on a break

Splinter Cell: Blacklist, originally released in August 2013, is the latest main title in the stealth series that has made a mark in the video game industry. In December 2021, Ubisoft announced a remake of the original installment, which has sparked interest among fans. This project is being developed by Ubisoft Toronto, which previously worked on Blacklist and Far Cry 6. With the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Splinter Cell in 2022, the company revealed some details about the remake, including concept art and new AI behaviors for enemies, although since then, communication has been scarce.

In the realm of the Splinter Cell universe expansion, several projects were announced that did not come to fruition. A virtual reality title was canceled in 2022, but an audio series with eight episodes was released that same year. On the other hand, a movie based on the franchise that could have featured Tom Hardy as Sam Fisher was also canceled. However, fans can look forward to a series titled Splinter Cell: Deathwatch on Netflix, where Liev Schreiber will voice the iconic character instead of Michael Ironside.

Ubisoft has confirmed that in its upcoming release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, enemies will not become mere damage sponges. Instead, the artificial intelligence of opponents will be significantly improved, adapting to players’ tactics. At higher difficulties, enemies are expected to actively seek out the player, forcing them to continuously change their gameplay strategy.

Options for all kinds of users

The game will offer specific difficulty settings for both stealth and combat. The options will include a mode for instant kills, allowing players to choose how they want to approach missions. However, players who opt for expert difficulty will face an added challenge: in this setting, rooftops will not be a safe haven. This means that players will have to seek less conventional routes and use the environment more strategically to avoid being detected.

The content shared by JorRaptor showcases a stealth approach reminiscent of the Splinter Cell series, rather than the traditional Assassin’s Creed style. Players will need to take advantage of the architectural environment and adopt more cautious stances, such as becoming a bit more invisible by going to the ground, to evade the gaze of the game’s more intelligent enemies.

Ubisoft is paying attention to different play styles, as evidenced by a recent video showing Yasuke using a heavy blow to fight instead of resorting to stealth. This suggests that players will be able to choose a more aggressive combat style or a more discreet one, thus encompassing a wide range of experiences for everyone diving into this new title.

In addition, Ubisoft has released a roadmap that includes downloadable content and future developments for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, promising a gaming experience that will expand over time.

Josef Fares wants to win another GOTY with Split Fiction, but he knows why it's not possible and it has a proper name

Josef Fares, director of Split Fiction and founder of Hazelight Studios, has expressed his desire to win the Game of the Year award again in 2025, after having won it in 2021 with his successful title It Takes Two. However, Fares is aware of the intense competition he will face, especially if Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) is released this year, one of the most anticipated titles in video game history.

In a recent video from Fall Damage, where he responds to comments on YouTube, Fares commented on the possibility of Split Fiction being named Game of the Year, although he also mentioned the admiration he feels for the GTA franchise. “It would be amazing to win again, but if GTA 6 comes out, it will be a big challenge. I’m excited for its release because I’m a huge fan,” Fares stated.

A game with exceptional reception from critics and the public

At this moment, Split Fiction is presented as the highest-rated game of 2025, with an impressive Metascore of 91, surpassing other acclaimed titles like Monster Hunter Wilds and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. However, the reaction from the public and critics will largely depend on the impact of GTA 6, which is expected to be the market leader if it is finally released in the fall, as planned.

Although GTA 6 is scheduled for this year, Strauss Zelnick, director of Take-Two, has mentioned the possibility of adjustments to the release date, noting that “there is always the risk of delay.” This leaves the door open for Split Fiction to have the opportunity to shine if GTA 6 does not meet its schedule.

On the other hand, Fares suggested that Ubisoft should consider creating a cooperative Splinter Cell game, arguing that they should not limit themselves to offering only single-player experiences. “Don’t regret making a cooperative game; just go for a split-screen game,” Fares advised, emphasizing the need to innovate in the cooperative space.

Did you know there was going to be a Splinter Cell movie? Neither did we, and now it's canceled

There are more and more adaptations of video games to film and television. Now some even turn out well. That’s why it’s surprising when we hear about adaptations that don’t succeed. It seems to be a sweet moment in the relationship between these two media, and it’s hard to think that things could go wrong. There are more and more adaptations of video games to film and television. Now some even turn out well. That’s why it’s surprising when we hear about adaptations that don’t come to fruition. It seems to be a sweet moment in the relationship between these two media, and it’s hard to think that things could go wrong. At least, not when we’re talking about projects that have been in development for over ten years and we didn’t even remember they existed.

When neither the money nor the script manage to be in place

That is the case with the movie of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. This adaptation was confirmed to be in development in 2012 and was going to have Tom Hardy play Sam Fisher. It was also going to be written by Eric Warren Singer, screenwriter of Top Gun: Maverick, and directed by Doug Liman, director of Edge of Tomorrow. This means it was announced at the same time as the Assassin’s Creed movie, which came out in 2016 and was an absolute disaster. And since then, we haven’t heard anything.

According to Basil Iwanyk, producer of John Wick and at one point producer of the Splinter Cell movie, the film is now dead, as he mentioned to The Direct. Although he says the movie would have been great, they couldn’t make it work in terms of script or budget.

Although it is not a surprise, because we haven’t heard about the game in over a decade, it is still a shame. But if you are eager for Sam Fisher, at least we know that Ubisoft is working with Netflix on an animated series featuring the famous spy. Hopefully, this will lead to a resurrection of the character. And his video games.
