It has been more than ten years since the release of a new game in the Splinter Cell saga, and almost four years since Ubisoft announced a remake of the original title. Will we see her at the end?

Derek Kolstad, the showrunner of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch and creator of the iconic John Wick series, has expressed his desire for the series to be integrated as part of the video game canon. Kolstad revealed that Ubisoft has “other plans” for the franchise, although details about those plans remain shrouded in mystery. “They have a firm grip on their intellectual property because they own some of the best titles”, Kolstad commented during an interview with IGN. However, the future of new games remains uncertain, especially after unmet expectations from a promising announcement by Ubisoft before this year’s Summer Game Fest.

The lack of updates on Splinter Cell games has led some to question Ubisoft’s ability to effectively revive its franchises. The prolonged wait for the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has raised doubts about the company’s commitment to managing these releases in a timely manner. Referring to the development of the original game, the director of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory noted that creating this title was “very difficult” and emphasized how these challenges led Ubisoft to improve in future productions.

The future of the Splinter Cell saga seems to depend on a mix of projects across different media, although fans continue to long for the return of Sam Fisher to the world of video games. Over time, the hope that he will soon return to interactive action persists.

Decades after starting its journey in video games and following many rumors of bringing it to film, Splinter Cell will, for now, have an animated series. Splinter Cell: Deathwatch was officially announced at the prestigious Annecy Animation Festival, an event that brings together the best talents in the film and television industry. This project, which was previously presented during the Geeked Week in September, marks a significant milestone for the franchise, which is part of Netflix’s catalog.

Splinter Tudum

Developed by Ubisoft’s TV and Film Division and co-produced by Æsten and Fost Animation studios, Deathwatch aims to explore the elements that have determined the success of the Splinter Cell universe. The series will delve into a raw realism approach, a hallmark that has defined the game saga over the years. This approach also promises to attract both lifelong fans and new viewers who want to discover the world of espionage and tactical action.

The Splinter Cell franchise, which was first launched in 2002, has been praised for its immersive narrative and strategic gameplay. It has been characterized by its intricate level design and tense atmosphere that immerses players in a stealth and espionage experience. With Deathwatch, the producers seem ready to honor these elements while expanding the story into an animated format.

As the project progresses, fans and critics remain eager for more details about the plot and character development. While the teaser and the preview shown exclusively at Annecy have generated great interest in the community, it is expected that the series will use already known characters and introduce new factions within the Splinter Cell universe, thus raising the anticipation surrounding its premiere. For now, Ubisoft and Netflix have not revealed a specific release date, but anticipation continues to grow.
