Highguard could be on the verge of closure after the dismissal of more than half of its development studio

Wildlight Entertainment, the developer behind the recent video game Highguard, has laid off several team members less than a month after its release. This decision has raised concerns about the game’s reception and its success in the market. In a statement, the company reported that it made this incredibly difficult decision to restructure its team, retaining a core group of developers who will be responsible for continuing the innovation and support of the game.

A game overwhelmed by circumstances

Although Highguard has been presented as the company’s first release and has seen its launch in a competitive environment, the layoffs raise questions about its sales and critical performance. While the reasons behind the decision have not been officially stated, analysts suggest that it could be closely related to the reception of the video game in the gamer community. It is common for companies to review their staff after the launch of a product, especially if the market response has not been as expected.

Wildlight Entertainment has expressed its commitment to quality and continuous development, suggesting that the focus is on improving Highguard and possibly developing future updates or expansions. The company has reaffirmed its intention to maintain an innovative and long-term vision, despite the cuts to its team. The situation also opens the door to rumors about a possible broader restructuring of the company, at a time when competitiveness in the video game industry is fierce.

For the moment, Highguard remains active on gaming platforms, and the community is eager to see how the game will develop under the leadership of the small group of developers that has stayed with the company.

The creators of Highguard acknowledge that they may not have marketed the game correctly

Highguard, the new competitive shooter presented at The Game Awards 2025, has not had the most successful launch. With a disappointing approval rating of 42% on Steam, based on over 35,000 reviews, the title has been criticized for its generic nature, sparking a debate about its future in the industry. Highguard, the new competitive shooter presented at The Game Awards 2025, has not had the most successful launch. With a disappointing approval rating of 42% on Steam, based on over 35,000 reviews, the title has been criticized for its generic nature, sparking a debate about its future in the industry. Dusty Welch, CEO of Wildlight Entertainment, acknowledged in a recent interview that the trailer was not well received and reflected on the game’s presentation at the gala.

A game with potential, but poor marketing

Although the Wildlight Entertainment team hoped that Highguard would be a “shadow drop,” Geoff Keighley, the awards organizer, convinced the team to showcase the game in a traditional manner at the event. Welch continues to question whether this decision was the right one. “Was that the right way? Was there another different way? To this day, I still don’t know the answer,” he commented during the interview, suggesting that the way the game was presented may have affected its reception.

Despite the criticism, Welch shows remarkable optimism, expressing his desire to take Highguard to esports events and expand its narrative. “We hope it will be big enough for players to want more narrative, more story,” he added. This approach highlights his intention to learn from experience and to be open to both positive and negative feedback, which are essential in video game development.

The current situation of Highguard raises questions about how marketing decisions can influence long-term success. Welch emphasizes the importance of taking risks and being open to feedback, which could become an important case study in the world of video game development. While the criticism continues, the future of the game remains uncertain, but Wildlight Entertainment’s ambition is evident.

Highguard may not be well-received on Steam, but its developers say they are not going to throw in the towel

Highguard, the PvP shooting game from Wildlight Entertainment, has been the subject of intense debate since its recent launch, especially following its announcement at The Game Awards 2025. Despite reaching nearly 100,000 simultaneous players, the reception of the title has been rather negative, with only 30% positive ratings on Steam. This discontent among players has created an atmosphere of uncertainty in the community, highlighting unfavorable comparisons with other shooters like Overwatch and the short-lived Concord. Highguard, the PvP shooting game from Wildlight Entertainment, has been the subject of intense debate since its recent launch, especially following its announcement at The Game Awards 2025. Despite reaching nearly 100,000 simultaneous players, the reception of the title has been rather negative, with only 30% positive reviews on Steam. This discontent among players has created an atmosphere of uncertainty in the community, highlighting unfavorable comparisons with other shooters like Overwatch and the short-lived Concord.

A team determined to show what they can do

Chad Grenier, co-founder and game director, has defended Highguard by pointing out that comparisons do not capture the essence of the gameplay it offers. In his opinion, the combination of three-player team combat, territory control, and a strategic progression structure makes for a unique proposition within the genre. However, Grenier also acknowledged that the initial trailer, which generated high expectations, did not reflect the game’s strengths and was made with little preparation time.

Despite the initial criticism, Wildlight Entertainment is committed to improving the gaming experience through constant updates and a full year of planned content. Dusty Welch, co-founder and CEO, has expressed his determination to maintain player interest, emphasizing that the game is free, which removes the barrier to entry and allows new users to try it without commitment.

Currently, although the number of players has decreased since its launch, the game maintains around 11,000 concurrent users on PC. Despite the lukewarm reception it has received, both Welch and Grenier have stated that their team has no plans to abandon the project and are determined to build a franchise that lasts over time.
