Make Your Words Musical: Google’s AI Brings Text to Life with Music

A research team at Google has created an artificial intelligence that is capable of generating musical pieces from a written description. As if that were not enough, you can also transform a hum into melodies played by different instruments.

This artificial intelligence follows a process very similar to that of other tools such as ChatGPT or Stable Diffusion, which use a description or “prompt” to be able to generate images or texts. The model that concerns us today is called MusicLM and although we still can’t prove it for ourselves, we can appreciate some of the results that Google itself has uploaded.

MusicLM, the ChatGPT of music

The examples we can hear are pretty impressive. The fragments have a short duration (30 seconds) and first of all, they can pass for real songs, even for the most expert ears. The melodies are recreated from specific descriptions, where we can choose from the genre to the instruments. To make matters worse, MusicLM can generate pieces with descriptions as brief as “melodic techno”.

Another of MusicLM’s features is that it can “Mix” between different descriptions, in order to create more complex songs. As an example, the AI was able to generate this audio based on this description: “electronic song in a video game (0:00-0:15), meditation song by a river (0:15-0:30), fire (0:30-0:45), fireworks (0:45- 0:60)”.

Additional details that indicate the time help MusicLM build a foundation for these “artificial songs”. As with other generative models, MusicLM benefits from a huge database of sounds and audios, which help it “train” itself to improve.

MusicLM is even capable of simulating human voices, although their quality is still questionable. And if you ask them to sing in any language, it gets even worse. The feeling when listening to these voices from the digital underworld is that they pretend to sound like English, but to no avail.

Despite Google’s advances in the field of AI, the truth is that the company is not doing very well in the public eye. Tech giants like Microsoft and now OpenAI are overtaking Google in artificial intelligence. In fact, Google recently issued a “code red” to its employees to get them to step up their game against the threat of tools such as ChatGPT. Will Google manage to recover its position in the AI race?

Forspoken: Transform Your Outfit with the Best Necklace and Cape

We teach you to go better equipped in the lands of Athia.

Beyond the criticisms received, Forspoken is working among players. It is not the title that was expected by far, but it is not the disaster that was predicted after playing its demo. Here at Softonic we are giving it a hard time, hence this post: we tell you how to get the best necklace and the best cape of the game.

Best necklace and best cape

As you will know if you are playing the game, both necklaces and capes allow you to improve your character’s stats. They are the armors of any other game, but here brought in another more original and different way (along with painting your nails, which also seems to us another very nice move).

In the specific case of Forspoken, both the best necklace, Sweet Hell, and the best cape, Indestructible, are linked to the same patterns. To begin with, it is necessary to collect a total of 64 ancient coins. These coins, which are part of the game’s collectibles, are scattered all over the world, both in chests and in completely open places. You need to get all of them to get to the cape and necklace, so take your time.

Once you finish this arduous task, you have to go to the Bell Tower of Inner Visoria. Take a good look at the mountains and explore their slopes. The terrain is totally inhospitable and empty, so you can easily spot a hut. Go inside and talk to the merchant behind the counter.

Of all the items it offers you to buy, the one that interests you to get the equipment is the last one, the one called “Sewing box“. As you can see, it costs 64 old coins, so if you have been able to get all of them, you will get it immediately.

When you have it in your possession, go to the workbench and use it. In the “Craft” tab you will now have a list of new items, including both the cape and the new necklace. From here, the rest is as simple as collecting the nine items we need to create both items, which are actually three multiplied (X3 Flute, X3 Water Galamperna and X3 Translucent Outcropping). You need nine for the cape and nine for the necklace.

They are not difficult to achieve, so most likely you already have them because you have been collecting them as you have explored the map. And if you haven’t done it, then it’s up to you to go through the areas you haven’t visited yet, you’ll be amazed with the statistics!

Google Chrome is experiencing significant difficulties with cloud storage

Multiple reports indicate that Google Chrome is encountering difficulties saving files directly to network attached storage (NAS) drives and cloud backups. In January 2023, a bug report showed that the 32-bit Windows version of Chrome 109 was encountering a “can’t open this file” error when trying to save files with a universal naming convention (UNC) path. The error stated that the problem was that the save destination folder contained system files.

Google Chrome DOWNLOAd

Another report confirmed the issue while trying to open a Dropbox file on the Arm64 version of Chrome 109 on macOS. Testing bug demo code revealed that the problem persisted. The Register also noticed that other browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge, which are based on Chromium technology, were able to save files to network locations without any issues.

The root cause of the problem lies in the showOpenFilePicker() method in Google’s File System Access API. This API, introduced in 2019 as part of Project Fugu, aims to give web apps access to local files and directories. The project intends to grant web apps similar permissions as native platform apps, following Apple’s tendency to limit its Webkit-based Safari browser due to security concerns.

Google Chrome is experiencing significant difficulties with cloud storage

However, you’re not stuck with Safari. Alternative privacy-focused browsers have been accessible on Apple devices for a while. With the release of iOS 14 in September 2020, users have had the ability to set a different default browser than Safari. Therefore, Project Fugu appears to be a way for users to bypass Apple’s strict control over the apps they allow on their devices, despite pushback from the European Union.

According to The Register, Google has prioritized fixing the issue with the release of the stable version of Chrome 110 on January 31, 2023. An engineer from the company was quoted as saying that “blocking UNC paths broke a number of legitimate use cases.”

Dead Space remake vs. Callisto Protocol – What went wrong?

After shutting down Visceral Studios, the team responsible for the original experience, EA has released a remake of the classic cult horror Dead Space. The Dead Space remake has a few similarities in style and tone to another horror released recently, The Callisto Protocol. However, where The Callisto Protocol failed miserably as a game, the Dead Space remake has once again proven what gamers have known to be true since 2008 – Dead Space is the way to make a horror game that works.

Dead Space DOWNLOAD

This article will explore the triumphs and story of the new Dead Space remake, compared to the abundant shortcomings of The Callisto Protocol. We’ll try to determine what is wrong with the latter, and why the former represents the perfect formula for this genre of gaming.

Dead Space just works

Dead Space (2023) is a visually enhanced version of the original game from 2008. It’s designed for next-generation consoles and PC and features improved graphics, from the tentacles on the spaceship to the details on Isaac Clarke’s suit. However, the remake also deviates slightly from the 2011 sequel with new details.

This updated version is not a complete reimagining like Resident Evil 2 or Final Fantasy VII Remake, nor is it a user-friendly makeover of a classic game like the System Shock remake. It’s simply a strong update to a great game, released at an opportune time.

Dead Space remake Vs. Callisto Protocol

The Dead Space franchise is a third-person shooter series that is defined by its unique twist on the typical zombie gameplay. Instead of simply shooting the grotesque creatures known as necromorphs in the head, players must strategically sever their limbs in order to defeat them. The game combines horror elements with a combat system that feels like gruesome surgery and features weapons based on power tools, telekinetic powers, and a time-slowing ability called stasis.

The Dead Space remake, like the original game, is set on a mining spaceship called the USG Ishimura, which has gone silent after a mission to a distant planet. Engineer Isaac Clarke boards the ship to repair it and locate his missing girlfriend, Dr. Nicole Brennan.

Instead, Isaac and his team are met with challenges, including a necromorph outbreak, a sabotage operation and their own deteriorating mental states. Isaac discovers that the outbreak was caused by an alien artifact brought on board the ship and that a religious cult, the Church of Unitology, may be involved in spreading it.

Dead Space remake Vs. Callisto Protocol

The Dead Space remake offers the best gaming experience the franchise has ever had. Motive has taken the best elements of the first and second games and combined them to create a polished and improved version. The game also includes a few changes to some of the less enjoyable encounters, making them feel more engaging and less repetitive.

The game maintains the methodical pace of the original while incorporating suspenseful elements, such as sudden blackouts and enemy jump scares, without relying on heavily scripted sequences or quick time events. Dead Space is a horror game that players can enjoy mastering, rather than simply being a passive participant within.

The Callisto Protocol is filled with alien-zombie-like creatures too. But the experience falls flat on too many levels to be considered a compelling example of the gory and gritty horror genre.

Why The Callisto Protocol fails

Upon its release, the game had performance issues on PC, which were resolved quickly with a patch. However, the console versions also experienced frame rate issues and crashes, but developers have announced that further improvements are in the works. The Xbox Series X version was praised for its beautiful ray-traced shadows, but the ray-traced reflections were not as impressive. The developers are working to improve this aspect of the game and more information will be released soon.

Dead Space remake Vs. Callisto Protocol

The Dead Space remake has received mixed reviews, with some praising its graphics and sound design while others have criticized the game’s performance issues on certain platforms. Despite these issues, the game has also received praise for its death animations and overall presentation when running smoothly.

Additionally, it has been noted that the PS5 version of the game runs well, likely due to the involvement of 150 people from PlayStation Malaysia and PlayStation Visual Arts Studio Group. It is speculated that there may be a partnership between Sony and the game’s developer, Striking Distance.

The design of the game’s environment receives a lot of praise, but many players find that the levels are too straightforward and feel like a series of corridors leading to the next objective. The objectives themselves are often simple and involve going from one point to another, finding and replacing fuses, and opening cases for health items.

While the concept of a sci-fi prison overrun by mutated creatures sounds exciting, the story itself is not particularly noteworthy. The majority of the more intriguing plot points are revealed in the latter half of the game, and the final encounter with a mutated version of Leon Ferris is underwhelming and occurs just minutes before the end of the game.

Dead Space remake Vs. Callisto Protocol

We hyped this game up quite a bit last year. I remember writing numerous articles about what we expected the game to be like, and what the trailer suggested it would be like. But all of those articles feel like a lie now that we’ve experienced the game first-hand. There’s no getting away from the fact that the developer, publisher, and everyone involved in the various teams was under a lot of pressure, something the team has commented on openly.

You can almost feel the conflict and how it’s resulted in a game that feels doesn’t feel finished, yet drags on as you make your way from one corridor to the next. With the modern standard of gaming being what it is, this simply doesn’t feel acceptable.

Hopefully, there’s a significant update in the game’s future somewhere or at least a remake planned that will fix all of the glaring performance and gameplay issues. For now, though, The Callisto Protocol, a great concept executed poorly, stands as an example of what happens when a team is not operating cohesively.

By comparison, the Dead Space remake is everything great about the gaming industry, and the horror genre rolled into one gory gritty package. The game packs a massive punch. The only punch The Callisto Protocol packs is delivered to your device hardware in the form of painful lag and tragic crashes.

Robots replacing reality TV hosts in Milf Manor

MILF Manor is a reality TV program begging to be discussed and analyzed on the internet. The show’s title and setup of mothers and their sons competing in the same dating pool is so outrageous, it borders on being normal. The contestants are even asked to participate in a blindfolded contest to identify their sons by their abs alone. However, it looks like robots are now coming into play.

Robots replacing reality tv hosts milf manor

One of the most interesting aspects of the show is the absence of a traditional host. Instead, the contestants receive alerts and directions via text messages on iPhones provided by the producers. In a trend noticed on other reality TV shows, there’s no actual human host.

The Circle, a show on Netflix, set off the trend in 2020. The show consists of contestants who compete to create the most popular social media presence while living in isolation. They receive tasks and challenges through television in their living quarters. A more recent show on Netflix called Pressure Cooker, takes this concept a step further by replacing the host with a kitchen printer that sends out challenges and voting results.

The Button, a YouTube series produced by Cut, takes it even further by featuring a large talking button that provides comedic prompts and awkward questions for the daters until one of them presses it, signalling the end of the date and bringing in a new match.

The removal of the host role in these shows may be a cost-saving measure as reality TV competition shows are known for being budget-friendly to produce. Additionally, it could be that the role of reality TV host is not as attractive to high-profile figures as it once was. In the past, well-known personalities such as Tyra Banks, Mario Lopez, and Donald Trump were frequently seen as hosts, but this is no longer the case.

Robots replacing reality tv hosts milf manor

This trend could also indicate a shift in the way audiences view reality TV, and the need for a host figure may not be seen as important or necessary in the current climate.

Even though these examples above are far more benign than AI controlling a group of humans in a reality show, this trend may speak to a dystopian future where that could actually happen. Or, a future where AI and robots take over the entertainment industry entirely. We’ve already seen AI, like Microsoft’s controversial Tay, break into the social media entertainment space.

Netflix Is Wrong! It HAS Canceled Plenty Of Successful Shows

If your favorite show was hastily canceled by Netflix, then consider it to have been a downright failure! Well, that is what Netflix wants us to believe and said in the latest mystifying interview with Bloomberg. Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-CEOs, made a lot of odd statements but at the top of the list was probably this one from Ted Sarandos:

“We have never canceled a successful show. A lot of these shows were well-intended but talk to a very small audience on a very big budget. The key to it is you have to be able to talk to a small audience on a small budget and a large audience on a large budget. If you do that well, you can do that forever.”

Netflix DOWNLOAD

For Netflix subscribers, however, there are issues with this statement, and many are outraged by such bollocks.

The big question everyone is speculating about is how on earth Netflix is even measuring the success of a show. Their formula appears to be focused on seasonal completion and hours watched measured up against budget. But come on! Where is their loyalty to the fanbase they have built up?

Instead of establishing review scores and important IP, they are stocking their library with a bunch of dead-end series. If budget is taken into account, then there are plenty of examples making this statement difficult to stomach, such as The Babysitters Club, I Am Not Okay With This, or Teenage Bounty Hunters just to mention a few!

Another questionable point I wonder about is if a Netflix series ‘failed’ how much is Netflix at fault here? Many subscribers who had to experience the loss of their favorite series noticed the lack of any notable promotion; therefore, it makes sense why it never got the attention it deserved.

Netflix Is Wrong! It HAS Canceled Plenty Of Successful Shows

Ah yes, the personification of an in-the-moment intriguing episode where the front-runner gets a series, and it lights up the billboard on our Netflix screen with soaring review scores only to be replaced within minutes by another fly-by-night that will eventually be canceled because Netflix can’t seem to tick all their perfect metric boxes!

Let me share some of the ludicrous statements co-CEO Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters made throughout the interview and decide for yourself if they are on the right track or not:

Ted Sarandos: “This meme of, I can’t find things on Netflix … I mean, hundreds and hundreds of stars that did not have a career before Netflix did because they were found on Netflix.”

Greg Peters: “We’re just getting started to make Squid Game not an unusual thing, but something that happens every week.”

Ted Sarandos: “Can you build a big business without [intellectual property] and without a library? We just did.”

Good to you, Sarandos and Peters, for sharing your confidence in your business, but your message seems to be delivered poorly to the major concerns Netflix subscribers have and many are just waiting to see what 2023 will bring to the table.

LEGO Batman 4 and LEGO Mandalorian DLC: It’s time to Be Excited!

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of a new title within the LEGO gaming franchise. These games are widely beloved for their accessibility to players of all ages and their unique and entertaining adaptations of beloved franchises such as Marvel, DC, Star Wars, and many others. And now, there’s news on new LEGO Batman 4 and LEGO Mandalorian DLC.

LEGO Batman 3 DOWNLOAD

Previous games in the series have received positive reviews, and while they all share a similar formula, it has been refined over time to include more depth and complexity. This allows for more nuanced gameplay and a wider range of activities beyond simply breaking LEGO figures.

According to recent reports, TT Games, the developer behind the LEGO Star Wars series, is working on two new projects, LEGO Batman 4 and DLC for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, based on the popular television series The Mandalorian. These projects have yet to be officially confirmed, but a former employee of the company appeared to confirm the authenticity of the information in a now-deleted tweet.

LEGO Batman 4 and LEGO Mandalorian DLC

The comment also stated that the developer has canceled a number of other projects, including a LEGO Disney game. Fans are excited to see the combat in these games evolve further, as seen in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and hope that these projects will bring more depth and complexity to the gameplay.

The last main entry in the LEGO Batman series was released in 2014, and while a spin-off centered around DC supervillains was released in 2018, there has been a significant gap between games in the series. The rumored development of LEGO Batman 4, as reported by PlayStation Lifestyle, is not yet confirmed by TT Games, the developer behind the series, and should be taken as a rumor until official confirmation is made.

Given the gap between games, it is likely that the release date for LEGO Batman 4, if it is in development, will be a few years away.

Google launches Osmo: an AI to predict new smells

Osmo, a subsidiary of Google Research, has developed complex software that is capable of predicting the odors of molecules.

You may have read the title and think that this artificial intelligence thing is getting out of hand. Despite what it may seem, we have been living with AIs that make life much easier for us for longer than we think, without knowing it. Since when do you use Google? Have you asked Alexa what the weather has been? These are just a few examples of AIs, which, while still impressive, are far from belonging to the world of “Blade Runner”.

With the democratization of tools like Midjourney or ChatGPT, AIs have become very popular because many of us were unaware of how far their potential could go. We have always liked to dream of futuristic and dystopian worlds, with super-intelligent robots capable of everything and more. However, everything stops being so much fun when reality surpasses fiction.

This is the case of Osmo, a subsidiary of Google Research that has set out to take artificial intelligence one step further. Alex Wiltschko, PhD in neurobiology and specialist in olfactory neuroscience, has developed complex software that is capable of predicting the odors of molecules. Yes, just as you hear it (or read it, rather).

Osmo is the name of his startup, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States. Financed, among others, by Lux Capital and Google Ventures, the company aspires to create new scents that will be part of our daily lives (shampoos, candles, creams, etc).

The difficult livelihood of the odor industry

The fragrance industry is one of the most buoyant industries in existence today and is valued at approximately $30 billion. Although it is not as well known as other industries, scents are so integrated into our lives that we don’t even stop to think about them. However, nothing is immune to the effects of the crisis and global pollution.

In the case of odors, this is particularly aggravating. The supply of flowers is increasingly endangered by climate change and the existence of some species has already been threatened. While companies are already able to reproduce some odors artificially, there are still many where this is not possible. Wiltschko, CEO of Osmo, explains that there is “a huge opportunity to create safe, sustainable and renewable ingredients that do not require living organisms“.

To do this, the company wants to equip computers with smell and digitize odors. The sense of smell is not yet as studied as other senses, partly because it is also one of the most complex. The Osmo team worked tirelessly to recreate what is now a map of odors, which would then be used to classify them at the molecular level. During this process, an artificial intelligence was required to carry out this task.

For the AI to do its job well, it was supplied with data on up to 5,000 odor molecules. From this, it recreated a hierarchy of odors based on their characteristics. However, they still have a long way to go, full of unknowns: will they be safe, will they pollute more or less than the current system?

On the other hand, the company has not yet addressed how they would go about bringing smells to the digital world. In fact Wiltschko himself is aware of this and believes it will be several years before we see tangible results.
