10 best video game worlds

From the streets of Los Santos to the vampires and dragons of Skyrim, these worlds are a home away from home.

Mario 64

From underwater dystopias to snow-covered castles and tropical jungles, video games can take us places beyond our wildest dreams. While interesting characters and an intriguing plot are certainly important, oftentimes a game’s setting is what sticks with players long after they put down the controller. Here, we’re counting down 10 of the most iconic and unforgettable worlds in gaming history.

10 best video game locations

10. The City- “Mirror’s Edge”

mirror's edge city

This futuristic sci-fi dystopia is a collection of clean lines and polished edges. Despite the City’s clean, shiny exterior it has a seedy underbelly that’s totally at odds with what lies on the surface.

Part of what makes The City such a distinctive location is the contrast of bright primary colors against a white backdrop. This creates some striking and unique visuals while also guiding players in their high-stakes freeruns.

The intricacies and unique visual styles of each district will make players want to return over and over again.

9. Talos Station- “Prey”

prey talos station

Talos Station is the orbital headquarters of the Transtar Corporation, a futuristic conglomerate with their hands in everything from genetic modification to heavy industry and space travel. It stands to reason that their corporate headquarters is a lavish monument to their power.

Combining a distinctly 60s aesthetic with the sci-fi stylings of a space station, walking through the halls of Talos will make players feel like Don Draper in space. That is, of course, if they can stay alive long enough against the extraterrestrial beings that have slaughtered the station’s inhabitants.

8. Libertalia- “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End”

libertalia uncharted 4 a thief's end

Much of the fourth Uncharted title is spent pursuing the location of the legendary pirate haven known as Libertalia. When players finally manage to lay eyes on this mythical location, the breathtaking vistas make the hunt more than worthwhile.

There’s something rather poignant about seeing the once vibrant pirate town decaying and empty, slowly being overtaken by jungle plants. The crumbling wooden buildings and decrepit stone mansions of the pirate lords have an almost supernatural effect that will have players yearning for a return to the freedom-filled golden age of swashbucklers and rogues.

7. Milky Way Galaxy- “Mass Effect Trilogy”

mass effect 2 citadel

Making an entire galaxy into a memorable setting is no small feat, but Mass Effect does so with ease. With hundreds of planets to explore, each world has its own distinctive feeling and setting. From the seedy underworlds of Omega to the stalwart spires of the Citadel, each world has its own unique flavor that soon makes a massive galaxy feel like home.

With unique alien races and rich lore to provide a backdrop to these sci-fi worlds, players will want to return to the world of Mass Effect over and over again.

6. New Hanover- “Red Dead Redemption 2”

red dead redemption 2 new hanover

Though the world of the original Red Dead Redemption was groundbreaking in its own right, Red Dead Redemption 2 took that world to the next level. Set in America at the turn of the century, players are able to explore a huge map filled with fictional analogs to real-life locations in the United States. Players can wade through the humid swamps of Lemoyne or brave the howling winds and peaks of the Grizzlies.

They can also head to bustling modern metropolises like Saint Denis or rough and tumble frontier towns like Armadillo. Every corner of the world feels fully realized and full of life. Players could explore for hours and still not come close to experiencing everything the world of Red Dead 2 has to offer.

5. Mojave Wastes- “Fallout: New Vegas”

Set in an alternate timeline where the world fell to ruin after a catastrophic nuclear war, the survivors emerged hundreds of years later to rebuild society. Fallout New Vegas is set among the scorching deserts of the American southwest, and particularly the area surrounding the ruins of Las Vegas.

Now called New Vegas, the city is a neon-lit reimagining of a post-apocalyptic gambler’s paradise. The contrast of glitzy casinos and crumbling bombed-out buildings offers a truly unique visual, and the wasteland ruins surrounding New Vegas are filled with secrets and plenty of opportunity for adventure as well.

4. Hyrule- “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”

legend of zelda breath of the wild hyrule

Though gamers have been visiting the mythical kingdom of Hyrule for quite some time now, Breath of the Wild showcased this familiar world in a way that has never been seen before.

The entire kingdom is open for players to explore in any way they so choose. Though the game’s plot is certainly riveting, wandering through the lush forests and verdant fields of the game world is a huge part of what made Breath of the Wild into an instant classic.

3. Los Santos- “Grand Theft Auto V”

grand theft auto v los santos

Los Santos is a fictionalized version of the real-life Los Angeles, but as per usual with Rockstar, the fictionalized city is just as full of life as its real-world counterpart. Players can explore the sun-drenched metropolis in the game’s superb campaign or take to the streets in online mode to make a living as the next big criminal kingpin.

Whether it’s bombing down streets in exotic supercars or navigating backcountry roads on a dirtbike, the world of Los Santos offers endless hours of fun and mayhem for any wannabe crime lord. Now if only we knew something about the world in Grand Theft Auto VI.

2. Rapture- “Bioshock”

When Rapture was first introduced to the gaming world 12 years ago, it left an instant impression on the mind of every gamer.

This underwater metropolis was the brainchild of unscrupulous industrialist Andrew Ryan. He envisioned a hyper-capitalist society free of the bounds of the surface world and put his vast fortune to use building this art deco city beneath the frigid waters of the North Atlantic.

Unfortunately, this vision of an Ayn Rand inspired paradise soon fell to pieces after Rapture’s inhabitants lost their minds as the result of an experimental genetic modification technology. Exploring the twisted remnants of this blood-spattered, luxurious paradise provided some haunting moments and chilling settings that made an indelible mark on the gaming world.

1. Skyrim- “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim”

Experiencing the rich fantasy world of Skyrim is probably as close as most people will come to living out an episode of “Game of Thrones.”

Accompanied by Jeremy Soule’s epic soundtrack, players can fight dragons, wizards, and bandits among the bleak and beautiful snow-covered peaks of Skyrim. Whether saving a town from vampires or honing their magic skills at the College of Winterhold, the province of Skyrim provides almost infinite opportunities for adventure and exploration.

These are the 10 best moments of the Star Wars prequel trilogy

From Pod Racing to Lightsaber duels, there was a lot to love about the Star Wars prequels!

Star Wars

At best, most people have… mixed opinions about the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Admittedly, there’s a lot to dislike: cheesy acting, writing that left a lot to be desired, and of course, Jar Jar Binks.

That said, the prequels added quite a lot of depth and richness to the Star Wars universe, and had their fair share of undeniably iconic moments and characters. Love them or hate them, here are the 10 best moments of the Star Wars prequels.

The 10 best moments of the Star Wars prequel trilogy

10. All General Grievous scenes

star wars episode 3 general grievous

First appearing in Episode III, General Grievous is the intimidating leader of the Separatist Droid army. Grievous is a masterclass in character design: despite having comparatively little screentime, he still left an indelible mark in the minds of every Star Wars fan. From his deadly looking exoskeleton to his gravelly, vaguely Russian accent, Grievous is admittedly a pretty cool villain. The coolest part? He’s got four arms, which he uses to wield the captured lightsabers of the Jedi he’s killed.

This makes for some creative and heart-pounding fight choreography that upgrades Grievous from a run-of-the-mill villain to a formidable foe.

9. Showing us the Jedi Council

star wars prequels jedi council

Until the prequels, all any Star Wars fan really knew about the Jedi Order was gleaned from the stories and hints about them from the original trilogy. The prequels showed fans the Jedi up close and personal, detailing exactly how the Order functioned.

This included never-before-seen Jedi, the tenets of the Order itself, and a look inside the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. One of the best parts of this up-close look at the Jedi was getting to see the Jedi Council in session: the wisest and most powerful members of the Jedi Order, putting their heads together in a spectacular council chamber to decide the fate of the galaxy.

8. The Coruscant space battle

star wars revenge of the sith space battle

Episode III gave Star Wars fans one heck of a space battle. The movie opens with a tense dogfight above Coruscant, with massive capital ships and tenacious fighters going at it on an epic scale.

VFX technology made battles like this possible on a scale that would have been impossible for the original trilogy. This allowed George Lucas to finally realize the grand scope of his vision for the Star Wars universe.

The battle is quite a spectacle to behold, and also includes some clever hints at where the space technology of the original trilogy came from: the fighters and capital ships have a definite resemblance to TIE fighters, X-Wings, and Star Destroyers.

7. Order 66

star wars order 66

One of the prequel trilogy’s most spine-chilling moments comes in the form of Order 66. This hidden command is given to the Clone Army by Emperor Palpatine himself, causing them to turn on their Jedi Masters. Even though viewers already know the Jedi are all but wiped out by the time of the original trilogy, it’s still goosebump-inducing seeing it actually happen.

The sequence takes the form of a montage showing the Jedi that fans have come to know and love over the course of several movies brutally murdered by the troopers they know and trust. The Order 66 sequence is essentially an opportunity for fans to watch the rise of the Empire in real time.

6. Battle of Geonosis

star wars geonosis battle attack of the clones

The massive land battle on Geonosis is not only an epic battle sequence but also a groundbreaking showcase of visual effects technology.

Pretty much all of the sequence is digitally created, and yet it still holds up against a lot of modern CG. From the dynamic lighting to the sheer number of soldiers on the field to the destruction of the fleeing capital ships, it’s easily one of the best parts of Episode II.

5. Yoda

star wars prequels yoda

By the time fans meet Yoda in the original trilogy, he’s already reached his twilight years. Yoda in his prime is a far cry from the somewhat absent-minded, doddering mentor of Luke Skywalker. Yoda is a formidable fighter and the infinitely wise leader of the Jedi Order.

Whether pondering events from the council chamber or taking on opponents with his lightsaber, getting to see Yoda at the height of his powers is truly awesome to behold.

4. Mustafar Duel

star wars revenge of the sith mustafar duel

From the fiery backdrop to John Williams’ score to the mind-numbingly fast fight choreography, the duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan on Mustafar is cited by fans far and wide as one of the best moments of the prequels. This duel is essentially the moment that the prequels were leading up to: Anakin’s final descent to the dark side and his rise to power as Darth Vader.

Watching Obi-Wan land the final blow on his old friend and former Padawan and witnessing the horrific burn scars that lead to Anakin being encased in Darth Vader’s armor are probably some of the most heartwrenching moments of the Star Wars series.

3. Pod Racing

star wars phantom menace podracing

Young Anakin got his start as a Pod Racer on Tatooine. This unique sport is dangerous, high-stakes, and infinitely entertaining to watch. Like a lot of the prequel trilogy’s visual effects, the Pod Racing sequences still stand up against modern movies.

It’s also undeniable that the fanbase loved Pod Racing just as much as Anakin did. It has since spawned several video-game adaptations and has become a central fixture in the Star Wars universe.

2. Darth Maul

star wars phantom menace darth maul

What’s not to like about Darth Maul? Though he’s a man of few words, this Sith assassin is known for his trademark double-bladed lightsaber and terrifying facial features that were inspired by the Devil himself.

Even after his (apparent) end in Episode I, Maul has since returned in several Star Wars spin-offs and most recently in a cameo role for “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” We wouldn’t be at all displeased if we got to see more of Maul in the future.

1. Palpatine

star wars revenge of the sith palpatine

Before he was the cloaked embodiment of evil and head of the Galactic Empire, Palpatine was a seemingly mild-mannered Senator from Naboo. Seeing Palpatine’s origins played to perfection by Ian McDiarmid is an absolute delight, and fleshes out the character of Darth Sidious as more than just a villainous caricature.

Of particular note is a moment he shares with Anakin at the opera, telling him the Sith legend of Darth Plagueis. It becomes painfully easy to see how Palpatine was able to sway Anakin to the dark side and solidifies his status as one of the most sinister characters of all time.

Wrapping up

It is undeniable that the Star Wars prequels had their fair share of missteps, but they also had their fair share of iconic moments as well. If you’re ready to give the prequels a second chance, check out Softonic’s Where2Watch site to start streaming right now.

GTA Online is finally getting a casino

Gambling minigames are coming to Grand Theft Auto Online!

GTA V

Grand Theft Auto Online players have been clamoring for a casino ever since the game hit shelves several years ago. The empty casino building, present in the game since launch, has been taunting players with the promises of high stakes gambling for some time. Now, it appears that the vacant casino is finally about to come to life, with Rockstar teasing the addition of a glitzy and glamorous gambling paradise in a forthcoming update to GTA Online.

GTA Online is finally getting a casino

In late June, Rockstar took to Twitter to tease the forthcoming Diamond Casino & Resort. According to Rockstar, the casino will be “a brand-new luxury destination and the largest mass entertainment complex of its kind in Southern San Andreas.”

Aside from this tantalizing teaser, Rockstar hasn’t offered much in the way of specifics when it comes to gameplay or actual features. That said, Rockstar is no stranger to gambling minigames. Red Dead Redemption players will know that classic casino staples like Blackjack, Poker, and a variety of dice games are all present in the single-player campaign.

In addition, Red Dead Online recently introduced multiplayer poker tables to the game world. It seems like a safe bet that players will see similar games in Grand Theft Auto’s casino as well. Rockstar has also teased something called “spinning the Lucky Wheel.” While we don’t know exactly what this entails, it seems to indicate a suitably high stakes roulette game. We’re envisioning vast sums of money, cars, and even property as potential prizes.

Aside from the standard slate of casino games, some data miners have reportedly found hints in the game files that indicate horse racing may also be added in the casino update. That would make sense, as the casino just so happens to be located next to a fully equipped horse racing track. In addition to betting, Rockstar has stated that the casino will include high-end luxury shopping and hotel rooms, valet parking, as well as a selection of bars and lounges. Rockstar seems on track to bring a taste of Vegas directly to the world of GTA Online.

Despite the announcement, much about the casino still remains uncertain. Rockstar has yet to announce an official release date for the update but has stated the casino will open before the summer is over. That’s still quite a large window, as summer doesn’t officially end until Sept. 23. Despite the lack of a release date, data miners have again delved into the game files to find that updates will be slowly rolling out over time:

Interested players should stop by the in-game casino from time to time to watch the progress on the construction as the building nears opening. Based on these hints, it seems likely that the appearance of the building itself will be receiving a massive overhaul.

We also have yet to receive news about any other content included with the update, such as outfits, vehicles, and other casino-themed items. Knowing Rockstar, however, these items will doubtless be coming out alongside the release of the full update. If Rockstar follows the pattern, players can also expect to see cash rewards and other in-game bonuses in the lead-up to the casino’s launch.

GTA Online players can check back with Softonic for more casino news as it gets revealed, as well as other updates on GTA Online and the forthcoming GTA 6.

What to watch after Stranger Things 3

Need something to hold you over until Stranger Things 4? Check out these shows and movies!

Stranger THings

Clocking in with just 8 episodes, “Stranger Things 3” came to an end depressingly quickly. If you’ve already finished your binge but aren’t yet ready to say goodbye to the world of weird science, pre-teen adventurers, gruesome creatures, and Russian agents, check out this list! It consists of shows and movies to watch after you’ve finished up with the spectacular third season of Stranger Things.

What to watch after Stranger Things 3

The Goonies

the goonies stranger things

This one might be a bit obvious, but “The Goonies” was clearly an integral part of the DNA of “Stranger Things.” A younger Sean Astin (who played the lovable Bob Newby in Season 2) takes on a starring role as part of a group of young kids hunting for a legendary pirate treasure. The treasure is rumored to be hidden somewhere in the woods around their small town.

Things get serious when a group of dangerous (albeit bumbling) crooks takes up the hunt for the same treasure. The kids enlist the help of their older siblings to find the treasure so they can save the town from unscrupulous real estate developers. As a bonus, you can even spot a young Josh Brolin (the legendary Thanos from the MCU) as part of the cast.

Dark

stranger things dark netflix

Another Netflix original, “Dark” is a German import that hits a lot of the same notes as “Stranger Things.” The series focuses on the different generations of several families in a small German town. Seemingly supernatural events start to occur, including mysterious disappearances and some strange time-bending aspects as well.

“Dark” takes on a decidedly… well, darker tone than “Stranger Things,” but the interweaving stories of the families and the flashbacks to different periods in the town’s history will doubtless have you hooked. Currently, Seasons 1 & 2 are available on Netflix, and a third and final season is currently filming.

8

Super 8

super 8 stranger things

“Super 8” is set in 1979, a few years before “Stranger Things.” Aside from that, the two couldn’t be more similar. A group of kids shooting a home movie happens to witness a massive train crash outside their town, and soon after seemingly unexplainable events start occurring.

The military arrives to put the town on lockdown and a local deputy starts investigating the phenomena. Meanwhile, the group of kids starts an investigation of their own, and it soon becomes apparent that something otherworldly is behind the events. Does any of that sound familiar…?

“Super 8” comes from director J.J. Abrams and is produced by the legendary Steven Spielberg. It has all the same magic and feel from classic Spielberg films, but it, unfortunately, does not get the recognition it deserves. If you like “Stranger Things,” you’ll love “Super 8.”

The Terminator

terminator stranger things

We can’t be the only ones who got definite Terminator vibes from this season’s Soviet subplot, right? Grigori, the Russian assassin who stalks Hopper and Joyce for most of the season, could have been a long lost son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dolph Lundgren.

Everything from the guy’s fashion sense to his haircut to the music that played when he appeared was a total Terminator homage. The knockdown, drag-out fights between Hopper and Grigori were easily some of the season’s best moments, and if you’re looking for more of that 80s action movie goodness, we definitely recommend giving “The Terminator” franchise a rewatch.

The Thing

stranger things the thing

“Stranger Things 3” really leaned into the body horror nastiness, with some stomach-churning moments involving the Mindflayer. We’re never going to look at rats (or garden fertilizer) the same way again.

If you’re not squeamish, check out John Carpenter’s classic horror film “The Thing.” Kurt Russell stars as part of a crew on a remote research base in the Arctic that finds themselves being stalked by a bloodthirsty alien creature. Here’s the twist: the alien can shapeshift, meaning it’s never quite certain that everybody is who they seem. The alien’s true form is a masterclass in the grossest of special effects, and the synth-heavy soundtrack gives us definite Stranger Things vibes.

The Neverending Story

“Turn around, look at what you see….” One of the most hilarious and heartwarming moments of the season was when Dustin and long-distance girlfriend Susie shared a musical montage duet to the sounds of Limahl’s theme song to this classic fantasy movie. It’s easily one of the sweetest and somehow most epic moments of the season, providing a weirdly fitting soundtrack to the climactic battle at the Starcourt Mall.

We can totally picture the two lovebirds bonding while watching this movie, and it’s worth watching again if only to hear that classic 80s theme tune one more time. Artax, rest in peace.

If you’ve never seen it, “The Neverending Story” is a timeless movie. You’ll get a lot of the same feel that you get when you watch a film like “The Princess Bride.” There’s magic, adventure, heart, and an incredibly original fantasy world.

Wrapping up

Just because Season 3 is over doesn’t mean that your retro binge-watching has to be. Whatever your favorite moment of the season was, these movies and shows will satisfy any craving you might have until Season 4 drops… and maybe take your mind off of wondering what’s going on with that mind-blowing post-credits scene.

What’s in store for Fortnite Season 10

Here’s what we anticipate for the upcoming Fortnite season!

Fortnite Season 9 is coming to a close, which means Season 10 is looming large on the horizon. Compared to previous seasons, we haven’t received many hints as to what might be in store for Season 10. That said, the clues that we’ve received so far have been big… literally. Read on for more about the monsters, mechs, and mayhem coming your way for Fortnite Season 10.

What’s in store for Fortnite Season 10

The Monster

fortnite season 10 monster tracks

Fortnite’s had a monster problem for some time now. This mysterious creature, dubbed “Cattus,” first appeared after Season 8 came to its cataclysmic end. After the volcano rained destruction across the map, the Cattus monster began to stir in its icy prison beneath Polar Peak. Players who ventured close were able to see a giant eye glaring out from within the glacier, and its roars shook the surrounding landscape.

10

Eventually, the monster broke loose from its prison, completely destroying Polar Peak in the process and leaving a snow-covered crater in its wake. From there, the creature made a bee-line for the coast, leaving a trail of giant footprints before it apparently disappeared. Cattus didn’t stay missing for long, as players began to catch glimpses of some sort of sea-serpent floating in the waters off the coast of the Battle Royale island, with the Polar Peak fortress situated atop its back.

The next monster sighting came on the outskirts of Neo Tilted, where another giant footprint appeared at the edge of the Loot Lake power plant. This sighting made it all too clear what Cattus could do; the footprint laid several buildings to waste and damaged the large conduit supplying power to the futuristic city.

We still aren’t sure yet what Cattus will look like, but it seems like a given that it’ll finally make an appearance with the advent of Season 10.

The Mech

fortnite season 10 robot

Shortly after Cattus appeared near Neo Tilted, the facilities at Pressure Plant began undergoing some drastic changes. A giant pit was constructed at the center of the former volcano, and it soon became apparent that this new site would serve as a construction facility for a giant bipedal robot. The robot in question began to take shape over the course of several days, with various parts and limbs being added to reveal the massive scale of the mech in question.

With Cattus continuing to roam the map unchecked, it seems pretty likely that this robot is being constructed in an attempt to battle the monster. What that battle is going to look like in terms of gameplay is still uncertain; players have long speculated that a multiplayer boss battle will be coming to Battle Royale, so perhaps we could see players aiding this mech in the fight against Cattus.

The Mayhem

fortnite season 10 public service announcement

Most recently, public service announcement billboards such as the one above have been appearing at Neo Titled, Pressure Plant, and Mega Mall. The billboards all offer warnings to players, showing images of Sky Platforms with the message to get to high ground. Other billboards show the image above, which depicts a player wearing a jetpack alongside the slogan “Duck and Hover.”

Both warnings seem to indicate that players are going to need to get off the ground in Season 10. Since Cattus appears to be some kind of aquatic monster, we predict that a large part of the map will flood, leading to players fighting on islands or the sunken ruins of wrecked locations. Regardless, it seems like we’ve got all the pieces in place for a massive “Pacific Rim”-style kaiju battle.

With these two Titans clashing, it seems likely that the map is going to be getting a drastic and destructive makeover, flood or no flood. We expect to see some familiar locations getting flattened and some new locations being added, and that jetpack being teased in the billboards is sure to shake up gameplay.

Whatever Season 10 ends up bringing to the table, be sure to check back with Softonic for in-depth weekly challenge guides and regular updates on everything Fortnite.

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 10 Challenge Guide

Catch up with the latest Fortnite challenges with our guide!

It’s the final week of challenges for Fortnite Season 9. With giant monsters and robots on the loose around the map, this final week of challenges is your last chance to hit Battle Pass Tier 100 or nab those last few Fortbytes before the season finale hits. As usual, here’s our guide to the last week of challenges, which should make snagging that Tier 100 skin a breeze.

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 10 Challenge Guide

Use an Air Strike in different matches (3)

fortnite airstrike season 9

The Air Strike is a recently added weapon that brings a whole lot of firepower in a small package. Taking the form of a grenade, tossing this weapon will direct a massive airstrike to the area where this weapon lands. The trickiest part of this challenge is actually finding an Air Strike; their Legendary rarity means they can be pretty hard to find. We recommend looking for them in Supply Drops or in high traffic areas like Neo Tilted. Use one in three different matches to finish the challenge.

Damage opponents with shotguns (500)

We’re getting up close and personal again with yet another shotgun challenge. This time, you’ll be using shotguns to deal 500 damage to enemies. We recommend using this opportunity to take the new full-auto Drum Shotgun for a spin; it’s got pretty horrible accuracy, but can deal devastating damage the closer you get.

Search ammo boxes in a single match (7)

This one can be a bit of a tall order, as ammo boxes can sometimes be hard to find. We recommend heading to a larger named location such as Neo Tilted, where ammo boxes are more plentiful. You’ll need to find and open 7 of them over the course of a single match to mark off this challenge.

Visit different public service announcement signs (5)

These recently added Public Service announcement signs can be found in several locations around the map: Neo Tilted, Mega Mall, and Pressure Plant. Each location is home to several of the signs, so you should have little trouble finding the five needed to complete the challenge. They’re so plentiful that you can even finish this one in a single location.

Harvesting Challenge

This multi-tiered harvesting challenge has you nabbing resources from different landmarks around the map. Here’s the order:

  • Stage 1: Collect wood from a Pirate Ship or a Viking Ship (100)
fortnite season 9 week 9 pirate ship

Most players are probably familiar with these two landmarks; the Pirate Ship sits at anchor in Lazy Lagoon, and the Viking Ship can be found at the Viking Village just south of Snobby Shores.

  • Stage 2: Collect stone from a Fork Knife or an Umbrella (100)
fortnite season 9 week 10 fork knife

The Fork Knife and Umbrella are easiest viewed from the air; you’ll see them in the form of some oddly shaped trenches outside of Fatal Fields and east of Pleasant Park. Drop into these trenches and start mining the rocks you find to collect the required amount of stone.

  • Stage 3: Collect metal from a Robot Factory (100)
fortnite season 9 week 10 robot factory

Finally, head to the Robot Factory at Pressure Plant to mine the final resource required, 100 metal. If you’re having trouble pinpointing these locations, check out the map below.

Eliminate opponents in Pleasant Park or Paradise Palms (3)

This elimination challenge is relatively straightforward; take out three enemies in either of the above locations to complete it. As per usual, Team Rumble matches are the best way to finish any elimination-based challenges.

Damage opponents with a pickaxe (200)

This final challenge is another up-close battle, this one tasking you with whacking your opponents with a pickaxe. You probably won’t get any kills and you’ll more than likely die a few times before finishing, but the challenge will be complete once you hit 200 damage.

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 9 Challenge Guide

Use a Chug Jug or Chug Splash in different matches (3)

fortnite season 9 week 9 chug splash

Most players are probably familiar with the massive Chug Jug by now; this keg-sized jar of Shield Juice crops up fairly frequently in chests and other drops. The Chug Splash is newer, however, and takes the form of a throwable shield six-pack you can use to heal teammates. Of the two items, Chug Splashes seem to spawn with a bit more frequency; once you find one, simply toss it to mark it as “used” for the challenge. Do so in three different matches to finish this one off.

Visit a solar array in the jungle, desert, and snow

fortnite season 9 week 9 solar array

It’s time for another scavenger hunt, and this one has you seeking out different solar arrays scattered across the map’s biomes. You’ll need to find a solar array such as the one above in the jungle, desert, and snow biomes. For the jungle, search atop a low hill just east of the hot springs area. For the desert, look on a mesa between Paradise Palms and John Wick’s house. The snow array is the easiest to spot: it takes the form of a massive field of panels just outside the hangars at Frosty Flights. The exact locations of each set of panels are marked on the map below.

fortnite season 9 week 9 solar array map

Rarity Challenge

This weapon rarity challenge has multiple stages. Essentially, you’ll need to get an elimination with each weapon rarity in ascending order, starting at Common and ending on the Epic tier. The lower tiers of this challenge are actually a bit harder; since Common rarity weapons do less damage, it can be more difficult to get kills with them. We recommend searching out shotguns for this challenge so you can knock out opponents with their overwhelming fire rates and pellet spread, and we also recommend taking this on in a Team Rumble match so you can use the respawns to your advantage.

Deal headshot damage (500)

You’ll be following the advice of Thanos and aiming for the head in this damage dealing challenge. You’ll need to accumulate 500 points of headshot damage, which is actually a pretty tall order. We recommend grabbing a shotgun and aiming high: the pellet spread means you can usually snag a fair bit of headshot damage with each shot.

Search chests at Lazy Lagoon or Happy Hamlet

fortnite season 9 week 9 chest search

Both locations for this challenge have a pretty high rate of chest spawns, so you shouldn’t have too much of a problem finding chests to pop open. Head for whichever location is farthest from the flight path of the Battle Bus. Usually this means you’ll have fewer opponents to deal with while you search. Once you’ve opened seven chests, this challenge will be all wrapped up.

Eliminate opponents in different named locations (5)

Another classic elimination challenge, this one should be easy enough to finish in a match of Team Rumble. The matches should progress through a few different named locations as the storm circle closes, so you should be able to hit the 5 different locations required over the course of a couple matches.

Deal damage to an opponent within 10s of landing from a Volcano Vent

This challenge is a bit of a Season 8 throwback. Head up to the northeastern area of the map, in the jungles surrounding the volcano. There, you’ll find plenty of volcano vents erupting from the ground. The trick is then finding an opponent to take down. If you’re lucky, you can drop into a Team Rumble match that centers around the volcano area, which means you’ll have plenty of enemies in the area to hunt down. Launch into the air, and as soon as you land you’ll have 10 seconds to deal as much damage as possible to enemies. 10 seconds is actually longer than you might think, so take your time and don’t freak out and spray your shots wildly. You should be able to meet the required damage threshold with just a few launches.

Apply Shields (400)

We hope you’ve worked up a thirst, because you’ll be slurping down a lot of Shield Potions to complete the first challenge of the week. You’ll need to absorb 400 points of shield via whatever means necessary, whether it be munching mushrooms or downing potions. 400 shields is a lot, meaning you’ll essentially have to charge your shields to full four times to complete the challenge.

Visit different clocks (3)

Time to go for a scavenger hunt. There are a lot of clocks around the Fortnite map, but you’ll need to find three very particular timepieces to finish this challenge.

  • Clock 1: Neo Tilted
fortnite season 9 week 8 tilted clock

The first clock is located in the south half of Neo-Tilted, where the old clock tower used to stand. It’s hard to miss: just look for the giant floating digital numbers to track it down. You’ll have to either land atop the clock or build your way up to it to mark it as visited.

  • Clock 2: Junk Junction
fortnite season 9 week 8 junk junction clock

Clock number 2 is tucked away amongst the piles of debris in Junk Junction. You’ll be able to find it right next to the main entrance gate. This one should actually be familiar: it’s the ruined remnants of the old Tilted Towers clock tower.

  • Clock 3: Desert Mesa
fortnite season 9 week 8 desert clock

The final clock is a bit trickier to track down. Drop in above the desert area, and you’ll be able to see it as you come down: it’s a giant sundial made of ruined cars, sitting atop a tall mesa. Simply land atop the sundial and you’ll have completed the challenge. If you’re having trouble tracking down the clocks, check the map below for their exact locations:

fortnite season 9 week 8 clock map

Eliminate opponents at Snobby Shores or Mega Mall (7)

Eliminating seven opponents is a tall order. We highly recommend doing this challenge in a map of Team Rumble so that it doesn’t take you ages to finish. The task itself is fairly simple: take out enemies in either of the above locations. Of the two, Mega Mall tends to be more high traffic, so it should be easier to get eliminations there.

Damage opponents with Assault Rifles (500)

fortnite season 9 week 8 assault rifle

Whatever your preference may be, simply grab your favorite assault rifle and get to work. We like the newly unvaulted Burst Rifle for this challenge; if only for the nostalgia factor. Once you’ve racked up 500 points of damage total, you’ll have finished the challenge.

Landing Challenge

The landing challenge seems to be pretty popular this season, so you should probably know the drill by now. Simply drop in at the following locations in this order:

  • Stage 1: Land at Paradise Palms
  • Stage 2: Land at Neo Tilted
  • Stage 3: Land at Mega Mall
  • Stage 4: Land at Pleasant Park
  • Stage 5: Land at Junk Junction

Use a volcano vent, air vent, and a zipline in a single match

This one might sound easier than it is. To get to all of these locations in a single match, you’ll have to cover some serious ground… or, simply head to the area around Lonely Lodge and Mega Mall, where you’ll be able to find all of these items gathered fairly close together. Mega Mall is home to plenty of air vents waiting to send you skyward. Once you’ve hit one, head north to Lonely Lodge to hitch a ride on a zipline, then delve into the depths of the jungle and find your way to a volcano vent to finish the challenge off.

Eliminations outside named locations (5)

Yet more eliminations await in this week’s final challenge. Take down five opponents anywhere that isn’t a named location. Be careful, as the official “areas” named locations take up can extend a bit further than you might realize. Make sure you’ve put some good distance between yourself and any nearby settlements to be sure your kills will count.

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 7 Challenge Guide

Search chests at Neo Tilted or Junk Junction (7)

Alright, you know the drill for this one. Head to one of the two locations above and search 7 chests to complete the challenge. Of the two locations, Neo Tilted has way more chest, but it’s also more dangerous. If you want to play it on the safer side, we recommend heading to Junk Junction.

Search ammo boxes in different named locations (7)

fortnite season 9 week 7 ammo box challenge

These little green ammo boxes are the subject of this week’s second challenge. You’ll have to find and open seven of these boxes, but the catch is you’ll have to do so in seven different named locations to net your Battle Stars. This means you’ll probably be completing this challenge over the course of several matches, or you could snag a vehicle and try to get it done in one go.

Suppressed weapon eliminations (3)

fortnite season 9 week 7 suppressed weapon challenge

First thing’s first: you’ll need to find a suppressed weapon. We recommend the Suppressed Pistol. It’s easy to find, and capable of rapid fire, so it should be easy enough to use this weapon to snag those three eliminations.

Deal damage to opponents while riding a vehicle (200)

fortnite season 9 week 7 vehicle challenge

For this challenge, we highly suggest getting your hands on a Driftboard. It’s the only vehicle that allows you to drive and shoot at the same time, making it easy to get to the 200 damage required to complete the challenge.

Locations Challenge

For this standard-issue location challenge you’ll have to get to multiple locations over the course of a single match. Here’s the order:

  • Stage 1: Visit The Block and Loot Lake in a single match
  • Stage 2: Visit Fatal Fields and Neo Tilted in a single match
  • Stage 3: Visit Snobby Shores and Mega Mall in a single match

Search a chest, vending machine, and campfire in a single match

You’ll have to luck out a bit to get this one finished. While chests and campfires are easy enough to find, Vending Machines tend to be a bit harder to track down. Look for them in Named Locations; we’ve found they spawn pretty consistently around Loot Lake and Paradise Palms.

Eliminations from 5m or less (3)

Time to get up close and personal. Using a Combat Shotgun should make short work of this challenge: just get right up in your opponents face before you blast them. Do this three times, and you’ll have completed Week 7.

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 6 Challenge Guide

Landing Challenge

Here’s the order for this week’s landing challenge. You know the drill: simply drop in at each of the locations in order to mark it off the list.

  • Stage 1: Land at Lucky Landing.
  • Stage 2: Land at Loot Lake.
  • Stage 3: Land at Shifty Shafts.
  • Stage 4: Land at Frosty Flights.
  • Stage 5: Land at Haunted Hills.

Deal damage with SMGs to opponents (500)

fortnite season 9 week 6 smg challenge

This week’s main damage-dealing challenge puts the spotlight on SMGs. You’re tasked with using any SMG to deal 500 cumulative damage to your opponents, which is probably easiest to do in a Team Rumble match. We personally like the new Burst SMG for this challenge; it’s accurate and capable of doing some devastating damage, which makes this challenge that much easier.

Hot Spot Challenges

A new feature to Battle Royale, you may have noticed Hot Spots appearing on the minimap in recent weeks. These locations are noted by a yellow highlighted name, and spawn flying Loot Carriers that were the subject of one of the season’s earlier challenges. This is a multi-stage challenge that has you heading to Hot Spots to search out certain items. Here’s what you’ll need to do to finish this one:

  • Stage 1: Search chests at a Hot Spot (3)
  • Stage 2: Search ammo boxes at a Hot Spot (3)
  • Stage 3: Elimination at a Hot Spot (1)

Deal damage to a vehicle driven by an opponent (200)

Just like it says in the name, you’ll want to keep a sharp eye out for any vehicles your opponents might be using. Usually, you’ll be able to hear them before you see them. Since most are fairly slow and make for easy targets, you can potentially get this challenge done in a single burst of gunfire.

Use a Storm Flip in different matches (3)

fortnite season 9 week 6 challenges storm flip

The Storm Flip is a newly added item with a pretty interesting function. Looking like some kind of ethereal molotov, throwing the Storm Flip will do something different depending on where you use it. If you use it while inside the storm, it’ll create a temporary bubble that protects you from taking damage.

Using it outside of the storm does the exact opposite: it essentially creates a mini-storm, damaging anyone unlucky enough to be caught inside. This challenge tasks you with using this new item in three different matches; that said, the Storm Flips are fairly difficult to find, so you’ll probably have to do a lot of searching to get your hands on one.

Use different vehicles in a single match (2)

fortnite season 9 week 6 vehicles challenge

Whether it be a Driftboard, Baller, or Quad Crasher, you’ll need to hop on two different vehicles over the course of a single match to mark off this challenge. Keep an eye out for the yellow RVs scattered across the map, like the one pictured above. Usually, they spawn a few different vehicles nearby, such as the Driftboards and the Quadcrasher pictures. If you find one, it’s easy enough to quickly hop in the two different vehicles.

Eliminate opponents at The Block or Fatal Fields (3)

Finally, a standard elimination challenge rounds off Week 6. Take out 3 opponents at either The Block or Fatal Fields, and you’ll be finished with this week’s challenge set.

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 5 Challenge Guide

Deal damage to opponents with Grenades, Dynamite, or Stink Bombs (200)

This explosive challenge is a little tricky; try to throw your grenades at clusters of enemies for maximum effect, and throw as many grenades as possible to basically carpet-bomb the area and prevent any escape. We recommend steering away from Dynamite for this one; its long fuse gives enemies plenty of time to escape before it explodes.

Search chests at Salty Springs or Frosty Flights (7)

The classic chest search is back. This time, head over to Salty Springs or Frosty Flights and pop open 7 chests to finish this one. We recommend Frosty Flights, as there are a ton of chest spawns and it’s usually less popular with enemies.

Eliminate an opponent in different matches (5)

Take out five enemies to finish this one; the catch is you’ll have to do so in separate matches, so this one may take a bit longer to complete than some of this week’s other challenges.

Race Track Challenge

One of this week’s more interesting challenges, you’ll be heading out to the races for this one. In the case of all tracks, you merely need to finish a single lap to mark off the challenge. Get ready at the track’s starting line, then move through the glowing checkpoints in order to finish the lap.

  • Stage 1: Complete a lap of a desert race track
fortnite season 9 week 5 race track desert

This one shouldn’t be too hard to find, as the track in question is easily visible on the map north of Paradise Palms. Vehicles here tend to be a bit sparse though; keep an eye out for Driftboard and Quad Crasher spawns near the buildings on the outskirts of the track.

Stage 2: Complete a lap of a snowy race track

fortnite season 9 week 5 race track snow

Players might be familiar with this track from a similar challenge in Season 8. It’s located just on the outskirts to the northwest of Happy Hamlet. One important detail: you’ll need a Baller to finish this track, as one of the checkpoints is floating in midair. A few usually spawn at the track’s starting line.

Stage 3: Complete a lap of a grasslands race track

fortnite season 9 week 5 race track grasslands

The final track is in the map’s northern area, midway between Junk Junction and The Block. It’s pretty easy to spot, with lots of brightly colored cones and barriers surrounding the track. Vehicle spawns here are also plentiful; you should easily be able to find a Quad Crasher that you can use to finish the challenge.

If you’re having trouble finding the race tracks, check out the map below for their exact locations:

Place trap items in different matches (5)

Like this week’s elimination challenge, you might find this challenge taking longer as you’ll have to do it over the course of five matches. As far as the trap items, any will do, whether it be a campfire or a damage trap. Traps tend to be easier to find in Team Rumble games, where they are guaranteed to spawn in Supply Drops.

Visit different Wind Turbines in a single match (5)

fortnite season 9 week 5 wind turbines

Another of this week’s location challenges, you’ll want to head to the area surrounding Pleasant Park. Once there, you should have no problem spotting the turbines in question, as they dot the hillsides in the surrounding area. You’ll need to visit five of these turbines in the same match to complete this challenge, so put on your running shoes and get moving.

The exact locations of the turbines are marked on the map below:

Eliminations at Sky Platforms (3)

fortnite season 9 week 5 sky platforms

This final challenge takes us back to the Sky Platforms, which were already the subject of a challenge earlier in the season. The best way to get the three required eliminations is in a match of Team Rumble. With any luck, the match will end up centering on an area with a Sky Platform, and enemies will be plentiful and easy to eliminate.

The map below shows the locations of all Sky Platforms:

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 4 Challenge Guide

Deal damage with Sniper Rifles to opponents (500)

The week’s first challenge will be putting your marksmanship skills to the test. You’ll need to do a cumulative 500 damage to opponents using any Sniper, and since most do high damage per shot, you’ll probably only need a few dead-on shots to get this one done. We recommend the newly unvaulted Semi-Auto Sniper for this task; though it does a bit less damage than other rifles, its high rate of fire makes it easy to land multiple shots on an opponent.

Dancing Signs Challenge

Definitely this week’s hardest challenge, you’re going on a multi-stage, riddle solving scavenger hunt.

  • Stage 1: Dance inside a holographic Tomato head
fortnite season 9 week 4 challenges tomato head sign

The first stage of the challenge will take you to Mega Mall, where you’ll see the giant holographic tomato head in question. Here’s the catch: it’s floating over empty space, so you’ll need to build your way over to it in order to dance inside the hologram. Be careful: if you destroy the holograms emitter, the hologram disappears and you’ll need to try again in a different round.

  • Stage 2: Dance inside a holographic Durr Burger head
fortnite season 9 week 4 challenges durr burger sign

The Durr Burger head is hard to miss: it’s one of the central landmarks in Neo-Tilted. Getting atop this building can be difficult, as it’s one of the taller ones in Neo-Tilted. The easiest way to get inside the hologram and bust a move is to drop directly on top of it, and land on the emitter. Once again, destroying the emitter will also destroy the hologram.

  • Stage 3: Dance on top of a giant dumpling head
fortnite season 9 week 4 challenges giant dumpling

No hologram required for this final task. Simply head down to Lucky Landing, where you’ll see this giant dumpling rotating atop a building. Land on it or build your way to the top and dance your heart out to complete this challenge. If you’re having trouble pinning down these landmarks, check out their locations on the map below.

fortnite season 9 week 4 challenges map

Legendary weapon eliminations (3)

You’ll have to hunt down a Legendary weapon to finish this challenge; make sure to look for that distinctive orange glow. Like all elimination challenges, this should be easiest to complete in a match of Team Rumble. That rule goes double for this challenge: loot crate airdrops are more plentiful in Team Rumble, and they have a higher chance of containing Legendary loot.

Destroy a Loot Carrier in different matches

fortnite season 9 week 4 challenges loot carrier

You may have noticed these little drones floating above certain areas of the map in recent weeks. These are Loot Carriers, and shooting them down will make them drop their precious cargo for you to claim. To find them, look for named locations on the map that are highlighted with gold lettering. Loot Carriers spawn in the highlighted areas only, and you’ll need to shoot down 3 carriers in separate matches to finish this challenge.

Landing Challenge

Yet another classic landing challenge, here’s the order for this one:

  • Stage 1: Land at Polar Peak.
  • Stage 2: Land at Lazy Lagoon.
  • Stage 3: Land at Salty Springs.
  • Stage 4: Land at The Block.
  • Stage 5: Land at Lonely Lodge.

Visit different named locations in a single match (5)

Finally, you’ll need to cover a lot of ground for this week’s last challenge. Five locations in one match is a tall order, but here are a few tips to make this one easier. First, we recommend taking this on in a Team Rumble match. Longer match times and the ability to respawn make it easier to visit multiple locations in one match. Also, try landing near the center of the map. Named locations are closer together in that area, making it easier to move between them.

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 3 Challenge Guide

Vehicle Challenges

fortnite season 9 week 3 driftboard

This is a multi-stage challenge that will have you completing certain tasks with different vehicles. Here’s the order:

  • Stage 1: Land a trick with a Driftboard

The easiest way to finish this task is to get some airtime and start spinning. The simplest trick to land is a 180 or a 360, so try for those to get this stage of the challenge done quickly.

  • Stage 2: Get 3s of airtime with a Quadcrasher

There’s a catch to this challenge: you can’t use Volcano Vents or Slipstreams to get that airtime. It needs to be done by launching off a ramp of some kind. We recommend heading to the volcano and launching off the top to get plenty of air.

  • Stage 3: Destroy opponent structures with a vehicle (3)

Finally, though you can technically use any vehicle, we recommend a Quadcrasher again for this one. In Team Rumble matches, enemy forts tend to get huge and intricate. Point yourself towards one and ram it to finish off this set of challenges.

Search chests at Lonely Lodge or Polar Peak (7)

The classic chest search is an old standby. Head over to one or both of the above locations and pop open 7 chests to complete this challenge. We recommend Polar Peak, as it tends to have way more chest spawns than the Lodge.

Deal damage to an opponent within 10s after using a Slipstream (200)

fortnite season 9 week 3 challenges slipstream

Once again, this challenge is ideally finished in Team Rumble. If you’re lucky, the storm will close in around an area that has a Slipstream passing through; if that’s the case, you can simply hop in and out of the Slipstream at will and easily find opponents to take out. If not, you’ll simply need to ride the Slipstream and keep your eyes peeled for opponents below. As you’ll need to do 200 total damage, that probably means taking down more than one opponent.

Locations Challenge

Another multi-stage challenge, this one tasks you with visiting multiple locations over the course of a single match. Here’s the order:

  • Stage 1: Visit Happy Hamlet and Shifty Shafts in a single match.
  • Stage 2: Visit Sunny Steps and Dusty Divot in a single match.
  • Stage 3: Visit Salty Springs and Haunted Hills in a single match.

Throw the Flying Disc toy and catch it before it lands

This is one of the week’s trickier challenges. First, you’ll need to actually unlock the Flying Disc by getting the Battle Pass Tier 35. Once you’ve done so, try to get atop an elevated position. Then, instead of tossing the disc and running after it, simply throw the disc straight up. It should come straight back down, and all you need to do is position yourself underneath it to catch it.

Explosive weapon eliminations (3)

fortnite season 9 week 3 challenges explosive weapon

Yet another elimination challenge, grab any explosive weapon and take out opponents to finish this one off. We recommend a Rocket Launcher, but anything from Dynamite to Grenades will do the trick. If you’re lucky, you can hit a cluster of opponents and finish this challenge with a single explosion.

Deal damage with different weapons in a single match (5)

You’ll have to stock up on guns to finish this challenge. It doesn’t matter what weapons you take, just so long as they’re different guns. This is easiest to complete in Team Rumble, but there’s a catch. You only have four available inventory slots in that mode, so you’ll have to damage an opponent and then pick up a new weapon at least once to finish the challenge. Otherwise, simply fill your inventory with different weapons and cycle between them to finish the challenge easily.

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 2 Challenge Guide

Launch off Air Vents in different matches (5)

fortnite season 9 week 2 challenges air vent

Continuing a theme from last week, this challenge will introduce you to one of Season 9’s new mechanics. Air Vents can be found in any of the game’s new futuristic locations, such as Mega Mall or Neo-Tilted. Air Vents, pictured above, essentially act as a mini jump pad. Stepping on one will send you bouncing skyward. Jump on an air vent in 5 different matches to complete this challenge.

Landing Challenge

The good old reliable landing challenge makes a return. Drop in at the following locations in this order to finish this challenge.

  • Stage 1: Land at Snobby Shores.
  • Stage 2: Land at Fatal Fields.
  • Stage 3: Land at Sunny Steps.
  • Stage 4: Land at Dusty Divot.
  • Stage 5: Land at Happy Hamlet.

Eliminate opponents at Sunny Steps or Shifty Shafts (3)

Another straightforward and classic challenge, this one will have you taking out opponents at either Sunny Steps or Shifty Shafts. Neither location tends to be particularly high traffic; that said, we recommend jumping into a Team Rumble match to work on this challenge. Depending on where the fighting is centered, it’s possible to complete this challenge in a single match.

Deal damage with Pistols to opponents (500)

This damage dealing challenge will have you using Pistols. While you can use any Pistol to finish the challenge, we recommend either the Hand Cannon or Dual Pistols to do so. Both of these weapons deal much higher damage than the game’s other pistols, so it will be much easier to handle this challenge by using one or the other. You’ll have to deal 500 damage total to complete it.

Visit an oversized phone, a big piano, and a giant dancing fish trophy

One of this week’s more interesting challenges, you’ll be heading to some pretty unusual landmarks around the Battle Royale map.

fortnite season 9 week 2 challenges giant phone

Some players will remember the giant phones from one of last season’s challenges. They’re in two locations: a grove of trees between Lazy Lagoon and The Block, and atop a hill to the north of Lucky Landing.

fortnite season 9 week 2 challenges big piano

The piano may also be familiar, as it was involved in a Season 7 challenge. You’ll find it along the coastline to the south of Lonely Lodge.

fortnite season 9 week 2 fish trophy challenge

Finally, the fish trophy is a new one. You’ll need to head to an unmarked house between Mega Mall and Dusty Divot, where you’ll find it sticking out of the roof. Check out the map below for the exact locations:

fortnite season 9 week 2 challenge map

Search a Chest in different named locations in a single match (3)

A variation on the classic chest searching challenge, you’ll need to put on your hiking shoes for this one. You’ll be searching three chests, but the catch is that they need to be in different locations to count towards the challenge, and you’ll need to do so in a single match. Try to land in an area where locations are clustered together; the map’s central area is probably your best bet.

Ranged Elimination Challenge

Polish off your sniper rifles, because you’ll need to go long for this challenge. It’s hard to gauge distance for challenges like this, but as a general rule, the further the better.

  • Stage 1: Eliminate an opponent from at least 50m away.
  • Stage 2: Eliminate an opponent from at least 75m away.
  • Stage 3: Eliminate an opponent from at least 100m away.

Fortnite: Season 9 Week 1 Challenge Guide

Slipstream Challenge

fortnite season 9 week 1 challenge guide slipstream

The Slipstream challenge is a great introduction to one of Season 9’s new mechanics. It’s a two-parter:

  • Stage 1: Ride the slipstream around Neo-Tilted.
  • Stage 2: Ride the slipstream around Mega Mall.

To get to the Slipstream in question, you’ll want to look for the giant purple rings floating around the locations in question. These rings contain guided air currents that allow you to quickly traverse between locations simply by jumping into them. To ride the Slipstream, you can find various “stations” that will allow you to jump into the current and go for a ride. The challenge should mark as complete as soon as you enter the Slipstream.

Visit all Sky Platforms (7)

fortnite season 9 week 1 challenge guide sky platform

Another intro to one of Season 9’s new mechanics, the Sky Platforms are exactly what their name implies. These floating research stations are scattered across the map, held aloft by four giant turbines. You can also use these turbines to boost you skyward and get to the top of the platforms themselves. As soon as you set foot atop the platform, you’ll see it marked as “visited.” There are seven platforms you’ll need to visit to complete the challenge. Here’s a map to their locations:

Deal damage to opponents within 10 seconds of using a Shadow Bomb (200)

This challenge can be harder than it seems at first. One of the hardest parts is finding a Shadow Bomb in the first place, as they tend to be rare items. Once you do, use the Shadow Bomb to enter your spectral form, then hop out to attack any nearby enemies and start dealing damage. This one is easiest to complete in a match of Team Rumble, where you can use a Shadow Bomb in crowds and find easy targets to deal damage to.

Pick up a Legendary item in different matches (5)

Unlike the previous challenge, this one sounds harder than it is. Any legendary item will do, from Chug Jugs to Assault Rifles to the elusive Bush camo. Just look for the orange glow, and snag the item as soon as you see it. You can also use vending machines to grab legendaries, if you can find one. There’s usually a Legendary vending machine that spawns near Loot Lake, next to the entrance to the excavation pit.

Search chests at Lucky Landing or Loot Lake (7)

fortnite loot lake bunker

A classic chest search, you’ll need to head to either Loot Lake or Lucky Landing and search 7 chests to complete the challenge. Which location you choose is up to you: Lucky tends to be less crowded, but chests aren’t as plentiful as they are at Loot Lake.

Scoped Weapon Eliminations (3)

Whether it be a Sniper Rifle or Scoped Assault Rifle, you simply need to grab a weapon with a scope on it and pick off three opponents to mark this challenge as complete.

Deal damage at certain heights

This final challenge is probably the hardest of the week. It has a few tiers:

  • Stage 1: Deal damage to opponents from at least two stories above (300)
  • Stage 2: Deal damage to opponents from at least four stories above (200)
  • Stage 3: Deal damage to opponents from at least six stories above (100)

The hardest part of this challenge is judging your height. A safe rule of thumb is the higher the better, and if you can, use nearby buildings to estimate how high up you are. This is easiest to complete by building your own structures, so you’ll want to gather plenty of supplies for this one. As usual, any elimination challenge is easiest to complete in a Team Rumble match.

10 most terrifying video game enemies

From spooks to specters, these bad guys will make your blood run cold!

Ocarina of Time

It takes a particular breed of gamer to enjoy the survival horror genre. Survival horror games let you live out a horror movie, controlling your protagonist as they fight to stay alive against a plethora of hellish monsters and twisted scenarios. From Resident Evil to Dead Space and beyond, the survival horror genre has offered no shortage of horrifying moments that stick in the mind of every gamer.

Every now and then a game will create an iconic enemy that’s enough to send shivers down the spine of even the most hardened gamers. Heres a look at the most terrifying, spine-chilling, heart-pounding enemies in gaming.

10 most terrifying video game enemies

10. Xenomorph- Alien: Isolation

alien isolation xenomorph

If you thought the Xenomorph was scary in the movie, just wait until you encounter it for yourself in the game. The Xenomorph is one of the main enemies in Alien: Isolation, relentlessly hunting the player character through the maze-like hallways of Sevastopol Station. You’ll find yourself hiding inside lockers and frantically crawling under desks as the Xenomorph slowly unfurls from the nearest vent, drool dripping to the floor as it tries to track you down.

Oftentimes, you’ll literally have to hold down a button on your controller to keep from breathing so that the Xenomorph doesn’t detect you. You’ll find yourself perking up your ears to listen for the creature as it clambers through the vents. Even after it goes away, you’ll be hiding long after the Xenomorph is gone just to make sure that you aren’t about to walk headlong into that toothy maw.

9. The Witch- Left 4 Dead

left 4 dead witch

You and your friends are making your way through the zombie infested city ruins, blasting away at enemies, when you hear it: the low, pitiful sound of a crying girl. Any veteran Left 4 Dead player will know that sound by heart: the cry of the vicious Witch.

The Witch takes the form of a seemingly harmless sobbing woman, but the chilling background music that kicks in when she appears is enough to make you second guess running over to help her.

You and your friends will have to turn off your flashlights and creep quietly around her in the darkness. Any wrong move or stray gunshot and The Witch will bolt forward and instantly disembowel any nearby players with her disturbingly long, razor-sharp fingernails.

8. Spider Splicer- Bioshock

bioshock spider splicer

Splicers are the twisted denizens of the undersea city of Rapture. Excessive gene-splicing using experimental and addictive Plasmids have turned most Splicers into insane, violent psychopaths who will attack you on sight. Spider Splicers hold a special place among this malevolent menagerie.

As their name implies, the Spider Splicer’s genetic modifications allow them to skitter up and down walls and along ceilings. They’ll taunt you from out of sight, their chilling voices echoing through Rapture’s ruined corridors before they finally jump down and gut you with their wicked looking hook blades.

7. Wendigo- Until Dawn

until dawn wendigo

Wendigos are a disturbing creature from Native American folklore. Wendigos are created when humans resort to cannibalism, which warps them into twisted, inhuman monsters with long, spindly limbs, and an insatiable hunger. In Until Dawn, players spend most of the game believing the creepy happenings are the result of a human killer… until, of course, the Wendigo appears.

It’s then that you realize the stakes are much higher than you ever could have imagined. You’ll spend much of the rest of the game evading the Wendigos. Since Until Dawn uses motion controls, there are moments when you’ll literally have to keep stock still to prevent the Wendigos from finding you and ripping you apart.

6. Clickers- The Last of Us

the last of us clicker

Clickers are the final stages of humans that have been infected by the Cordyceps fungus. Clickers are as horrific to look on as they are to fight. Fungal growths cover every inch of their body, leading to some truly skin-crawling enemies. The sounds they make are also nightmare-inducing: unable to see, the Clickers get their name from the clicking sound they use to echolocate their prey.

Fighting the Clickers should be avoided at all costs; they’re tough and powerful, capable of ripping your throat out in a single bite. As such, you’ll find yourself in some tense scenarios where you’ll have to sneak your way through massive groups of these lethal creatures.

5. Necromorphs- Dead Space

necromorph dead space

A shining example of Lovecraftian horror, Necromorphs are the result of exposure to a deep-space alien artifact known as The Marker. People that become Necromorphs are warped beyond recognition as knife-like extra limbs erupt from their backs and their bodies split and contort into impossible shapes.

Necromorphs are notoriously hard to kill; even after you take their heads off, they’ll still keep coming. To stop one, you’ll have to almost totally dismember it with Dead Space’s arsenal of mining tools and other improvised weapons. The best part? Necromorphs are the game’s standard enemies. We haven’t even mentioned the host of fear-inducing boss creatures and other horrors the game has in store.

4. Walrider- Outlast

walrider outlast

The Walrider is the result of the intersection between science and the supernatural. The Walrider takes its name from a creature from German folklore that perches on the chests of sleeping children and drains them of life. In Outlast, the Walrider isn’t exactly supernatural: it’s actually a swarm of intelligent nanobots, controlled by the mind of a human test subject.

Only visible using your camera’s night vision filter, the Walrider floats above the ground at tremendous speeds and is capable of ripping any human to pieces in moments. When you finally go up against this creature near the end of the game, you only have one option if you hope to survive: run.

3. Regenerator- Resident Evil 4

resident evil 4 regenerator

Of all the monsters in the expansive Resident Evil series, the Regenerator stands out as one of the creepiest. Encountered towards the end of Resident Evil 4, the Regenerator does exactly what its name implies: it regenerates its own flesh despite the massive amounts of damage you can throw at it.

Almost human in appearance, the Regenerators are known for their jerky, not-quite-right movements. The sound of their ragged breathing is enough to induce a cold sweat in even the most hardened Resident Evil veteran. Even if you blow off their limbs, they’ll keep coming, crawling and leaping along the ground to try to bite a chunk out of your legs or shoulder. Some Regenerator variants even feature spiky protrusions all over their body, looking for all the world like walking iron maidens.

2. Anima- The Evil Within 2

evil within 2 anima

Anima truly is the stuff of nightmares. First encountered about midway through The Evil Within 2, Anima is a masterclass in how to create an enemy that induces pure, brain-numbing terror. First, you’ll notice a low mist begin to creep along the ground, and then you hear it: a woman’s voice singing an off-key, discordant melody. This means that Anima is nearby… and she’s most likely right behind you.

The worst part? Her singing comes from the controller speaker, so it sounds like she’s actually in the room with you as you play. Looking for all the world like a distillation of all the worst parts of “The Grudge” and “The Ring,” Anima lazily floats along until she spots you. After that, she’ll lurch towards you at inhuman speeds until you can see every detail of her cold, dead features. Just try to go up against Anima with the lights off. We dare you.

1. Pyramid Head- Silent Hill

Pyramid Head is dread personified. Insanely tough and definitively creepy, Pyramid Head will move relentlessly towards you, dragging his massive blade behind him. Your gun does essentially nothing against him; your best bet is to stay far, far away and keep alive.

Pyramid Head will stalk you throughout the events of Silent Hill 2. What really makes Pyramid Head so frightening is his appearance: the giant knife, the bloody apron, and that blank metal helmet. You’ll find yourself going through entire segments dreading the moment that Pyramid Head appears. Even if he never shows up; his presence is constantly looming over the game, reminding you that you’re never as safe as you think you are.

Wrapping up

With a list of enemies that make run-of-the-mill creatures like zombies look like child’s play, survival horror games have introduced gamers to some of the most spine-tingling examples of what the genre has to offer. Whether it be ghostly apparitions or murderous extraterrestrials, these enemies will stick with you long after you’ve beaten the game.

The 10 best Borderlands boss battles

From the depths of the Vault to the wilds of Pandora, these baddies rocked us to the core!

Bomm Bewm

The Borderlands series is known for a lot of things: cartoony graphics, ridiculous humor, and an absolutely stupid amount of unique and deadly weapons for players to use.

It’s also known for its boss battles. The iconic shoot-and-loot series has a reputation for boss battles that are both over-the-top and notoriously hard. With three games already and a fourth on the way, there certainly isn’t any shortage of bad guys to fight. Here’s our list of the 10 best boss fights in the Borderlands series.

The 10 best Borderlands boss battles

10. The Sentinel- Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

borderlands pre sequel sentinel boss

After finally arriving at Eleseer after fighting your way through the hordes of enemies littering Pandora’s moon Elpis, you encounter The Sentinel. This ancient vault guardian is a tough, agile opponent with a wicked looking energy axe.

Once The Sentinel lies defeated, then you get to the real boss battle: a massive version of The Sentinel, known as The Empyrean Sentinel, emerges from the floor of the Vault. Then the true fight begins: a long, three-stage clash with this colossal and intimidating opponent.

9. Sledge- Borderlands

borderlands sledge boss

By all accounts, Sledge isn’t a nice dude. He makes his living terrorizing the people of Fyrestone and engaging in all sorts of atrocities, such as reportedly skinning an entire family alive. He antagonizes the players for most of the opening stages of the game before you eventually gather your strength and head to his hideout to take him down. If you can avoid his brutal hammer and survive waves of bandits, you’ll get to land a satisfying final blow on this brute.

8. BNK3R- Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 BNK3R boss

About midway through Borderlands 2, you and your team of Vault Hunters set out to rescue Angel from the Handsome Jack’s bunker. Upon arrival at the fortress, you find that the bunker isn’t actually a bunker at all: it’s a giant combat drone dubbed BNK3R. What ensues is a tough, drag-out fight against a flying opponent bristling with deadly weapons. Though it can be a frustrating battle, seeing the loot raining from BNK3R’s flaming husk after finishing it off is worth the struggle.

7. The Destroyer- Borderlands

borderlands the destroyer boss

For most of Borderlands, it’s assumed that your final fight will be with the ruthless Commandant Steele, a Siren and leader of the Atlas Corporation’s Crimson Lance commando unit. At the game’s climax, Steele beats you to the Vault and opens it, only to be impaled and devoured by the game’s true final boss, The Destroyer.

This godlike, interdimensional being is a disgusting sight to behold: a mass of writhing flesh and bone with a single beady eye at the center. The fight against The Destroyer can be one of the hardest in the game, and you’ll want to be sure that you have plenty of ammo on hand. You’ll need to whittle down The Destroyer’s health bar while dodging devastating attacks to claim your final victory.

6. Hyperius the Invincible- Borderlands 2

borderlands 2 hyperius the invincible boss

To say that Hyperius is a tough fight might be underselling it a bit. Added as part of the “Captain Scarlett” DLC, Hyperius is a raid boss in the truest sense of the term. Even with a full squad of four players, defeating Hyperius is still a monumental feat. The key is taking out the deranged Hyperion engineer’s squad of shield-generating robots, and each one is tough enough to be a boss by itself. It’s a frustrating, rage-inducing battle, but making it to the end will net you some truly sweet loot.

5. Wilhelm- Borderlands 2

borderlands 2 wilhelm boss battle

This fight carries a lot more weight if you’ve played The Pre-Sequel. Handsome Jack’s most vicious and ruthless enforcer, Wilhelm is actually a playable character in The Pre-Sequel. A mercenary with a surgical addiction, Wilhelm is constantly searching for ways to cybernetically enhance his body to get an edge on the battlefield. Mostly human in The Pre-Sequel, by the time you encounter him in Borderlands 2 Wilhelm is more machine than man. You’ll be forced to take on Wilhelm in the wreckage of a crashed train and bring the mercenary’s story to its final conclusion.

4. Crawmerax- Borderlands

borderlands crawmerax boss

For a creature that’s essentially nothing more than a giant lobster, Crawmerax poses a pretty big threat. Added as part of a DLC expansion, Crawmerax was the first raid boss of the Borderlands series. Players take on this gargantuan shellfish as part of the aptly titled mission “You. Will. Die.” Easily one of the most time-consuming bosses in the entire series, taking Crawmerax down is a challenge even with a full party.

3. Terramorphous- Borderlands 2

borderlands 2 terramorphous boss

A worthy predecessor to Crawmerax, Terramorphous is a giant thresher that spawns only after beating the main storyline of Borderlands 2. The fight is essentially impossible unless you’ve got a full party of max level characters with some pretty hefty equipment. However, legend has it that one Gearbox employee figured out a build that allowed him to take on the fight solo. That said, we don’t recommend trying it at home. After all, there’s a reason the Terramorphous mission is called “You. Will. Die. (Seriously.)”

2. Bloodwing- Borderlands 2

borderlands 2 bloodwing boss

No matter the game, the most memorable boss battles are more than just shooting up tough opponents. Veterans of the original Borderlands know Bloodwing as Mordecai’s beloved animal companion. Playing through the game as Mordecai allowed players to level up their avian pal and eventually form a tight bond with him. In Borderlands 2, you aid Mordecai in a rescue mission with the intent of freeing the captured Bloodwing from the clutches of Handsome Jack. Unfortunately, Jack forces Bloodwing to fight the players and Mordecai. What follows is an emotional and agonizing fight that eventually ends when Jack remotely detonates Bloodwing’s explosive collar, bringing the loyal bird’s story to a heartbreaking end.

1. Handsome Jack- Borderlands 2

borderlands 2 handsome jack boss

After taunting you, killing your friends, and attempting to stop you over the course of the entire game, you finally get to take on Jack face-to-face in the depths of the Warrior Vault. It’s a hard but cathartic fight; Jack battles viciously, mocking you the entire time. Taking out an entire game’s worth of aggression on Jack is immensely satisfying. Once you have Jack on his last legs, you’re presented with a choice: kill Jack yourself, or let Lilith have the honor. Regardless, listening to the egomaniacal Hyperion CEO whimper out his last words is a sweet, sweet reward for making it to the end of the game… even if you do have to turn around and fight another boss right after he goes down.

Wrapping up

With a roster of impressive fights and memorable bad guys already, Borderlands 3 has quite a high standard to live up to. Be sure to check back with Softonic for more news and updates about the forthcoming Borderlands title.

10 movie tie-in games that are actually good

Movie tie-in games have a bad reputation, but we have 10 that are actually fun!

Bringing up movie tie-in games around any dedicated gamer is bound to elicit a cringe. Games based on movies have an arguably well-deserved reputation of being notoriously bad. However good the source material is, movie games as a whole tend to be nothing more than half-finished cash grabs attempting to capitalize on a film’s success. For a while, movie tie-in games fell out of favor, but may be about to enjoy a comeback. If the newly announced Avengers game is any indication, we might be on the verge of a movie tie-in renaissance in the gaming world. As such, we’re taking a look at 10 examples of excellence in this otherwise less-than-stellar genre.

10. Enter the Matrix

enter the matrix

Enter the Matrix took the term “movie tie-in” to the next level. Released at the same time as “The Matrix: Reloaded,” Enter the Matrix had a lot of the same team working on the game’s story, namely The Wachowskis themselves.

The game was intended to be a companion piece to the movie, and the two stories weave together in a way that adds a shocking amount to the plot of the movie. The game’s live-action cutscenes were filmed alongside the movie itself using the same actors, so in essence, Enter the Matrix acted as an entirely new Matrix movie.

In addition to the well-crafted story, the game played extremely similarly to PS2 classic Max Payne. Though Max Payne arguably did a few things better, the gameplay was still solid and made players feel like part of the movie. Ever wanted to see if you could hold your own against an Agent? Enter the Matrix let you put those skills to the test.

9. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

harry potter and the sorcerers stone game

Released back when Harry Potter was first making a splash in the U.S., Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone took the hype to new levels. Built around platforming and puzzle solving with a dash of spell-based combat for good measure, this game’s real highlight was the setting.

Hogwarts was a fully realized, massive location. The sprawling castle included familiar areas from the books and movies as well as several original locations that drove home how massive the wizarding school really was. One of the best parts of the game was the positively ridiculous amount of secrets, easter eggs, and collectibles tucked away in hidden areas around the castle. Years later, and we’re still not sure we found them all.

8. Ratchet & Clank

ratchet & clank 2016

This one’s a bit of a chicken vs. egg situation. The original Ratchet & Clank first dropped in 2002 for the PS2, and was an action platformer focusing on the titular intrepid heroes and their efforts to save the galaxy from a nefarious dictator.

In 2016, Ratchet & Clank got a movie and a new game as a tie-in. Not exactly a reboot, the game was billed as a “reimagining” of the original that coincided with the events of the movie.

Though the movie left something to be desired, the game was fantastic. Combining the best of old and new, Ratchet & Clank merged all the improved gameplay of more recent entries in the series with classic characters and settings from the original. The game was a definite nostalgia trip and a solid entry in the franchise, whether or not you played the first game or saw the movie.

7. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

They don’t make them like this anymore. Built on a well-realized backbone of hack-n-slash combat and some RPG elements, Return of the King let players live out the events of the movie, and the best part? You could do it with friends. The game was fully equipped for couch co-op. Players could select from a roster of iconic characters from the movie, each with their own unique fighting style and abilities. Then, you and your buddies could slice and dice through hordes of orcs in some of the film’s most iconic battles, with Howard Shore’s epic score blaring in the background. If anybody at EA is listening, may we humbly suggest that this game is due for a remake?

6. Alien: Isolation

alien isolation

Playing Alien: Isolation is, without exaggeration, like stepping into an Alien movie. The level of immersion in this game is incredible; set some time after the events of the original “Alien,” you play as Ripley’s daughter aboard the space station Sevastopol, investigating your mother’s disappearance. It soon becomes apparent that the Xenomorphs have made it aboard the Sevastopol as well, and almost from the moment you set foot in the game, you’re engaging in a tense fight for survival. From the distinctive 70s futuristic aesthetic to sound effects and music taken straight from the movies, this game is a love letter to “Alien” fans and a must play for anybody who enjoys a solid survival-horror experience.

5. GoldenEye 007

goldeneye 007 game

Is there any movie tie-in more quintessential than the classic GoldenEye 007? Originally created as a tie-in for the 90s Bond flick “GoldenEye,” the game’s popularity exploded and it soon took on a life of its own. Though it did include a single-player campaign based on the movie, multiplayer was where GoldenEye 007 really stood out. You and your friends could pick characters from classic and modern Bond films, tweak game rules to your liking, and then try to gun each other down in a number of distinct arena locations. Though the controls are a bit… clunky by modern standards, GoldenEye remains the gold standard for local multiplayer games to this day.

4. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

chronicles of riddick escape from butcher bay game

Way, way before Vin Diesel was Groot, he was Riddick. Riddick was the antihero protagonist of the early 2000s “Chronicles of Riddick” franchise, which spanned several films and even an anime.

In the game, players controlled Riddick as he attempted to escape from the maximum security Butcher Bay prison. The plot acts as a prequel to the movies, and the game itself plays like a glorious love child of Splinter Cell and Half-Life 2. It’s a blend of action and stealth that many games still struggle with today, but Escape from Butcher Bay achieved the mix perfectly. The game was remastered a few years back for the PS3, and we highly recommend tracking down a copy if possible.

3. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

star wars episode 3 revenge of the sith game

Star Wars fans still have mixed feelings about the third entry in the prequel franchise, and those mixed feelings extend to the movie’s video game companion. Despite its shortcomings, Revenge of the Sith had a lot going for it. The story played right alongside the events of the movie, allowing you to take on the role of several characters and enjoy some satisfying third-person lightsaber combat. Multiplayer also shined, letting players select characters and duke it out on Star Wars-inspired battlefields.

Revenge of the Sith is the meat-and-potatoes of movie tie-in games: nothing too fancy, but still classic and a gold standard when it comes to how to do a movie tie-in the right way.

2. Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie

king kong game

Despite its horrendously long title, King Kong stood out among movie tie-ins as one of the best. Players take on the role of Adrien Brody’s character as he fights across Skull Island to save his girlfriend, Ann Darrow. Along the way, you encounter a rather gruesome array of monsters, from ghoulish giant vampire bats to full grown T-Rexes.

This game takes survival seriously: there’s no HUD at all, meaning you’ll have to keep track of your own health and ammo, and aim using your weapon’s iron sights as opposed to a reticle. Guns themselves are very rare, meaning players would usually find themselves improvising melee combat with spears and bones or just avoiding combat altogether.

Despite how it sounds, the game was never too difficult, but rather just the right level to be immensely satisfying. In addition, several standout sequences let you play as Kong himself, and there’s nothing we can write to quite capture how it feels to rip a T-Rex’s jaw clean off.

1. Spider-Man 2

spider man 2 game

It’s pizza time. Before the recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 served as the template for everything that the new game got right. Players could swing around a huge open-world New York, taking on ambient missions in a style similar to GTA. Though the game did follow the events of the movie, the numerous sidequests made Spider-Man 2 into an experience all its own. Like any good Spider-Man iteration, it also didn’t take itself too seriously, and there are plenty of humorous easter eggs and encounters to discover around the city. Fingers crossed that the forthcoming Avengers game takes notes from this masked predecessor.

Movie tie-in games don’t have to be entirely bad. When developed by the right team, movie games can be unique and satisfying experiences all on their own.
