10 coolest dogs in video games

Who is the “goodest” good boy? Let’s find out!

Chop GTA

Though humans usually tend to be the stars of most video games, they will occasionally get to share that spotlight with some rather fuzzy cohorts. Whether it be wandering the post-apocalyptic wastes, taking on covert operations, or playing some radical new jams on guitar, video game dogs are every bit as lovable as their real-life counterparts. Here, we’re counting down the 10 best dogs in gaming.

Riley- Call of Duty: Ghosts

We were torn between placing Riley on this list or Rush from the Mega Man franchise. However, after we learned more about Riley’s history, we had to give throw this dog a bone.

Riley was, in many ways, a pioneer for pups in modern gaming. The stalwart Riley garnered a fair bit of attention when Call of Duty: Ghosts hit the scene, and since then dogs in gaming have seen a bit of a renaissance. This stalwart German Shepherd acted as an indispensable companion to the Ghost unit, keeping pace through all manner of dangerous missions. That’s not the best part, though: Riley is a real dog, or more accurately, two dogs. Real-life Navy SEAL canines Ruger and Colin provided motion-capture performances for the fictional Riley.

That Dog- Resident Evil 4

Although the Silent Hill dog did not make this list, another pooch from another great horror franchise did!

Early on in Resident Evil 4, way before you start encountering bloodthirsty villagers and disturbing bioweapons, Leon S. Kennedy will run into a heartbreaking sight. A whimpering wild dog has his back leg caught in a rusty bear trap. Though you do have the option to just walk on past (but seriously, why would you?!), freeing this poor creature will net you some serious good karma. After freeing the dog, he’ll let out a happy bark and limp off into the woods, but will return later to help you in the boss battle against the colossal El Gigante.

Seeing the white-furred pup appear at the bleakest moment of the fight makes us wonder if maybe Gandalf has a secret dog form?

Sif- Dark Souls

Sif is what some experts might call a “chonky boi,” or alternately, a “big chungus.” This rather large wolf’s size isn’t something to be scoffed at, though. That giant sword that Sif carries around like a chew toy can do some serious damage. Jokes aside, Sif has a tragic backstory: Sif’s master, Artorias, sacrificed himself to protect his loyal companion from the corruption of the Abyss. After rescuing the trapped wolf, you can summon Sif to fight by your side later on.

K.K. Slider- “Animal Crossing”

He’s a dog. He’s got a guitar. He plays some sweet tunes. Is there honestly anything better? K.K. Slider’s legendary jams and smooth attitude have turned him into one of the most iconic characters in the Animal Crossing series. He also uses his music as a tool to fight the man, railing against “industry fat cats” and trying to keep his music as authentic as possible. So, not only is K.K. Slider one groovy pup, but he also might be one of the last musicians with any integrity.

Amaterasu- “Okami”

Amaterasu is a dog god… or maybe god dog? Either way, she’s based on an actual figure from Japanese mythology. The star of the colorful and iconic Okami, Amaterasu is trying to put a troubled past behind her, traveling the land to protect the innocent from the demonic forces of darkness. Not only that, but she creates some truly remarkable artwork along the way.

Also, if anyone from Nintendo is listening, we would love to see Amaterasu in Super Smash Bros.

Barbas- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

When we first loaded up Skyrim on our Xbox 360, we never would’ve guessed that we would be making a new canine bestie.

Barbas is everyone’s dream made a reality: a bonafide talking dog. Not only does this boy talk, but he’s also got jokes. His sarcasm is about as dry as it comes, and you’ll need to keep some Resist Fire potions on hand to deal with his steady stream of burns.

Sense of humor aside, Barbas is a good friend and companion, but unfortunately, you can’t keep him for long. Eventually, you’ll need to return him to his true master: the Daedric Prince Clavicus Vile, a god-like being who’s basically Skyrim’s version of Loki.

Boomer is four-legged proof that dogs really are man’s best friend. Whether it’s grabbing ammo and supplies from fallen foes, spotting enemies from afar, or ripping their throats out like he’s going after the squeaker in a new toy, Boomer is just about the best furry companion you could ask for. Though Far Cry 5 boasts an animal menagerie that includes a grizzly bear and a puma that you can keep as companions, Boomer is truly the leader of the pack. Such a good boy.

When you first meet Chop he’s a bit… rough around the edges. Franklin’s animal companion is about as in-touch with his “baser instincts” as an animal can get. That said, Chop grows as Franklin does, following him from his cramped room at his aunt’s house to a swanky new pad in Vinewood. Chop stays the same lovable goof at heart, though, and he’s always down for a walk around the block or a rousing game of fetch. If you run into any annoying joggers or vapid celebrities along the way, Chop will be there to show them what it means to be top dog in Vinewood.

Though Riley may be the original special ops canine, D. Dog is the Big Boss. This scrappy mutt is found by Venom Snake in the dusty deserts of Afghanistan. The elite soldier rescues the one-eyed puppy and he soon becomes the beloved mascot of the Diamond Dogs, sporting an eyepatch just like his master.

You can dress him up in a whole wardrobe’s worth of sweet tactical gear, chance his appearance and coat, and give him all the head skritches you want even if you’re in the middle of a dangerous mission. There’s nothing more heartwarming than seeing an entire base full of hardened mercenaries acting like delighted little kids when they see D. Dog. He’s a good boy who will be by your side no matter what!

Dogmeat is down for just about any task that might come his way, from facing down super mutants to scavenging for supplies. You can even talk to this intelligent fellow, and though he may not be able to speak, he can offer some riveting insights into the world around him. Best of all, you can even give him his own doghouse as part of your buildable settlements in Fallout 4. You won’t want to go anywhere in the post-apocalypse without Dogmeat at your side.

10 best video game worlds

From the streets of Los Santos to the vampires and dragons of Skyrim, these worlds are a home away from home.

Mario 64

From underwater dystopias to snow-covered castles and tropical jungles, video games can take us places beyond our wildest dreams. While interesting characters and an intriguing plot are certainly important, oftentimes a game’s setting is what sticks with players long after they put down the controller. Here, we’re counting down 10 of the most iconic and unforgettable worlds in gaming history.

10 best video game locations

10. The City- “Mirror’s Edge”

mirror's edge city

This futuristic sci-fi dystopia is a collection of clean lines and polished edges. Despite the City’s clean, shiny exterior it has a seedy underbelly that’s totally at odds with what lies on the surface.

Part of what makes The City such a distinctive location is the contrast of bright primary colors against a white backdrop. This creates some striking and unique visuals while also guiding players in their high-stakes freeruns.

The intricacies and unique visual styles of each district will make players want to return over and over again.

9. Talos Station- “Prey”

prey talos station

Talos Station is the orbital headquarters of the Transtar Corporation, a futuristic conglomerate with their hands in everything from genetic modification to heavy industry and space travel. It stands to reason that their corporate headquarters is a lavish monument to their power.

Combining a distinctly 60s aesthetic with the sci-fi stylings of a space station, walking through the halls of Talos will make players feel like Don Draper in space. That is, of course, if they can stay alive long enough against the extraterrestrial beings that have slaughtered the station’s inhabitants.

8. Libertalia- “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End”

Much of the fourth Uncharted title is spent pursuing the location of the legendary pirate haven known as Libertalia. When players finally manage to lay eyes on this mythical location, the breathtaking vistas make the hunt more than worthwhile.

There’s something rather poignant about seeing the once vibrant pirate town decaying and empty, slowly being overtaken by jungle plants. The crumbling wooden buildings and decrepit stone mansions of the pirate lords have an almost supernatural effect that will have players yearning for a return to the freedom-filled golden age of swashbucklers and rogues.

7. Milky Way Galaxy- “Mass Effect Trilogy”

Making an entire galaxy into a memorable setting is no small feat, but Mass Effect does so with ease. With hundreds of planets to explore, each world has its own distinctive feeling and setting. From the seedy underworlds of Omega to the stalwart spires of the Citadel, each world has its own unique flavor that soon makes a massive galaxy feel like home.

With unique alien races and rich lore to provide a backdrop to these sci-fi worlds, players will want to return to the world of Mass Effect over and over again.

6. New Hanover- “Red Dead Redemption 2”

Though the world of the original Red Dead Redemption was groundbreaking in its own right, Red Dead Redemption 2 took that world to the next level. Set in America at the turn of the century, players are able to explore a huge map filled with fictional analogs to real-life locations in the United States. Players can wade through the humid swamps of Lemoyne or brave the howling winds and peaks of the Grizzlies.

They can also head to bustling modern metropolises like Saint Denis or rough and tumble frontier towns like Armadillo. Every corner of the world feels fully realized and full of life. Players could explore for hours and still not come close to experiencing everything the world of Red Dead 2 has to offer.

5. Mojave Wastes- “Fallout: New Vegas”

Set in an alternate timeline where the world fell to ruin after a catastrophic nuclear war, the survivors emerged hundreds of years later to rebuild society. Fallout New Vegas is set among the scorching deserts of the American southwest, and particularly the area surrounding the ruins of Las Vegas.

Now called New Vegas, the city is a neon-lit reimagining of a post-apocalyptic gambler’s paradise. The contrast of glitzy casinos and crumbling bombed-out buildings offers a truly unique visual, and the wasteland ruins surrounding New Vegas are filled with secrets and plenty of opportunity for adventure as well.

4. Hyrule- “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”

Though gamers have been visiting the mythical kingdom of Hyrule for quite some time now, Breath of the Wild showcased this familiar world in a way that has never been seen before.

The entire kingdom is open for players to explore in any way they so choose. Though the game’s plot is certainly riveting, wandering through the lush forests and verdant fields of the game world is a huge part of what made Breath of the Wild into an instant classic.

3. Los Santos- “Grand Theft Auto V”

grand theft auto v los santos

Los Santos is a fictionalized version of the real-life Los Angeles, but as per usual with Rockstar, the fictionalized city is just as full of life as its real-world counterpart. Players can explore the sun-drenched metropolis in the game’s superb campaign or take to the streets in online mode to make a living as the next big criminal kingpin.

Whether it’s bombing down streets in exotic supercars or navigating backcountry roads on a dirtbike, the world of Los Santos offers endless hours of fun and mayhem for any wannabe crime lord. Now if only we knew something about the world in Grand Theft Auto VI.

2. Rapture- “Bioshock”

When Rapture was first introduced to the gaming world 12 years ago, it left an instant impression on the mind of every gamer.

This underwater metropolis was the brainchild of unscrupulous industrialist Andrew Ryan. He envisioned a hyper-capitalist society free of the bounds of the surface world and put his vast fortune to use building this art deco city beneath the frigid waters of the North Atlantic.

Unfortunately, this vision of an Ayn Rand inspired paradise soon fell to pieces after Rapture’s inhabitants lost their minds as the result of an experimental genetic modification technology. Exploring the twisted remnants of this blood-spattered, luxurious paradise provided some haunting moments and chilling settings that made an indelible mark on the gaming world.

1. Skyrim- “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim”

Experiencing the rich fantasy world of Skyrim is probably as close as most people will come to living out an episode of “Game of Thrones.”

Accompanied by Jeremy Soule’s epic soundtrack, players can fight dragons, wizards, and bandits among the bleak and beautiful snow-covered peaks of Skyrim. Whether saving a town from vampires or honing their magic skills at the College of Winterhold, the province of Skyrim provides almost infinite opportunities for adventure and exploration.

GTA Online is finally getting a casino

Gambling minigames are coming to Grand Theft Auto Online!

GTA V

Grand Theft Auto Online players have been clamoring for a casino ever since the game hit shelves several years ago. The empty casino building, present in the game since launch, has been taunting players with the promises of high stakes gambling for some time. Now, it appears that the vacant casino is finally about to come to life, with Rockstar teasing the addition of a glitzy and glamorous gambling paradise in a forthcoming update to GTA Online.

In late June, Rockstar took to Twitter to tease the forthcoming Diamond Casino & Resort. According to Rockstar, the casino will be “a brand-new luxury destination and the largest mass entertainment complex of its kind in Southern San Andreas.”

Aside from this tantalizing teaser, Rockstar hasn’t offered much in the way of specifics when it comes to gameplay or actual features. That said, Rockstar is no stranger to gambling minigames. Red Dead Redemption players will know that classic casino staples like Blackjack, Poker, and a variety of dice games are all present in the single-player campaign.

In addition, Red Dead Online recently introduced multiplayer poker tables to the game world. It seems like a safe bet that players will see similar games in Grand Theft Auto’s casino as well. Rockstar has also teased something called “spinning the Lucky Wheel.” While we don’t know exactly what this entails, it seems to indicate a suitably high stakes roulette game. We’re envisioning vast sums of money, cars, and even property as potential prizes.

Aside from the standard slate of casino games, some data miners have reportedly found hints in the game files that indicate horse racing may also be added in the casino update. That would make sense, as the casino just so happens to be located next to a fully equipped horse racing track. In addition to betting, Rockstar has stated that the casino will include high-end luxury shopping and hotel rooms, valet parking, as well as a selection of bars and lounges. Rockstar seems on track to bring a taste of Vegas directly to the world of GTA Online.

Despite the announcement, much about the casino still remains uncertain. Rockstar has yet to announce an official release date for the update but has stated the casino will open before the summer is over. That’s still quite a large window, as summer doesn’t officially end until Sept. 23. Despite the lack of a release date, data miners have again delved into the game files to find that updates will be slowly rolling out over time:

Interested players should stop by the in-game casino from time to time to watch the progress on the construction as the building nears opening. Based on these hints, it seems likely that the appearance of the building itself will be receiving a massive overhaul.

We also have yet to receive news about any other content included with the update, such as outfits, vehicles, and other casino-themed items. Knowing Rockstar, however, these items will doubtless be coming out alongside the release of the full update. If Rockstar follows the pattern, players can also expect to see cash rewards and other in-game bonuses in the lead-up to the casino’s launch.

GTA Online players can check back with Softonic for more casino news as it gets revealed, as well as other updates on GTA Online and the forthcoming GTA 6.

How to design a great open world game

What separates a great open world game from a bad one?

Many see open world games as the be-all-end-all genre of gaming, and it’s easy to see why. It seems that gamers and game developers alike consider a massive, immersive open world as the pinnacle of game design. Being able to go anywhere and do anything was a driving promise of the early 3D era, and within the last ten years or so the technology to realize this promise finally became available. Open world games like Grand Theft Auto V, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Minecraft, and Red Dead Redemption 2 are among the best-reviewed games of all time, and the open world genre shows no signs of slowing down.

Where shooters were the prevailing genre of the early-2000’s, open world games are the hottest genre of the current decade. Not every open world game can be a masterpiece, however. For every Skyrim, there are dozens of boring copy-pasted open worlds that impress with their size but let down with their gameplay. To show where these games come short, we came up with some of the most important elements of making a fun and immersive open world.

What separates the best open world games from the competition?

Don’t gate off the world

In Breath of the Wild, you can head off to fight the final boss Ganon right away. You'll get your ass kicked, but the point is you can try.
In Breath of the Wild, you can head off to fight the final boss Ganon right away. You’ll get your ass kicked, but the point is you can try.

Let’s start with the basics. The most appealing basic description of an open world game is the ability to go anywhere and do anything. With this in mind, why do so many developers gate off their massive worlds? By not allowing players to enter certain places, game developers are imposing linearity onto them. Linearity is the arch-enemy of open world game design. In well-designed open world games, the entire world should be explorable from the beginning.  A perfect example of a freeform open world would be the one featured in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

In Breath of the Wild, the player gets every major tool they need in the very beginning. Armed with their hang glider and Sheikah Slate (which grants access to several world-altering abilities), the player can now freely access any point on the entire map. This is not to say that the map is easy to explore, however. The player must carefully prepare for the various areas of the map, such as wearing warm clothing and cooking hot food before exploring a snowy mountain.

In Breath of the Wild, exploration isn’t limited by having special items or filling out a skill tree, it’s limited by the player’s knowledge of the world and its mechanics. By giving players every major tool they’ll need at the beginning, the game encourages players to get creative within the game’s sandbox in order to explore every inch of the world. A balance must be struck where players are able to access every part of the world, but the difficulty of navigating new areas must depend on the player’s creativity.

Let players experiment in a sandbox

This ramp in GTA V is more fun than many full games
This ramp in GTA V is more fun than some full games

While some use the terms “open world” and “sandbox” interchangeably, they aren’t quite the same thing. Games with sandbox designs have the player creating some of their own fun by experimenting deeply with the world and the systems at play. For example, the chemistry engine of Breath of the Wild allows players to light grass on fire, causing an updraft and allowing players to fly and get to hard to reach areas. Not all successful open world games have sandbox elements (Skyrim notably doesn’t really feature any deep sandbox systems to play around with, and relies more on the strength of its writing and worldbuilding), but sandbox elements can add a much-needed sense of depth and replayability.

Perhaps the best example of sandbox open world design is the Grand Theft Auto series. The highly detailed physics system of modern GTA games makes simple objects like ramps a lot of fun to play around with. You can use ramps to try and get on top of tall buildings, fly as far as you can in a sports car, or do flips and tricks on a motorbike. While these actions don’t grant any sort of reward to the player, the ability to do all kinds of fun things with a simple ramp demonstrates that sandbox systems allow players to personalize their experience and create their own fun.

The best-designed sandbox systems allow the player to create an infinite amount of gameplay scenarios with simple, easy to understand game mechanics and interactions.

Make traveling the world fun

Just Cause's gadgets make navigating the world one of the most fun parts of the game
Just Cause’s gadgets make navigating the world one of the most fun parts of the game

As technology has improved, open worlds have gotten bigger and bigger. In poorly designed open world games, the world is not filled with enough things to do, making traveling from place to place tedious and uninteresting. To get around this, most open world games incorporate fast travel, allowing the player to instantly teleport to specific locations.  The problem with fast travel is that players will miss content by skipping around the world, as a lot of the fun of open world games is encountering small events or quests as you travel from one major location to another.

The solution to both problems is to make traveling the world a fun experience in itself. Several games have engaging movement systems that make traveling fun, including Spider-Man’s web swinging and Breath of the Wild’s hang glider, but the shining example of open world movement is the Just Cause series.

In the Just Cause series, you have two major tools to get around the island: the grappling hook and the wingsuit. The grappling hook allows you to quickly attach to any object, quickly pulling you towards it. You can press the jump button at any time to let go of the hook and fly forward, conserving your momentum and allowing you to quickly and precisely fly through the air. Your wingsuit allows you to take this momentum and use it to fly, allowing the player to soar through the air and make quick evasive maneuvers like barrel rolls. By combining these two actions, players have a huge amount of freedom in how they want to fly through the air towards their next objective.

These movement systems are easy to pick up but difficult to master, allowing skilled players to chain together death-defying stunts. With a movement system like this, you’ll never want to use fast travel, and all open world games should strive towards making their world fun to travel.

Make exploration its own reward

Minecraft does a great job of creating a sense of discovery
Minecraft does a great job of creating a sense of discovery

In poorly designed open world games, your map is filled with an endless number of icons, missions, and objectives. Giving the player all of these objectives discourages exploration and can make the player feel like they’re playing the game wrong for avoiding them. Waypoints and guidance are fine, but they must be obtained naturally, such as by talking to an NPC or finding a clue. It is fine for the game to have objectives, but the player shouldn’t feel pigeonholed into only completing objectives. Exploration and discovery is the core of the open world genre, and the best open world games encourage players to explore the world how they want.

Minecraft is a unique game in that it does not have any defined objectives. Instead, the player is just dropped into a randomly generated world and it’s up to them to figure out where they want to go and what they want to do. Since the world is randomly generated, there will always be new places to explore no matter how many times you start a new save. As the player gathers tools and resources, they’re able to explore farther and farther from their base. This combination of exploration and progression is a hallmark of the open world genre, and similarly free-flowing games like Breath of the Wild have clearly taken inspiration. The appeal of Minecraft’s survival mode is the ability to tell your own story by adventuring through a world in your own unique way for your own unique reasons. You don’t need a million objectives and scripted moments to make an immersive open world, you need a world that creates a sense of discovery that makes it worth exploring.

What are your favorite open world games? Any other suggestions? Let us know!
