Holy Santa Clauses, Batman!

And at the end of this comic, Batman and Superman offer a membership card to, exactly, Santa Claus! It has been 84 years since his first appearance in Superman’s Christmas Adventure, and since then he has gone through various crises, side adventures, and imaginary worlds. He even faced Lobo in his Christmas special! What no one expected is that after so much time, he would finally formalize his status with the Justice League. It was about time.

The reason for hiring him is that “They want the League to be able to face any threat”, and Santa receives him with honors: “Indeed, it has been nice going on adventures with you. It reminded me of another time with friends from long ago. What better way to wish us a Happy New Year?

We will have a new Batman Arkham! But it’s not what you expect

It’s an exclusive for Meta Quest 3. Yes, try to contain the squeals of joy.

When, back in August 2009, ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ hit the shelves of video game stores, many of us knew it was the beginning of a new franchise. The problem is that we didn’t expect it to deteriorate so quickly. It took only three more games (‘City’, ‘Origins’, and ‘Knight’) for the saga to completely fall apart with mistakes like ‘Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’ or the mobile game ‘Arkham Underground’. But we didn’t see this coming.

What’s happening in VR

The next game in the franchise, in a spiral towards nonsense, is ‘Batman: Arkham Shadow’, which finally continues the franchise ten years after its last installment and of which we only know two things. One, the official description, which adds nothing new (“Evil is in the streets. Gotham City is in danger. And only you can stop it”). And two, that it is an exclusive for Meta Quest 3. Yes, try to contain the screams of joy.

This is not the first virtual reality game in the saga (that would be ‘Batman Arkham VR’, which didn’t even have combat and focused on puzzles), but that’s not a relief. This doesn’t mean that ‘Arkham Shadow’ is going to be bad, but it is a shame that so few people will be able to try it. After all, Meta Quest 3 costs over 500 euros, and I have my doubts that a Batman game is going to convince people that this is what they need in their life.

The 30-second teaser introduces us to Batman chasing a rat, which leads us to believe that the current villain will be Ratcatcher, a fifth-rate bad guy that makes us think that maybe the game is not intended as a new main installment, after all. That’s what we have.

Bruce Wayne is about to publicly reveal that he is Batman and turn over more than 85 years of history

Batman’s problem is different: after 85 years of keeping Bruce Wayne separate from the bat, little by little, the circle is closing in on him.

This summer, issue number 150 of Batman will be released. Well, it’s not the real 150th issue, of course, but the one from this stage (we’re actually looking at thousands and thousands of issues since its debut in 1939). But this time there’s a slight difference: he’s ready to unmask himself in front of the whole world, just like Spider-man did after ‘Civil War’. Spoiler: that didn’t turn out well for the web-slinger, with a series of disasters that culminated in Mephisto making him forget his marriage to Mary Jane. Maybe it will turn out better for the Dark Knight.

Bat-Wayne

It’s really more of a slight intuition than a reality. But it begins to be sensed on the horizon, especially now that the two titular heroes of DC have their secret civilian identities: Clark Kent returned to being a friendly reporter last year, when Lex Luthor telepathically erased the memory of absolutely everyone about who Superman really is. Batman’s problem is different: after 85 years of hiding Bruce Wayne from the bat, little by little the noose is tightening in front of him.

The worst of his enemies, in this case, is The Penguin, who in his new series seems to know who is really hiding under the hood. In fact, he has just received a warning to go visit him, and now he controls a gigantic group of supervillains who are dying to attack whoever is under the bat-mantle. The revelation would put the masked man in serious trouble, but there’s more.

It turns out that one of the henchmen who works for Catwoman also accidentally discovered the secret a few months ago, and it doesn’t seem like he’s one to keep things quiet. Oh, yes, Joker knows it too. And Question, who bought Wayne Manor. And meanwhile, Batman has been on a hallucinogenic journey for months. It wouldn’t be surprising if, upon his return, he finds out that either the villains have revealed his name, or it’s about time he does it himself. Eight decades to reach this pivotal point in his life. Will they dare in DC? Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

DC revives one of its strangest ideas: Batman against three different Jokers.

DC, instead of leaving the story forgotten like so many others, has decided to redouble its efforts.

If you’ve only seen the Batman movies, you’re probably wondering what on earth we’re talking about. Batman against one Joker, as it’s been since Adam West did the series in the 60s, right? Well… not exactly. We have to go back to 2020 when Geoff Johns planted a seed in DC that no one had picked up until now: What if it turns out that the Joker, actually… is three different people?

The joker bad luck

Three Jokers: the Criminal, in the early days of the character, much more serious and methodical than the others; the Clown, who came up with very strange plans in the DC comics of the 50s and 60s; and the Trickster, the most current and malicious, apparently the original Joker. The original story had much more to it, of course: the killer of Bruce Wayne’s parents died in a hospital bed, the Joker’s wife was pregnant in a witness protection program, and the Jokers kill each other until only the Trickster is left alive. Quite a story.

In the following years, doubts persisted about the continuity of this crazy idea, despite the writer’s insistence that it was canon in the comics and had nothing to do with parallel realities or alternate worlds. Now, instead of letting the story be forgotten like many others, DC has decided to double down on their efforts.

It was in issue 125 of ‘Batman,’ which marked the beginning of Chip Zdarsky as the series’ writer, where the return of this wild idea was hinted at: in a dream, the trio of Jokers is waiting for him, alive and well, confirming that the original story did indeed happen. However, there are not just three Jokers; at least two more have appeared in the series ‘The Man Who Laughed’ and ‘Harley Quinn.’ Instead of sweeping their failed storylines under the rug, DC has decided to step on the gas and see where it takes us. We recently saw a battle involving 13 Joker clones, so everything is yet to be decided. Let the bat-madness begin!

Warner Bros Confirms Batman: Arkham Trilogy Release Date For Nintendo Switch

Batman: Arkham Trilogy already has a publication date, so that all fans of the franchise can enjoy it on their Switches before the end of the year

Superheroes never go out of style. Even if they may seem a bit down on their luck now, that doesn’t mean they aren’t still much beloved and don’t have a dedicated audience behind them. Among the most cherished is, of course, Batman. Alongside Spider-Man, he has the distinguished honor of being one of the two superheroes who not only boasts the greatest number of video games throughout history but also the highest quality ones. This leads us to suspect that being associated with a totemic animal might grant you powers beyond fiction as well.

Recently, it was announced that the Batman: Arkham Trilogy would be released for the Nintendo Switch. This compilation includes all three Batman: Arkham games—Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, and Batman: Arkham Knight—available to play natively on the Switch. With all the DLC included, it was good news all around. But the most important piece of information was missing: the release date. And now we know.

Batman: Arkham Trilogy is scheduled to launch on the Nintendo Switch on October 13th, both in digital format via the Nintendo eShop and in physical format. However, please note that the cartridge will only include the first game, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and to play the rest, you will need to download them as well.

This compilation is a golden opportunity to once again enjoy this fantastic trilogy of games or to experience it for the first time. Because Batman never gets old. And somehow, neither do the Arkham games.

The impossible (but true) relationship between Batman… and Paris Hilton

Batman. Lord of the Night. Guardian of Gotham. Friend of Paris Hilton’s great-grandfather. Okay, no, wait a minute, what?! Just as you read it: the 42-year-old billionaire could, technically, stroll through the pages of the Batman at any time because it is more than stipulated that the two live together in the same universe. Don’t believe it? Fasten your bat-belt because this story is not to be believed.

Holy Hiltons, Batman!

Surely you remember some of the ridiculous ‘Batman’ covers from the 50s: Batman and Robin meet the three musketeers, fight against El Papagayo in South America, adopt the Bat-dog, become a mermaid… Every month, three absolutely bizarre adventures awaited children at a time when superhero comics were nothing more than a diversion for kids. The good thing is that the hero was not a universal icon, and these absurdities remained only in children’s playgrounds… Until 1966 came along.

A few years earlier, the arrival of ‘The Fantastic Four’ broke superhero comics in two: for the first time, Marvel showed that more or less mature stories could be made, even if they were aimed at children. Comic books crossed the borders of schools and reached universities: DC could not be left behind, and in 1964 Carmine Infantino reimagined Batman with a darker, more realistic tone and a new costume that could not show off enough. The culprit, William Dozier, an ABC producer tasked with making a series about a certain masked superhero I had never heard of.

It mattered little that Infantino and John Broome were changing the history of comics at the time: Dozier bought a dozen Batman comics, including a compilation of stories from the 1950s (the 1965 ‘Giant Batman Annual’), and assumed that the character had not evolved at all. Said and done: the 1966 series starring Adam West would be exactly that campy, absurd and unabashed. But that’s another story. For the moment let’s use it to understand the context.

Press that presses you

The TV series changed everything. Suddenly, Batman was born for many people who began to wear his logo on T-shirts, hats, cards, toys and every kind of merchandising imaginable. It was such a success that, as if it were ‘The Simpsons’ now, celebrities began to line up to have a part in the series. Bruce Lee, Otto Preminger, Jerry Lewis, Joan Collins, Zsa Zsa Gabor… Everyone who was anyone in the 60’s consciously made a fool of themselves in ‘Batman’.

The series was such a success that it managed to revive newspaper strips that had not appeared in American newspapers for a couple of decades. Only that, this time, they would be based on television episodes. Whitney Ellsworth and Joe Giella were in charge of it and, above all, of drawing the guest stars. If they were on TV, they had to be in the comics too, right?

January 1967. Batman and Robin encounter a man sitting in the Batmobile (“Strange! Who would do such a thing in Gotham City?” says our hero). His name would remain a mystery until the next day, but the more seasoned reader would get to see the realistic caricature of Conrad Hilton. Hilton was born in 1887 and at the age of twenty was already in the hotel business. In fact, the world’s first hotel chain was (and is) named after him: he was famous to everyone… even Batman!

Bat-hotel, sweet Bat-hotel

Hilton appeared in the strip to ask for help with the Batman Hotel he had designed (“Holy Taj Mahal!” says Robin) in which the waitresses wore Robin-inspired uniforms and the five-square-mile lake was designed with the Masked Crusader’s logo. It even had a golf bat-car that, as Batman notes, “It runs on BATs, surely.” This Batman, the things he has.

In reality, as you can see, it’s all a plan by Poison Ivy to rob the hotel guests, but that’s not what matters to us. What is certain is that Conrad Hilton’s appearance in the comic book caused an uproar in the hotel industry. After all, this was free publicity for his chain… And, apparently, advertising was denied in the press that brought out the daily strip. Don’t think that, after the controversy, he would say little: from January to March, Paris Hilton’s great-great-grandfather became a regular in the adventures of the Dynamic Duo.

Specifically, March 17 was the end of Conrad Hilton in the Batman strips, once Poison Ivy was caught. He never came out again and the role of guest star was taken by the comic Jack Benny. It’s clear, then: Paris Hilton and Batman could still team up in a crazy crossover – who knows? Stranger things have happened.

Watch: final ‘Joker’ trailer gives us first look at Robert De Niro

Still too early to tell whether or not ‘Joker’ will be the saving grace DC needs.

Joker

With just a little more than a month until it comes out, the final trailer for “Joker” has given us the first look at Robert De Niro’s character.

De Niro is playing Murray Franklin, a Johnny Carson-like character who mocks Joker during his late-night talk show.

It looks like Franklin might be the final straw that causes Joker to snap and become the Clown Prince of Crime. After being shunned by society, getting the snot kicked out of him, and finally mocked so publicly, Joker looks like he finally wants to get even with the world.

It’s still up for debate whether or not “Joker” will be a hit or a flop. It could be just what DC needs to get out of their slump, or it could be high school theater.

We’ll keep our hopes up for now, but we’d highly recommend that you wait for the first reviews to come out before you see this one for yourself.

Kevin Conroy to play live action Batman

Maybe the most famous version of Batman will finally step into the spotlight.

If you ever watched Batman cartoons growing up, were a fan of the Justice League TV series, or played any of the games in the Arkham or Injustice series, you’ve heard Kevin Conroy. His deep, sonorous, honorable voice has become practically synonymous with the vengeful, brooding Dark Knight, and at this point, if someone besides Conroy is behind the mic, it doesn’t feel authentic.

After over 25 years of playing Batman he’s taken the character practically anywhere there is to go. He’s even done musical numbers. Despite all the work Conroy has done as Batman, he’s never played the caped crusader live before – until now.

The CW recently announced that Conroy has been cast to play an older Bruce Wayne in the upcoming “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” a series that will span two quarters and consist of “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” “Legends of Tomorrow,” and “Batwoman.”

The crossover series will air between December and January, and is set to be five episodes total.

While it’s unlikely we’ll get to see Conroy donning a bat suit, seeing him play an older, more grizzled Bruce Wayne will be incredibly cool. As always, we can’t imagine better casting for the part.

Are you looking forward to “Crisis on Infinite Earths?” Let us know in the comments below if you’re planning to tune in for the even, and stick with Sofonic for more Batman news!

DCEU movies ranked from worst to best

There are good DCEU movies? You’ll have to read to find out!

Superman

While Marvel kept making hit after hit with its cinematic universe, DC just never seemed to get it right. While some of the films have small, cult followings, most people agree that pretty much every film in the DC Extended Universe is hot garbage.

From bad casting, to bad writing, to REALLY bad special effects, there is a lot of muck to sift through. However, the DCEU does have a shining light amongst all of the trash. What is that shining light you may ask? You’ll just have to read to find out.

DCEU movies ranked from worst to best

7. Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad
#NotMyJoker

This movie is about as far from “squad goals” as you can get.

“Suicide Squad” was a movie that was ruined by its production team. Basically, the MCU was making tons of money with movies that were universally loved. The DCEU was turning into a laughing stock after “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” deflated any interest fans had in the series.

In an attempt to regain the support of fans, the DCEU filmmakers decided that the smartest thing to do was to make “Suicide Squad” more like an MCU movie. Halfway through the making of “Suicide Squad,” Warner Bros. spent millions of dollars to make the movie more “lighthearted.”

What was the result? One of the worst superhero movies ever created.

The movie made next to no sense. It’s about Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) wanting to create a league of meta-humans that would be able to take down a Superman-level threat. The problem is that her plan is stupid!

First off, trying to make a team of heroes out of a bunch of villains is a horrible idea. Aside from Enchantress, none of the members of the Suicide Squad really seem that threatening. The rest of the members just feel like a typical Tuesday for Batman.

Also, adding Harley Quinn to the squad (who has nothing to bring to the table) just means that you will have Joker on your tail. Speaking of the Joker…

This was the worst on-screen Joker we have ever seen. When we first saw him with his tats and grills, we knew something was wrong. Think about it: can you picture the Joker, the most clinically insane individual on the planet, sit perfectly still for multiple tattoos? The answer is “absolutely not.”

From the awful story, to the poorly executed characters, to the sub-par action, “Suicide Squad” failed to be DC’s saving grace and instead became their ultimate nightmare.

6. “Justice League”

Steppenwolf
Who even remembers this guy’s name?

Let’s go back to 2012 when “The Avengers” was coming to theaters. At the time, it was one of the most highly anticipated movies in history. For the most part, it lived up to the hype. However, when looking back on the MCU as a whole, it was a bit middle-of-the-road. Despite all of that, the movie still made a boatload of money and was the MCU’s highest-grossing film at the time.

When “Justice League” came to theaters, it had one of the worst box offices in the entire DCEU. This was absolute proof that the hype was dead. Fans have been begging for a Justice League movie for years. Even though we finally got one, fans knew that these filmmakers were going to screw it up. As much as the fans didn’t care, the filmmakers clearly cared even less.

The movie was awful. It had an incredibly forgettable villain, a forgettable story, and beloved characters played by forgettable actors. Heck, when crafting this list, we actually forgot this movie was even made!

The movie just seemed incredibly poorly timed. Only half of the members of the Justice League had prior movies establishing their characters. Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman had none of that. Instead, the filmmakers had to hope that the people that actually came to see this trash were all fans of the comics and had done their research. Unfortunately, even if you read the comics, you were going to still be confused throughout the movie.

It’s not as unwatchable as “Suicide Squad,” but it’s two hours of your life that you’ll never get back.

5. “Aquaman”

Ocean Master
I didn’t know Shredder from Ninja Turtles was in this movie!

“Aquaman” felt like it was made by a bunch of frat boys one step away from flunking out of school. The movie is basically just one-liners and Jason Momoa smoldering for the camera. Just watch this:

The acting is absolutely atrocious. If “Game of Thrones” taught us anything about Jason Momoa, it’s that he is at his best when he isn’t talking. Every line out of the lord of the bro-cean’s mouth is ridiculously cheesy.

The movie actually did exceptionally well at the box office. Thanks to foreign ticket sales, the movie made more than $1 billion.

That’s not to say that the movie isn’t garbage. It’s painfully hard to get through. Do yourself a favor let this flick sink to the bottom of the ocean.

4. “Man of Steel”

Superman
The S stands for “Sucks,” because this movie really really sucks.

Superman is a hard character to get right.

He’s a god living among men and he’s trying to find out how to fit in the world. To be fair, that’s what “Man of Steel” explores. The only problem is that it gets everything wrong in the process.

While Superman struggles to find his purpose in “Man of Steel,” we as the audience struggle to get through the movie. “Man of Steel” was the first movie in the DCEU, and boy-oh-boy did it give it a rocky start. Need an example? Watch the most pointless death in any superhero movie:

The movie is infamous for being overly dark, joyless, and even colorless.

The main problem with the movie is that they hired the brainless robot Henry Cavill to play Superman. He’s definitely no Christopher Reeve, but he’s also just not a very good actor. Granted, the writers don’t give him much to work with:

If you think Cavill’s acting as Superman is hokey, just take a look at Michael Shannon as General Zod:

Director Zac Snyder watched that line delivery and said, “Yeah, that was good. Let’s go with that take.”

“Man of Steel” could have been the start of DC’s golden age of comic book movies. Instead, it was the start of a long series of disappointments.

3. “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice”

Lex Luthor
Could you imagine what would’ve happened if HIS mother’s name was Martha?!?!

It’s really easy to hate this movie.

From start to finish, “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” is poor decision after poor decision. From casting Jesse Eisenberg to play Lex Luthor, to the world’s greatest detective falling for a middle school level scheme, to… “Martha,” the movie is awful.

You’re probably asking yourself, “If this movie is so bad, then why is it so close to the top?” Well, a lot of it has to do with the fact that it doesn’t have much in terms of competition. Secondly, the movie does have a few redeemable qualities. First off, Ben Affleck does a phenomenal job as Batman. The character’s worst qualities clearly aren’t Affleck’s fault, but the fault of the writers.

Secondly, although a lot of the action is pretty lame, this scene is awesome:

This one scene of Batman kicking butt is the best action scene in the entire DCEU.

What made this movie rub so many people the wrong way is because this could have been the greatest superhero movie ever created. Buried beneath all of the bad CGI and awful writing there is a good movie somewhere in here.  Those who watch DC’s animated movies will tell you just how good “The Dark Knight Returns” is. The two movies contain what most agree is the best on-screen confrontation between the Son of Krypton and Bat of Gotham.

Dawn of Justice couldn’t even channel a fraction of that film’s energy, and instead became the living meme we all know today.

The film’s biggest issue lies in how much it tries to cram in. It has to establish Batman, establish Lex Luthor, create the Batman versus Superman story, set up the Justice League, introduce Wonder Woman, introduce and execute Doomsday, and then play out the Death of Superman storyline. It fails on all accounts and just comes off as a bloated mess.

2. “Wonder Woman”

Ares
Eat some chocolate, Professor Lupin. You’re not you when you’re hungry.

“Wonder Woman” is far from a perfect film. However, it does deserve most of the praise it gets.

The story and characters were the best the DCEU had given us by far up until this point. Wonder Woman was likable, and she was thrown into a story that made perfect sense for her character.

The movie plays a lot like “Captain America: The First Avenger,” as it takes place during a World War with the main character out to defeat the overwhelming German forces. However, it is also a fish-out-of-water story as Wonder Woman struggles to learn how to live in our world after being raised with the Amazons. In this sense, it’s a lot like “Thor.”

The movie does have two pretty big issues. The first is the special effects. A lot of the action scenes look pretty bad.

Gal Gadot’s fight choreography is fine, but when she jumps around fighting people, the special effects look about as convincing as middle school theater.

The second worst part is the villain. Wonder Woman believes that the God of War Ares (sorry, Kratos) is the cause of all the suffering going on in the world. At first, it looks like Ares isn’t real. At this point, you think the movie is going to actually be pretty smart by showing that humans are flawed and that there aren’t always supernatural causes for our misdoings. However, Ares then reveals himself resulting in quite possibly the worst villain casting of all time.

Who was chosen to play the God of War? Why, Professor Lupin from Harry Potter, of course!

He isn’t the least bit threatening. He looks like a complete dork throwing a hissy-fit. Rather than feeling scared, you just laugh at the screen as the poindexter tries to act all-powerful.

All in all, “Wonder Woman” is a decent flick by DCEU standards, but it is far from a great superhero movie.

1. “Shazam!”

Shazam
My face when I made a better movie than Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Joker, and Aquaman.

If you were to have gone back in time to when we were in elementary school and would’ve told us, “In the future, there is going to be an Aquaman movie, a Batman vs. Superman movie, and a Justice League movie, but they’re all going to suck. However, there is going to be an awesome Shazam movie,” we would’ve called you insane.

However, that was exactly the case. “Shazam!” is a blast from start to finish. The DCEU filmmakers decided that rather than trying to make a cinematic universe, a dark film, or a something monumental, they would just make something fun. “Fun” is the best way to describe this flick.

If we had to nitpick at one part of the movie, it would be the special effects. Sometimes the movie looks like a PlayStation 2 game.

The dogs in “Ghostbusters” look more convincing.

However, it doesn’t take away from the rest of the film.

Zachary Levi does a great job of playing a child in a superhero’s body. He’s believably cocky and arrogant while also being hilariously awkward when trying to interact with people.

The main character Billy Batson is a likable kid with a rough past. It’s very easy to get invested in him and to root for him to succeed. When he gets his powers, he does what any other kid with superpowers could do; he tests them and makes YouTube videos. This results in quite possibly the best scene in the entire DCEU:

If “Shazam!” were an MCU film, we would probably put it between “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” on our list. The fact that we think this movie is better than almost half of the movies in the MCU is crazy given the fact that pretty much everything else on here would plummet to the bottom of the list.

“Shazam!” is far from a perfect movie, and it is nowhere near the level of movies like “Avengers: Endgame.” However, it is easily the best movie the DCEU has to offer.

Wrapping up

If you happened to like one of the movies we ripped apart, more power to you. We’ll just agree to disagree. There are a ton of Marvel movies with issues, but the DCEU just seems to get it wrong over and over again. With that being said, we would like nothing more than to see great movies involving these characters.

The main thing DC needs now is time. The movie industry is so saturated with superhero flicks that DC needs to wait for things to die down before throwing their hat back into the ring. Once some time has passed, they should be able to get some fresh ideas on what to do with these beloved characters.
