Naruto returns in a crossover that we never saw coming

Naruto will have a totally unexpected crossover with the Ninja Turtles that, although we still don’t know the details, it won’t take long to see.

Although Naruto ended a few years ago, its impact remains intact. Partly thanks to the serialization of Boruto, which follows the adventures of his son with the same name, and partly because it is a manga and an anime that has had a great impact on an entire generation. That’s why it’s not surprising that it continues to appear everywhere, including having crossovers with other comic book characters, some of which are also ninjas. Although, let’s be honest: we didn’t see this crossover coming.

IDW Publishing has confirmed that they will release a crossover between Naruto and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in October. Although we don’t have many details about the series, we do know that there will be both a physical and digital version, and that the cover art is done by Jorge Jimenez. Entitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto, it will be a miniseries; all other details are yet to be confirmed—including the writers, the artists (if they are different from Jimenez), and the story of the comic itself.

This will be the first time that Naruto and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cross paths. Although official crossovers by manga characters are not common, the Ninja Turtles have already fought with or against numerous other comic book characters, so it’s not a surprise on that front. What the relationship between this unlikely group will be is something we will have to wait until October to see, although it’s hard to imagine how Naruto couldn’t feel at home among a group of outcasts addicted to eating pizza and helping the homeless.

Inside Out 2 will have a sequel… Although, for now, only in the comics!

Don’t worry: seeing the unabashed international success that Inside Out 2 is having, there will be a third part, fourth, fifth, television series, and spin-off. Don’t doubt it. We are going to follow Riley until she becomes a mother, for sure. But that’s still a long way off. If you’re one of those who can’t wait and needs more Anxiety, Shame, Joy, and other emotions, you’re in luck, because Disney is going to release sequels… in comic book form.

The best feeling: getting money

In this case, there will be four stories under the title The New Adventures of Inside Out 2 in which Riley will have to deal with a haunted cabin at summer camp, attend her first teenage pool party, encounter an unexpected surprise (probably a pimple) before taking the yearbook photo, and more. Did you think playing hockey was the worst thing that could happen to her?

Obviously, the comic will be released when the movie is already profitable, around October, and it is unknown if it will be a canon for the future of the franchise. For now, at Pixar they can jump for joy: after so much trial and error at the box office, they have finally pressed the right keys to succeed again in a big way. Goodbye, Anxiety. Hello, Joy.

Spider-Man wants to kill Mary Jane. How did we get to this!?

You might be surprised to open a comic today and find that Spiderman wants to kill his lifelong love. But why? Can we know what happened?

Mary Jane Watson first appeared in a Spider-Man comic in June 1965. Since then, she became such an essential character that in the last sixty years, there have been kisses, sorrows, jealousies, weddings, and even a daughter, whose fate is better left unasked in the Marvel universe. She has been Peter Parker’s love interest almost from the beginning, although only a few writers like Straczinsky truly understood the couple instead of subjecting them to unnecessary continuous torment. That’s why you might be surprised to open a comic today and find Spider-Man wanting to kill his lifelong love. But why? Can you find out what happened?

Black Spider-Man

We told you here that Spidey ended up receiving the sins of Norman Osborn injected into him and became the Black Goblin. And what seemed like a saga with a lot of potential ended up being nothing, once again. Let’s not forget that during this (terrible) phase, Mary Jane remained in an alternate reality for years, where she ended up marrying and having children -apparently imaginary- with someone named Paul, who overnight became the most hated guy among the fans.

Now Peter is out of control in the comic after burying Kraven (well, his son) and leaving a gun next to him. It’s the moment to end his lifelong love out of pure hatred, and while at it, end Paul too. In fact, he almost succeeds: he drops her from a great height without realizing that Mary Jane now has powers -seriously, this is happening– and can easily save herself.

But when the final battle between them is about to begin, which would have been something more or less epic, Norman Osborn manages to rid himself of his sins, and there’s peace and then glory. “Oh, I’m sorry, dear, it wasn’t really me,” “It’s okay,” “You didn’t do anything wrong,” and so on. And in the end, even after killing innocent people, he decides that just putting on the Spider-Man suit will make everything right again. No remorse or anything.

There have been rough patches in Spider-Man’s storyline, but very few like this one. It’s worth mentioning because rarely has a fandom united so strongly against a writer. Perhaps during the ‘One More Day’ storyline, where the couple’s marriage was reset, or during the clone saga, the public outcry came close, but what’s happening now is unforgivable. So much so that readers are eagerly discussing the possibility that it’s all a dream, that MJ is a Skrull, or that it will be revealed that it was all a Mephisto’s deception in some way. Being accustomed to misfortunes with a character is one thing, but… well, this is something else entirely. Forgettable.

Ideafix, Obélix's dog, could have been called Patracourcix, but the public saved him

The magazine where the weekly issues were published, decided to hold a contest so that the readers themselves could decide the name of the mascot. Because, deep down, it was a little bit of him too.

“The two enter a store with the sign ‘Charcuterie – Ultramarines’. A small dog is at the door.” Believe it or not, these were the words of the first script in which Goscinny introduced the world to a character who would later be key to the adventures of Asterix and Obelix. It was the Gauls’ fifth comic book, ‘The Return to Gaul’, and the little dog Ideafix had just been born.

A million bones!

At the end of that comic, in which Uderzo occasionally drew the little dog chasing the Gauls, Obelix decided to adopt him by giving him a bone. However, his name would not be revealed until the next issue, ‘Asterix and Cleopatra’. And there was a good reason for this: the magazine where the weekly issues were published, ‘Pilote’, decided to hold a contest so that the readers themselves could decide the name of the mascot. Because, deep down, it was a little bit theirs too.

From the call in issue 209 of ‘Pilote’, readers began to send in their own proposals. Uderzo himself recalls that they received fairly regular names such as Patracourcix or Papeurdurix, but four participants who did not know each other proposed the same name: Idéfix, which sounds like “fixed idea” (idée fixe), and which in Spanish had a simple translation: Ideafix. For the cartoonist, “It was perfect! It was an animal with a fixed idea: to find a bone.

Luckily, he was saved from other names that were proposed such as Trépetix, Paindépix, Toutousanprix or Minimix. It’s been 60 years since Ideafix’s debut and he’s still giving us something to talk about: in fact, in 2021 he was given his own TV series and accompanying comics. Ah! In case you’re curious, we have a dog for a while: in ‘Asterix and Latraviata’, from 2001, he was the father of a gigantic litter. Maybe one of his offspring could be named Patracourcix. Hey, who knows, it could be names!

The official comic you won’t believe exists: ‘The Political Adventures of Zipi and Zape’

No matter what you believe: you are not ready for ‘The Political Adventures of Zipi and Zape’.

There are times when unofficial comics or fanzines pretend to be official versions, causing confusion. The well-known adult parody that Cassanyes created for Mortadelo (‘Mortalelo’), for example, but what I bring to you today is not quite like that. It’s the story of two kids who had always wanted bike vouchers and suddenly found themselves in a senseless and inexplicable political mess that was reproduced weekly in the magazine ‘Tiempo.’ No matter what you believe: you’re not prepared for ‘The Political Adventures of Zipi and Zape.’

Swapping bikes for votes

This strange comic was released from July to November 1988, with Josep Escobar handling the artwork, even at the ripe age of 80, and written by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, the author of ‘Pepe Carvalho,’ in a less than stellar form. He might have been a genius in many things, but certainly, comic book scripting was not his forte. This is an absolutely insane and completely unserious oddity that no one can take seriously.

In the comic strips, Zipi and Zape find themselves on different political sides, and Don Pantuflo tries to unite Spain by founding the “Central and Centered Party”: a wild and absurd storyline in which basically the politicians of the time, from Felipe González to Julio Anguita, made appearances in the 18 two-page episodes that have never been compiled and are part of the darkest corners of Spanish comic history.

This was a comic in which Escobar’s immortal characters didn’t express themselves by saying “¡Zapateta!” or “¡Diantres!” but rather “Jilipoyas” (sic) and “Lameculos.” An absolute eccentricity only suitable for the most dedicated Spanish comic collectors, but it was worth rescuing. Oh, and indeed: in the end, Pantuflo Zapatilla doesn’t win the Spanish elections. It was to be expected, by golly.
