Nintendo has taken a bold step in its approach to video game development by deciding to cut content from its acclaimed title, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, in order to integrate it into another project: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. This decision, which has sparked both praise and criticism, demonstrates Nintendo’s meticulousness in polishing its releases before launch, thus ensuring a more complete and satisfying experience for players.

Cut and Paste

The game director, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, stated in an interview that this secret was crucial to avoid excessively extending the plot of Tears of the Kingdom. Unlike its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, which received additional content post-launch, Tears of the Kingdom was designed with a closed narrative, leaving room for certain narrative elements to be explored in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

One of the aspects that generated confusion among fans was the presentation of the Sages in Tears of the Kingdom, who appear without a clear development. These figures, representative of the Zora, Gerudo, Goron, and Rito races, are shown with masks in flashbacks, leaving many wondering about their identity and role in the story. Fortunately, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity provides answers to these questions by recounting events from the past and Zelda’s mission as she travels through time.

This interconnected narrative approach reinforces the depth of the universe of The Legend of Zelda, allowing fans to explore additional stories and expand their understanding of the rich history of Hyrule. In this way, Nintendo demonstrates not only its ability to create memorable titles but also its skill in weaving narratives innovatively, setting a new standard in video game storytelling.

Nintendo has announced that the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on June 5, although it will not include a new main title in the Legend of Zelda saga. However, the launch is accompanied by enhanced versions of the acclaimed games The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, which promise to offer players a renewed experience on the new console.

An app that aims to change how we play these two games

One of the most notable features of these new releases is Zelda Notes, a mobile function that will make it easier for players to exchange items between both games. Additionally, these items can be shared with friends using the Nintendo Switch mobile app. During a demonstration at Nintendo Treehouse: Live, it was shown how Link’s character was able to receive a war hammer from another player through this exchange system.

Despite the exciting possibilities that Zelda Notes offers, there are significant restrictions. Items that are exclusive to Tears of the Kingdom will change when transferred to Breath of the Wild. However, players of Tears of the Kingdom will be able to use this feature to share autobuild blueprints via QR codes and also benefit from a navigation option to reach difficult locations.

In addition, new Amiibo are being released that will include characters such as Tulin, Yunobo, Sidon, Riju, and Mineru’s Construct, which will be available on launch day along with the games. Players who already own any of the previous versions of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom on the original console will have the option to purchase the editions for Switch 2 via download, at no additional cost for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. It is important to note that the Zelda Notes feature will not require a subscription for access.

During the recent live broadcast from Nintendo, comparisons were shown between Breath of the Wild running on the Nintendo Switch and its imminent successor, the Switch 2. Although the 2017 game has been acclaimed for its immense open world, its performance on the original Switch presents notable limitations. At 30fps, the colors appear dull and the details are blurry, with an overall feeling that the world of Hyrule cannot be enjoyed in all its splendor.

A remarkable improvement for an excellent game

However, the images of Breath of the Wild on Switch 2 reveal a considerable improvement, with vibrant colors and much sharper details. The vegetation showcases multiple shades of green and phenomena like dust and fog have a better visual representation. This version not only promises a rejuvenated aesthetic but also offers loading times that are five times faster, significantly transforming the gaming experience.

The players who followed the broadcast expressed their frustration in the chat, asking for a reduction in prices, suggesting that not everyone is happy with the cost of the new console. However, the advancements are not limited to just the visuals; Link’s movements on the new console are noticeably smoother, adding a crucial component to the gameplay that fans of the saga have been waiting for.

Additionally, the new Knockout Tour mode for Mario Kart was mentioned, which allows races with up to 24 players. Although little information was provided about it, the introduction of this mode has been described as a revolution in the field of racing, which promises to keep players on edge about future updates and releases from Nintendo.

Finally, an indie game has dared to imitate Breath of the Wild, only now with deeper combat

The upcoming open-world game, The Knightling, is catching the attention of fans thanks to its clear inspiration from the iconic entries of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. What sets The Knightling apart is its innovative approach to the protagonist’s shield, which serves multiple functions within the game, from melee weapon and throwable weapon to glider, parry, and slow-motion attack. This core mechanic is not only crucial for combat but also for navigating a 3D world designed for players to effectively slide their shield across ramps and speed boosters.

A game clearly inspired by the latest Zelda

The first details of the demo of The Knightling, tested during the Steam Next Fest, reveal an entertaining and charming experience, although some critics have noted that the world feels somewhat empty compared to the masterpieces of Zelda. In this demo version, players explore picturesque hills, interacting with NPCs and collecting treasures, but the lack of density and dynamism in the setting may limit immersion.

Despite the criticism regarding its current state, The Knightling shows great potential, especially thanks to its brilliant artistic style and lively soundtrack, which complements the cheerful energy of the game. The protagonist’s movements are fluid and responsive, offering satisfying moments, such as perfect stops during battles, suggesting that there are more surprises and gameplay mechanics to discover in the full version.

Although the game still does not have a release date and presents a sense of incompleteness, its promise of improvements and updates in the future suggests that it could become a strong contender in the 3D platformer category, in a world where comparisons with classic titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Wind Waker are already emerging. Fans are eagerly awaiting more information about this exciting project from Twirlbound.

The impossible story of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Nintendo DS

Nintendo fans are still without news of Switch 2 (a tip: check out its Reddit forum, with people absolutely desperate to find and follow obviously false clues), so we have to console ourselves with what we have. Sometimes it’s a new game like Mario Party Jamboree, and other times, well, a ‘demake’ of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild that has been found on a Nintendo DS. You might have raised your eyebrows wondering ‘Sorry, what do you mean?’ And yes. Exactly that.

ZelDS

Imagine buying an old flashcard on AliExpress and what you receive contains a remake of Breath of the Wild made for Nintendo DS, with all the pixel luxury. Well, that’s what someone found, unable to believe what was happening. Was it an experiment by Nintendo? Who had done this? What was going on? The solution is usually far less exciting than any movie we imagine in our heads.

In 2019, the first images of this demake appeared on BilliBilli, the Chinese YouTube, but this ROM confirms its real existence. After weeks of arduous searching and investigations that would put the FBI to shame, the creator finally made an appearance on Twitter. His name, Ermelber, might leave you completely indifferent (what did you expect, that it was Shigeru Miyamoto in person?), but what he says is frankly interesting and a lesson for the next supposed conspiracy we concoct on the Internet.

‘It seems that an old ROM from a project I was working on with friends has leaked online. It’s very amusing to see people speculate about it as if it were an obscure piece of entertainment from a mysterious Chinese developer, when it’s simply something we made several years ago, LMAO.’ Indeed: if you were hoping that Nintendo was going to resurrect its console to release a demake of one of its most well-known games, I’m sorry to burst your bubble.

However, no one denies Ermelber something obvious: it is an act of love, truly beautiful and with a lot of merit. Now all that’s left is for someone to complete the project by spending several years of their life so that a few of us can enjoy it. It’s not asking too much, is it?

Where do the last two Zelda games fit into its story? According to Nintendo, nowhere

I’m going to confess something that may invalidate me as a fan of Zelda: I have never cared at all about where in the saga their games are located. Of course, it is impossible not to know the timeline with its three variations (Fallen Hero, Child Hero, Lost Hero) that come from Ocarina of Time. However, it becomes tiring to see fans trying to figure out where to place Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom for years. Especially when the solution is, apparently… nowhere.

Zelda: Lost in Time

According to Nintendo itself, fans’ attempts to include them in the saga have been useless, because they are completely independent in their own version of Hyrule. And, to be honest, it makes sense: Nintendo was practically forced to put order in the Hyrule Historia book, making it clear that what is told over the years is much bigger than it seems.

All this has been known because at Nintendo Live 2024 held in Sydney (Australia), we have been able to see a timeline that connects the 19 games, starting with Skyward Sword and continuing with The Minish Cap and Four Swords before starting the different timelines with Ocarina of Time. And on one side of these, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were completely separate.

Gamers, who need order in their lives, have already placed it in a new timeline alongside Age of Calamity, which was not even officially part of the saga until now. It is also worth noting that in this timeline they seem to have forgotten about Echoes of Wisdom, but it is most likely close to Link’s Awakening. Anyway, time (literally) will tell.
