Firaxis Games is facing a strong wave of criticism following the release of its latest title, Civilization 7. More than a month after its debut, fan expectations have been overshadowed by a dissatisfied player base, which points out issues with the user interface and the game’s building system. Critics emphasize that, especially at higher difficulty levels, the lack of adequate information makes it difficult to plan the strategy needed for the development of a successful empire. So what has the company done about this problem?

The vast world of mods

Despite the fact that the study has made improvements in certain areas, the problems with the interface persist without an official solution in sight. Players have pointed out that the system does not provide the necessary details to maximize resource acquisition, which is crucial in a game of this nature. In this context, a beta mod has emerged as a beacon of hope. Developed by the creator of the popular mod Detailed Map Tacks, this new mod allows users to access a construction menu, calculate generated resources, and check the compatibility of buildings on the map.

Although the mod still requires adjustments to perfect certain calculations, it offers a tool for players who want to plan their expansions strategically. Its developer also intends to add features that incorporate the impact of technological advancements and policies on resource acquisition, which could further transform the gaming experience.

The world of modding has been crucial for the longevity of the Civilization saga, so much so that Firaxis has decided to hire a modder to help improve Civilization 7. In such a competitive 4X strategy game market, the pressure is on Firaxis to make significant changes that restore the trust of its fans and meet the high-quality standards that they expect from the series.

A new update for Civilization 7 will be released tomorrow, incorporating several features anticipated by the community. Among the most notable changes is the ability to perform ‘quick movement’ for armies and the option to rename settlements and commanders. This update also promises improvements to the user interface, an aspect that has received strong criticism since the game’s launch.

Civilization 7 is not a game that fans are enjoying

Since its debut on February 10, Civilization 7 has received mixed reviews. While the reviews have been favorable, they have not reached the level of enthusiasm that the developers at Firaxis and 2K Games expected. Currently, the user rating on Steam remains ‘mixed’, and the concurrent player counts are below those achieved by Civilization 6 and even Civilization 5, which was released 15 years ago.

User interface issues have been identified as one of the most critical aspects of the game. While fixes have been implemented through small quick updates, substantial improvements are still needed to make the gaming experience smoother. The latest update will also adjust game progression, increasing the costs of technologies and civics by 25%, which will further slow down the pace of advancement in the game. This includes reducing the progress gained from eliminating other players.

Creative director Ed Beach has stated that the intention is to strengthen the game’s structure, aiming for Civilization 7 to approach the quality of its predecessors over time. Although tomorrow’s update does not promise a radical change, it is expected to be a positive step towards improving the game. In this regard, it is rumored that future updates could more effectively address the persistent issues in gameplay and user experience.

In a scenario where Steam’s content has been flooded with clones of specific genres, REPO has managed to stand out among them. This game, which revolves around the idea of repossessing objects from unsettling buildings, has outsold Civilization 7 and has received an Extremely Positive rating with nearly 2,000 reviews on the platform. The phenomenon of REPO is partly due to its innovative approach to gameplay mechanics and its peculiar aesthetic.

Like Lethal Company, but with physics

REPO expands the gameplay of the classic Lethal Company, increasing the player limit from four to six. Additionally, it incorporates striking physics in its design, allowing players to lift objects of different weights through a telekinetic ray. This mechanic promotes cooperation among players, who can even lift each other to access new areas, adding a comedic element to the experience, as seen in the trailer showing a player being submerged in a toilet.

Another novelty is the hiding mechanics from the monsters lurking in the game. When a player is spotted, they can try to hide by compacting themselves to sneak under tables and other obstacles, which intensifies the tension and survival strategy in the game.

Currently in early access, REPO features three worlds and 19 enemies, as well as 29 equipment items and eight upgrades for players. Its release is scheduled between six and twelve months for the final version. The game is available for the price of 9.75 euros, with a launch discount of 20%. This release has generated great interest among the gaming community, and the developers have expressed their intention to work alongside the community to refine the game during its early access phase.

Civilization 7 continues its initial release disaster with an unpopular patch

A new update for Civilization 7 has been released, aimed at addressing various player complaints since its early access. Although the game will not officially launch until February 11, those who purchased the Founder’s Edition have had access since February 6. The initial reception has been complicated, starting with a ‘mostly negative’ rating that has escalated to ‘mixed’, but it remains a reflection of divided opinions.

Some minor aspects fixed, but at the cost of a greater functionality

User interface issues have been the most prominent complaints among players. The recent update aims to address a number of UI-related problems, along with fixing numerous bugs and gameplay issues. However, the game has disabled crossplay between PC and consoles to facilitate the implementation of these updates on the PC platform, while crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation will continue to function without issues.

The Firaxis studio, developer of the Civilization series, has declared its commitment to support Civilization 7 for years, an approach that aligns with the continued success of the franchise. Civ has proven to have a “long tail” of players, with thousands of people currently active in previous titles of the series. Despite the initial reception being somewhat alarming, Firaxis has no intentions of disengaging from the game anytime soon.

Nevertheless, the task of completely reorganizing the user interface represents a considerable challenge that may require more time and effort than simply adjusting the leader statistics. As developers continue to work on more substantial improvements, fans remain hopeful that Civilization 7 can reach its full potential in the near future.

Rockstar Games could change its approach with PC and surprise us with GTA

Rockstar Games has historically been known for its rigid approach to video game releases, especially in its most renowned franchises: Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. Since the release of GTA IV, the company has followed a pattern of first launching console versions, leaving PC players waiting between a year and a year and a half to access the corresponding versions. This has been the case with iconic titles like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, and even the first Red Dead Redemption never saw the light on PC.

GTA 6 for PC, maybe we won’t have to wait?

However, the landscape of the video game market is changing, and the recent statements from Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take Two, have highlighted the growing importance of the PC market. According to Zelnick, “we have seen that PC has become a much more important part of what used to be a console business”. This evolution is leading Rockstar to reconsider its release strategy, suggesting that the future could include simultaneous releases of versions for PC and console.

With the recent announcement of the trailer for GTA 6, the first versions will still be for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but there are indications that Rockstar is considering changes for future releases. It is speculated that, for GTA 7, the company could implement this new approach of simultaneous releases. The Civilization series, which recently launched Civilization 7 simultaneously on various platforms, could be serving as a model for this strategy.

However, PC fans will have to wait a little longer for GTA 6. Although changes are being made to Rockstar’s release policy, PC users will need to be patient, at least until the next installment of this iconic franchise is available in stores at the end of 2024.

The lack of updates had fueled distrust within the community, which was eager for more details about the game. However, with this confirmation, Take-Two not only reassures its followers but also promises an impressive launch campaign and other major titles for the coming year.

A year filled with great games for the company

In addition to GTA VI, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, has mentioned that the company plans major releases in 2025, including Civilization 7 scheduled for February 11, Mafia: The Old Country in summer, and Borderlands 4 before the end of the year. These releases highlight a year that could be a turning point for Take-Two, positioning the company on an upward trajectory within the video game industry.

This early access strategy, which has become common in the video game industry, allows a few lucky ones an early immersion into the new title of the acclaimed saga, giving the possibility to establish civilizations and manage historical figures from the first minute of access.

Civilization now has a greater emphasis on city management

For enthusiasts looking to enhance their experience, useful resources will be offered such as a victory guide and a manual for city management. These tools are essential, as effective management of municipalities and strategic planning are key to success in the game. With more than five days before the full release, players can start preparing to tackle the complexities of global domination.

The full release of Civilization 7 is scheduled for February 11 at 12 am EST, which means that many regions west of the US East Coast will see the release on February 10. As for the download, console players will enjoy a pre-load, while those on PC will have to wait until the release time to download the game.

Civilization 7 is expected not only to continue the traditions of its predecessors, but also to introduce new mechanics and strategies that will refresh the empire-building experience. As the release date approaches, the excitement and anticipation of the series’ followers grow. However, some rumors suggest that there might be additional surprises at the launch, although nothing has been confirmed yet.

Civilization 7 is shown to us with a great emphasis on towns and cities

The anticipated Civilization 7 brings with it a series of significant changes in the way players manage their civilizations, highlighting the introduction of villages, an innovative system that allows players to expand beyond the capital city. Unlike previous installments, where all settlements were cities, it is now possible to have only one city, with villages serving as centers of growth and specialization.

An Unprecedented Emphasis on Cities

The towns are fundamental in this new mechanic, as their growth is based on the accumulation of food, unlike the culture system in Civilization 6. Each time enough food is accumulated in a city or town, a new citizen is created who can add a new specialization to the locality. This allows for a more diversified and adaptable strategy throughout the game.

Buildings in cities are constructed through a production queue, while in towns they must be purchased with gold, which affects resource management and economic planning. Additionally, the placement of buildings in settlements influences their production and bonuses, adding a layer of spatial strategy to the game.

Rural resources also play a crucial role, as each reclaimed land provides bonuses to the civilization. Resources are classified into empire resources, city resources, and bonus resources, allowing for a richer management of the benefits they provide. However, one of the most notable features is the vulnerability of villages: their easy capture in conflict situations makes them strategic assets that frequently change hands.

Civilization 7 paves the way for a more dynamic and strategic experience, although it is not without controversy. Some players will miss the complexity of previous systems, but the new mechanics provide a fresh and accessible approach to the classic gameplay of the series.

Players who opt for the Deluxe or Founders editions will be able to start playing from February 6, five days before the official release date.

Some structural changes promise to change the dynamics of the game

This new title introduces an innovative structure of three ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Unlike previous installments where players remained within a specific civilization, in Civ 7 they will have the opportunity to choose new civilizations as they progress through the ages. This mechanic promises to give a new boost to the game’s dynamics, encouraging players to complete full campaigns. However, among fans, divisions have arisen, with some feeling that this change negatively impacts the continuity of the game.

Additionally, leaders will no longer be tied to the historical civilizations they come from, allowing for more creative choices, including figures like Niccolò Machiavelli and Harriet Tubman, in an effort to diversify representation in the game. Each phase of the game will conclude with a Crisis Event that will test players before progressing to the next age, adding an element of challenge to the strategy.

The anticipation for Civilization 7 feels palpable in the gaming community, with mixed opinions regarding its new age system and focus on gameplay. Reviews of the title will be published closer to its release, which generates more expectations as fans wait to see how these innovations will affect the traditional gaming experience of the series.
