2K is working on an unannounced remake, what game could it be?

2K está trabajando en el remake de un videojuego, según ha filtrado uno de sus trabajadores en LinkedIn, pero no sabemos de cuál se trata… todavía.

Working in the video-game industry and posting things LinkedIn is a risky business. With the number of projects that can’t be talked about, or worse, are in a state where it’s hard to know if they can be talked about or not, it’s easy to slip up. There are also other more ambiguous situations. When someone leaves the company and accidents aren’t so accidental. After all, they’re no longer employed by the company. But LinkedIn is already one of our most reliable sources to learn about new projects, and that’s how we hear all about 2K’s latest news.

According to the LinkedIn page of a 2K employee who works as a motion capture animator, 2K has been working on the remake of a video game for the past two and a half years. This person has also been working on WWE 2K25, NBA 2K25, the new Mafia game, and the new BioShock game, as well as two unannounced games– an unnamed sports title and an unannounced remake.

It’s not surprising that a studio of 2K’s caliber is developing a remake of one of its franchises. Although it’s true that we usually associate 2K with sports games, they have a great catalog of all kinds of games from which they could choose to make a remake. Especially now that the industry has clearly moved in that direction.

Although we don’t know which game it is, judging from the company’s catalog, there are numerous interesting possibilities. A remake of the first BioShock or Mafia seems most likely, since both franchises are beloved and have new installments coming. We shouldn’t rule out a remake of some Borderlands game, probably the second one, given the success of that one. Digging deeper into the catalog, there’s The Darkness, Spec Ops: The Line, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and Sid Meier’s Pirates! These may be less likely, but could be even more interesting remake possibilities.

In any case, nothing is confirmed. Although it’s practically certain that the remake will be of one of the above-mentioned games, this particular LinkedIn posting doesn’t give us any more clues. We’ll have to wait until 2K decides to reveal more to answer all our questions. Although it’s clear to us is that if you want to keep something a secret, it’s better that your employees don’t post it on their LinkedIn.

Spec Ops: The Line not only disappears from Steam: it is no longer accessible on any platform

Spec Ops: The Line not only disappears from Steam but is no longer accessible on any platform, making it a game that cannot be purchased.

Every day games disappear from digital stores. Not every day are games of such high profile like the cult classic Spec Ops: The Line. Vanishing from the Steam store without prior notice, it could not be purchased on the platform before it was removed. No explanation was given as to why this had happened, but it was also not removed from other digital platforms, as the game originally appeared for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation. Until now.

As of January 31, 2024, it is no longer possible to legally purchase Spec Ops: The Line on any digital platform. Even GOG, which is the store that has been standing the longest, has suddenly and without any ceremony removed the game. This has led to much speculation among players.

Despite everything, it seems that what has happened has little to do with possible conspiracies and a lot to do with poor communication from 2K. In addition to the classic problems of games with licensed music. According to 2K’s communication to journalist Stephen Totilo after he asked them about it, the removal of the game is due to the expiration of several songs’ licenses in the game. Something that forces them to stop selling the game immediately, as they did not renew them in advance.

If you’re not already familiar with it, Spec Ops: The Line is a third-person game developed by Yager Development that is inspired by Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness to tell a war story that narrates the horrors of war. It had a great critical reception, but it was not a bestseller. This made 2K consider it a failure.

Due to this, while it is possible for Spec Ops: The Line to return to stores, it seems unlikely to happen. Not when 2K considers the game a failure and has no particular interest in it. But if they paid the licenses, they could relist it in stores and put it up for sale. Something we hope will happen, as the game is a true masterpiece to remember.

Not only has no one heard about the launch of NBA 2K24, now the players are launching it

NBA2K24 has passed without pain or glory with its launch, and it would have been better if it had continued like this: those who have played say that it is a chestnut.

Many companies believe that nothing will harm their reputation, that no matter what they do or what practices they employ, people will continue to buy their games. And this is often true in the short and medium term. However, trust, while hard to lose, can also be eroded over time. That’s why it’s not surprising that if a franchise consistently makes questionable decisions, it will eventually face consequences.

That has been the case with NBA 2K24. According to Steam 250, a website that tracks the top 250 and bottom 100 rated games on Steam, the latest iteration of the 2K basketball game is currently ranked second on one of these lists. And it’s not the list the developers would want.

NBA 2K24 is the second-worst rated game on Steam right now. With “Overwhelmingly Negative” reviews, with only 11% of them being positive out of over 2,900 accumulated reviews, the game, which was released on September 8, hasn’t had a good start. This is quite surprising, but not excessively so, given the average score it has on Metacritic: a 67. This is a terrible score for a franchise that has historically maintained ratings above 80 and only once dropped just below that mark, with the infamous NBA 2K21 scoring a 68.

What has led to such negative reviews? Essentially, it’s the developers’ negligence. The PC version is based on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions rather than the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, which means it comes with certain compromises. The graphics are outdated, it lacks several game modes, and overall, it’s been treated as a lesser version of the game. When you add to that the very aggressive monetization in the game, the low ratings become self-explanatory. Even if 2K doesn’t like them.
