We are still in shock over one of the craziest changes in the motor world in more than a hundred years. Let’s explain it, just in case you haven’t heard everything that has happened.

Jaguar, one of the most prestigious brands in automotive history, and a company that can boast of having created the most beautiful car of all time (the Jaguar E-Type, according to the constructor and founder of Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari), decided to wipe the slate clean… forever.

A few days ago, Jaguar unveiled a bold and exuberant new visual identity that seems to have divided the brand’s fans between those who hate it and those who love the change. Honestly, there are more detractors than fans of the change in direction.

The car that the Pink Panther would drive

Now, hours before the official presentation at Miami Art Week, the company’s new concept car has been leaked, and we bet it’s going to be just as divisive.

The prototype, leaked on Coche Spias, is called Design Vision Concept and is much pinker than any Jaguar we’ve seen. It seems to be incredibly unfinished, with a very sparse interior and an exterior that somehow seems to lack polygons (yes, the Tesla Cybertruck and its low-resolution look come to mind).

The highlights of the new car include gigantic front and rear grills, super thin headlights, wheels that could serve for a semi-trailer, and the total absence of a rear window.

Jaguar had already previewed some details of the Design Vision Concept, but now we can see the car in full and from all angles. Take a look at the complete gallery on Coche Spias, and make sure to scroll down to see the rest of the photos.

Jaguar is working on a new production of an electric car, and it looks a bit like the Vision Concept, but we can’t shake the feeling that the new Jaguar is primarily interested in generating heated discussions in car forums.

This wireless charger for electric cars promises to charge your EV in one hour

Researchers at ORNL claim to have demonstrated the fastest and most powerful wireless charger for electric vehicles in history.

The biggest problem with electric cars is still their range and slow charging. Despite Tesla’s superchargers breaking records, charging times are much slower than refueling times for gasoline.

Tesla DOWNLOAD

Well, a new wireless charger for electric vehicles can fill a car’s battery with the same efficiency as a plug with a cable, with an innovative power of 100 kW, which opens up the possibility of fast, efficient, and very convenient charging by simply parking in a designated spot.

Wireless energy transfer was first demonstrated in the 1890s by Nikola Tesla. Nowadays, it is quite common in many households, where many people use wireless charging pads for phones, tablets, and electric toothbrushes, as well as induction cooktops.

Energy is transferred from the charger to the device through the interaction of electromagnetic fields, and what was once considered black magic is now considered a safe, convenient, and efficient way to get the job done.

However, it has not taken off in the world of electric vehicles, mainly because power levels have kept it out of the realm of fast charging. One of the fastest wireless charging pads available on the market for electric vehicles is the 12 kW Hevo pad.

It’s better than a wall socket; it’s a level 2 charging speed and would give you around 68 km of driving per hour with an average efficiency electric car (5.6 km/kWh). But it’s not what you would expect from a commercial charging station.

A wireless charger that charges the car in one hour

The researchers at ORNL claim to have demonstrated the fastest and most powerful wireless charger for electric vehicles in history, with a “lightweight design of polyphase electromagnetic coupling coil” that transfers energy more than eight times faster than the Hevo pad, enough to charge the same car about 563 km in one hour.

In the test, a receiving coil was installed in a Hyundai Kona EV, which was parked over a 14-inch diameter polyphase transmitter, with a five-inch air gap between them. The system was measured at 100 kW, with an efficiency of 96%, comparable to what would be obtained with a very good cable and plug.

Researchers point out that, in a laboratory test, conventional coil technology has transferred a power of 120 kW, but they claim that this is the best ever tested in a car, and that the design of the polyphase coil allows to obtain the highest power density in the smallest possible coils, making the system relatively compact and convenient.

Of course, for any wireless charging solution – including the one integrated into the road surface – to gain momentum, many things have to happen, starting with car manufacturers setting standards and incorporating receiver coils and charging equipment into their vehicles.

This is a situation that is biting its own tail: few manufacturers are installing the coils, since few companies are building the infrastructure on a large scale, and vice versa.

You will be able to drive Sony’s new electric car with the DualSense of your PS5

This is the third time the electric car is being presented at CES, and it looks almost the same as the last time we saw it, but the PS5 controller…

The best thing about CES is that technology companies spare no expense or resources to surprise us with each announcement. Sony has achieved this with the Afeela, their car manufactured in collaboration with Honda that can be driven with a remote control. Another one, like Xiaomi, joins the world of mobility.

The Sony press conference on the eve of CES 2024 served to showcase the synergies between its different media, gaming, and entertainment brands.

Izumi Kawanishi, President and Chief Operating Officer of Sony Honda Mobility, reintroduced the electric car Afeela by driving it on stage with a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller.

What do we know about Sony’s electric car?

You probably won’t be able to park your Sony EV with your PS5 controller when the brand starts manufacturing Afeela. Kawanishi was quick to point out that it was just a technical demonstration.

This is the third time the electric car is presented at CES and it looks almost the same as the last time we saw it, so it makes sense that a flashy presentation was needed to catch our attention.

However, Sony and Honda executives provided more details about the development of Afeela and now we know more about the entertainment and safety technologies that the joint venture of the Japanese companies will bring to the road.

It turns out that Afeela has more in common with your PS5 than the controller. To begin with, it uses Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.3 to power the three-dimensional graphics and visual effects that fill the huge widescreen dashboard.

Drivers and passengers will be able to enjoy detailed 3D maps, virtual spaces, and augmented reality views of the world surrounding the Afeela, to which metadata from the Internet can be overlaid. Users will also have access to multimedia content from Sony’s various catalogs of television shows, movies, and games to keep passengers entertained.

Unreal Engine is also used to render the simulated environments used to train Afeela’s multi-camera driver assistance systems.

The highly realistic graphics of UE5 are also used to enhance safety. The highly realistic simulated environments of the game engine allow for greater accuracy when training visual models and processing neural networks that power the driver assistance features of the EV.

Sony Honda Mobility also announced a new partnership with Microsoft to use the Azure AI cloud computing technology from the software giant in the development of Afeela.

The first Xiaomi electric car looks like this, and is… attractive?

The electric 4-door, 5-seater SU7 will go into series production in December 2023, with deliveries starting in February 2024.

It’s always been said that Xiaomi products offer the best value for money. And looking at the phones and other gadgets they sell each year, it’s hard to argue otherwise. But the electric car market was foreign to them… until now. After years of rumors, here we have Xiaomi’s first EV.

As we read in the specialized outlet CarNewsChina, Xiaomi has applied for a sales license for its first electric vehicle in China: the Xiaomi SU7 sedan.

The outlet has disclosed some specifications of the vehicle, which will be manufactured by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd (BAIC), not Xiaomi. You might recall this car by its codename: MS11.

In China, all cars must be approved by the local regulator before hitting the market, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) publishes a monthly list of vehicles that have undergone the homologation process.

Automobile manufacturers aren’t fond of this as it reveals photos and specifications of cars they haven’t yet launched. But for the press, it’s a valuable resource that’s highly appreciated.

Features of the anticipated Xiaomi car

The Xiaomi SU7 is an electric sedan with dimensions of 4997/1963/1455 mm and a wheelbase of 3000 mm. It will have two wheel options, 19″ and 20″. Xiaomi showcased two versions: one with lidar and one without lidar. The lidar is installed behind the front windshield.

We see a camera on the B-pillar in the images, suggesting that the Xiaomi SU7 might come with a facial recognition unlock feature.

The powertrain offers two options: the RWD with a 220 kW motor and the AWD with a maximum power of 495 kW (220 kW + 275 kW). The LFP battery pack comes from BYD for the cheaper trim, and the NMC ternary from CATL for a more expensive option.

The empty weight is 1,980 kg for the base model, with a top speed limited to 210 km/h. The higher-end model’s empty weight is 2,205 kg, and it can reach a maximum speed of 265 km/h.

According to MIIT filings, there are three versions: SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max. Some trims will feature an active rear spoiler.

The electric motor model is TZ220XS000, manufactured by United Automotive Electronics Co., Ltd. It will also include the ETC function, a system that enables drivers to automatically pay highway tolls without stopping the car.

The integrated system in the SU7 car will run on Xiaomi’s HyperOS, an internally developed operating system capable of functioning with both smartphones and cars.

The electric 4-door, 5-seater SU7 will begin serial production in December 2023, with deliveries starting in February 2024. BAIC’s factory in Beijing has already initiated trial production, and dozens of test vehicles have rolled off the production line.

Xiaomi announced its entry into the electric vehicle manufacturing race two and a half years ago, in March 2021, stating it would invest 10 billion yuan (1.4 billion dollars) in the project. In August 2023, Xiaomi registered the domain XiaomiEV.com.

Nissan envisions the future of the electric car in Europe

Little by little, the future is becoming more real. Not only in terms of robotic assistants and artificial intelligence, which are accumulating achievements day by day, but also in the field of energy transition. Until now, this field had been dominated by luxury brands and scarcely affordable prices (although there have been honorable exceptions like the eGolf), but Nissan has entered the playing field with a proposal that clearly outlines the automaker’s intentions. These plans have included the presentation of their new concept vehicle and the intention to electrify the continent.

A 7-year plan with 19 vehicles

Nissan’s design team in London has unveiled a new non-production vehicle called the Concept 20-23, which will not be released in the market. It features circular lights and a compact design more suited to European models than the larger chassis commonly found in the United States. This model’s unveiling is part of Nissan’s “Ambition 2030” plan, which aims to introduce 19 new electric vehicles to the market and electrify eight models currently in production. It’s worth noting that this plan is specifically targeted at the European market, where Nissan achieves about a third of its electric vehicle sales.

So far, the company has been selling hybrid and electric vehicles exclusively in Europe, including the “e-Power” Qashqai hybrid, Nissan X-Trail, Ariya EV, and the electric van Townstar. The electric version of the Nissan Micra will soon join these models, as well as another model yet to be revealed but under development at the Sunderland plant in the United Kingdom.

To support its ambitions, Nissan is working to reduce its battery manufacturing costs by 65% by 2028, transitioning to cheaper chemicals to replace cobalt. However, despite its intentions, it appears that the company has not made significant progress in this regard, so we will have to wait for further updates.

Batman’s car is Spanish, electric, and available for purchase

We like few things more than cars. We could say that superheroes. So when do the two get together? Pieces like DarkRebel come out.

We’ve all wanted to have Batman’s car. Admit it. It’s unique, powerful, black, and incredibly sporty. If it shoots missiles and withstands bombings, that’s Batman’s business; we love it for everything else. And now you can buy it.

Netflix DOWNLOAD

Well, not Batman’s car itself. It’s more like the closest thing we’ll find to Bruce Wayne’s car outside of comics and movies. And the best part is that the company responsible for creating this marvel is Spanish.

The Spanish brand Cupra (a subsidiary of SEAT) took advantage of this week’s International Mobility Show in Munich to unveil the DarkRebel EV.

A prototype that captivates anyone

The DarkRebel EV is one of the most attractive and distinctive prototypes we’ve ever seen… and the company announced its intention to bring it to market very soon.

Setting aside references to the Dark Knight, concept cars are built to gauge the public’s appetite for a new car, so if you’re as enamored as we are with the style of the new two-seater electric hot hatch, the Dark Rebel, head to your local dealership and let them know.

Realistically, this design is so visually appealing that it could become a trendsetter. Perhaps the only challenges to overcome would be how quickly the car can be prepared for mass production and the potential loss of its stylistic strength in the process.

The automotive industry is accustomed to presenting concept cars that often get watered down along the way, especially when the vehicle has to meet high safety standards.

However, there’s still hope to see the DarkRebel EV on the streets of our cities in a couple of years. It all depends on the genuine interest of potential customers.

CUPRA is part of the Volkswagen Group and is better known as the high-performance arm of the Spanish brand SEAT. By the way, for those who may not know, the name CUPRA derives from “Cup Racing.”

Rare Pikachu Cars from the 20th Century Spark Collectors’ Craze

Tons of merchandising for the saga have been made over the last 25 years, but none like the one we’re showing you today: the Pika-car.

If you think Pokémon is an invincible monster capable of devouring anything in its path, that’s because you didn’t live through the late ’90s when the first generation arrived on Game Boy, the anime was on everyone’s lips (even for the infamous seizure-inducing episodes), and Pikachu became nothing short of an icon. Countless merchandise items have been created for the franchise over the past 25 years, but none quite like the one we’re showcasing today: the Pika-car.

Pika-kar

Do you have a yellow-painted Volkswagen Beetle (the classic Beetle) with Pikachu‘s ears, tail, and cheeks in your house? If you said “No,” you’re a monster. If you said “Of course,” we have bad news: there were only twenty of them in the entire world in 1998. They were primarily used for events in the United States, but as the initial craze faded, they were largely forgotten… and now fans would give anything to have one, even though most of them have vanished.

One lucky person managed to find one. Grace Klich, an avid Pokémon collector, simply had to follow the trail. Some of these cars were given away during the premiere of ‘Pokémon 3,’ so she just had to track down one of the winners who lived two hours away from her. The winner eventually passed it on to a friend, who, many years later, sold it on Facebook for a low price. The car was in poor condition, but after spending over $6,000, it can now be driven on the streets of Virginia and showcased at comic conventions to earn some extra cash. Well, to each their own with their money…

There are still 19 more cars to be located. Parts of them have been found in different places (a tail here, an engine there), but it’s challenging to determine if another complete Pikachu car exists in the world. The ones made to promote Gold/Silver, a PT Cruiser with the color and shape of Lugia, are in better condition… although only five of them were produced. By the way, Klich, the collector mentioned earlier, also has one. Why would someone want two Poke-cars? The answer is, “Why not?”

Being a Pokémon collector is more than just a hobby; they consider themselves “archivists” in the sense that there is a lot of lost material that brought joy to an entire generation but now seems to be gone forever, from chewing gum wrappers to images of specialized stores, tournaments, or first-generation plush toys. Hey, who said being a fan was an easy and inexpensive task?

Lawrence Stroll: The Billionaire Backing Fernando Alonso’s Racing Comeback

Lawrence Stroll, the leader of Aston Martin, who convinced Fernando Alonso to join his body. But who is this gentleman?

If at 63 years of age the world catches us surrounded by race cars going 350 kilometers per hour without the need to take Trankimazines, we will know that we have succeeded in life. At least a little bit. This is the case of Lawrence Stroll, the leader of Aston Martin, who convinced Fernando Alonso to join his bodywork. But who is this gentleman? Should we know him beforehand? Would we want to be friends with a sexagenarian car racing fanatic? Let’s take a look at him.

F1 22 DOWNLOAD

Who is Lawrence Stroll?

Lawrence Stroll was born in Montreal in 1959 and is, right now, very close to being one of the thousand richest people in the world, according to Forbes. Specifically, he is the 1012nd person with the most money, managing $3 billion. Nothing, small change. It should be noted that although his position in the top has dropped (in 2020 he was in position 804), it is not because he has become poorer, but because other people have become richer.

What is this man doing in Formula 1?

After becoming a fashion totem in 2011 and selling his shares in 2014, Stroll took over a Formula One team, Force India, before becoming executive chairman of Aston Martin in 2020 after investing $235 million in the company. The weekly paycheck, wow. As part of the deal, Aston Martin returned to Formula 1 by transforming his team into the brand’s official team. His son, by the way, is part of the team. Nepo baby automobilist.

Why did you want Fernando Alonso?

As he has been there all his life, it sometimes seems to us that Fernando Alonso must already be on the verge of retirement, but the truth is that he is only 41 years old and still has a career ahead of him. After a few years away from Formula 1, he returned in July 2021 with Renault. He came tenth, improving on his 2018 ranking, where he was a little behind. He still has much to improve to return to the 2005-2006 era, but Alonso wanted a change of scenery and Stroll spoke with him to convince him: “These are my plans for the future,” he told him. And the Spaniard agreed. If only there were much more to tell.

How’s the alliance going?

Well… So far Alonso has three third place finishes in a long-term plan to win. Can the money of one and the instinct of another combine in success? Who knows. We’ll be here to watch (miles per hour permitting).
