The movie Predator: Badlands has recently gained prominence thanks to its release on streaming platforms and its physical format launch, which includes an audio commentary by director Dan Trachtenberg. In this commentary, Trachtenberg reveals that the original ending of the film featured a much more contemplative duel, inspired by the styles of Sergio Leone and Akira Kurosawa. However, after the audience reactions during test screenings, it was decided to modify this ending to satisfy the audience’s desire for more action between the central characters.

They finally decided on something different

The director mentions that the first decision was to add more Predators to the confrontations, culminating in a spectacular moment where Dek eliminates two of them in one blow. This quest for a more dynamic outcome reflects a need to do justice to the fans’ expectations, who wanted to see more confrontations after the intense tension of the film’s first acts.

Additionally, the visual confrontation between Dek and his father draws inspiration from scenes in Predator: Prey and from Shakespeare’s work Macbeth, which adds a rich background of cultural references. Trachtenberg also maintained the shocking sequence in which Bichito eats his father’s head, a moment designed to capture the audience’s attention, despite the absence of some characters in the previous scene.

Finally, regarding his doubts about how to close the film with the arrival of Dek’s mother, the director sought the advice of the iconic James Cameron, who provided his perspective on this ending. Predator: Badlands is now available for streaming on Disney+.

Hideo Kojima, the acclaimed video game director and filmmaker, has fervently praised the new movie Predator: Badlands, directed by Dan Trachtenberg. This film is the second of the year within the iconic Predator franchise, following Predator: Killer of Killers. Starring Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, the film focuses on a synthetic from Weyland-Yutani and a young Yautja, respectively.

An excellent movie in the eyes of the Japanese

Kojima, who recently experienced an accident that caused him back pain, shared his viewing experience on Twitter, highlighting that he is equipped with a “secret weapon”: an inflatable lumbar cushion. Despite his discomfort, he enjoyed the 107-minute screening, rating the movie as “great”.

Additionally, the director praised Trachtenberg’s previous work on Prey, a reboot that, in his opinion, managed to masterfully reflect the style of the classic from 1987. According to Kojima, Predator: Badlands continues this evolution, developing a more character-focused approach, such as the Predator Dek and his companion Thia, played by Fanning. This new installment moves away from the traditional hunting and horror narrative, offering an action-comedy experience that emphasizes friendship amidst conflict.

The renowned Japanese creator added that the film incorporates elements that are characteristic of contemporary Japanese manga, such as those found in Weekly Shonen Jump. He also mentioned the palpable influence of video games on the film’s aesthetics, pointing to a new direction that Hollywood can take under the guidance of a generation of filmmakers who have grown up with anime and gaming culture.

Kojima encourages young anime fans, who often avoid Hollywood live-action productions, to give Predator: Badlands a chance. With his “ugly face,” Dek manages to emotionally engage the viewer from the very first scene.

Critics like Drew Taylor from The Wrap describe it as “a tremendous achievement—fun, scary, thrilling, with memorable characters and creatures.”

A movie that breaks with what we expected from the character

Trachtenberg takes a risk by changing the traditional approach of the saga, presenting a narrative of “cosmic buddy road movie” instead of the usual horrific survival. The story follows a young yautja who, after being exiled from his clan, embarks on a journey of self-discovery alongside an unusual cyborg, played by Elle Fanning. These narrative choices have sparked both praise and criticism within the fan community.

Despite the praise, some more purist fans feel that the movie has not met their expectations. Phil Roberts from Future of the Force describes Predator: Badlands as “an epic spectacle,” but mentions that it “takes risks that are not always successful.” Josh Barton from Barton Reviews also comments that, while it could be “the weakest work of Trachtenberg in the franchise,” it is, nonetheless, an interesting expansion of the Predator universe.

As Predator: Badlands prepares for its theatrical release on November 7, many critics highlight that it is set to attract a broader audience by exploring new directions within the story. With the promise of exciting adventures and a reinvention of the original concept, this film could change the public’s perception of the franchise.

The inclusion of this character was already known, but the trailer suggests that there are deeper connections to the original Alien franchise that will surely keep fans intrigued.

A movie that will play the nostalgia factor

Among the surprises in the trailer is the appearance of space marines and a version of the P-5000 Powered Work Loader, the iconic equipment operated by Ripley in Aliens. These references not only evoke nostalgia among fans of the saga but also generate speculation about a possible shared universe with future installments that could include exciting crossovers between Alien and Predator.

Predator: Badlands is shaping up to be an exciting action movie and a worthy continuation of the acclaimed film Prey, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, which managed to revitalize the franchise. However, the current trend of making reboots filled with references to past movies can be a bit tedious for some, although there are notable exceptions. Still, the potential of seeing space marines and their equipment in the narrative is a plus, hinting at an expansion of the cinematic universe in the future.

The wait is getting shorter, as Predator: Badlands will premiere in theaters on November 7. This release could mark a new chapter not only for the Predator saga but also for the interconnectedness that fans have longed for between these iconic science fiction universes.

According to the director’s statements, working simultaneously on these projects has allowed him to explore different aspects of the saga and maintain his creative momentum.

A movie already released, another yet to be released

Killer of Killers is set in various eras, starting in 841 AD and following characters such as the Viking warrior Ursa, the ninja Kenji in feudal Japan, and a World War II pilot named John Torres. All these narratives intertwine in a way that will be considered canon within the franchise. For fans, this is especially significant, as it confirms the continuity and coherence of the saga through its diverse stories and characters. Additionally, since its premiere on Max, it has achieved great success among critics and audiences.

On its part, Badlands is scheduled to premiere on November 7 and is one of the most anticipated projects, as it introduces a marginalized Predator and a Weyland-Yutani robot, played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and Elle Fanning respectively. Although details about this movie are still scarce, the connection to the Alien universe has led to speculation about a possible joint project of Alien vs. Predator.

Recently, Fede Alvarez, when asked about his interest in directing an Alien vs. Predator movie, hinted that this could be a future possibility, suggesting a creative collaboration with Trachtenberg, in the style of famous duos in the film industry. The fan community is on the lookout, not only for new releases but also for the future direction of this iconic science fiction universe.

Predator may have finally found a way to return

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg and based on a script by Patrick Aison, Badlands represents the sixth installment of the saga and acts as an independent chapter, not linked to the recent partnership that Prey established on Hulu. Trachtenberg, known for his work on Prey, which set new viewing records on the platform, brings his distinctive vision to this new story, which promises to be different from what fans have seen so far.

The unexpected collaboration between a young Predator and Thia could signal a shift in the traditional narrative of the franchise, allowing for a deeper exploration of its characters. Rumors suggest that Predator: Badlands could be just the beginning of a new direction for the series, especially with a supposed development of Prey 2, which could see the return of Amber Midthunder.

The movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 7, marking a return to the big screen after the streaming experience of its predecessor. With the rise of curiosity about this new approach, fans of the franchise are eager to see what Badlands will have to offer.

A new series that promises to delight fans

The series will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg, known for his work on Prey, the latest film in the saga that was well received by critics and fans. With his new role at the helm of the franchise, Trachtenberg aims to bring the fearsome Predator to face not only the most iconic warriors in history but also various civilizations in different eras.

The first teaser shows us the Predator in three historical periods: the Viking era, where it will fight against Nordic warriors; the Heian period in Japan, with a confrontation against samurais; and during World War II, where it will be immersed in aerial battles against warplanes.
