During the filming of A Perfect World, Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner experienced a tense relationship that arose from their different approaches to directing and acting. Costner, who in the 90s was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, found himself in an uncomfortable situation, as the role he was playing was radically different from what he was used to. His well-known perfectionism clashed with Eastwood’s agile style, who is famous for doing few takes and moving quickly through production.
A rather extreme decision
One of the most remembered anecdotes from this conflict occurred when Eastwood was ready to film a scene, but Costner requested more time to be ready. Without hesitation, Eastwood made a drastic decision: he replaced Costner with an extra to avoid slowing down the filming process. This episode made clear the difference in styles between the two filmmakers. According to cinematographer Jack Green, this was the only time he saw Eastwood visibly angry on a film set.
Despite the tensions, A Perfect World ended up being a highly recognized film and is considered one of the best works of both talents. Throughout the filming, Costner suggested various ideas, emphasizing his belief that, although there can only be one director, multiple good ideas can coexist. However, this perspective contrasted with Eastwood’s authoritarian vision, who stated that his job was to make movies and not to deal with actors who did not show up at the agreed time.
To date, Costner and Eastwood have not collaborated on a project again, and both have avoided openly discussing the disagreements that arose during filming. It is speculated that, although they managed to resolve their differences momentarily, the shadow of that incident still lingers in the history of their film careers.
