Tesla Faces Rising Inventory Crisis as Unsold Cars Pile Up

Tesla Faces Rising Inventory Crisis as Unsold Cars Pile Up

Tesla is grappling with a significant inventory crisis that has seen the company resort to parking unsold vehicles in overflow lots away from its delivery centers.

Reports have surfaced of Tesla vehicles accumulating in locations not connected to its retail or service networks, including a partly demolished mall in Chesterfield, Missouri, where hundreds of unsold cars are parked due to limited capacity at a nearby delivery site.

Similar overflow lots have been identified in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and other states such as Nevada, Florida, and Ohio, highlighting a growing problem amid declining demand.

Tesla Faces Inventory Crisis as Unsold Vehicles Pile Up

Despite offering significant discounts and record-low lease rates, Tesla’s sales have plummeted, particularly for its much-anticipated Cybertruck. Sales of this model have dwindled by 50% compared to the previous year, prompting the company to reduce production levels in an attempt to prevent stockpiling.

Currently, over 3,000 unsold Cybertrucks remain in inventory, even as Tesla struggles to meet expectations for overall vehicle deliveries.

Analysts had initially projected that Tesla would deliver approximately 410,000 vehicles in the second quarter; however, current estimates suggest the automaker will only manage between 350,000 and 360,000 deliveries. This marks a stark drop of about 80,000 units from the same period last year.

Furthermore, Tesla’s struggles extend beyond the US market, with Canadian sales nearly non-existent, European markets experiencing a 40% decline, and Chinese sales down even with increased production of the Model Y.

As Tesla faces intensified competition in the electric vehicle market, shareholders may be forced to acknowledge the severity of the situation. With only two weeks remaining in the quarter and a mounting inventory problem, the automaker’s future strategies will be under scrutiny as it navigates these turbulent waters.

Texas lawmakers request delay of Tesla’s Robotaxi launch

Texas lawmakers request delay of Tesla’s Robotaxi launch

Texas lawmakers have officially requested that Tesla delay its planned launch of the Robotaxi service in Austin from its current date of June 22, 2025, to September 1, 2025.

The request comes in light of a new law aimed at enhancing safety and regulatory compliance regarding autonomous vehicles. This development could provide a convenient rationale for Tesla CEO Elon Musk as the company continues to navigate challenges in its autonomous driving roadmap.

Musk has previously described the Robotaxi service as “not really self-driving,” a statement that underscores the skepticism surrounding Tesla’s ability to deliver on its ambitious promises.

Texas Lawmakers Urge Tesla to Delay Robotaxi Launch Amid New Safety Regulations

The recent delay request from lawmakers might be seen as a lifeline for Tesla, allowing the company to cite regulatory compliance as a reason for postponement rather than admitting it is unprepared for the launch.

The new law introduces specific requirements that Tesla must meet to align with federal guidelines and SAE levels of autonomous driving. While Texas has largely operated with minimal regulations regarding autonomous vehicles, this legislation is an important step toward establishing a more structured framework. The law’s implementation could bolster public safety and trust in Tesla’s operations.

Furthermore, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has imposed a deadline for Tesla to respond to questions about the Robotaxi launch, adding pressure on the company to ensure compliance. As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain whether Tesla will opt to embrace the lawmakers’ request or proceed with its initial launch plans.

With increasing scrutiny on its autonomous technologies, Tesla’s decision will play a crucial role in shaping public perception and regulatory expectations. One thing is clear: this latest development has the potential to alter the trajectory of Tesla’s Robotaxi aspirations.

Is Tesla’s Market Momentum at Risk?

Is Tesla’s Market Momentum at Risk?

Tesla has announced a second pause in production of its Model Y and Cybertruck vehicles at Gigafactory Texas, extending the production shutdown from June 30 through the first week of July.

This decision comes less than two months after a previous halt, prompting concerns over diminishing demand and escalating inventory levels. Tesla’s move is aimed at conducting maintenance and implementing improvements on the production lines.

The automaker’s latest announcement follows a troubling trend, as Tesla recently reported a 13% drop in vehicle deliveries in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year.

Tesla has reportedly told employees that it will pause production at Gigafactory Texas, where it produces Model Y and Cybertruck vehicles, for the second time in as many months.

Tesla Extends Shutdown of Model Y and Cybertruck Production at Gigafactory Texas

Early projections for the second quarter indicate an even sharper decline, with expected deliveries down by 19-20%, equating to approximately 355,000-360,000 units. This situation persists despite the launch of cheaper versions of the Cybertruck and efforts to incentivize purchases through discounts and federal tax credits.

Sales of the Cybertruck have plummeted to half of their previous year’s figures, putting additional pressure on the company’s bottom line. As a response to this downturn, Tesla has been forced to rent out empty parking lots across the U.S. as overflow storage for its increasing inventory.

🚨 Tesla plans to pause production on Cybertruck and Model Y lines at its Austin factory for a week, starting June 30, with operations set to resume the following week.

Maybe new vehicles incoming? 👀$TSLA pic.twitter.com/4iB7PJRwEH

— Herbert Ong (@herbertong) June 17, 2025

Reports indicate that production capacity was already reduced to 60% at many factories in 2024 due to lower demand, raising questions about the company’s operational efficiency.

With the Fourth of July holiday around the corner, this extended shutdown raises concerns about Tesla’s ability to maintain market momentum and manage consumer expectations.

The repeated pauses in production of its flagship Model Y—and the associated design updates—underscore a growing uncertainty within the company about meeting its projected sales targets in a rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
