Justin Wiebe, design director at Ripple Effect, has shared details about the renewed capabilities of Portal in Battlefield 6. This tool allows players to create and share gaming experiences that surpass the limitations of previous versions. Wiebe emphasizes that in Battlefield 2042, Portal featured a limited set of creation tools and lacked persistent servers, factors that restricted the virality of user-created experiences. However, with the addition of a more robust level editor and persistent server functionality in Battlefield 6, the creation possibilities have significantly expanded.
Technical issues to be resolved
Despite its impressive potential, Portal has had a complicated start. Many players are still not accessing the experiences created due to a series of technical issues, such as confusing navigation in the menus. Wiebe mentions that the negative feedback about the current menus of Battlefield 6 has affected the visibility of the Portal section, which is relegated in an endless list of game modes. Currently, the lack of effective promotion and the difficulty in accessing the experiences are factors that limit the success of this tool.
Wiebe emphasizes the need for the study to address the critical technical issues that are preventing community creations from receiving the exposure they deserve. “What we are not doing well enough right now is highlighting the Portal experiences so that the rest of the community can play,” said Wiebe, expressing his desire for players to discover and enjoy the innovations that the community has created.
As Battlefield 6 continues to evolve, Wiebe remains optimistic about the future of Portal, hoping to resolve existing issues soon so that the section can thrive and become a central pillar of the gaming experience.
