For its part, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness improved artificial intelligence and usability, allowing its legacy to remain relevant even three decades after its release.

Recently, while discussing the beta tests of Creative Assembly’s RTS, Total War: Warhammer 3, they highlighted an issue that caused the game’s artificial intelligence to act excessively defensively, partly due to a bug that triggered an overreaction to the presence of a single hero. In response to these criticisms, the development team has outlined a series of improvements that will be implemented in the game’s AI.

Some changes that made the game more bearable

One of the main changes will include a reduction of the anti-player bias, allowing the AI to treat the player similarly to how it treats other AI factions. This will prevent the perception of risk posed by the player from being inflated, facilitating a continuous gameplay dynamic. Additionally, the distance scale will be adjusted, which currently drives the AI to stay at base more than desired, affecting the aggressiveness of foreign armies.

Likewise, it has been announced that the weaker factions will receive a boost that will improve their chances of survival, while those that traditionally excel will see a reduction in their potential. This implies that factions like Clan Moulder and the Death’s Head will have more opportunities to thrive, while factions like the Oracles of Tzeentch and the Cultures of Pleasure will face more difficulties. These changes aim to diversify the player experience and balance the game map.

Finally, significant corrections will be introduced that will affect the way AI factions use their specific campaign features. Additionally, the internal team at Creative Assembly has begun investigating possible changes to the siege system, suggesting that players may receive more details about this aspect of the game later in the summer.

This project focuses on a more indie style and aims to explore new subgenres and encourage experimentation, with the goal of publishing titles more frequently.

The game features a campy narrative, where Earth is invaded by Martians who deploy advanced technology, including flying saucers and floating tanks. L humanity’s only hope lies in the ‘Splice-O-Tron’, a device that allows human leaders to create supersoldiers by combining “volunteers” with terrestrial animals, giving rise to intriguing units like the fly-cheetah and the cow-squirrel infantry. As the campaign progresses, the Martians will also deploy their own mutant creatures.

A smaller game, but really complete

Earth vs Mars will feature a single-player campaign mode with over 30 missions, as well as online multiplayer modes, a versus mode, and a map editor that will allow players to create custom scenarios. This diversity in game modes aims to attract both genre fans and new players.

The announcement of Earth vs Mars comes at a complicated time for Relic, which has faced layoffs of over 150 employees and the sale by Sega. Now under the ownership of Emona Capital LLC, the studio aims to return to its roots as an independent creative firm. The release date is expected for the summer of 2024, initially only for PC, although there are possibilities that it will come to other platforms, depending on the reception it receives.

The narrative revolves around a resource called Tempest reminiscent of the tiberium from Command & Conquer, providing an interesting backdrop that frames the game’s combat dynamics. The story unfolds between two factions: the Global Defense Force (GDF) and the Tempest Dynasty, each with unique combat mechanics.

The game, developed with Unreal Engine 5, stands out for its striking visual aesthetics and the clarity with which intense battles are represented, even in chaotic situations. However, its fast pace can be overwhelming for less experienced players, and some design issues, such as unit movement and the lack of collision between them, affect the overall gameplay.
