In a recent interview, Holly Longdale, Vice President of World of Warcraft, emphasized the need to broaden the appeal of the Warcraft franchise, which has been a pillar in the video game industry for over 30 years. Longdale believes that Warcraft has been underutilized and seeks to connect the game with a wider audience, highlighting the importance of social interactions within the game.
War (and not so much peace)
Chris Metzen, former creative director of the Warcraft universe, commented that the name Warcraft might be intimidating for new players, which has sparked a debate about the brand’s identity. This reflection, although posed with some irony, raises the question whether the name can deter potential players, something Longdale countered: “No one thinks the same about Warhammer”. He assured that his goal is for more people to experience the Warcraft community and everything it has to offer.
Despite the criticism regarding its name and future direction, the franchise has maintained its status as one of the most successful in the sector, standing out in the world of online role-playing games. Longdale expressed her desire for new audiences to discover the potential of the game: “We want people to come in, have fun, and live memorable experiences, like weddings, raids, and new adventures”.
In another aspect, the new housing system that has been introduced in the World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion has been well received, indicating that Blizzard is willing to continue innovating within its universe. Continuing with this line of evolution, it is rumored that additional changes could arise in future releases that would make the game even more accessible and appealing to new players.
