Garry’s Mod, an iconic title in the gaming community, celebrates 20 years since its release in 2006, when it was offered at an affordable price of $10. This physics sandbox has allowed players to unleash their creativity, creating and sharing their own games and experiences. Its longevity and popularity are a testament to the impact it has had on game development culture.

It is not decided yet, but they don’t want it to be expensive

Now, Garry Newman, the creator of Garry’s Mod, is about to launch his new game creation platform, known as sandbox, scheduled for April. During a recent interview, Newman shared details about the future of this project and, although there is still no confirmed price, it was mentioned that it could be between $10 and $20. This ambiguity in pricing is understandable, considering that the people at Facepunch Studios, including COO Alistair McFarlane, also confirmed they do not have a definitive figure.

In the discussion about the price of sandbox, Newman and McFarlane showed a cautious attitude. “I think we decided that we are going to charge at the beginning,” Newman stated, while McFarlane suggested that the initial figure could be aligned with the price of Garry’s Mod. This fact is noteworthy, as it indicates the intention to offer an accessible product that follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, which has been so influential over two decades.

The announcement of the sandbox has generated great interest within the creator community, eagerly anticipating how this new tool could revolutionize the way games are developed and shared. With Newman’s commitment to keeping the price reasonable, it is likely that many new talents and veterans will find in the sandbox a platform to express their creativity and develop their ideas.

Many players have expressed their preference for Steam as the main platform for gaming, highlighting the inconvenience of having to resort to other launchers that require downloads, updates, and authentications. This is the case with the recent release of Hytale, a sandbox adventure game that is not available on Steam, forcing players to register and download a new launcher.

Do you have any issues with the game? They won’t give you a hard time

Despite the hassle of having to manage a new platform, Hytale offers an appealing compensation: its refund policy. While Steam allows returns only if games have been played for less than two hours within a two-week period from purchase, Hypixel Studios’ policy is more generous. Players can request a refund after playing up to four hours in Hytale, thus providing extra time to explore its vast worlds and systems.

This more flexible approach is especially beneficial in open-world games, where the first few minutes of gameplay often do not represent the full experience. Steam’s policy has been criticized for its rigidity, making players feel that they do not have enough time to truly evaluate a game.

It is important, however, that users carefully review the list of payment methods accepted by Hypixel Studios. Some of these methods do not allow for refunds, which could limit the options for those interested when purchasing Hytale. Although registering for a new service may be frustrating, the benefits of a more generous refund policy may outweigh the initial inconvenience of having to create a new account.

The creators of the indie Minecraft claim that they are going to revolutionize the procedural world generation system

Hytale, the highly anticipated open-world game that has captured the attention of the gaming community, will launch in early access next week. Hytale, the highly anticipated open-world game that has captured the attention of the gaming community, will launch in early access next week. The developers are revealing more details about their vision and plans just before this much-anticipated launch. One of the most significant features to be introduced after the launch is a renewed approach to world generation, which, according to founder Simon Collins-Laflamme, represents a “fundamental shift” in how sandbox games, similar to Minecraft, will create their play spaces in the future.

A sandbox that wants to take the virtues of Minecraft to another level

At the beginning of early access, Hytale’s exploration mode will still use the “V1” world generation system, which was developed between 2016 and 2020. However, the new “V2” system, in development since 2021, will eventually replace the former, promising significant changes. Although V2 will still be a procedural generation system, it will introduce more meaningful patterns defined by the designers. This will allow, for example, generators to create certain environments, such as dark-leaved trees over caves, which will guide players during their exploration.

Developers aim to provide modders with tools that allow them to create world generation parameters easily, without the need for programming knowledge. With a node-based editor, users will be able to modify world generation variables and see the changes reflected in real time. Collins-Laflamme states that “this new approach will redefine the block game genre”, giving artists and game designers complete control over the final outcome of world creation.

To carry out this ambitious vision, the Hytale team is hiring more than 15 world designers, an unusual decision for a procedurally generated sandbox game. “The vision of Hytale is to feel carefully crafted while remaining infinitely procedural,” adds Collins-Laflamme. The journey of Hytale has been challenging, and the leadership has admitted that “it’s a miracle that we were able to save” what was once a canceled project.

If you like stealth games, this game offers you stealth, puzzles, and an intriguing narrative

Eriksholm, a stealth game developed by River End Games, has been compared to previous titles from Mimimi Games, such as Shadow Tactics and Desperados III. However, Eriksholm moves away from the sandbox structure that characterizes those games, opting for a linear narrative and stealth encounters that must be resolved in a specific way. This approach sets it apart, although it also limits the experience by not offering multiple paths to tackle the challenges.

Eriksholm tries to be everything and although it stumbles, it is interesting

In Eriksholm, players take on the role of Hanna, a young woman who has recovered from an illness called Heartpox, which affects the city of Eriksholm and the colonial nation in which she lives. The disappearance of her brother Herman leads Hanna to embark on a solitary quest, plunging her into a world of stealth and puzzles. Although the game allows for stealthy tactics, the narrative comes across as the least convincing part, with archetypal characters lacking depth and a plot that feels superficial and problematic in its treatment of coloniality.

One of the strengths of Eriksholm lies in its detailed environmental design, which enriches the narrative through conversations and elements of the environment, even though the main plot fails to capture the player’s interest. Despite the simplicity of its stealth mechanics and the characters feeling one-dimensional, the title offers moments of tension and collaboration in its challenges, especially when controlling multiple characters, each with unique abilities.

Although Eriksholm may not have met narrative expectations, its focus on gameplay and stealth provides an entertaining experience. With the promise of a narrative unfolded through environmental details, future installments in this style are expected to offer more captivating stories.

An absolutely addictive game

The game, which has been compared to Minecraft, offers the addictive satisfaction of building factories and complex assembly lines. However, its appeal could turn into a long-term obsession, as many players have reported spending hundreds or even thousands of hours perfecting their creations and developing increasingly efficient systems. The recent update 1.1 has added exciting features, such as controller support, an elevator, and a conveyor belt flow monitor, further enhancing the building experience.

In addition to Satisfactory, Steam is celebrating its Automation Fest event, showcasing other factory-building games like Dyson Sphere Program and Shapez 2, offering a variety of options for those interested in automation and creation. However, players of titles like Satisfactory and Opus Magnum should be aware of the danger of losing track of time, neglecting basic needs like eating or showering.

With more Steam sales scheduled for the future, such as the strategy-focused 4X event in August, players have the opportunity to explore more titles that could capture their attention just as much. Those looking for a significant time investment in an addictive and rewarding game will find Satisfactory a tempting and perhaps dangerous option.

Riot Games has canceled its RPG inspired by Minecraft and the creator of Stardew Valley says he is inspired by it

Riot Games has decided to cancel the development of Hytale, a sandbox RPG inspired by Minecraft, which has sparked intense discussions about the possible resurrection of this project. Originally developed by Hypixel Studios, Hytale seemed to be progressing well until Riot, after five years of development without the expected progress, chose to abandon the project.

Eric Barone throws his hat into the ring

Simon Collins-Laflamme, founder of Hypixel Studios, has expressed his commitment to exploring the possibilities of reviving Hytale and has been in contact with Riot to discuss the available options. This interest rekindles the conversation about the future of the game at a time when the gaming community is enthusiastic about the possibility of a return.

An unexpected twist in this narrative came from Eric Barone, creator of Stardew Valley, who expressed his interest in Hytale through a message on Discord. Although Barone was open to learning more about the project, he clarified that he is not actively working on it, as his main focus is to finish his new game, Haunted Chocolatier. In a recent communication, he emphasized that he is completely absorbed in his upcoming release and that any potential collaboration on Hytale is not a priority on his current agenda.

However, the community has not stopped dreaming of a collaboration between Barone and Collins-Laflamme, even though the latter continues to move forward with his plan to revive Hytale. The situation becomes intriguing, as Barone, although curious, does not want to raise expectations about his involvement, being cautious given the previous development history that ended in cancellation. As time goes by, fans remain on the lookout for any announcement that could breathe new life into this ambitious project.

Dwarf Fortress, a dwarf colony simulator with a unique level of depth, has captured the attention of the gaming community for its complexities. Created by brothers Tarn and Zach Adams, this ambitious project started as a hobby over 20 years ago and has evolved into a benchmark in the genre, standing out for its rich simulation and detailed fantasy world.

Recently, Dwarf Fortress has received significant updates, including a new adventure mode that greatly enhances the gaming experience compared to the original version, which featured ASCII graphics. This refined version released on Steam has sold hundreds of thousands of copies, solidifying it as a “special” title among the vast array of video games available on digital platforms.

One of the most interesting aspects of Dwarf Fortress is its complex simulation, where even elements like beer can affect the health of the dwarves. This depth of gameplay leaves behind many titles that call themselves “sandbox,” creating an environment where every decision matters and can have unexpected consequences. For example, aquifers and other enemies present considerable challenges that can deplete the resources of a colony.

An absurdly complex and fascinating game

In a recent interview, Tarn Adams confessed his own fear of aquifers, revealing that he and his brother are not expert players and often struggle to develop advanced strategies in their own game. This personal vulnerability creates a special connection with the gaming community, which also faces the same difficulties during their gaming sessions.

As players explore and build their colonies, the risk of a disaster from floods or attacks by creatures like lizardmen is always present, demonstrating that, in the world of Dwarf Fortress, each game is a new adventure full of surprises and challenges.

Vibrant Visuals wants to make Minecraft a much prettier game… and it succeeds

Minecraft, released in 2009, has revolutionized the video game industry, establishing itself as the best-selling title in history with over 300 million copies. Its pixelated aesthetic and worlds built from blocks have created a unique and unmistakable legacy that has captured the imagination of players of all ages. However, the possibility of updating its visual appearance has always been on the horizon for the gaming community.

An update to make the game more spectacular

In response to this demand, Mojang, the game’s developer, has introduced Vibrant Visuals, an update that promises to enhance Minecraft’s graphics without altering gameplay. Announced during the Minecraft LIVE event, this new feature aims to modernize the game’s appearance through improvements in textures, lighting, volumetric fog, and reflections, while keeping the essence of the sandbox intact.

The update will first arrive in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on compatible devices, something that players received with enthusiasm, as they have requested official graphical improvements for years, without relying on external modifications like shaders or texture packs. Later, Vibrant Visuals will also be available in Minecraft Java Edition, although no exact release date has been specified. Mojang has indicated that the first changes will be seen in the coming months.

A notable aspect of this update is that existing worlds will remain intact after the implementation of Vibrant Visuals, allowing players to decide whether they want to apply the visual changes. This flexibility underscores Mojang’s commitment to satisfying its community without compromising the integrity of the gameplay experiences already built.

With Vibrant Visuals, Mojang not only seeks to enhance the aesthetics of Minecraft, but also to demonstrate that evolution and innovation are fundamental parts of its legacy, while continuing to explore new directions for the iconic title.
