Marvel's Wolverine is showcased in depth in the State of Play

Last night the State of Play took place where we saw a more extended first look at the gameplay of Marvel’s Wolverine. In this trailer, we discovered some details about the story and its mechanics, learning more about one of the most anticipated games of the year for Sony. Perhaps the most important and surprising aspect is everything related to the story level. The group of the Harvesters, a common anti-mutant faction in the comics especially at the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s, is kidnapping mutants for unknown purposes, while Wolverine is trying to rescue them. Last night the State of Play took place where we saw an extended first look at the gameplay of Marvel’s Wolverine. In this trailer, we discovered some details about the story and its mechanics, learning more about one of the most anticipated games of the year for Sony.

Perhaps the most important and surprising aspect is everything related to the history level. The group of Harvesters, a common anti-mutant faction in comics especially at the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s, is kidnapping mutants for unknown purposes, while Wolverine is trying to rescue them. Although this group is aware of the existence of mutants, most people do not know about their existence, which seems to confirm that the game will take place either between the 80s and the 90s, or in a new timeline.

During the trailer, several characters that we hadn’t seen before were also introduced. At one point, Jean Grey appears supporting Wolverine in battle with a design based on Grant Morrison’s New X-Men, but she is not the only new character featured in the trailer. Mystique, Omega Red, and Sabertooth also make an appearance in a supercut at the end of the trailer, showing that we are going to have some of the most iconic characters in Logan’s history.

Wolverine has no issues with violence

Additionally, we have been able to see how the game will be played. With certain platform elements, the emphasis will be on action. Extremely violent and with the ability to regenerate from wounds, we have seen that Wolverine is capable of entering a berserk mode that seems to give him greater abilities and also has the capacity to regenerate his health at least once per game thanks to his mutant abilities.

While we are still waiting to know the specific details, this trailer has helped give us a better perspective of the game. To learn more, we will have to wait until its release on September 15 exclusively for PlayStation 5.

The main event will last two and a half hours, totaling at least three hours of presentation. Fans will be able to follow it on various streaming platforms, including YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Live, TikTok Live, and IGN, among others. Extensive international coverage is also expected, with options for different regions such as Bilibili and Douyin in China.

An event that promises a lot

Among the surprises that could be announced during the ceremony, rumors suggest that Valve might reveal the long-awaited Half-Life 3, while new trailers for titles like Blade, Wolverine, and Silent Hill: Townfall are also anticipated. Additionally, Evanescence will perform live, singing their song Afterlife from the Netflix adaptation of Devil May Cry. These announcements and performances are part of what makes The Game Awards one of the most anticipated events in the video game industry.

Regarding the nominations, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stands out as one of the favorites to take home multiple awards. However, the ceremony has also left some fans disappointed, as critically acclaimed titles like Deltarune and Keeper did not receive any nominations. This kind of “snubs” often generates debate among followers and players, adding more excitement to the awards presentation.

As the date approaches, players and gaming enthusiasts are preparing for an event full of excitement and surprises that, in addition to rewarding the best in the industry, will serve as a platform for revelations that could change the landscape of video games in the coming year.

It's not the best time for superheroes in games, but Iron Man has a chance

The superhero video game industry has shown uneven growth in recent years, with standout titles like Batman Arkham and Marvel’s Spider-Man that are not directly linked to cinematic successes. The superhero video game industry has shown uneven growth in recent years, with standout titles like Batman Arkham and Marvel’s Spider-Man that are not directly linked to cinematic successes. However, recent cancellations, such as Wonder Woman, and failures like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, suggest that the sector still faces significant challenges and that superheroes are no longer what they used to be. Despite this landscape, several AAA projects continue to be in development, highlighting the highly anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine, developed by Insomniac, known for its successful Spider-Man saga.

Are people saturated with superheroes?

In addition to Wolverine, another title on the horizon is Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, of which some footage has already been shown, and an Iron Man project developed by EA Motive, about which little is known. This situation could change soon, as on March 17, during the Game Developers Conference (GDC), EA Motive will present a talk titled Advanced Graphics Summit: Revolutionizing Texture Pipelines: EA’s Journey with Texture Sets. This presentation will address experiences related to the development of Texture Sets for Dead Space and Iron Man, which could provide more information about the latter title.

In terms of technology, the new Iron Man game is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, which promises a high level of graphical quality. So far, the only available image corresponds to the moment of the project’s announcement, leaving fans waiting for more updates. While the gaming community anticipates news, the direct references to Iron Man at the GDC spark greater interest and speculation about the future of this franchise in the realm of video games. What we don’t know is whether it will be enough to rekindle interest in the world of superheroes.

Makeover

This new visual approach is complemented by the work of the main artist, Alessandro Cappuccio, who plays an essential role in the comic’s aesthetics. Created with attention to detail, the costume and visual components highlight a menacing air, while the narrative delves into blood and violence, seeking to evoke an intense feeling of fear and discomfort in readers. Additionally, the influence of Hannibal Lecter’s iconic muzzle adds an extra layer of unease to the already feared figure of Wolverine.

The story emphasizes the bloodiest aspects of Logan, presenting him covered in blood, both from enemies and allies. This representation is not just a visual resource; Condon seeks to explore the dark margins of the character, challenging the common perceptions that fans have of Wolverine, who have often seen him in more comedic and heroic roles, such as in Deadpool or Wolverine of 2023.

Given this narrative twist, it’s no surprise that many followers feel surprised and intimidated by this reimagining of the mutant. With promises of significant bloodshed and a dark atmosphere, Ultimate Wolverine #1 could become a captivating read for those seeking a more intense approach to the character in the comic book universe.
