Xbox games with gold: to May 15

Check out these three games you can play with Xbox Live Gold!

When we first picked up an Xbox Live Gold account, we assumed the best and only perk was playing online with friends.

How wrong we were!

Xbox Gold subscribers have the opportunity to download free games, three at a time, from all sorts of genres and developers. In the history of Gold Games, subscribers have been offered excellent titles, from Runbow to Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain!

If you’ve been missing out, now worries! You have time to get in on the fun.

Introducing the…

Xbox games with Gold: to May 15

Marooners (Ending 5/31)

MarooNERD

Need a new party game? Give “Marooners” a chance!

Step into the vaguely island world of Marooners, where everyone plays a small chibi-esque character hell-bent on destroying the others with bombs, boxing gloves, and environmental perils! Don’t get confused: different maps and mini games change, but the goal never does. Survive.

If you’re worried about wasting your time, don’t be! Marooners pushes you right into the action. You’ll figure out if the game’s for you real fast.

For our part, we enjoyed our trial run online and even won our final game! Thanks to the simple controls and lack of highly complex strategy, anybody can step into the fray and feel like a master within minutes. Combined with the rapid pace, your party will probably be laughing together in less time.

Verdict: if you have space on the hard drive, definitely download Marooners. Share it with some friends. Party hard.

Outcast: Second Contact

OutcastOof. Just oof.

Say hello to “Outcast: Second Contact.” Why second contact? Because it’s a remake (2017) of the original (2001) game, “Outcast.” The first received critical acclaim. Playing the 2017 version feels like sleeping in a wet cardboard box during winter.

Let’s go through the plot quickly: when an experimental portal threatens to create a black hole, Major Vernon recruits his old friend Cutter Slade, an alcoholic ex-marine, on a mission through the portal to save scientists, retrieve a probe, and stop the black hole.

It sounds cool, but don’t get excited. After the slogging, 14-minute opening cutscene, you arrive at the slowest opening tutorial in history. The controls feel weird, the user interface takes a while to figure out, the controller makes little sense, and the graphics and game design are okay at best.

What’s worse: this game isn’t that old yet! You know what other sci-fi/action/adventure games released in 2017 as well? Nier: Automata. Resident Evil 7. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Fortnite!

Verdict: some Games with Gold are legendary. Some are interesting and compelling deviations from the triple-A titles. But we won’t be playing this one for free.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon

EDF

Wow.

This game is…wow. But in a good way!

We didn’t expect to enjoy Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon (EDF:IA) as much as we did! It feels like the creator said, “Give me the destructible environment of Rampage with the horde battles of Destiny.”  Then someone said, “What about the storyline?” To which the creator responded, “Huh?”

Summary: aliens attacked earth. They have insects. Now, to borrow a quote from Left for Dead 4, your job is to “kill all sons of bitches.”

There are four classes of soldier. The normal guy, the submachine gun dude, the nearly indestructible tank, and the Iron Man suit-wearing soldier with unlimited homing missiles. As one of these venerable soldiers, you will fight ants, hornets, and alien spacecraft in defense of Earth.

The fighting can feel repetitive, but like we said, the same goes for Destiny. The graphics aren’t the best, but c’mon, it’s a 360 game. The story may be pretty shallow, but you get it, this game isn’t about plot. Frankly, we were surprised by how long it entertained us with new enemies, soldiers, and buildings to destroy.

The verdict: if you enjoy a shameless run-and-gun, give EDF:IA a try!

Conclusion

That ends the news on fresh Games with Gold until May 15. We hope you enjoyed the update and found something new to try!

GameStop killer: Microsoft announces Xbox without a disk drive

Microsoft announces an Xbox that only plays digital games. What does this mean for the industry?

Xbox digitial editionThat storage bin in your parent’s basement filled with your old NES cartridges might need to make room for your Xbox discs.

Presumably in response to Sony’s PlayStation 5 announcement yesterday, Microsoft gave us details on a new Xbox One S.

The new system will support digital content only. You read that correctly. The system does NOT have a disk drive.

The system comes with digital versions of Minecraft, Forza Horizon 3, and Sea of Thieves. The system along with the three games costs $250. Since those three games together can run more than $100, this is a heck of a deal.

What does this mean?

Does this mean that the next big Xbox console will be digital only? Well, maybe. This could all be a test to see if gamers are ready for the switch.

If this idea intrigues you, it might be time to start looking into the best games for the Xbox One.

Moving to digital only would be a big step. Brick-and-mortar stores like GameStop would suffer from the lack of games on the shelves.

Returning and refunding games would also be a bit trickier. Companies like Steam have a return policy for downloaded games.  However, selling old games for money to buy new games could very well be a thing of the past. We may no longer be able to sell a dozen $60 games for a total of eight bucks.

The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition is set to go on sale May 7.

Xbox Live is coming to Nintendo Switch

Could this solve Nintendo’s online gaming issues?

Xbox Live is coming to Nintendo Switch

Yes, you read that headline right.

Microsoft’s flagship online gaming service Xbox Live is coming to Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. The news was revealed through the name of Microsoft’s upcoming presentation “Xbox Live: Growing & Engaging Your Gaming Community Across iOS, Android, Switch, Xbox, and PC (Presented by Microsoft).” The company will roll this out at the Game Developers Conference in March.

The description for the event reads: “Xbox Live players are highly engaged and active on Xbox and PC, but now they can take their gaming achievement history, their friends list, their clubs, and more with them to almost every screen.” Microsoft clearly didn’t want people to know this yet, as the conference listing has been removed from the Game Developers Conference schedule.

Almost 20 years ago, Microsoft revolutionized online gaming with Xbox Live. The service introduced many features that are now standard, like friends lists, universal usernames, voice chat, parties, achievements, matchmaking, lobbies, and more. Basically, every online gaming service, from PlayStation Network to Steam, has been built off the foundation of Xbox Live. The obvious exception is, of course, Nintendo.

Nintendo has been infamous for their complete inability to make a decent online service. For a company that makes some of the most creative and innovative games ever, online seems to be the one concept Nintendo cannot get right. From 12-digit Friend Codes to a lack of matchmaking and voice chat, Nintendo disappointed online gamers consistently, but their incompetence was tolerable enough because their services were free. Nintendo Switch Online was Nintendo’s first attempt at a premium online service, and reception has been overwhelmingly negative due to the service’s lack of basic features like built-in voice chat.

Xbox Live coming to Switch could provide a much-needed boost to Nintendo’s online community. The ability to party up with friends and chat with them through supported games would provide Nintendo fans with the functional online service they’ve begged for. While we don’t exactly know how the service will work on the Switch, it certainly can’t hurt the console’s online reputation. Also, though it’s unclear if Xbox Live would cost money on the Switch, it should be noted that the Switch version of Minecraft uses Xbox Live for multiplayer at no additional cost.

Nintendo and Microsoft have shown that they’re willing to work with each other over the past few months, including teaming up to make a commercial that promotes crossplay between their consoles. Bringing Xbox Live to Switch is the next step in this relationship, so who knows what collaborations the two companies will make in the future?

Best original Xbox games that are compatible on Xbox One

Star Wars: Battlefront II

Gotta start with a classic.

Before EA messed up the modern Battlefront games, LucasArts dropped one of the greatest Star Wars titles known to mankind.

Why did it work so well? To name a few reasons… Galactic Conquest, playable troops from all Star Wars eras, awesome heroes, great gameplay, excellent maps (so many awesome maps!), a stunning range of vehicles and turrets available for use, and an interesting story mode featuring your friendly neighborhood stormtroopers!

This game rocks.

Blinx the Time Sweeper

Oh, Blinx! The failed masterpiece. The challenger of Master Chief.

Before Microsoft adopted Spartan 117 as their mascot, the company tried to develop a friendlier face, one that could rival Nintendo’s Mario. Their solution? Blinx, the time sweeping cat!

Despite legitimately fun gameplay, an interesting world, and an awesome soundtrack, Blinx was simply too hard to be well received. The later stages of the game, starting at Neverwinter, reach Dark Souls levels of difficulty. Not by design, but because of poor mechanics.

Still, the game certainly achieved lasting charm!

Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge

Some people want realistic flight simulators.

Others want a flight simulator version of Indiana Jones, where you constantly battle dangerous enemies in exciting dogfights! They want a wide range of planes – from fighters to bombers. Also, everything comes equipped with booster rockets because…because…reasons, by Jove!

Morrowind

Elder scrolls is old as dirt!

Seriously, the first games came from an age long past, with Elder Scrolls 6 soon to come (2020, hopefully).

Morrowind truly brought Elder Scrolls into the modern-ish age of gaming, with an epic tale to be told across a wide, open world! Prepare yourself for groundbreaking changes to the use of bows, magic, and more, that changed open-world gameplay forever!

Years later, it holds up!

Ninja Gaiden: Black

If you don’t understand the popular love of ninjas, play this game. You will understand.

Ninja Gaiden brings every ninja-lovers dreams to life with more fast-paced cut-and-slash action than a slicin’ and dicin’ Deadpool movie!

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

This game was so good, they made a decent movie! Did you hear that? They made an acceptable video game movie. That, in and of itself, is amazing!

Why did it work? Because Prince of Persia tells a classic story: a lovably brick-headed prince, far from a kingly figure, must shoulder terrible responsibility after his kingdom is devastated by the powerful Sands of Time! He then fixes the problem with his wit, fighting spirit, and parkour skills…

How to stream music and video from your phone to your gaming console

You can play music and video from your phone through your TV. Here’s how to send the content through a gaming console.

Playstation

While many gaming consoles have their own apps that allow you to control them directly from your phone, most of them don’t have an innate way to allow your phone to stream content onto them. Despite this, practically all current gen gaming devices (such as PS3, PS4, and Xbox One) are able to connect to your phone through a variety of apps. This allows you to use your gaming console as a substitute for an Apple TV or similar televisions that let you stream directly to them. Here is the easiest way to go about this:

How to stream from your phone to your gaming device

Step 1: Download iMediaShare

iMediaShare Free Download ►
7

This app is currently the best one for both Android and iPhone to use as a streaming tool for gaming consoles. It’s completely free and lets you stream basically any saved content from your phone onto your gaming device. This means you can play home videos or your saved music from your phone directly to your TV. You can also use it to stream Facebook and a few other online services (though most of these can be streamed directly through your gaming console already).

iMediaShare

Step 2: Choose the content you want to stream

Once the app is installed, you can choose whatever content you want to appear on your gaming console. First, go into the category it would be under (such as camera roll photos), and then download the content you want to share onto the app. After selecting it, you will be promoted to “Choose a screen.” Assuming your phone and gaming device are connected to the same local network, then you will be able to choose the gaming device as an option.

iMediaShare

Step 3: Open content on your gaming device

Once everything is set up on your phone, you can open the content on your gaming device by finding the segment that says “iMediaShare.” It should be under the video streaming tab that your gaming console has.

If you don’t like the layout of iMediaShare, Plex is a similar application that you may find helpful. It effectively works the same way, though you’ll have to pay for some of its more advanced features.
