Beginner’s guide to file formats

What’s better: mp3 or wav? jpg or png? Here are some common file formats and what they mean.

If you’re not a graphic designer, you may not fully understand the difference between a .jpg, and a .png file. In fact, there are many file types and file formats that aren’t fully understood by the general public. Here’s a quick and easy guide to understanding some of the most common file formats, and when to use them.

Beginner’s guide to file formats

Lossy vs. Lossless

The main difference between most file types is how they choose to compress information. “Lossy” files remove parts of a file in order to shrink it exponentially, while “Lossless” compress information without removing any.

For example, JPEGs remove unimportant information from an image in order to shrink the file size, while PNGs just compress similar parts of an image. By doing this, JPEGs can achieve much smaller file sizes since they are “Lossy” and discard parts of the actual file. On the other hand, PNGs are still fairly large files but are able to uncompress the image and recreate the original image in its entirety since they are “Lossless” and remove none of the original file.

Image files

Image Files

Besides simply being lossy or lossless files, most file types have unique ways of compressing images or data. Here are some common image file types and how they work:

JPEG: A common lossy image format that is valued for its ability to create small file sizes. It does this by removing information from an image that it deems unnecessary (an example of this would be the loss of transparency from an image file being converted to JPEG). They are best used in photographs where this information is less necessary, or when you a much smaller file size and are willing to sacrifice some of the information loss

PNG: A common lossless image format that compresses image patterns. By doing this, PNGs are able to be converted back into the original image (something that a lossy format, such as JPEG, can’t always do). PNGs are useful for a variety of graphically intensive functions, such as transparency, and color depth. However, because they still retain much of the original image, they tend to be larger files than some other common image formats.

GIF: Typically an animated lossless group of images. They have a very limited color palette of only 256 colors (compared to other file types having over a million), which makes them better suited for simple images rather than ones with complex colors. GIFs are useful for color-limited logos that require less space than a file as big as PNGs, but have sharp-edged line art that might be removed from using a JPEG. They are also useful for short animations.

Raw image files are camera files that have not been converted to another type yet. As such they are essentially the full original image with no compression.

Sound files

Sound Files

Similar to image files, sound files feature a variety of file types that are primarily based around how compressed they are. Here are some of the more common ones:

MP3: These files are lossy and typically very small. They download and load faster than other file types, and are typically found on computers and internet sound files, such as through iTunes.

WAV: These files are lossless and significantly larger than MP3 files. They are best used when premium quality sound files are necessary, such as on DVDs, radio, or Flash animations.

Like with image files, there is also a raw sound file format known as RAW Audio. This format features no compression. These typically need some level of conversion before certain audio reader programs can use them.

Document files

document files

While other file types are typically defined by their compressed information, document files are valued for other properties. Specifically, what can read them, and how easy they are to edit:

PDF: Adobe System’s document type that is primarily used to deliver fully completed documents. Unlike .docs, PDFs can be opened by anyone, since Adobe’s Acrobat is free. These documents also retain all of their original information when being converted to this format. The downside to them is that they are harder to edit than .docs. As such, they are best used to send completed documents, rather than ones that need to be edited, since they retain the full quality of the document, but are hard to edit themselves.

DOC: Microsoft Word’s document file type. These documents are easier to edit than PDFs, though they may sometimes lose information when files are converted to .doc. Also, these documents are unable to be opened and edited with much more than Microsoft Word, making the program a must for anyone primarily using this document type.

RTF: While PDFs and DOCs typically require specific program types to open them, Rich Text Format files are readable by a large variety of programs. They cannot use macros, which are embedded document tasks that you can create in other common document formats. RTFs are best used for sending documents to recipients who may not use Adobe or Microsoft Word.

Text files are the document version of “RAW Audio” or “Raw image” files. These files feature unformatted text and typically come from text-editor programs such as Microsoft Notepad.

Of course, there are more file formats than just these, but these are the ones you’re most likely to encounter in your everyday life. Other file formats aren’t as common, especially for people who aren’t working in the field of formatting those types of files (e.g. if you’re not a graphic designer, you’re unlikely to see .psd files very often).

Just Cause 4: What we know so far

Take a look at the amazing features coming to the Just Cause game series.

The Just Cause series is about to make its explosive return with Just Cause 4. Introduced at E3 2018 and putting in strong showings at both Gamescom and PAX West, Just Cause 4 is looking to be the best Just Cause game yet. Take a look at the destruction-filled gameplay footage below, and read on for more on the latest entry:

A Mysterious Story

While we’ve seen plenty of gameplay showcased so far, we’ve yet to hear much about the game’s story. So far, we know that series main character Rico Rodriguez will be returning. This time he’s headed to the fictional South American country of Solis, searching for details about his past. It’s in keeping with a recent theme of the series: the last game saw Rico liberating his home country of Medici off the southern coasts of Europe. Solis is (or was) presumably the home of one of Rico’s parents. What exactly he’s looking for there remains to be seen.

We do know that Solis is a country in turmoil. The country has been taken over by The Black Hand, a ruthless paramilitary mercenary group. They’ve previously made appearances in Just Cause 1 and 3, but this time they appear even more lethal and well-equipped than in the past, with weapons tech ranging from rail guns to heavy machine guns and more.

JC4 Jungle Combat

This time around, The Black Hand is being led by a mysterious woman known only as Gabriela. So far, we know next to nothing about this Gabriela, but we know that Rico is trying to find her for some reason. Perhaps this is the mysterious familial connection that brought Rico to Solis in the first place.

New Gameplay

Just Cause has long been known for it’s over-the-top, chaos-filled gameplay. That gameplay has been tweaked and refined for the fourth entry in the series, and that means destruction is about to get a whole lot better. NPC AI has been improved, which includes both civilians and enemies. Both groups will behave in more realistic ways. For civilians, this means a more vibrant, lifelike game world and will allow players to get a sense for the day-to-day life of Solis. For enemies, this means much more lethal opponents. Enemies will behave strategically, coordinating as squads and posing a much bigger threat to Rico.

JC4 Wingsuit

Other changes include tweaks to the game’s wingsuit and grappling mechanics. The signature wingsuit and parachute will be returning, but wind currents have been added to the game’s ambient world. Using these wind currents can boost your flying speed, and going against them can have the opposite effect. These wind currents are also totally randomly generated as part of the game’s robust new ambient weather system, which you can read more about later in the article.

Grappling mechanics have also been overhauled with the ability to attach mini balloons to objects. Similar to tethering and the rocket boosters of previous games, these balloons can be upgraded, allowing pretty much anything to take flight. No helicopter? No worries. Simply find a nearby car, attach a few balloons and rocket boosters to it, and you’ve got an instant aircraft. You can also do the same to enemies. Don’t want to deal with a whole squad of Black Hand? Grapple some balloons to them and send them skyward.

Wild Weather

The most significant feature being added to the game is the incredible new weather system. Solis is a diverse country encompassing everything from snowcapped mountains to arid deserts and lush tropical jungles. The game’s weather is ambiently generated to reflect that, and weather effects are totally random.

Avalanche has also added some more extreme weather effects to the game. So far, they’ve confirmed blizzards, sandstorms, and tornadoes, which can be seen in the gameplay trailer above. These effects are nothing short of awe-inspiring. Since the game world is almost totally destructible, a tornado’s path of destruction can totally change the map, ripping up buildings, destroying bridges, and wiping out enemy bases.

JC4 Tornado

These huge new effects are enhanced by new physics-based rendering, making the destruction all the more real. The fact that the weather events are randomly generated also opens up new gameplay possibilities: you can be in the middle of a chaotic firefight with a squad of enemies and suddenly have to worry about getting out of the path of an oncoming tornado.

So far, Just Cause 4 looks poised to improve on everything that has made the series so great. The game is slated for release on December 4, 2018.

Meet Apple’s new iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR

Apple just announced its new phones. Are they worth the cash?

Today Apple came down with announcements for their brand new iPhones: The XS, XS Max, and XR, the first two of which will be hitting the market for pre-order starting on September 14, and shipping a week later. To start off, one of the biggest universal changes from previous models is that none of the new three iPhones will feature the home button in front, instead favoring Face ID.

price ranges

Both the XS and the XS Max will have a Super Retina OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display, the new most durable protection against dust and liquids = up to a rating of ip68 (even protects against beer!), and the new powerhouse processing A12 Bionic chip. The display for the XS is already large at 5.8 inches with 2.7 million pixels, but the XS Max takes the cake at 6.5″ with a staggering 3 million. Both models have a larger display than the iPhone 8 Plus.

bigger screens

We all know a big measuring stick for Apple is how powerful their cameras are, and how high-quality their picture resolution can be, along with any features that can be later tweaked through filters and adjustable options. Both the XS and XS Max have a 7MP front-facing camera with a 12MP dual main camera that takes the highest-quality pictures a mobile device has ever achieved, most notably the new depth segmentation map with which you can take truly breathtaking photos in portrait mode. The new Smart HDR sensor reduces blur on action shots and senses and enhances lighting based on subject and facial mapping.

beautiful HD portraits

Get ready for a slew of new super HD selfies.

New powerful camera

The XS  has a state of the art 6-element lens along with the new ground-breaking 12MP telephoto camera, which together give both a crystal clear picture as well as an adjustable depth of field, which can even be shifted in post.

One key feature that Apple users have been craving has also at last been addressed: Dual-sim functionality. With this, you can keep two phone numbers and use two different plans. With the new iPhone you can set up a primary and a secondary number so that you’ll finally know which is being contacted without question. This is especially handy if you want one number for business and another different one for your personal life.

If you haven’t seen the presentation yet, check it out right here:

As for battery life, we were pleasantly surprised to hear that the new phones actually improve battery life rather than draining it faster due to more powerful processing speed and more refined features. The XS has an extra 30 minutes of battery life and the XS Max goes up to an extra hour to an hour and a half, meaning you can go just that much longer before needing to charge.

less frequent charging is always welcome

Of all the new models, though, we were most excited about the new XR, which is basically a less expensive and smaller version of the iPhone 8 Plus. The XR boasts the same A12 Bionic chip, and incredible 12MP wide-angle camera that the XS and XS Max have, and can last up to 90 minutes longer than its iPhone 8 Plus predecessor. It also has a larger display, at 6.1″ with the new beautiful Liquid Retina LCD – 1.4 million pixels with 326 ppi. (That’s a bigger display than the iPhone 8 Plus, too).

XR skins

While the XR comes in a variety of colors (see above picture), the XS and XS Max come in three colors (gold, silver, and space gray) and three different storage sizes: 64, 256, or a huge 512 GB. Both are available for pre-order starting on 9/14, with the XS costing $999 and the XS Max costing $1,099.

The XR starts with 64 GB as well, and will hit the market a month later, starting with pre-order on 10/19, shipping 10/26. The XR, though, will only cost $749, being the most affordable option so far.

Apple made it very clear in their presentation that they are hoping to reach a larger audience with their products, both with their new phones and with the upcoming Apple Watch.

Will you be getting the new iPhone? If so, which model grabbed your interest? Let us know in the comments below!

Guide to finding jobs with LinkedIn

Ready to find a job with LinkedIn? Here’s how to get started.

LinkedIn provides one of the most well-rounded sites for creating a business profile and applying to jobs. Of course… when any website can be called “well-rounded,” you should expect a powerful but complex user interface. There are a lot of tools, and it’s hard to get a handle on them all.

But no worries: we’re here to help!

To do so, we divided LinkedIn into three main sections: profile, network, and application.

See? Things are simpler already.

Profile

Once you create an account with LinkedIn, find the button for your profile page at the far right of the menu bar. Click “Me” and then hit your name in the pop-up menu. This will take you to your profile window.

The body of your profile starts with a banner, picture, short user-created description, and a summary of your job history. Alter the banner and basic information (not job history) by hitting the pencil tool to the right. To adjust your Profile Picture, click on it directly.

Header

Immediately below your header, there are a few tools: a profile strength meter, and page stats. Disregard these and head farther down, where you’ll run into the important sections: experience, skills, education, and more! These are all structured the same way. They are meant to show the history you will bring to your new workplace:

ExperienceWriter at Softonic

Add different elements to a section by clicking the “+” button and filling out the form: LinkedIn asks for information like your start/end dates, and job description. If you wish to alter these details later, head back into your profile and hit the pencil and menu tools located right of the proper tab.

Now, do this for each folder. It takes time, but you’ll arrive at a profile that makes you proud!

ONE MORE THING

Head to the top right side of your profile page to find the “Edit public profile & URL” button:

Buttons

By using the edit public profile, you have greater control over who sees your website, and how much of it they can view:

Also, more importantly, LinkedIn allows you to edit all content using another option on the right side of this screen:

Thingy

This option not only allows you to alter entire folders within your profile, you can add new ones. If you’re an author or researcher, you can develop a section to house your publications. If you’re missing the education folder, it can be re-created here.

Network

Networking on LinkedIn performs similarly to connecting on social media sites, so your experience with FaceBook and MySpace may actually come in handy! Find the icon at the top bar:

Network

We can’t show other user’s profiles so here’s our best description:

On the left, you’ll find a box showing your current connections. At the top middle, a small menu holds incoming connection requests.

Finally, in the center, LinkedIn provides a gallery of people you may know, each with a link to their profile, miniature description, and quick-connect button. When you first begin, connect with friends you know in real life to get the ball rolling – there are never too many connections on LinkedIn. Once you’re finished, the system will recommend other users to extend your web of connections.

Since you’ve already created a satisfactory profile, don’t forget to direct others to your site when you meet in a professional environment! If you’re at a restaurant or career gathering and meet someone, your LinkedIn account can help you reconnect with them. Be prepared and your network will grow accordingly!

Application

Applying to jobs makes things happen! You’ve already updated your profile and established your current connections – now it’s time to put the rubber to the road and search for that perfect job.

Jobs

You can hit the icon seen above, or use the search bar. Both will take you to the “Jobs” window:

Start with the basics: where are you looking for a job, and are there any helpful keywords? Once you have answers to those questions, LinkedIn whips together every applicable position. Here’s a demonstration search for “Writer” in the greater Los Angeles area:

Writer Search
Once you begin searching, it’s possible to order the jobs by date, features, company, and experience level required.

At the bottom left, the scroll menu shows a list of job offers. Selecting any one of them pulls up the detailed info in the right window. Look through, read each, and figure out if anything fits you!

There are two options from here: Save or Easy Apply.

“Save” places the job in a file where you can come back to it later. Just make sure to return before the application due date!

Easy Apply initiates LinkedIn’s application process. Your profile will tell the interviewer much about you, so there will only be a few questions left, which vary from position to position. For example: you may be asked for contact information, a resume, work authorization, cover letters, etc. Once you complete the information and send it off, you’re done!

To check the status, head back to the main “Jobs” window, and see what’s new with those outstanding applications.

Make sure to keep an eye out for email updates as well! In the meantime, keep improving your profile and applying for jobs.

Going Forward

We’ve only scratched the surface of LinkedIn’s potential, and are still far from the true depth of its massive capabilities. This guide intends only to provide clarity on the basics: profile creation, networking, and job application. Why? Because all else aside, having a firm grasp of those tools can help you find a job!

Good luck with the hunt. Stick with it and you’ll find your way!

How to play Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is an addictive, incredible game. Here’s how to get started.

Hollow Knight is a beautifully created two-dimensional game. As the Hollow Knight, you are dropped into a grim world armed only with your nail. There are countless levels to explore as you progress through the game. You’ll also find that a lot of deaths will mark your path. Some will be your slain enemies, and other times it will be your death, especially early on in the game.

The game is available across all popular platforms such as Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Windows, and Mac computers.

In this guide on how to play Hollow Knight, we will cover the basics of the game and provide you with some helpful tips to get your journey started.

How to Play Hollow Knight

You will be dropped into the world with not much information on getting started. You can go either left or right from your starting point. It is important to remember that the game features a labyrinthian world filled with many different nooks and crannies, so it is easy to get lost. Here is how to get started with Hollow Knight.

How to play HOLLOW KNIGHT

Focus on Melee Combat Early On

At the beginning of the game, you won’t have a lot of magic. As such, you must focus on melee combat and save your magic for when you need to heal. Slashing with your nail is an excellent way to keep enemies from reaching you. However, in some cases, you’ll have to get creative when an enemy blocks. In these cases, you might try attacking from the air or getting around the enemy.

Your magic will get stronger, and later in the game, you’ll learn many spells you can use as. However, whenever your soul (which is required to use magic) starts running low, you’ll want to fall back on melee attacks.

Find and Upgrade Maps as Early as Possible

In Hollow Knight, maps are precious tools. Because it is so easy to get lost, a map can help guide you. Whenever you enter a new area, make sure to find the map vendor as soon as possible and buy the map for the area.

How to play HOLLOW KNIGHT

Maps are usually relatively cheap, with the first one being only 30 geo. Geo is the currency within this world. To make the maps even more valuable, you can buy pins to show you where other valuable locations are. The most significant upgrades for your map are:

  • The compass (220 geo) as well as the quill (120 geo).
  • Bench pin (100 geo).
  • The vendor pin (100 geo).
How to play HOLLOW KNIGHT

Customize the Hollow Knight to Fit Your Gaming Style

In the beginning, the charms you get seem very basic. However, as the game progresses and you start earning more charms and notches, you can start to customize the Hollow Knight to your preferred gaming style. You only have a limited amount of notches, so make sure that you choose your charms carefully. Many charms work well together, and some build on each other, so it’s a good idea to try them all and see how they work.

Be Prepared to Backtrack

The game is primarily about exploration, especially in the beginning. This means that you will spend a fair amount of time moving back and forth between locations. The more bugs you collect on your travels, the more vendors will appear in town. Make sure to visit them frequently to buy any new upgrades. Eventually, you will have the option to unlock the stag stations, which will enable you to fast travel between locations.

How to play HOLLOW KNIGHT

Use Benches Whenever You Find Them

Finding a bench should be your first priority whenever you enter a new location. The benches act as a checkpoint, and you can rest on them to regain health. With this checkpoint activated, if you were to get killed at any point, you will respawn at the last bench you rested on.

How to play HOLLOW KNIGHT

Sitting on a bench also lets you equip any charms you’ve earned or purchased. Also, if you have already purchased the quill, you can use it while sitting on a bench to fill in your maps with details of your exploration.

The areas usually contain a few benches, so it is worthwhile to explore around a bench until you find the next one and repeat the process to explore deeper into any new area.

Return to Where You Were Killed

There will be times in the game where you will die. This is inevitable as Hollow Knight is not an easy game. However, if you die, you can just return to the place where you died and claim back any items of geo’s you had on you. However, to get them back, you will have to fight and beat your shadow first.

How to play HOLLOW KNIGHT

Tips and Tricks for Playing Hollow Knight

Now that we’ve explained how the game works, we’ll be sharing a few tips and tricks you can use while playing Hollow Knight.

Persevere Through the Early Stages

In the early stages of the game, it may feel like it drags on a bit. Unfortunately, the opening area, Forgotten Crossroads, is probably also one of the duller areas in the game. Since there is so much gameplay to learn, it can feel like it just drags on. However, once the game starts opening up, you’ll find it enthralling and entertaining.

Talk to Everyone

Don’t forget to talk to everyone. The backstory of Hallownest is actually quite interesting, and every character you talk to shares more about the world.

During Combat Stay in the Air

The Hollow Knight can attack in all four directions. Although a regular forward/backward attack is sufficient for most enemies, you’ll soon find that jumping over an enemy and attacking down is usually more effective.

It’s a good idea to start practicing attacking from above early on in the game. Simply jump over an obstacle or enemy and repeatedly attack downward in a pogoing effect to remain safe while dealing damage.

Buy Custom Map Pins

The Hollow Knight maps are very sprawling, with many locked areas and secrets. Map pins are extremely valuable and well worth the geo required to buy them. Buying custom map pins will let you mark locked areas for future reference. This is valuable because as you travel through all the different maps, it will become increasingly difficult to remember where certain locked areas are once you have the upgrade needed to unlock the area.

Play With Headphones or Volume Turned Up

Not only is the audio of this game fantastic, but audio cues play a big part in the game. For example, you can hear Hollow Knight grubs cry out for help, and you can hear enemies moving ahead. Even some of the bosses’ attack cues have an audio trigger. Playing Hollow Knight with the audio enriches the gameplay and provides the player with useful cues.

Rescue the Grubs

Right from the start, you will see grubs spread out all over the world. These Hollow Knight grubs are trapped in glass jars and calling out for help. By finding and saving them, you can earn rewards. The rewards vary from geo to charms and other useful items. It is definitely worthwhile to find as many of these grubs as you can. Some of them will be hidden in plain sight, whereas others will be hidden behind platforming challenges.

Don’t Underestimate Charms

The charms may seem a little useless in the beginning; however, as you progress through the game, you will start unlocking more charms. The charm system of Hollow Knight is much deeper than you first expect. There are charms that will give you potent advantages, whereas others might drastically change your gameplay. If we can recommend any charm, it would be Quick Focus. This charm lets you recharge health much faster, which is useful in those difficult boss battles.

How to play HOLLOW KNIGHT

Set off on a fun adventure

Hollow Knight is an exciting two-dimensional exploration game that is set in a beautifully created world. The game is a welcomed challenge that combines platforming challenges with boss fights. All of this combined with beautiful storytelling and music score. Don’t miss out on this gem.

Is Spotify Premium worth it?

Is Spotify Premium worth the money? Here’s how to decide.

Most people know Spotify Premium for its lack of ads. This is one of its biggest selling points, as Spotify believes that’s the main reason why people would want to switch to the Premium version. And while for some that is enough of a reason, others might still be on the fence. Here are a few questions you should be asking yourself before you decide to take the leap and go all in on Spotify Premium.

1. How often do you use Spotify?

The very first question you should be asking yourself is whether you use Spotify enough to justify the cost. If you’re using Spotify every day, then obviously you’ll be able to notice a difference between using Premium and having the free version. However, if you’re using Spotify less often, you may not even see ads all that frequently.

2. Do you typically use it on a desktop or as a mobile app?

This is probably one of the largest factors to consider before upgrading. While the app version does not allow you to play specific songs without paying for Spotify (instead featuring a shuffle system similar to Pandora), the Windows version does. This is a feature that is a main selling point for the app version, but is less useful if you mostly listen to Spotify on a desktop.

3. Do you use Hulu?

If you’re already paying for Hulu, then getting Spotify Premium is actually pretty cheap. They have a deal where you can get both Premium and Hulu’s Limited Commercials for $12.99. This is only a few dollars more for each of the services. If you use both Spotify and Hulu, then there this deal is well worth the money. Additionally, there is an extremely discounted rate for students.

4. Do you plan to use its offline features?

Another big selling point for Spotify Premium is the ability to download songs and listen to them offline. Maybe part of the reason you don’t use Spotify frequently right now is because you don’t have consistent internet access where you would be using it. If that’s the case, then Spotify Premium would be something to look into, since you can download songs on multiple devices with it, so it doesn’t require internet access.

Overall, paying for Spotify can be great for convenience, but only if you are using the app version on a regular basis. You want to make sure your money is being well spent on a product that you’re using. It’s up to you to decide whether you feel you put in enough time for it to make a difference. Thankfully, Spotify offers a free trial for the first month of its service, so you can take advantage of that to find out whether you feel it’s a good fit for you or not.

7 ongoing animes you should be watching

If you’re excited about finding fresh anime series, look no further. We’ve got a few awesome suggestions right here.

If you like anime, there are classics you should try watching: “Cowboy Bebop,” “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood,” “Black Butler,” “Gurren Lagann,” and more. But we’re not here to talk about the time-honored classics, or reminisce about old times (unless those times are still going) and walk down the winding road of nostalgia road. No…

We’re here to talk about what’s new!

Don’t get us twisted; the classics are great, and knowing them goes a long way to connecting with other folks at the next comic convention. However, there’s something fantastic about the experience of joining an anime fan community that’s vibrant, growing, and ongoing! If you’re excited about finding those fresh experiences, look no further. We’ve got a few awesome suggestions right here.

7 ongoing animes you should be watching

Made in Abyss

Made in Abyss

There’s almost no community newer than “Made in Abyss.” With only one season currently available on Amazon Prime, there’s plenty of time to join!

From the mind of writer Akihito Tsukushi, “Made in Abyss” follows the epic journey of Riko and her cyborg companion Reg into a gaping crevasse called the Abyss, a powerful, supernatural canyon that defies human expansion and exploration, killing many who journey into its depths.

Riko’s journey to find her mother, the great explorer Liza the Annihilator, fills the story with touching emotional depths, which is complemented by her close companionship with Reg and the other characters they encounter. Also, the magnificent design and concept of the abyss, combined with grand music composed by Kevin Penkin, makes the story vast, beautiful, and mysterious.

There’s too much mystery to say much more, except… Made in Abyss won Crunchyroll’s coveted “Anime of the Year” award, beating out even “My Hero Academia.” It’s close, but we agree wholeheartedly with Crunchyroll. MiA is just that good!

Oh, and don’t be fooled by the almost-childish art style. This show gets REAL.

One Punch Man

One Punch Man

ONE PUNCH!!!

“One Punch Man (OPM),” originally created by Yusuku Murata, has only one season out. We recommend watching it on Netflix or Hulu with a subscription

How to describe this show? OPM is just one of those shows: even if you haven’t watched it, you’ve probably heard of the anime and are tired of friends constantly regaling this show. And with good reason!

The story follows Saitama, a hero so powerful he destroys all enemies with a single punch, fighting enemies with his “disciple” Genos, a cyborg searching for his parents’ killer thanks to the help of the mechanical genius, Doctor Kuseno.

On a simple level, “One Punch Man” is just a trope inversion that makes fun of other action animes like “Dragon Ball Z,” with their hilarious overemphasis on convoluted backstories, dramatically overdone fight scenes, and laughable portrayals of buff, badass dudes and sleek, sensuous gals. Plan for epic hilarity as the main characters bash through some of the most memorable monsters in anime history, all the while featuring the perfect mix of Genos’s tryhard attitude and Saitama’s utter doofiness!

On a deeper level, “One Punch Man” is meant to examine Saitama’s journey to relate with other humans after his discovery of ungodly powers leaves him possibly lacking something “essential to being human.” Of course, that’s for Meaning Miners: if you’re looking for powerful, moving statements on human nature, this show has a surprising amount to offer.

Also, they have the best startup video. Seriously, the best. [Gore warning]

Haikyuu!!

Haikyuu

Volleyball, heck yeah!

With three seasons out on Crunchyroll and more to come, Haikyuu arguably dominates the sports anime market. From the mind of Haruichi Furudate, this anime blends heart and humor perfectly, in a way that was perfectly joked about by YouTuber ProZD‘s video “before and after watching a sports anime”.

“Haikyuu” tells the tale of Karasuno High School’s volleyball team as they struggle to regain powerhouse status after falling from grace years before. We follow Shoyo Hinata, a friendly guy who loves who loves the game but lacks height. Planning to crush the odds in typical anime fashion, he joins the volleyball club at Karasuno, walking in the footsteps of an unusually short ace called the Little Giant. Shoyo, along with his nemesis/friend Tobio and a few other first-years, revitalize Karasuno’s team and together, the players buckle down and saddle up for a journey that will make you want to get on a volleyball court yourself!

If you enjoy getting to know characters, trust us: you’ll know and love every team, Karasuno and their opponents included! Everyone from Nekoma to Dateko to Aoba Johsai leaves a memorable mark on the story. “Haikyuu’s” well-rounded plot lacks nothing!

My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia

Another show your friends probably won’t shut up about!

“My Hero Academia,” from Kohei Horikoshi, can be found on Crunchyroll. Whereas “One Punch Man” makes fun of action tropes in anime, this show glorifies them and creates a modern, entertaining hero tale:

Imagine a world where X-Men pop up everywhere, and heroism has achieved career status. Pretty cool, right? Now, within that world, place a young boy named Izuku, who grew up idolizing heroes like the famous All Might, but realizes… he has no latent powers (called Quirks) whatsoever.

Until he runs into All-Might himself, and receives the most powerful Quirk known to mankind.

Then, while a dark organization plans to nip Izuku’s newfound ability in the bud and destroy all heroes, our main character does what any good anime kid should do when his life is threatened by powerful forces: he goes to school. Specifically U.A. High, a school for heroes such as himself (if that isn’t the most anime thing ever, I don’t know what is). There, he and his fellow students will battle for their lives and their futures as career heroes!

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan

Let’s be honest. “Attack on Titan” is halfway to being a classic already.

For the newbies: this anime, created by Hajime Isayama, follows Eren Yeager as he attacks titans.

What?! You still need to know more? Fine:

Huge, fleshy monsters that devour humans for seemingly no reason. A gigantic nation composed of concentric, ringed walls that defend the last of humanity from the unknown world outside. New “deviant” titans finally breaching the enormous barriers which have protected humanity for so long. The destruction and loss of entire cities. Thousands fleeing to the inner circles for protection. Final, desperate battles to stem the tide of extinction. Ancient organizations and buried history turning survivors on each other, even as the world falls apart. A core group of characters standing arm in arm against armageddon.

There’s a lot to like.

Sword Art Online

Sword Art Online

No joke: there’s a season three announced!

Thanks to the hard work of Reki Kawahara, “Sword Art Online” represents the next best show birthed from the popular trope “people get stuck in video games.” Except this time, the adventure continues long after escaping the first game, and the theme of technological advancement continues to inspire new and fascinating worlds!

So join us as we follow Kirito, a hero who becomes trapped in the famous new MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online game) known as Sword Art Online, where dying in-game or attempting to escape means certain death in real life!

Like many anime heroes, Kirito’s not particularly charismatic or positive or kind or vivacious… but somehow we love him anyways! Because beneath the cold exterior, he possesses a heart of gold that reveals itself in his desire to help as many people survive the game as possible, even if that means trusting only himself to finish the job.

Don’t listen to the haters; Kirito’s alright.

Even since the Sword Art Online, Alfheim, and Gun Gale incidents have finished, we’re still looking forward to where this long and winding road goes next. And thanks to its popularity, you can find SAO pretty much anywhere: Netflix, Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Crackle!

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

“Saiki K.,” from Shūichi Asō, is the most wonderfully eclectic clip show you could ask for, and can be watched easily with a Netflix subscription.

Picture a smarter, adult, anime version of Spongebob Squarepants, with extremely fast and funny episodes centered around a psychic student who just wants to blend in with the crowd and live a quiet life… which is constantly threatened by literally everything: sweet but silly parents, well-intentioned friends, bothersome animals, and the engrossing nature of Saiki’s own powers. It doesn’t currently have too much of an overarching storyline, but every episode engages you and leaves you wanting more.

We burned through the entire second season a day after it came out.

A Final Reiteration

That being said, remember to enjoy the benefits of newly released animes! If you don’t have fun with the wild speculation, community growth, and joyful anticipation of watching a show as it comes out season-by-season, aren’t you just making yourself wait? Take a leap and enjoy yourself! And of course: if we couldn’t mention an ongoing show you love, please let everyone know in the comments. We’ll give it a try!

One overarching rule to remember when it comes to Fortnite’s weapons: all guns in the game are available in varying levels of rarity, ranked based on a color system. Refer to the list below to see each level, and make sure you go for rare guns whenever you find them.

Common- Grey

Uncommon- Green

Rare- Blue

Epic- Purple

Legendary- Orange

Submachine Gun

Fortnite Submachine Gun

Rarities: Common/Uncommon/Rare

Damage Per Shot: 17/18/19

Ammo Type: Light Bullets

Magazine Capacity: 30

Description: The Submachine Gun bridges the gap between pistols and assault rifles. Firing pistol rounds from a standard 30-round magazine, the SMG’s damage per shot is comparatively low. Unlike other automatic weapons, it makes up for this low damage with a fast fire rate and high close-range accuracy that will quickly chew through enemy shields and put a decisive end to close encounters. The SMG’s effectiveness drops off at range, becoming less accurate at distances. The SMG isn’t going to be much help against far away opponents, and should instead be reserved for shorter ranges.

Suppressed Submachine Gun

Fortnite Suppressed Submachine Gun

Rarities: Common/Uncommon/Rare

Damage Per Shot: 22/23/24

Ammo Type: Light Bullets

Magazine Capacity: 30

Description: The Suppressed SMG is a silenced version of the standard SMG. The gun’s suppressor is mostly cosmetic; it will give you something of an advantage if you take an enemy by surprise, but don’t expect it to make you into the next Solid Snake. Enemies will quickly figure out where the attack is coming from, meaning you won’t be able to stay hidden for long.

Though stealth capabilities are limited, the Suppressed SMG does higher damage than its standard issue counterpart. This high damage is tempered by a slower fire rate, making it less effective for quick close up engagements. This slow fire rate does make the Suppressed SMG slightly more controllable, however, meaning it’s a fair bit more accurate at longer ranges.

Drum Gun

Fortnite Drum Gun

Rarities: Uncommon/Rare

Damage Per Shot: 26/27

Ammo Type: Medium Bullets

Magazine Capacity: 50

Description: The Tommy Gun. The Chicago Typewriter. The Drum Gun. All are nicknames for the iconic Thompson Submachine Gun, a favorite of Prohibition-era gangsters across America. The Drum Gun’s name comes from the weapon’s circular drum magazine, which isn’t just for show. It has a whopping 50-round capacity, the highest of any of the submachine guns. Coupled with the weapon’s use of high damage Medium Bullets, it quickly becomes apparent why the gun was so popular with the criminally inclined. Simply point, hold down the trigger, and blaze away until the high-caliber bullets do their job. Just make sure you do your best to fight the urge to become the next Al Capone.

Compact SMG

Fortnite Compact SMG

Rarities: Epic/Legendary

Damage Per Shot: 20/21

Ammo Type: Light Bullets

Magazine Capacity: 40

Description: The Compact SMG is the thinking man’s submachine gun. High damage? Check. High magazine capacity? Check. Accuracy? Check. The Compact SMG does it all, and does it with style. Its fast fire rate couples nicely with its other attributes to create a perfect all around weapon for close to medium range firefights, and will make short work of any enemies in your way. They’re a rare find, though, so count yourself lucky if you happen to stumble across one. Oh, and make sure to grab it if you do: this is one addition to your arsenal that you can’t afford to pass up.

Submachine Guns are the perfect backup weapons to have on hand, and will get you out of more than one sticky situation. They nicely round out any player’s arsenal, bridging the gap between slower firing long-range weapons and the close-range applications of shotguns. If you find yourself more suited to a spray-and-pray approach, SMGs will quickly become your new best friends.
