Microsoft has announced the definitive withdrawal of Skype, its iconic messaging application, which will take place on May 5th. What times when Messenger said goodbye because of Skype.

This milestone marks the end of an era for the platform, which, although it was a pioneer in video calls and messaging, has seen its popularity fade in the face of strong competition from other communication apps.

The transition will be directed towards Microsoft Teams Free, the alternative that the company hopes Skype users will adopt.

The legacy of Skype comes to an end: users face the transition to Microsoft Teams Free

Microsoft will make this migration process easier by automatically transferring contacts and chats from the old application to the new one. However, it is important to note that some familiar features of Skype will not be available in Teams, which could lead to dissatisfaction among the most loyal users.

Although the messaging app will be discontinued, Microsoft has established a grace period until January 2026 during which Skype data will remain accessible.

Users will have the opportunity to export or delete their information before the final closure. Additionally, if users register for Microsoft Teams Free before that date, they will be able to access their call and chat history from Skype.

On the other hand, Skype for Business will continue to operate, although its future remains uncertain. This decision suggests that Microsoft still sees a niche for business communication, separate from its more generalized offerings.

As May 5 approaches, the Skype user community faces the challenging task of adapting to a new communication ecosystem. While Microsoft promises a seamless experience with Teams, the legacy of Skype and its features that made it popular are about to become a memory of a different digital era.

Skype is preparing a feature to transcribe voice notes

Skype, the well-known communication application that is part of Microsoft, has shown in its Preview version a new feature within the program that will allow users to enjoy a tool that transcribes voice notes to discover their content without having to listen to them. It has not yet reached the official version, but if the feature performs as expected, it would not take long to land in the final version of the service.

It is common to see a voice note among your pending messages, and not know when you will be able to listen to it, since, often, voice notes require a suitable environment and a favorable moment to be able to give it the attention it deserves. But with this feature, many users will have ample facilities to communicate easily.

Sype Preview, as shown by Neowin, has released in a new build the mentioned transcription feature, which allows users to enjoy the content of a voice note without listening to it, as this function converts the message content into text.

This is a very interesting feature because of the flexibility it offers to users. Many times, in an inappropriate context and place, listening to a voice note can be impossible, while reading a transcribed text can be much easier. Therefore, this improvement will be a relief in the quality of life for those people who frequently use Skype and often receive voice notes that they cannot listen to at the moment, but that they could respond to if they are written as text.

A function with many followers

This is not an exclusive novelty from Skype, as there are several current services that allow the installation of transcription systems so that voice notes can be converted to text. This is the case of services like Telegram or Discord, which allow the installation of various bots in groups that are capable of performing all kinds of functions, one of them being voice note transcription.

Skype is currently one of Microsoft’s major communication applications, although over time they have tried to give it a more informal approach to maximize professionalism in their other platform, Microsoft Teams, which is more focused on professional environments.

Skype also joins artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence is here to stay. Although some media try to resist and some companies are taking more discreet steps than others, it seems a reality that this new technology is here to stay. This is demonstrated by Google’s advances in the ethical use of AI, but also by the changes that Microsoft intends to introduce in its Paint application or Companion, Zoom’s new weapon to fight Microsoft Copilot, are clear indicators that the world is turning in a very specific direction. Tech giants are increasingly betting on strengthening their applications through AI-enhanced features or even adding some new tools that were unthinkable before it.

Long-awaited additions

Although Skype has not been one of the first applications to enjoy it, Microsoft has been flirting with this technology for a long time. Above I mentioned Copilot and the functions that will soon come to MS Paint, but its star bet has undoubtedly been Bing AI, an artificial intelligence as powerful as Bard, which will be used to strengthen and improve the functions of the calling and chat application. It has not yet reached the final version of Skype, but the new features can already be tested thanks to Skype Insider, the test version of the program that anyone can access with a couple of clicks.

The new features that Bing AI has brought to Skype are quite interesting, such as a rewriting function that offers you more formal or academic alternatives, among others, as you type. It almost seems like a feature that would be appreciated in Microsoft Word for creative writing, but the cool addition of marking tone to an already written sentence and having the application modify it accordingly is also a very cool feature. It also includes several overlay actions and a sleep state to only activate once you start typing, and never before.

Skype contractors have been listening to some of your calls

Contractors working for Microsoft are allowed to listen to some Skype calls that use Skype’s translation feature

Privacy! What ever happened to that age old tradition of being able to reasonably expect all of your personal affairs to stay private? Ever since that first birthday reminder Facebook sent you, you’ve been fighting a losing battle to keep yourself to yourself. As well as social media, website cookies, app permissions, and small print that would literally take weeks to read, we’ve recently found out that human beings working at companies like Google, Amazon, and Apple have been listening to recordings we previously thought were only being analyzed by machines.

Yep, three out of the big four tech companies have been lying to us about who listens to the voice recordings we share with them. As is always the case, however, with privacy invasion stories in the modern ad-tech era, it gets worse. Humans at Microsoft, the fourth of the big four tech companies have also been playing our private conversations.

Contractors working for Microsoft are allowed to listen to some Skype calls that use Skype’s translation feature

A report by Motherboard claims that contractors working on Skype’s translation service have had access to personal conversations taking place across the app. Citing a “cache of internal documents, screenshots, and audio recordings,” the report says that the contractors had access to intimate conversations between lovers, fraught conversations discussing relationship issues and problems, and recordings of people talking about sensitive and personal issues like weight loss.

Voice commands given to Microsoft’s virtual assistant, Cortana were also accessible to the contractors according to the report, though these won’t have included such intimate information like that being shared in Skype conversations.

Skype speaking different languages

It has to be said that Skype’s translation service, which the Microsoft-owned company launched in 2015 is impressive. It offers almost real-time translation on voice and video calls, as well as text conversations, between a number of different languages. The service is supposed to be run using AI and machine learning algorithms, but according to Motherboard’s insider much of the leg work is also being done by human contractors. These human contractors carry out the same job as the AI to help the machine learn how to do the job better itself.

This is how a lot of AI systems work. Humans teach algorithms to do a job until the algorithm can do it well enough itself and then even go on to teach itself how to improve efficiency. Not all AI training needs access to sensitive private information, however, like with the Skype translation service.

Whereas it could be expected that a translation algorithm would need human training, Microsoft hasn’t been very clear in making it clear to Skype users. Skype’s website does mention that audio clips taken from Skype calls will be analyzed but doesn’t say that some of the analysis will be done by humans. This is likely because, people would be a lot less likely to use a communications service, if they believed people were listening in.

The only good news to come out of this is that the contractors don’t have access to identifiable information about the user’s involved in the conversations they’re analyzing. In the grand scheme of things, however, that is a very small mercy. They might not know who you are, but they are still able to listen in on your most intimate conversations were you’re detailing some of your most private insecurities. Pretty creepy stuff.

Skype screen sharing now available for iOS, Android

Screen sharing for Skype is here!

Skype

Skype has officially released screen sharing for mobile devices.

Skype offered screen sharing for beta testers for a while, but now it is available for all users across iOS and Android.

Screen sharing is very useful for video calling. For example, let’s say you are on a Skype call with your boss, and they need to show you a chart or graph, but they aren’t near a computer. They can share their screen with you so you can see it for yourself, while you continue your work discussion with them.

Or, let’s say you are on the phone with your significant other, and they need to talk you through a recipe. They can share their screen with you to show you the recipe, while they help explain it to you over the phone. Better yet, it can help you explain to your non-tech savvy parents how to work their smartphone.

Regardless of how you use it, we are glad screen sharing is here.

Skype has another new feature in beta for mobile users: the ability to hide call controls. Tap your phone once to hide call controls, and double tap the screen to hide everything except the call itself.
